Adani & Wolf.......2007-01-21
A refreshing CD from the norms of smooth jazz, electronica, soft pop and rock. Adani & Wolf do a nice job, a really great CD to sit and listen to. This CD has something thats erotic, a little slow, a little fast and something inbetween. If you like smooth jazz or soft pop this one is for your must list. The quality of the CD is very nice. Rich sounding and articulate, and you might even want to dance a little. If Your A Fan Of Praful, Then You Might Want To Give This CD A Listen To!
Top.......2006-10-07
This is one of my all-time favorite albums... already! I'm not kidding. People who feel violent or want to go to war should listen to this album. It makes me feel connected to everyone and calm and hopeful for the future. This album is pure love. Bliss never sounded so good.
Fresh and New.......2006-05-23
I don't know if this is called Chill or what, but it is fresh and new music with a jazzy electronic twist. Excellent!
STUNNING DEBUT!!!.......2005-11-04
Producers Adani and Wolf have created some exceptionallly delicious chill-out music that have more than just the monotonous basslines and tripped out vocals...these guys have blended jazz with elements of funk, r&b and world grooves to create a tapestry of music not done successfully by most artist of the "chill out" genre. More than likely these two will go unnoticed by the masses, but they are deserving to be in the echelon with other well-known duos like Kruder and Dorfmeister, Fila Brazillia and The Verbrilli Sound. Highly Recommended!!!!
Great.......2005-08-28
Wow... What a great album. It starts out with a phone call reminiscing the title theme song. Then comes the jazzy/elctronica hit "Daylight". The whole album is very "chillish", absolutely perfect driving music. The album is very electronica sounding, but with a definite jazz appeal to it. Also it has some almost r&b sounding stuff, it's just all great. Very relaxing and mesmirizing CD. Definitely recommened.

A verismo treasure.......2007-01-05
This was an absolute 'Find' of an opera and can be strongly recommended to all lovers of verismo and romantic opera. Although considerably cut in the first and third acts, the piece's value still shines through and in many places is more sophisticated and subtle than 'Pagliacci'. An excellent performance in general with the soprano Lynne Strow being consistently excellent in the title role. Hers is a new voice for me and I shall certainly be looking for other recordings that she has made. The baritone reminds me of Panerai and the only disappointment is the tenor who lets the side down a bit, although not to the point of destroying one's enjoyment of the piece. I would have given 4 and a half stars (the tenor stops me giving it 5) if I could have given the extra half star!

Leave It Alone.......2001-03-26
I love this opera and own it in many incarnations: the wonderful French version with tenor Leopold Simeneau; Italian with mezzos Podles, Larrmore, Horne and baritone Fischer-Dieskau. All of them offer something special. This performance, however, is a resounding dud. The sound isn't bad by live performance (l971) standards, but Ozawa offers the slowest, dullest conducting I have ever heard. Since the accompanying leaflet offers absolutely no information beyond a plot summary, it's impossible to tell which of the several alternate versions of the opera this is, but in any case much familiar music is deleted, and the singers offer no embellishments to balance the funereal pace. The soloists have their moments, but Verrett is much better experienced on her commercial recording with Fasano and the Virtuosi de Roma (?). I purchased this recording for the unusual pairing of Verrett and the wonderful Stella, but they, as well as the listener, are fighting a losing battle.

Magnificent live but poor sound.......2002-12-09
It's a wonderful live performance at La Scala stage of 1954. Vivid ad inspired conducting by Karajan, excellent singing by Schwarzkopf as Countess and Seefried as Susanna.
The only but major drawback of this set is poor sound quality.

Customer Reviews:
For heaven's sake, don't confuse this with opera!.......2005-11-21
Sheesh, the marketing mavens are at it AGAIN!
With all due respect to the admirable enthusiasm of the previous reviewer, EMI has effectively shortchanged him with this collection of highlights. Let's be absolutely clear about this: an opera is more than an assemblage of bleeding hunks. An opera is (or should be) a large-scale work with both a dramatic and a musical arc. Both of these arcs are undercut and mangled in the process of selecting highlights, thus providing a falsified picture of what the composer, librettist(s), conductor and cast intended.
Buy, buy, buy, absolutely amazing!.......2005-03-01
I had allready seen this box a few times before I bought it and I had always planned to buy it, never having looked at the price, so when I came to the shop yesterday I saw it again and I checked the price aswell: 15 euros only (about fifteen dollars aswell)!!!
So I bought it and I don't regret it! As a beginning Puccini-fan I don't have so many of his operas on CD at home, like this I have pieces of five of his great operas for 15 euros (one hour per opera!!!!)
Now one might think: so much for so little money, it must be bad, unknown singers. They're not!
La Boheme is with beatifull Mirella Freni, Nicolai Gedda and Mario Sereni, and ooooh how well a Mimì is Freni. How sweet, how shy and also how funny!
Madama Butterfly is with Victoria de los Angeles, Jussi Bjorling and Mario Sereni again. And allthough De los Angeles is not such a young Cio-cio-san in the first act (she's still AMAZING!!!) she makes up (and how??!!) in the second act. She is very good! That's the only word. And ofcourse the great Jussi Bjorling with his understanding of the music, the text and his smooth toning is absolutely amazing. In Madama Butterfly there's an aria from Cio-cio-san in the second act called: Che tua madre dovra. Ofcourse I had heard it before, but the way De los Angeles portrays the character here, is from unknown beauty!
Turandot is good. Montserrat Caballé is very good at portraying this character and sings it nice, not as good as Sutherland, but still good. José Carreras is very beautifull in this recording, allthough I'm not a particular fan of his, having Mirella Freni as Líu is pure luxery, but ooh so touching!
Manon Lescaut I had never heard before. So this was a big treat for me. With Montserrat Caballé in the title-role (she's one of my favorite sopranos) and Placido Domingo as De Grieux (I'm not really into Domingo, but he's good in this role). The pure and innocent pianissimos of Caballé are so beatiful that it almost seems inhuman.
There were two parts that I liked particularly: first the famous intermezzo and second the song of the small mezzo part in this opera. Absolutely a great opera from wich I would like to hear more.
The last opera this box containes is Tosca. It's not my first Tosca, but it is my second. The first I heard was with Angela Gheorghiu, Roberto Alagna and Ruggero Raimondi. It was good for a while, but I didn't really like the singers (except for Raimondi) so I quit listening to it. Then I heard this and discovered how beautiful Tosca can be.
Renata Scotto sing a Tosca only definable as magnificent. Because that's what it is, with her huge Puccini-voice she tackles the part as if it's nothing. Her acting is great and with a lot of stile.
Domingo as Cavaradossi is nice, but he's not the right tenor for this part. Renato Bruson is great as Scarpia.
From Tosca the parts I like the most are the dialoges between Tosca and Scarpia in the second act and the very end of the opera, when Tosca waits for the executioners to shoot, then discovers Mario is dead and then jumps. The music with that is so gripping!
This box is worth it's five stars, because of the dazzling singers in every opera and the price of the box!!! Buy, you won't regret it.

Charming Opera, Fine Cast, Fair Sound, No Text.......2002-04-18
The comic operas of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) possess a unique charm, especially those based - like this one - on the Venetian plays by the 18th century dramatist Carlo Goldoni. "I Quat(t)ro Rusteghi" (1906) translates roughly as "The 4 Curmudgeons" & is generally considered his masterpiece in this genre. The slender plot of Venetian middle-class life concerns 2 old-fashioned fathers who pre-arrange a marriage for their respective son & daughter; the wives contrive to set up a secret meeting between the young pair so they can find out if they like each other. The libretto is cleverly shaped so Wolf-Ferrari has maximum opportunity for a variety of solos & (particularly) ensembles. Verdi's "Falstaff" stands in the background, as indeed does the whole tradition of Italian opera buffa; the German side of the composer's heritage also plays its part - there are moments that suggest an Italian Humperdinck - & comes amusingly to the fore when a couple of the pompous husbands start sounding suspiciously like 1st cousins to Wagner's Mastersingers. There's a particular combination of elegance & wistfulness in the best of Wolf-Ferrari's music that gives it a special flavor. Furthermore, he had a natural flair for the stage & for comedy in particular. "I Quatro Rusteghi" is a piece full of warmth & good humor & well worth getting to know.
There are now 3 recordings of the opera available on CD, all of them good, but varying a lot in sound quality. My personal favorite is the 1953 (radio) studio version (now at budget price on Warner Fonit 8573874812), to my ears a still unsurpassed combination of singing, acting, well-balanced mono sound & splendid conducting by Alfredo Simonetto. In a strong cast - Carlo Ulvi's out-of-tune Simon is the only really weak link - Fernando Corena (Lunardo) is a standout in every way & Agnese Dubbini's over-the-top Margarita a special delight. This is the only version to come with a complete Italian libretto, as well as a (very general) English synopsis.
The other 2 are live recordings of stage performances. First, from the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in 1967 (Mondo Musica MFOH 10701): lively, well-sung - Ugo Benelli (Filipeto) exceptional - occasionally untidy musically (under Bruno Boga), in broadcast-quality stereo (with the unfortunate exception of the 2 extended instrumental pieces in Act I, which sound dim & muddy, & are marred by backstage noise), with lots of laughter from the audience; detailed English synopsis, no libretto. Finally, this 1969 version from Turin, which shares 3 singers with the Venice version - Edda Vincenzi (Marina), Alessandro Maddalena (Simon/Cancian) & the excellent Alfredo Mariotti (Maurizio/Simon); tenor Mario Carlin, Filipeto (the "juvenile") in '53, now sings the "character role" of Count Riccardo. Ettore Gracis leads a well-paced & -played reading, in tolerable if somewhat muffled mono sound - the balance suggests that it was recorded in the theater, not from a broadcast. Interest naturally focuses on 3 legendary names: soprano Magda Olivero (Felice), mezzo Fedora Barbieri (Margarita) & bass Nicola Rossi-Lemeni (Lunardo). Barbieri, rock-solid vocally, is not surprisingly an assertive & funny presence. Olivero is always elegant, refined & musically scrupulous; it's good to have a memento of her work in comedy from this great tragedienne of the lyric stage, tho' the role hardly makes use of her deepest dramatic gifts. Rossi-Lemeni, somewhat past his prime, is short of voice on the bottom, no match for Corena's supreme interpretation. The audience, like the performance, warms up as the opera progresses. No synopsis or libretto.
Interesting opera: OK performance: right price.......1999-11-02
This is an acceptable version of a not very well known opera. The sound is rather dim (although quite listenable) and the performance, although generally quite polished, sometimes seems to be curiously tentative. It's almost as if the whole cast lose concentration every so often. Another problem is that the balance between the voices and the orchestra is rather strange: it is fine most of the time, but when some of the singers (particularly the male ones) sing loud, they tend to disappear under the orchestra!
But the set is worth getting for the sake of listening to a most enjoyable opera. Think of a sort of combination of Rossini, Verdi and Puccini, and you will have an idea of the general profile of the opera, but the composer is actually very much his own man, with a distinctive and rather suave style. The opera is, in fact, a delight from start to finish, and makes one want to hear other operas by this composer (ant they are around, but you will pay a lot more for them).
Once again, then, thanks to the bargain Gala label for making an unusual opera available to the interested and the impecunious.

Despite 3 "Names," Not Top Choice for this Charming Comedy.......2003-05-27
The comic operas of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) have a unique charm, especially the 4 based on the Venetian plays of the 18th century dramatist Carlo Goldoni. "I Quatro Rusteghi" (1906) translates as "The 4 Curmudgeons" & is generally considered Wolf-Ferrari's masterpiece in this genre. Goldoni's slender plot of Venetian middle-class life concerns 2 old-fashioned fathers who pre-arrange a marriage for their respective son & daughter; the wives contrive to set up a secret meeting between the young pair so they can find out if they like each other. The libretto is cleverly shaped to provide Wolf-Ferrari with maximum opportunity for a variety of solos & ensembles. Verdi's "Falstaff" stands in the background, as indeed does the whole tradition of Italian opera buffa; the German side of the composer's heritage also plays its part - there are moments that suggest an Italian Humperdinck. The combination of elegance & wistfulness in the best of Wolf-Ferrari's music gives it a special flavor, and he had a natural flair for stage comedy. "I Quatro Rusteghi" is an expertly crafted piece full of warmth & good humor, & well worth hearing.
There are now 3 recordings of the opera available on CD, all of them good performances, but varying a lot in sound quality. My personal favorite is the 1953 (radio) studio version (at budget price on Warner Fonit 8573874812), a still unsurpassed combination of singing, acting, well-balanced mono sound & splendid conducting by Alfredo Simonetto. In a strong cast, Fernando Corena (Lunardo) is a standout in every way & Agnese Dubbini (a vivid Margarita) especially funny. This is the only version to come with a complete Italian libretto, as well as an English synopsis.
The other 2 are live recordings of stage performances. From the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in 1967 (Mondo Musica MFOH 10701): lively, well-sung - Ugo Benelli (Filipeto) exceptional - occasionally untidy musically (under Bruno Boga), in broadcast-quality stereo (with the unfortunate exception of the 2 extended instrumental pieces in Act I, which sound dim & muddy, & are marred by backstage noise), with lots of laughter from the audience; detailed English synopsis. Finally, this 1969 version from Turin - previously issued on Gala - which shares 3 singers with the Venice version: Edda Vincenzi (Marina), Alessandro Maddalena (Simon/Cancian) & the excellent Alfredo Mariotti (Maurizio/Simon); tenor Mario Carlin, Filipeto (the "juvenile") in '53, now sings the "character role" of Count Riccardo. Ettore Gracis leads a well-paced & -played reading, in tolerable if muffled "pirate" mono. There are 3 famous names: soprano Magda Olivero (Felice), mezzo Fedora Barbieri (Margarita) & bass Nicola Rossi-Lemeni (Lunardo). Barbieri, rock-solid vocally, is an assertive & funny presence. Olivero is always elegant, refined & musically scrupulous; it's good to have a memento of her work in comedy from this great tragedienne of the lyric stage, tho' the role hardly makes use of her deepest dramatic gifts. Rossi-Lemeni sounds somewhat past his prime & is short of voice on the bottom; no match for Corena's fully rounded comic portrait. The audience, like the performance, warms up as the opera progresses. Note: No synopsis or libretto.
