Koop combines a wealth of summery melodies and floating vocals with the acid jazz of Gilles Peterson and the laid-back trip-hop aesthetic of Jazzanova and Peter Kruder. The result is a sweet, effortless sound on Waltz For Koop. Starting off with a Brazilian feel, Koop enlists Astrud Gilberto-like chanteuses Cecilia Stalin and Yukimi Nagano to augment the mood, while later, electronic trickster-legend Earl Zinger shows up for a decadent "Modal Mile." The record takes an otherworldly turn with the presence of Chicago folk-jazz artist Terry Callier, as his wistful, spiritual pipes give "In a Heartbeat" a depth that eludes most DJs, who go for electronic lounge and end up with elevator music. Good-natured and accessible without being trendy, Waltz puts a lot of other "chill" collections to shame. --Matthew Cooke

Product Description
Koop comes from a universe where Miles Davis never made Bitches Brew, replacing swing with funk, and instead double basses kept walking and jazz kept swinging all the way until the sampler arrived to chop it up. Not electronic music with a touch of jazz, but jazz sparingly laced with electronics. Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson, both from Sweden's main university-town Uppsala, now residing in Stockholm, were the first two jazzheads in their hometown to lose interest in the perpetual Hammond organ-licking of Jimmy Smith. Instead, they embarked together down the more rewarding paths of Hard-bop and raw Latin beats, avoiding fusion's tendency to dilute the original spirit of jazz. Waltz For Koop has been re-released by Palm Pictures with a added tracks and a bonus DVD, containing the acclaimed videos for "Summer Sun" and "Glomd," as well as two remixes, "Summer Sun" (Markus Enochson Remix) and "Relaxin' at Club F***n" (Dorfmeister vs. Madrid de los Austrias Version).

5 out of 5 stars DON'T LET THE COVER FOOL YOU!.......2007-06-18

LOVE IT ! EVERY TRACK IS SMOOTH AND CLASSY! IF YOU ARE NOT INTO LOUNGE OR RETRO DOWNTEMPO, THEN WAKE UP AND TRY THIS ONE OUT ......TIMELESS

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for bright nights and summer sun, baby!.......2006-10-03

This is light, breezy lounge jazz, perfect for cocktail hour by the pool. As dozens of your close-knit circle of VIP friends roll up for their sundowners, they will be pleasantly intrigued but charmed by these sounds. Time to dig out the cruisewear and head for the islands

5 out of 5 stars Smoooooth!.......2006-01-03

This is soooo smooth, so luxurious, sooo...aaaaah!
I love it.

I first heard tracks from this CD on last FM online and loved it ever since.

I listen to this type of music after work, in solitude, with a nice drink.

4 out of 5 stars 1-2-3 Waltz for Koop.......2005-08-25

Simple jazz with the sophistication expected from old jazz tradition. It's nice to hear really smooth jazz without the commericial sound heard on most so-called smooth jazz FM radio these days. Very nice blend of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Vocals are simple with somewhat complicated key changes that would really frustrate today's no talent rap artist who think talking fast and crude is music. It's good to know that there are still musicians out there who can truly create new jazz sounds without sampling or copying someone else's work in an effort to make up for lack of musical skill.

4 out of 5 stars Decided to chill? Do it with CLASS !!!.......2005-06-22

This is not your everyday jazz CD. Nope.
This is not your everyday downtempo/lounge CD. No way !

This is your special ocassion CD !!! This is a journey that begins with beautiful Jazz (including latin-jazz) touched by smooth electronics. It then takes a soft turn into folky-bluessy-housy music (hard to tell), to finally end with some great downtempo tracks. I should mention that all of this happens while you enjoy silky beautiful vocals and groovy bass lines. This is really good music. NU-JAZZ at its best (and at its sexiest too).

Groovy, classy, sexy... Just right.

4 out of 5 stars Early Koop, Remixed.......2007-05-14

A must have if you are looking for Nu Jazz. Koop are great! Koop remixed is OK but you must remember this CD is homemade.
You should really get the "Islands" from Koop to really appreciate them.

4 out of 5 stars Electronica meets Jazz........2005-06-22

Electronica meets jazz, what more can I say? If you like Nu-Jazz, if you like chill-out/downtempo, if you like drum n' bass, this CD is for you. As good as the original CD, this remixes version is just a little bit edgier than the former. There's a touch of K&D, Bebel Gilberto, Portsihead, Emiliana Torrini, Miguel Migs, and many more in this masterpiece... I couldn't decide which is best. In fact, I am glad I have them both. They both are excellent in their own way.

1 out of 5 stars Umm...well it's...hmm.......2004-02-13

This album is a let down. I fell in love with "Waltz for Koop" and thought that because some nice artist were doing a remix that "Alternative Takes" would be even better. Well I have to say that I was disappointed with the album. One remix in particular "Modal Mile" was almost laughable( I have to admit I am laughing at it now). And that is awful, because I loved Earl Zinger's version on the original album. "In A Heartbeat" and "Summer Sun"(Carlito remix) weren't that bad. I don't give up easy, I will give this album more try. I just may have not be receptive to it right now. Overall this is not a must have album unlike "Waltz for Koop".

4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2004-01-04

A wonderful complimentary remix album for the classic waltz for koop. This remix/alternate outakes is well done with great taste. The remixers choose to keep the original vocals intact which is better than just sampling the vocals. The remix sound is more electronic in arrangement with lace of jazz, but it is still very organic nonetheless. Highly recommened.

1 out of 5 stars It's just OK.......2004-01-01

There is nothing special about these mixes and does not have repeated listening quality to me. I find these mixes boring and not imaginative. The reason I'm saying this cause "Waltz for Koop" the album where these mixes came from is a masterpiece! One of my most listened to albums. This album does not compliment the amazing quality of the original. Also recommend "Streetlife Originals" one of my favorite albums of all time.
