Best known for their dance-floor hit "Spin Spin Sugar" and cracking 1997 debut, Becoming X, the British trip-hop quartet Sneaker Pimps have delivered a marvelous third album that bristles with inventive, shimmering electronics. Evoking slivers of old Depeche Mode, Killing Joke, Moloko, and Marilyn Manson, the Pimps meld and manipulate samples and snippets into smart trip-pop that hits on every level. Highlights? All of it, but "Sick" has a rudely addictive, airy loop in its upbeat refrain, while "The Fuel" is a Wim Wenders desert movie filtered through the Pimps' trip-hop conscience. With Bloodsport, the Pimps have successfully made their very own groovy alterna-dance-punk masterpiece. --Steffan Chirazi

A successful reinvention of the Sneaker Pimps.......2006-05-06
This CD is, in essence, not from the same band you have heard recorded on the masterful album Becoming X. Having parted ways with Kelli Dayton (now Kelli Ali), their first highly definitive lead singer, the Sneaker Pimps underwent a sort of reinvention. While their initial sound was extremely bass heavy, eerie, and focused less on guitar-range notation, Bloodsport finds itself in a drastically less dark ambience. Rather than the sexy club mystique of old, this CD offers a much more cynical perspective.
This is a rather successful venture: from the outset, songs like "Kiro TV" and "Small Town Witch" are driving and powerful, with enough traces of trip hop left to feed your hunger for some dance grooves. Where their original moody dance sound has become less prevalent, however, it has been replaced by tinges of alternative rock and post-grunge, especially in the case of songs like "Sick". This is a daunting change for the Sneaker Pimps, who were so capable in their previous trip hop ambience. But it seems to have worked, because the album is quite coherent and cohesive, rarely if ever falling into tangential realms of sound past or future.
There are what I consider to be a couple of weak points in the songs "Black Sheep" and "The Fuel", however, which may simply be because they represent the unsuccessful return to the slow mood of the Sneaker Pimps' older material. In this setting, especially through Chris Corner's voice, the songs become dryly emotional in such a way as to bore to death. Say what you will about the raw emotion brought by Corner's voice, but electronic tracks such as these are unjustifiably slow and moody without any emotional return to the listener. One feels a certain blandness rather than the sympathy that ought to be desired. The lyrics add to the dead-ballad feel, succeeding elsewhere in the album but in these songs falling flat on their faces.
But in spite of these small failings, this is a good album. Those who loved Kelli Ali's bubblegum stylings with the Sneaker Pimps and the dark, rich trip hop feel she brought the band will probably be disappointed, but this band deserves better than to have those expectations imposed upon a wholly different lineup. Look at this recording as coming from a separate artist and it will be much easier to enjoy, and ultimately quite worth the time.
Third time's the charm.......2005-07-25
The Sneaker Pimps will probably never write another song as good as "6 Underground", the mod-rock hit from their 1996 debut BECOMING X. But aside from that track and a few others, the album itself was fairly lackluster. The followup, 1999's SPLINTER, wasn't even released Stateside. Boldly jettisoning lead singer Kelli Dayton shortly before releasing SPLINTER was seen as a bad move by most of the music press, not to mention the fans. For a while it seemed like the band were destined to be a one-hit wonder.
Whether the shift in group dynamic was the catalyst needed to spark the creative burst of BLOODSPORT isn't known, but what's clear is that the Sneaker Pimps have improved immeasurably in terms of songwriting. The tunes on BLOODSPORT are everything BECOMING X's album tracks weren't: fully fleshed-out pop songs with hook, melody, and weight. The whole album is solid from start to finish, but highlights include "Sick", "Loretta Young Silks", "Small Town Witch", and the moody electro title track. Vocalist Chris Corner's world-weary rasp is a perfect fit for these downtempo numbers, and though Dayton had more charisma, Corner is the ultimately the right voice for these songs.
BLOODSPORT is a terrific about-face from a band once in the gutter. Pick it up and savor the sound of inspiration renewed.
sucks.......2005-07-21
The guy singer sucks and Kelli is way too talented for them anyways; she belongs solo. You can't replace a girl singer w/ a guy and keep fans!
A great mix of chill and upbeat music.......2005-07-04
I first heard of the Sneaker Pimps when "Loretta Young Silks" was played on a TV show and instantly loved the song... it starts out pretty slow and calm and then erupts into a loud, more intense chorus with amazing lyrics to boot. And it's not even the best song on the album. It's very easy to get stuck on "Kiro TV", "Sick", and the aforementioned track (all very catchy and amazing songs) and subsequently ignore the rest of the album; I'd strongly advise against it, because the other tracks are where the band's genius really shines. "Fuel", "Bloodsport", and "Think Harder" are more electronic-y sounding songs, whereas "Blue Movie" and "Small Town Witch" are more haunting, slower tracks with amazing beats. The music is impeccable, and the lyrics are mindblowing... my most favorite lyric of the whole album definitely comes off of "Think Harder": "You asked me how to kill your headache: use a gun." Pretty clever. Guaranteed to please.
Ditto on "Kelli who?".......2005-06-16
I had mixed feelings when I bought and listened to Sneaker Pimps' first album - "Becoming X". After listening to "Bloodsport", I realized what the problem was - the songs were great but the singing sucked! Kelli sounds like a small child and her voice did not have the level of maturity required to sing those dark, moody songs. After hearing Chris' mature and "intelligent" voice, the situation was completely rectified. I haven't heard their second album "Splinter" yet, but I think I can safely say I will probably like it now that I know Chris also sings on it. My only confusion is why Chris didn't sing in the first place - he has a great voice and I would love to hear "Becoming X" redone with his voice.
As far as the album "Bloodsport" itself, if you like this type of music - pseudo-electronic, moody, Depeche Modey - there is absolutely no reason you shouldn't like this album. The songs have unusual yet catchy vocal melodies and lyrics, and the music is just superb.

Bloodsport Review.......2006-10-22
If you like the movie Bloodsport then you'll like the soundtrack. The music is digital and instrumental and very fun to listen to. If you know the movie well then you'll know what scene each song is from. The music has feel to it and can influence you. All of the songs are good, especially the songs "On My Own Alone" and "Fight to Survive" which are sung songs.
Worst Soundtrack Ever?.......2005-06-24
My girlfriend ebay'd this cd one time and e-mailed it to me for a laugh. We've always enjoyed watching this film on the weekends when we are extremely drunk and have already watched LaBamba. The soundtrack has always left a scathing mark on my mental well-being, true cheese synthesized straight from the 80's. How can you not shed a tear when poor Jean-Claude has to sit alone on that bus in Toyko, thinking about his disabled, alcoholic friend, to the beat of "On My Own." I know Jean-Claude was crying on the inside.
I think if I ever bought this CD, it would only be for pure amusement, and shock-value. Like buying the first season of Veronica's Closet or keeping your first kidney stone in a mason jar. Nonetheless, the soundtrack did capture the essence of this film from the 80's, so all is well.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.......2004-11-02
Awesome soundtrack, if you're seeking a great work out album and you're tired of Rocky or whatever rap or rock you've been listening then you must definately check this! Course it's out of print so good luck in finding it! Why oh why isn't this available! It's a shoulda been classic! As good as Enter the Dragon if not better.
I LOVE BUSH.......2004-06-30
I was at the Kumite in '76, which was held in the back alley's of hong kong and i have seen the so called film Blood Sport... i must say bloodsport was better than the real thing, especially the musical performances of on Steve Bush and Michael Bishop. My God, there is not a day that goes by that i don't run around in my PJ's and pretend 2 fbi agents are chasing me while i sing "steal the night"
The greatest soundtrack in movie history.......2004-06-30
WOOWWW!! This is probably the greatest collection of songs I've ever heard since Off the Wall. OH MY GOD!!! Stan Bush and Michael Bishop are demigods. If this is not the greatest soundtrack to have ever been released I don't know what is. I LOVE THIS ALBUM WITH ALL MY HEART. Jean Claude Van Damme is the greatest actor of the late eighties, early nineties. FIGHT TO SURVIVE BABY!!! WOOHOOOO.
