After a decade's absence, Teena Marie returns as Cash Money's Godmother. On this evidence, her reign as La Dona should be as sweet as when she was known as Lady T. At nearly 80 minutes, the CD sprawls with the fervor of something once pent-up; surprisingly, it really doesn't feel overlong. Teena Marie has barely lost a step, either as a vocalist or as the original thinker who won over audiences back in the day. "Makavelli Never Lied" is a tribute to the erotic power of music that namechecks everyone from the title rapper to John Lennon, while "My Body's Hungry," "Baby I'm Your Fiend," and duets with Gerald Levert and old cohort Rick James are a touch more direct in acknowledging the bedroom side of the equation. Elsewhere, she cops to a dancehall influence ("Recycle Hate to Love") and brings a tribute to daughter Alia Rose ("High Yellow Girl"). La Dona is one of the year's most welcome releases--and not only because it's good to have an old friend back on wax. --Rickey Wright

...un po' troppo di follie...?.......2007-01-20
Programmatically conceived in the same vain as it's predecessor on Alia Vox ('La Folia' AV9805), 'Altre Follie' traces the development of the renowned "Folia" progression which was to be the source of inspiration for scores of compositions, spanning 5 centuries and culminating in the oeuvres of composers such as Nielson and Rachmaninov. As on the previous disc, the arrangement of the selected material is primarily chronological, although here there is greater emphasis on solo contribution. The outstanding calibre of the individual performers ensures the resounding success of this decision, most obviously in the virtuosic fireworks of Manfredo Kraemer (violin), Rolf Lislevand (guitar/theorbo) and Michael Behringer (harpsichord).
In truth though, this is probably not the kind of CD which is best appreciated from end to end, given the fact that much of the 'variation' is (inevitably) achieved in these works by means of rhythm or surface decoration rather than harmonic elaboration. In this resepct, Santiago de Murcia's 'Gallegas' - significantly bearing a strong resemblance in places to Martin y Coll's 'Diferencias Sobra La Gayta' [i.e. NOT 'La Folia'], c.1700 - provides a welcome relief from the prevalent similarity of keys and motifs, and Savall clearly thought so too given that Murcia's 'Folias Ytalianas' [1732] - a truer representation of the Folia progression - are avoided. Subtle variety could in fact have been achieved in other ways, for example by drawing upon works which exploit changes in either ensemble (eg Ribayaz, 'Folias' ['Luz y Norte...', 1677] for harp and guitars) or style (eg the overtly French setting by Jean Henri d'Anglebert ['Pieces de Clavecin', 1689]).
Musicologically the CD presents few major difficulties, and as an overall result it is a praiseworthy fusion of stylish playing within a historically informed backdrop. Track 1, however, is a notable exception. Admittedly, it is 'an improvisation', but one nonetheless unashamedly based on the 'Cachua Serranita' preserved in the Codex Martinez Companon of c.1783-5 (Tomo II, fol 192). The presence of any viol in such a late work would be problematic, but is surely even more so in one with a specific performance note ("...qe cantaron, y baylaron '8' pallas" - 'pallas' signifying the young women who sang and danced in Commemoration of the feast of the 'Virgen de la Puerta' which the text concerns) in a collection copiously illustrated with images of the musicians/instruments who performed this music.
Still, this CD can be easily recommended - one would expect no less from Savall, of course - even if it is perhaps best enjoyed in small sections.
Altre Follie.......2006-11-02
This great music has survived 500 years of man's madness and destruction for our enjoyment. The quality of interpretation is worth five stars. Classical music at its best, the combination of instruments and perfomers makes it perfect music to listen again and again until you have captured all the sounds and identified each instrument. Great to listen to on an Ipod or a superior sound system.

Completely enthralled.......2005-03-08
This is a delightful disc. If you appreciate the technique of Jordi Savall, and the siren sweet voice of Montserrat Figueras, you will be instantly captivated by their daughter.
In what appears to me to be a very personal project based upon moving poems authored by Miguel Marti i Pol (dedication appears untranslated in Catalan), Ms. Savall is invoking a song tradition of harp playing accompanied by the singer which was long ago lost in all but a couple of cultures. It thrives in the rich cultural Catalan region, as is evidenced by Ms. Savall's own compositions.
You too will submit to her enthralling spell.
Okay CD.......2005-01-19
This CD is okay, but once you have heard one song you have heard them all. The music gets a little repetitive, and Arianna has a bit of heaviness in her voice that I do not personally like. It is a nice CD, but not one that I would listen to over and over again.
Stunning new talent.......2004-09-25
Whilst the classical training shines through, her composition often surprises with its contemporary feel (although she nods to her Catlan roots).
Lovers of harp, and young soprano voice need look no further. The lady has some pair of lungs.
Musically this is ocassionally reminiscent of Andreas Vollenwieder although far more minimalist.. but then she starts singing...and quite simply...WOW!
She's so perfectly in control of her vocal instrument, and she's so pitched. How she manages this but still sounds so relaxed, I will never know. I could go on about her technically, but that would diminish her voice, a thing of great beauty.
Worth the entry for "Bella Terra" alone. I look forward to more of this young woman's work.
Just beautiful.......2004-04-13
Arianna Savall proves herself to be quite an accomplished singer, composer, and harpist in this new collection of mainly her own compositions. This is not my typical type of music, but I still listen to it constantly, and I bought it as soon as it was available in America. I'm glad that it is once again available, as it was out of stock for a very long time. Savall's pure straight-tone may not appeal to some classical vocal buffs, but as part of the Catalan early music scene ruled by her parents, Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras, straight tone comes natural to her. Her voice is clearer than her mother's and, if somewhat less emotional, it is also more ethereal and her technique is solid. The songs themselves run from Middle Eastern influenced to Catalan folk songs.

Here lies master collection from ten years and fifty discs of examples from baroque era performed by choirs, soloists and instrumentalists.
Conducted by energetic Robert King and his King's Consort, this is just superb!
It will introduce one to baroque or add to one's enjoyment. Especially enjoyed Purcell's "Hear my prayer, O Lord" and Gabrieli's "Salvator noster."

The Ars subtileor rules........2006-11-21
Even though the title is a slight misnomer as more than half of the tracks are post-ars subtileor, this is an absolutely marvellous CD. Starting with Philipoctus de Caserta (ca.1370) and ending with Antoine Busnoys (d.1492), this CD surveys some of the best polyphonic secular and sacred music of the post-Ars nova Middle Ages.
The pieces are superbly performed by some of the very best early musicians of our day including the Orlando Consort, Ensemble organum and the Hilliard Ensemble. I highly recommend this CD for pleasure or instruction.

At last, a replacement for Roberto Szidon's long-deleted recording of Cirandas! This is one of Villa-Lobos's most delightful works, a long piano suite (41:46 in this recording) of folk-flavored pieces that progress from one charming idea to another and never outlast their material. The Baby's Family, the first of two suites, is also charming music, made popular by Artur Rubinstein. The Chopin tribute is one of those crocks of musical dishwater Villa-Lobos stuck his hands into when his mind was on something else, but it's brief and comes at the end of the disc. Brazilian pianist Sonia Rubinsky plays with stylistic insight and gorgeous piano tone, very well captured by Naxos in a recording that sat in the can for almost five years before it was finally issued. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Rubinsky : a new reference in Villa Lobos.......2005-04-18
When Villa Lobos listened for the first time the works of Debussy and Stravinsky ( The Russian Ballets of Diaghlev danced in Rio de Janeiro in 1913 and 1917) he found the way to create something really adequate to involve Brazilian authentic tunes . The first important period of Villa Lobos as a composer involve two series of works: The Prole do Bebê ( No 1 and No 2) and the Choros. Prole do Bebê is full of Pentatonic and whole tone scales, and the Harmony of some of the pieces are deeply influenced by Stravinsky: The Polichinelo is a Brazilian brother of the Russian white/black harmony of Petrushka. For the first time one Brazilian composer was proud of our authentic songs and he placed these lovely melodies in the middle of a very sophisticated piano writing and with new harmonies that fitted wonderfully with his purposes. The Cirandas is also involved with the child's world. I would like to remember that The Cirandas are not important only as a wonderful composition, but I'm sure too that without this work a lot of authentic folkloric melodies would be lost ,as our childs don't play no more singing these melodies. Times of globalization...
The Prole No 1 and the Cirandas are among the most often played and recorded piano works of Heitor Villa Lobos. The references for the Prole do Bebe No 1 are of course Aline van Barentzen , that recorded the Prole 1 and 2 in Paris for EMI in the presence of the composer ( unfortunately the CD version of the album "Villa Lobos par lui meme" doesn't include this important recording, that was present in the LP version), Nelson Freire( unfortunately he recorded only the Prole 1) and Anna Stella Schic . For the Cirandas the references are again Anna Stella Schic ( the only pianist that recorded the complete works for piano by Villa Lobos), Roberto Szidon and Caio Pagano.
I'm profoundly satisfied with this first record of this important project ( It will be a series of 9 Cds, I believe). Sonia Rubinsky plays very well, and I would like to prize her attitude about the fidelity towards the printed score. As the Prole do Bebe No 1 includes some very often played compositions , they are normally played with some liberties and "traditions". As Mahler used to say, "Tradition is Schlamperei". I really prefer to listen these pieces as Sonia Rubinsky plays: as they are written. One can prefer the exceptional musicality of Nelson Freire in the Prole, or the analytical sound of Caio Pagano in the Cirandas. But Sonia is a first rate pianist too. She has a wonderful sonority .With her flawless musicality we can say that this integral began as a new reference in Villa Lobos discography .
Lively Piano Music from Brazil.......2003-05-20
Villa-Lobos, who is of course the great composer of Brazil, has a less secure place in the history of modern music of the West, so it is good that his art is getting a reappraisal, with various record labels committed to issuing cycles of his works-the symphonies and string quartets, for example. Villa-Lobos wrote a great deal of piano music that isn't heard as much as it used to be, so the present CD, the first in a two-volume series (maybe there will be more) from Naxos is welcome indeed.
If Ginastera is the Bartok of the pampas, Villa-Lobos, in his piano music at least, might be seen as early Prokofiev or Stravinsky transported to the Amazon. As with Ginastera, there is much of surface glitter and of grit, but the emotional depths that Ginastera plumbs in his more inward music seems sorely lacking in much of this piano music by Villa-Lobos. Maybe inwardness wasn't on the composer's agenda as he tried to recreate the world of childhood in these pieces. But I wish he had taken his cue from Schumann, whose "Kinderscenen" is great music primarily because it doesn't shy away from the truth that childhood isn't all fun and games, though the troubling dissonances that intrude on the surface serenity of Villa-Lobos' "The Countess" and "What Beautiful Eyes!" hint at this fact.
Anyway, there is certainly a place for brilliance and grit, which Villa-Lobos' music has in abundance, and especially if you don't listen to all these pieces at one sitting, you will appreciate the freshness and liveliness of Villa-Lobos' invention. I think you'll also find Villa-Lobos' brand of musical primitivism, which intelligently combines European modernism and native New World musical elements, intriguing. You'll probably be amused, too, by "Little Black Doll" and "Look at the Pretty Birdy," which start off as perfect Debussy knockoffs but quickly absorb Villa-Lobos' own Latin-tinged idiom. Certainly, it's easy to see why the Petrouchka-influenced "Punch" from "A Prole do Bebe" suite was at one time an encore favorite with pianists such as Villa-Lobos' champion Artur Rubinstein. Then there is the jazzy "In This Street" from "Cirandas," which illustrates Villa-Lobos' unique assimilation of European and Brazilian popular music.
Sonia Rubinsky brings the requisite pianistic chops to this recital. She has great technique and finds no hurdles she can't manage in Villa-Lobos' sometimes grueling keyboard writing. But she also brings delicacy, charm, and wit to her assignment as well, which breathes life and purpose into the quieter pieces like "What Beautiful Eyes!" A first-rate sound recording, too, from Fisher Hall in Santa Rosa, California. This disc is recommended without hesitation.
Charming Villa-Lobos pieces for children........2001-12-18
The move from the large-scale orchestra we may be more familiar with to the piano does not mean that the music of Villa-Lobos loses any of its energy, rhythm, colour or beauty. The two major works here, 'A Prole do Bebe' (the Baby's family) and 'Cirandas' (a Portuguese dance) evoke the world of childhood, and are said to belong to the traditon of Schumann and Tchaikovsky, but the warm colours and rich harmonies are more tropical than those chilly Europeans, with Villa-Lobos brilliantly incorporating and reworking Brazilian folk material. The first wittily depicts the personalities of a child's dolls; the set of dances push their good-natured skittishness into real emotion at times. The 'Homage a Chopin' give a famously restrained and reflective idiom some sunny and dramatic virtuosity. Brazilian pianist Sonia Rubinsky knows these pieces and their influences well, and responds to them with intelligence, empathy and humour.
More, please!.......2001-02-28
I have heard Villa-Lobos' A prole do Bebê in various interpretations, but I cannot remember it ever has impressed me more than in Sonia Rubinsky's recording of it, which is utterly virtuoso (I mean a natural virtuosity without bravado)and at the same time very warm and colorful. As in `A prole do Bebê' the `Cirandas', on the same record, show a surpring succesion of various moods, dreamy or exciting, tender or fiery and passionate. There is a continuous tension between strong rhythm and free flowing melody, and a sonority that is very well preserved in the excellent recording. She does not `hammer' the Cirandas as if they were written by Bartòk - a pitfall that seems not altogether imaginary. This is only the first of a series of discs on which Sonia Rubinsky will play Villa Lobos' complete piano works. I hope it won't take too long before we will be able to hear them all. In a broadcast by The Radio Suisse Romande I heard a marvelous sample of the net yet available second volume, which I am eagerly awaiting, as well as the other volumes.
Native?.......2000-10-25
The playing here is rather weak and one has to wonder if being a native of a particular country can be a benefit or a hindrence? As for fantasy, which is much needed in the music of Villa Lobos, I don't feel there is much> The quality of this recording seems o.k. I heard a performance of this pianists RUDEPOEMA and was equally unimpressed! As for the composer? Villa lobos is Fantastic! Interestingly enogh, the pianist Deborah Halasz has embarked on a interesting complete Villa lobos piano music set thet outshines the other competitors, including the mundane playing of Marc Andre Hamelin

I LOVE IT!.......2007-01-12
TEENA is BAAAACK! I have just been missing hearing her voice, nobody can sing like her! My favorite is #2. Then I also like 5,6,8,16,17
It's not the teena I have been used to but It had 5 good songs. I am definitely a ballads lover, That's why I only liked those. It's great for romantic times.
I'M JUST GLAD SHE BACK..........2007-01-12
I got "La Dona" b4 "Sapphire" was born...which is a good thing because I can really compare both to her product b4 her absence.
"La Dona" is a great album but not as great as "Sapphire". Her `old self' (to me) was not present. You could hear it wanting to come through but you could tell "Cash Money" hand their paws all in it.
I heard my Teena in "Sapphire". I got my Teena back in "Sapphire".
She sang for all of us love-starved, wishing we had a deep-dark chocolate, thick voiced, big and tassstyyy, strong-ruff han...(sorry...let me clear my throat--I do apologize)...MAN....
Ahhh!...the music. Traxx 6, 12 and 16 are my favorites..."Off the Chain"-- that stank (skip) and "Makavelli Never Lied" (skiiiiiiiiii-pa).
"Off the Chain" was deplorable. The "Intro" left something to be desired as well (and it was to damn long). Just get to tha' good stuff gurl.
All in all though, I was just stoked that she dropped the album.
Seriously, I almost didn't care what she was going to sound like. You know--when you uh-serious fan, you tend to settle for anything from your favorite one as long as they give you something.
After "Sapphire".... I know now she is back and back to stay. That suits me just fine.
Bravado like this is rarely so justified. More hooks than you can count!.......2006-12-10
If you think Teena Marie is a one-hit wonder who never really was, then I beg you to give this a couple of spins. When it came out, I sampled it online and figured it was probably a bunch of hoo-hah. Plus I was extremely wary of anything with modern R&B trappings. Well, after a couple of years, I finally got it. And I once again discovered a gem that could have so easily slipped through my fingers.
Time has been unusually generous with Teena's voice. Her range is astounding and her urgency and depth is totally believable. Right off the bat she proves it with "I'm Still In Love", as she hits the very highs and lows of her voice with skill and ease. As she begs all the ladies and sisters to her side to scream with her, you'd think she was heading the hippest gospel choir in town. She even makes references to the almighty in song and liner notes, but that doesn't stop her from exploring the erotic in scorchers like "Honey Call", "Baby I'm Your Fiend", and "My Body's Hungry". But she explores the erotic in such a tasteful and mature way that, despite those titles, you are really very moved by them. And even if you are not looking to be moved, you will be hooked by the countless vocal and musical hooks throughout the entire album.
This album shouldn't work, considering her age, the production values, and the subject matter, but you will never second-guess any sound she makes throughout the whole album. She makes no bones about wanting to climb a throne here, but after a few listens you will be convinced she should be there. And you will wonder why it took her so long to demand it.
What more can I say?.......2006-12-02
La Dona is quite simply one of the best CDs I have ever listened to in my life! It is absolutely lovely. A must have for the Teena Marie fan and anyone else who enjoys good music. She is a musical genius!
Talent to Burn; Lov'in to Earn; La Dona Sweetly Croons.......2006-10-14
One Rolling Stone reviewer once remarked he'd be prefectly happy if Teena Marie simply sang the phone book. She possesses a remarkably nuanced, emotive voice with a huge range able to fully command so many different musical styles. La Dona: Somewhere between sexy jazz, a bit of near-rap, and smooth funk with some latin flava. This CD has lots of stylistic diversity and La Dona allows other to share the stage with her. What doesn't change: Her fabulous voice, excellent production, flawless backup vocals and arrangements. Something else to mention: This CD is practically a double album -- lots of material, and all worthwhile. Thanks Lady T!

Customer Reviews:
A Classic Recording.......2007-03-09
This was a great buy for me. The power and accuracy of Placido's voice are demonstrated well. Two CD's and 34 songs--just can't beat that for the price.
A must for a Placido fan.......2005-04-23
If you've continously listened to this master of tenors and said "wow, I like it, I want to listen even more of him", then raise it to 5 stars, which is the rating I personally give the CD; HOWEVER, if you've only heard him once or not at all, you might want to wait a while and get to know him and other tenors better. Why? Well, disc 1 is the "classical" disc, with arias from famous operas and choral pieces by Puccini and the like, but disc 2, the "modern" or "popular" disc, contains music that will leave you a bit puzzled, since it's is not for everyone; a lot of people have never heard zarzuela or tunes by Manzanero or Lecuona. In short, this disc is better suited for fans of Placido or people who want to know him better, if not, it still is a top choice, and this way you just might fall in love with him (well, his singing, not him literally).
Great for what it is.......2005-01-13
I agree with the previous poster that this does not contain his great dramatic stuff like otello/wagner, but the collection is a beautiful one. There are some great recordings here, and his crossover stuff(maria, Dulcinea, impossible dream) is very interesting. His opera is of course impecable and brilliant. Finally we get to hear Domingo's high C in Di Quella Pira, and its a good one. The zarzuela or spanish operetta type songs and are wonderful.
I found this to be beautiful and exhilirating to listen to.
Certainly not ALLL the Essential Domingo.......2005-01-03
I grew up with Placido Domingo. Not in the sense of being boyhood friends, but rather in the sense that he was part of my "Golden Age" at the Metropolitan Opera. Of the "Three Tenors" (more Marketing hype than useful grouping of three fine singers) Domingo was the most dramatic - the "heaviest" of the three. His repertoire extended well beyond the lyric - and that's why this collection is not all the "essential" Domingo, but rather offers an interesting look at the lighter, more lyric side of Placido Domingo. You won't find Lohengrin or Otello here, but you will find many of the more lyric tenor arias from Verdi, Puccini and Donizetti - to name a few.
There is an "edge" to Domingo's voice that perhaps accounts for his ability to transition successfully into the heavier repertory. I find that tonal quality particularly noticeable in this collection - and sometimes too pronounced. On the other hand, there are a few wonderful surprises. His "Una furtiva lagrima" from L'elisir d'amore is a stand out. Its rare you here a tenor with this much power sing the role. The duet "Bima dagli occhi" from Madama Butterfly with Renata Scotto, again casts Pinkerton with a quality tenor not often found in the opera house any more. I loved the selection from Gianni Schicchi - when is the last time you found Rinuccio cast with this size tenor voice - and the Italian tenor's aria from Rosenkavalier is a treasure from a recording currently out of print. And then there is one of Domingo's signature roles - Jack Rance in Puccini's La Fanciulla del West. No one sings Rance better than Domingo - and the excerpt from the complete recording finds Domingo at his very best.
Disk two is devoted to song - popular and classical. There is a fair amount of tripe - too much cross over (as in who needs to hear Domingo sing "The Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha - Broadway is not Mr. Domingo's genre). But there are some wonderful cuts as well - "Granada" is a Domingo encore specialty, and I was particularly struck by the song "In Pace" from the motion picture Hamlet - I never saw the film and was truly taken aback at how beautiful a song this is, and Domingo's voice soars.
I found the sound of these CD's a bit "tinny". Perhaps its the analogue to digital conversion, but I was disappointed in the overall sound. The album is badly mistitled "The Essential Placido Domingo". Certainly this is some of the essential Domingo - and some very wonderful examples of the lyric Domingo - but there is clearly a volume two to come - the dramatic Placido Domingo. But why wait - buy this fine collection, and then feast on some of the complete recordings such as Otello or Lohengrin.
Solid, comfortable, familiar -- very good!.......2005-01-01
Why wait to see if this reviewer enjoyed Sony's latest offering: I did, and so will you. Hats off to Sony for getting it right with this two CD, 34-song bonanza of Placido Domingo singing -- well, as the name implies -- the essentials, from opera to Broadway to Hollywood, in a mix that keeps its distance while holding it all together in a package that breeds enough familiarity to make even the most harsh tenor critic purr. The more clasical offerings are on the first CD and the more sentimental are on disc two. Interestingly, I found side two more seductive and subdued in tone, and enjoyed listening to Mr. Domingo's interpretation of such popular favorites as "Maria" from "West Side Story", "Dulcinea" from "Man From LaMancha" and a couple duets with John Denver (Perhaps Love) and Maureen McGovern (A Love Without End). The songs selected for side two actually did set a thematic tone. Readers of my reviews know that I place a high value on a CDs overall ability to present what is offered in a bundle that sets and keeps a mood. I usually ask two questions: is it consistent once the mood is set; and does it keep the listener in that mood throughout once established? Here, well, here, I break from tradition and profess some confusion. The mood on disc one is not thematic but ecclectic -- from solo's to duets, from live recordings to studio, from one orchestra to the next, from upbeat to mellow. Technically, while there is some difference in the overall sound quality while switching from one setting to another, it is something you would have to listen for to catch, and becaue of this doesn't amount to a serious flaw as presented. What saves disc one from my usual "tenor blahs" is Mr. Domingo's exceptional voice and the selection of songs chosen -- which, while altering between one mood and another, are all familiar enough that we listen with knowing ease to what we expect. This isn't the kind of CD you put on while holding a conversation with anyone, but rather one you would put on, close your eyes and listen to for its sheer technical achievement -- or more precisely for Mr. Domingo's talent. The voice is clear and strong and passinate and reflects Mr. Domingo's control of his range and interpretive skills. Listen to Verdi's "Ingemisco" with The London Symphony and Leonard Bernstein; Puccini's "Bimba Dagli Occhi" with Renata Scoto (he sings a couple meodies with Scoto) and Umberto Giordino's "Amor ti Vieta" from Fedora to get an idea of what I am referring to here. It took me a couple sessions with each side to settle down and appreciate what was offered. Hopefully this review will get you ready and you will enjoy it from the start. PJW

Customer Reviews:
Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, but What Are the Words?.......2006-07-04
This is a wonderful collection of music spanning many centuries, some of which you are unlikely to encounter anywhere else. The performances are beautiful, too. The one drawback is that the liner notes contain very few song text translations, a big problem for a large CD set with music that is primarily vocal.
outstanding collection.......2002-09-27
I have quite a number of CDs with Medieval Age polyphony, byzantine chant and renaissance music, but this collection goes beyond what could usually be expected from such boxsets. I'd highly recommend it to all.
Awesome.......2001-09-20
This is the best collection of medieval music I have ever heard. The performances are top-notch, and all of the songs are well done. I highly reccomend this collection not only for fans of medieval music, but for any music lover.
7.5 hours of superb music at a most reasonable price........1999-12-24
There isn't a clunker in this set. All the performers are top drawer and the recordings are good. The notes are a little brief and a bit scholarly, but can be ignored easily.
You will get an idea of the different kinds of medieval music as well as the top groups and soloists working currently in the field.
When I got this set, my mother and I listened to all 7+ hours straight through. We then started buying CDs from the different performers we had to hear more from.
At twice the price, this would still be an excellent addition to any classical or medieval music collection, as well as the best introduction to medieval music around.

Customer Reviews:
Zarzuela (bel canto in Spanish).......2001-01-20
This recording is one of the most beautiful ones I have ever heard. On most recordings that contain arias by different singers, you can hear great voices, average, and not so good ones. It is amazing that all the singers on this recording are excellent. This is the first time that I listen to Ms. Bayo's voice and it is so refreshing. Placido Domingo sounds so great singing "Leandro's romanza". The zarzuela is considered bel canto because of the style and vocal exigencies that wonderful music has. Like opera, the stories can be very dramatic, fun and mysterious. Montserrat Caballe, Carreras, Domingo and many other famous singers have done many recordings on it. Viva la zarzuela!!!
A Zarzuela Sampler.......2000-04-26
Viva La Zarzzuela Indeed! Zarzuela is to Madrid as Operetta is to Vienna, but this much admired art form has captivated audiences around the world, especially in Spanish-speaking countries. For this CD, Maria Bayo and a spirited group of other musicians, including famed tenor Placido Domingo, have joined together in a sampling of Zarzuela's very varied repertoire. Individual tracks range from sparkling Fandangos and Mazurkas to rhapsodic Romanzas and an entergetic Habanera. Bayo's lyric presentation of the "Song of the Nightingale (Cancion del Ruisenor)" is particularly affecting but Domingo contributes mightily to the CD's overall impact, most notably in the "Romanza de Leandro". Composers represented include such distinuished artists as Vives, Sorozabal, Breton, Barbieri, and Torroba.
