4 out of 5 stars Mostly good.......2007-05-26

A bit of a mixed bag. The symphonies are superb. This is one of the great symphony cycles. The piano sonatas are good, very good (analog) sound. The quartets are well recorded indeed, but there are better cycles out there. The rest is OK, and the sound is genrally good.

3 out of 5 stars Look at the List of Performers First.......2006-11-17

If you want most of Beethoven sitting on one bookshelf, this is a great bargain (especially if you shop for it on amazon.de). But few if any of the performances represent the pinnacles of interpretation that most listeners demand when Beethoven is the composer. The symphonies for instance: can Blomstedt be compared to Furtwangler or (if you lean toward historically informed instrumentation) Gardiner? Most amazingly, the artists who perform the quartets -- the heart of Beethoven's music -- are not even named in the listing.
On the other hand: Vivaldi: The Masterworks is a collection including the very best interpreters, such as Fabio Biondi! Bach Edition (complete Bach) is a fabulous selection of recordings made over 20 years, and almost the same praise can be given the Complete Mozart.

5 out of 5 stars this "masterworks" series is available much more cheaply from Amazon France.......2006-05-28

there are several sets in this series and it's much cheaper to buy these from Amazon France.

included are bach, beethoven, vivaldi, brahms, dvorak, schubert, handel, hayden, and mendelssohn.

they're even cheaper than the list price once u go through the checkout (VAT is removed for overseas (out-of-france) purchases).

**also, the 'complete works of mozart' set is much cheaper there (or at Amazon Germany), too. the 'complete works of bach' is due out later this year.

3 out of 5 stars You heard guy below: Beethoven needs the royality checks! .......2006-04-07

There is quality beyond the Austrian green cardboard (which is lovely to look at, to say the least). In fact, the performance of the symphonies (Dresden Staatskapelle and Herbert Blomstedt) is alone worth the price. The Staatskapelle is a solid group, and Blomstedt, although less wellknown, holds his own. It should be mentioned that Blomstedt recorded many of the most celebrated 20th composition CDs on the market, and definitely knows his stuff. Peter Wohlert recorded mostly for compiliation lables, but to be selected by the Berlin Phil shows that he is a formdiable conductor in rank as well.

Should you buy this collection then? Given the fact that each CD cost $1.75, there is definitely the bargin factor. However, Beethoven's music desveres the top interpreters and musicians of our time - and this applies for all of his music, not just the symphonic. If you are into bargins, then proceed to buy this collection. However, if you save up a bit more, you can buy Karajan's 1963 Beethovens symphonies along with Kempff's 1956 sonata cycles for just a bit more than 70 bucks. Shop around for the string quartets, and the complete overtures should range anywhere from 15 to 30 bucks depending on the conductor/ensemble.

Overall, this is certainly an exceptional bargin. However, quality matter more than money. Besides, chicks dig people with sophisticated tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Buy my box Set!.......2006-03-21

Awesome deal, 40 CD box set of me, Beethoven! There are 3 principle reasons you should buy this box set:

This box is QUALITY my friend, made of the finest, Austrian cardboard with a lovely green finish, it is made to last! You can just set it on your dresser and whenever you need a Beethoven fix you can just pull a CD out. But don't you hate getting your CDs out of order so you can't find what the hell you're looking for?! Not with this set! They are well organized into symphonies, concerti, sonatas and such, so you can find EXACTLY what your looking for, and they have big numbers on them so you can put them right back where they belong.

And the music! Need we go into this, composed through the inspiration of God himself and penned by the greatest composer who ever walked the streets of Vienna, me, Beethoven! Top notch, all done by top performers and recorded at high, clear, digital quality, stick one in your stereo and rock out man! All of my great and mighty works are here, absolutely sublime!

Lastly, you'll be supporting me, I need those royalty checks to keep rolling in!

Buy it if you love me or just buy it if you want people to think that you're sophisticated (the chicks also dig it, I should know: Antonie Brentano, giggity!), you can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars Don't underestimate those "unknown" Operettas!!.......2005-07-07

This is, as far as I know - the only way of buying the "official" recordings of "The Grand Duke" and "Utopia" - which seem to be otherwise out of print!! Several of the others are not that easy to get either.

In any case - most people getting this set will already have the Mikado, and very probably Pirates and Pinafore for that matter, so you're really getting it for the others.

So just for the record - someone has to say this!

The Mikado is (of course) a wonderful piece, but it enjoys its long running status as the most successful of all the G&S operettas very largely for "extra-musical" reasons. It is visually so wonderful, with all those great authentic costumes, and the whole idea of satirising English institutions by pretending they are Japanese is of course brilliantly funny.

Again, Pirates and Pinafore enjoy a lot of their acclaim simply because we have heard them so often. And at least part of the initial success of these (admittedly very funny and entertaining) pieces was the vogue for "nautical drama" on the popular Victorian stage.

Iolanthe, Ruddigore, and Yoemen are all MUCH stronger musically than any of what another reviewer here keeps calling the "trilogy". Patience, Princess Ida, and the Gondoliers all excel either "nautical" operetta, at least musically, although not, perhaps, the Mikado. And I have had a lot of fun listening to my recording of the Sorcerer - although I think most at least of the other G&S operettas are even more interesting.

As for "Trial by Jury" it is really another thing altogether - but in its kind the most perfect thing either Gilbert or Sullivan had anything to do with!

This leaves Utopia and the Grand Duke.

Both of these were produced after the long running friendship between G&S had soured, and they have been sadly neglected ever since. Utopia is none the less both musically beautiful and very funny, and well worth taking an effort to come to grips with. The main point of the satire (which many commentators and reviewers seem to miss) is the way that the English language and British (especially English) institutions were being adopted, often rather uncritically, by countries around the world (most, but not all, of them members of the British Empire, of course). India is perhaps the country Gilbert had most in mind, but you could set it in any of a dozen other countries. The residual problems this has left in the post-colonial world ensure that this work is still far from dated. In some ways this operetta is about globalisation! What could possibly be LESS dated than that!

The Grand Duke, on the other hand, is a bit of an odd man out - I suppose you still have to say it is the weakest of all the G&S efforts. It's the ONLY one that didn't score a very respectable run on its first outing. Surprisingly, however, if an attempt is made to duplicate the musical and (especially) dialogue cuts that G&S would have done themselves if they had not by this time been at each other's throats all the time, a very entertaining piece can be made of it. I was very agreeably surprised by the Ohio Light Opera recording, which does just that - and I am coming round to the idea that the only thing really wrong with the Duke is that it is too long.

ANYWAY:

For all people (especially callow youth) who remain convinced that G&S only wrote three operettas worth listening to - all I can say is, buy this set, and give the lesser known ones a chance. Make sure you have a libretto in your hands as you listen, of course. It may even just need a single hearing in some cases, but otherwise, be patient. In the meantime, you really cannot have any conception of what you are missing.

5 out of 5 stars A few details.......2004-03-28

This 24-CD album consists of 12 plastic cases, each with a thin booklet giving background and plot summaries for the works on its 2 enclosed CD's. Most of the album consists of 15 operettas, 2 of which (Cox and Box, The Zoo) have texts not by Gilbert and 7 of which (The Sorcerer, Princess Ida, The Mikado, Ruddigore, Yeomen of the Guard, Utopia Limited, The Grand Duke) omit most of the spoken dialogue. Before listening to any of these operettas that you don't know well, you'll want to obtain a copy of its text so you can read along and not miss any of the words or the wit.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful set, if a little inconsistent at times........2003-07-07

If you thought that the Sargent set of G&S opera recordings was gargantum enough, then this D'Oyly Carte cycle is even more gargantum. Although it is more expensive (because of the four extra operas that the Sargent cycle did not include), this complete 24-CD set is like a joy to behold. There is a debate as to whether this is better than the Sargent cycle, but I like to think that this is a delight from first disc to last, because of the idiomatic sense of polish that these recordings seem to have, and are given a life that makes them able to breathe well. This is all thanks to Isidore Godfrey and Royston Nash's conducting. I know that the performances may not be entirely consistent (this is evident when you compare the performance and recording quality of Mikado and Pirates with those of Gondoliers and Pinafore), but this is only a matter of personal preference. The 1960s performances were given more sumptuous and well-detailed recordings than the 1970s recordings, made when the performing style was not so fresh. But anyway, I still think that this is definitely a good buy for anyone who loves G&S. Even with the consistency of Sargent's cheaper EMI set, I would still say: do go ahead to invest in the set because of the liveliness and style in this complete G&S cycle that Sargent never (hardly ever) tackles. The only thing is: I would also like to suggest complementing it with the 1957 Decca D'Oyly Carte recordings of Mikado and Pirates, recently released by the Sounds on CD label, so that these recordings can do justice to the enormous spirit of these operas.

Sir Colin Davis has long been considered the world's finest Berlioz conductor, and over the years, Philips has released all of the composer's major works with Davis at the helm. Now, they're all here, in a 24-CD box, and it is an astonishing achievement. This treasure trove consists of the definitive, available readings of Les Troyens, Béatrice et Bénédict, and Benvenuto Cellini; a wonderfully energetic, passionate Roméo et Juliette; a Te Deum which is huge yet clear and not over-the-top for its own sake; Les Nuits d'été with different singers (of varying ranges in different songs), as Berlioz wanted them performed; the young Dame Janet Baker superb in Herminie and La Mort de Cléopatre; a relaxed, sweet Enfance du Christ; a Requiem which could knock you over; a Damnation de Faust which is both lyrical and exciting; a performance of Lélio which almost makes sense of that strange work; a Symphonie Fantastiquewith atmosphere and thrills; along with 7 overtures, 5 songs, and more. In addition to the moderate price, the packaging is such that the 24 CDs takes up less space than just the earlier releases of Cellini and Troyens together. This is one-stop shopping at its best. --Robert Levine

        Amazon.com essential recording

Otto Klemperer's Beethoven is one of the towering achievements in the history of recordings. By today's standards, these performances are hopelessly old-fashioned: dark, heavy, and frequently very slow. But they are also the grandest, most unsentimental, most purposeful versions in the catalog. In addition, the relatively slow tempos (only in the fast movements--the slow ones are pretty swift) and forward wind balance permits more detail to be heard than in most original-instrument performances. At budget price and with a fantastic disc of overtures thrown in for good measure, this is greatness incarnate. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable and Utterly Compelling.......2001-03-02

This Klemperer set belongs in the most exalted company imaginable. In these symphonies and overtures, you find that the entire spectrum of human emotions that Beethoven conjured forth have been understood and communicated perfectly by a man who was a great humanitarian in his own right. For starters, Klemperer's interpretation of the "Eroica" stands alone, and listening to his take on the funeral march is one of the most mind-blowing listening experiences you'll ever have. The rest of his interpretation of this symphony is absolutely formidable too, because Klemperer always has the most incredible control over not only a movement within a symphony, but that movement's relationship to the whole, and his grip never falters. What surprised me most about this collection though is the humour and sheer joy Klemperer brought to the first, second and eighth symphonies; this is entirely appropriate of course, but it illustrated for me how effortlessly he could move from Beethoven's tragic dimension into the less ostensibly heroic works. This adaptability easily transfers over to produce a compact, coiled and vital fourth, and a "Pastoral" that reveals hidden depths of disquiet as well as its better-known lyricism. The transformation from the menacing storm into the Shepherd's Song is operatic in its dramatic intensity, and I don't know of any better rendition of this beautiful moment.

The primary objection to these interpretations is that the tempos are often too slow, especially those of the fifth and seventh, and above all the finales of those two symphonies. When I first heard them I thought so too; however, once you listen to these renditions in their entirety, you find the finales completely consistent with Klemperer's overall vision of the works as a whole, and suddenly you feel Klemperer has been very faithful to their structural integrity. If you want alternative visions of these symphonies, try Carlos Kleiber, who really races through them at controversially fast tempos, or Karajan (1963 versions), who clocks in somewhere in between.

The ninth is fine and you certainly won't be missing out on anything by sticking with Klemperer here, but I think the recording quality leads to a somewhat diminished finale, and Karajan's 1977 recording and Giulini's on EMI/Seraphim (now available at a super-budget price) are unbeatable. Klemperer is nevertheless one of those giants of twentieth century conducting, whose integrity suffuses every aspect of Beethoven's work to create a unique listening experience. Karajan's 1963 collection is wonderful, also gets me close to what Beethoven was doing, and is probably more consistent overall. Still, there's something awe-inspiring about what Klemperer achieves here that makes Karajan seem bland at times, so that Klemperer has to be my first choice. Check out Klemperer's Brahms as well for more magical listening experiences.

5 out of 5 stars The Supreme Beethoven Symphonies.......2001-02-20

I am an extreme lover of classical music and I know quality of music very very well. When I began looking for a great set of Beethoven Symphonies I was expecting to find only the best. Then I came across 2 great recordings: by Klemperer and Karajan. I wasn't sure at all which would be better the strength and power of Karajan's Beethoven, or the real German qualities of Klemperer's Beethoven. I listened very closely to both, and finally came to a conclusion, KLEMPERER!!! The singers in the Klemperer recording are greater (Christa Ludwig, Hans Hotter, and Birgit Nilson) and plus they give you the complete overtures. THIS IS THE GREATEST BEETHOVEN EDITION OF SYMPHONIES THERE EVER WAS, IS, AND EVER WILL BE!!!!!!!!!!

        4 out of 5 stars Where's the mono?.......2000-04-11

Klemperer is one of the greatest interpreters of Beethoven and his recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra remain some of the best interpretations on disc. So why only 4 stars, you ask? The 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th are all great, as is the 9th, except that the scherzo is a bit slow and the soloists are a bit of an ear-sore. It's the 4th, 5th and 7th in this set that are the problems. Instead of offering the mono versions of these works, which Klemperer performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra, EMI chose to include the later, worse mono versions. The stereo 3rd is nearly as good as the mono, but the 5th and 7th are too slow and too dull. This set is probably worth buying for 1,2,3,4,6,8 and 9, but I would wait until EMI choses to release the mono versions of the 3rd, 5th, and 7th, if they ever do.

        5 out of 5 stars JDFlynn.......2000-03-24

I don't know a lot about classical music, but I do know this -- when it comes to conducting Beethoven with all the sublety of the Grand Canyon, Otto Klemperer is OK! And I don't mean obsessive-kompulsive either, although it sure can sound that way sometimes. Perhaps it had to do with Klemperer's bipolar condition. His mono performances have more vitality in them than nearly all the digitally recorded versions of the past 20 years. You want more details? Just listen to all that knitting going on with the brass and woodwinds. I'll bet ol' Schoenberg used to remind OK about that when the latter sat in on some of Arnold's classes at UCLA/USC. To me, one of the the best things about classical music is when you can simultaneously be awestruck by the composer AND the conductor. Like in recordings with Debussy/Boulez and Mahler/Horenstein. Doesn't happen very often on balance. BTW, Testament's recent release of OK's live performance of Beethoven's 9th, done near the time of the recorded effort included in this set, will knock your socks off, too. I would suggest Klempo-maniacs purchase that one, too.

        5 out of 5 stars A Monumental Achievement.......2000-03-10

I was introduced to Klemperer's recordings several years ago and I must say that it took me a while to appreciate his genius. His recording of the Beethoven Symphonies (along with the Brahms, Schumann, and Mahler Symphonies) is a testimony to one of the greatest conductors who ever lived. Under his baton, Beethoven sounded true and unsentimental. What you hear is pure sound. Some of the highlights that are worth listening for would be: the mysterious opening of the 4th Symphony, the transition from the 3rd to the final movement of the 5th Symphony, the granite-like sonority of the opening of the 7th Symphony and, of course, the heavenly account of the 9th Symphony.

I acquired the complete CD recordings produced by EMI for less than $50 (includes the Fidelio Overtures, and some other music).

And if this is not enough to convince you, get the four Brahms Symphonies, Mahler's 2nd, 4th and 9th, and Bruckner's 6th and 7th. In addition, Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, and Brahms' German Requiem.

This particular c.d is one that will intrest anyone who is a fan of the music from the early 90's. If its the hip hop side of the decade your looking for, Vanilla Ice, M.C Hammer are just some of the names youll find. Not only is this a great c.d for the 'old school' generation, but also included are 90's love songs like, "how do you talk to angel"(Heights), "damn, i wish i was your lover"(sophie b. hawkins) and "Hold on", by Wilson Philips. Alive in the 90's has some great power ballads such as, "can you take me high enough" by damn yankees, and the infamous,"Life is a highway" by Tom Cochrane. Alive in the 90's is a one of a kind, with a ton of great hits packed into 3 discs!
