A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06
Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D
Good overview.......2007-04-18
Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.
Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08
I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!
Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02
Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.
Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04
The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.
Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.
Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.
This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.
If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

Great for rebuilding your collection.......2004-12-18
I originally found this CD when I was looking for songs that I had lost back in my old college days (especially the old 12" platters). Here is an excellent mix of songs. The songs that made me buy the CD are the obvious "roller skating" songs, but even the songs that got less airplay are notable. I highly recommend this one along with volume 3.
Solid Ol' Skool w/ Several Rarities..........2000-07-22
...it has the Dazz/Mo Bounce/Cutie Pie ubiquity I spoke of earlier, but I can excuse that Because it also has the rarities "Sun Is Here" by Sun, "Riding High" by Ohio Players protoges Faze-O and "Firecracker" by Mass Production. Thems definitely phonkay.

Customer Reviews:
More rockin' obscurity from the mid 60s.......2007-06-30
The second volume of the Back From the Grave series isn't as mind-bendingly awesome as the first, but it still offers up enough grease-coated garagey goodness to make it a superb listen for any fan of good ol' fashioned rock 'n' roll. Sure, there's nothing here to match the power of "They Can't Hurt Me" or "Rats' Revenge" (from the first volume), but there are still plenty of earth-quaking rockers aboard: The Botumless Pit's "13 Stories High" is a fire-breathing raver with a breathless vocal, and the Jaguars' "It's Gonna Be Alright" is a low-key R&B grinder. Jerry & The Others go for the jugular on "Don't Cry To Me," a firestorm of drums, guitars, and snotty vocals. The Keggs serve up the ridiculously sloppy "To Find Out," while the Sloths sound utterly primal on "Makin' Love." There's also the Fugitives' "You Can't Blame That on Me," a roaring three chord rocker, while the Humans' sound meaner than mean on the leering "Warning." The Huns are responsible for the awesome "Shakedown," which simmers with barely understated rage. After a while, the collection does begin to sound a bit samey- it's hard to keep up this kind of excitement for 30 songs. Still, the dis is incredibly entertaining, and at times it threatens to rock harder than anything you've ever heard. Enjoy!
"Let's rock on!".......2007-04-04
The second CD of the Back From the Grave series, much like its predesessor, is a sizzling slab of primal, pounding, and propulsive rock n roll insanity, a hyperkinetic disc of idiotic brilliance, courtesy of 30 abso-malutely astounding garage-punk bands. The music is almost all grade A++ material: Jery & the Others' "Don't Cry To Me" outta go down in history as one of the greatest album openers of all time, with its whirlwind of ferocious guitars, sarcastic vocals, and universe-deflating drumwork. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that anyone who thinks that garage rock is nothing but a bunch of juvenile no-talent self indulgance should be forced to listen to this masterpiece 'til he sees things differently. Other works of deranged magic include The Tamrons' "Wild Man," a shotgunning outcast anthem whose guitar riff is a re-apropriation of the theme music from The Twighligt Zone, Sir Wonston & The Commons' "We're Gonna Love," a fuzz-guitar pounder with one of the catchiest hooks ever recorded, and The Sloths' "Makin' Love," one of the wildest, sloppiest songs ever put on tape. And those four don't even begin to grow fingernails long enough to attempt to scratch the surface- this collection also features The Aztex's dance-craze-apocalypse, "I Said Move," as well as the Fugitives' uproriously off-kilter three-chord raver, "You Can't Blame That on Me." And then there's "Dinah Wants Religion," a stomping rambler recorded by the Fabs (the same group of inspired scoundrals whose "That's The Bag I'm In" is a highlight of Grave disc 1), and "13 Stories High," which applies an almost rockabilly riff to a bit of vocal insanity, much to my delight (also, be sure to read the liner notes for the unspeakable awesome story behind what inspired that particular song. You'll want so badly to believe it that you'll wish your I.Q. was lower!). Now, I could keep on harping about the merits of this disc until I turn blue in the fingers, but I think that at this point, you get the picture. Before I go, however, I'd like to turn your attention to The Keggs' "To Find Out," simply one of the weirdest, loudest, primitiveist (pretend that that's a word; it'd really speed things along) garage rock pounders ever waxed. It is, in short, a masterpiece, a shuddering tornado of out-of-tune guitars, drawling vocals, and punkish insanity. Bottom line: If you care at all about garage rock, get this thing, NOW!
Better than the first volume.......2005-06-30
The first volume was great, but this is oddly enough even better, making the series the best there is for raw and primal garage punk. Once again Crypt compiles the best should've-been-a-hit-wonders from their obviously massive library. Unlike many other similar compilations, Crypt doesn't merely throw a bunch of songs together and put it on the market. They seem to go through their collection, and pick only the best garage rock pounders. For bands that were, well, ameteur teens releasing sole 45s on indie labels, they are incredibly catchy. It's a lot better than that "I Got You Babe" dreck that was scaling the charts at the time. Honestly, "You Can't Blame That on Me" and "Wild Man" should've been freaking anthems! Makes me wish rock 'n' roll was as fun as it used to be, kudos to Tim Warren and the other garage-philes on Crypt Records for bringing us only the best.
The Classics.......2004-12-10
Well, I'm giving this album 5 stars because my dad is on it! Check out "Warning" by The Humans. That's my Dad rockin' out on the drums! Who ever said Albion, New York isn't on the map?
-Evan Dumrese
Much Better THan Volume 1.......2002-12-17
I bought both Volume 1 and Volume 2 of the BFTG series as the next logical step in the garage-punk path that starts with the "Nuggets" collection. I find that Volume 2, top to bottom, has much better music than Volume 1--it actually has a number of tunes that could have been legitimate hits given the right kind of promotion, which one can't really say about Volume 1 (with the sole exception of The Lyrics' "They Can't Hurt Me"). Not that accessibility or mass appeal wholly determines musical merit--especially when it comes to mid-60s garage-punk--but, suffice it to say, a catchy riff and a modicum of musical ability help a lot. My favorite cuts on Volume 2 are The Humans' "Warning" and Jerry & The Others' "Don't Cry to Me."

Ok for Ol' Schoo' Listeners.......2007-05-29
Good stuff and nostalgic....however, I wish they would have had the extended version of everything (specifically Royal Cash's Radioactive). Oh well...
On a whole, a good list of stuff for the high side 30-somethings to remember their youth!
In some ways, the best of the worst.......2005-06-05
Anyone familiar with my postings knows that I am an absolute HATER of the high-tech drek and computerized synthesizer-banging garbage that flooded the airwaves and dancefloors as well as assaulting eardrums and good taste in the early 80s. But there are a few good tunes here. Royal Cash's "Radio Activity" was to me the best of this genre because as much as I despise synthesized music, this was a clever, catchy, and funky little tune filled with funny catch-phrases (who that-who that-who that trying to be bad) and comedy routines ("I have an electronic stereo..it has dolby noise reduction..." if you remember the tune from 1983-84, I need not say more). Some decent rap from Whodini is on "5 minutes of Funk" and a little bit of good R&b is on Skyy's "Call Me" and "Walking on Sunshine," but as far as "Shackles on My Feet," "Tour De France," etc. ad nauseum...YECCHH!!! They can keep that!
2 Thumbs Up.......2000-01-05
WOW! What a great CD! Bring back the 80's man! This CD has all of the songs from the earily 80's Break Dancing Era. I enjoyed Radioactivity and Tour De France the most. "Let's Jam, Let's Jam Radioactivity" and "Pal la vue misure, Tour De France Tour De France" (smile). I was a 3rd grade break dancing and pop locking when these songs were released back in 1983. Last, "Shackles" by R.J.'s Latest Arrival was the best break dance song ever written. This is the best CD I have ever purchased that has the 3 most popular break dance and pop locking songs from that time period. This is a must buy and I highly recommend this CD because it contains some of the songs and artist who pioneered Rap and Hip Hop with Electronic Beats, Drum machines, and Mixing and Scratching. "Shackles on my feet, won't let me dance, Shackles on my feet won't let me stand, turn up the music that has a nice beat, Turn it up loud and take these shackles off my feet." Can you see me break dancing I am so happy I finally found these song after years of searching for the lost 12 inch records and CDs(smile and jam with me)?

Music Across the Water.......2003-03-01
This album, part II of the soundtrack of a TV documentary, accompanied by a book of the same title, illustrates the bi-directional influences of Irish and Scottish music on American folk and the return influence of the latter, especially with the advent of recorded music. Twould be unfair to expect a better selection as the music chosen is intended to make the point. We could obviously find many, many other songs, variations on the words and so on but this work is an editors nightmare and a master work of its kind.
They could have done better.......2001-09-18
This is a compilation of Irish music - suggesting the profound influence on American music- they could have made better selections

Yet another good road CD........2002-03-29
This is marginally better than the first "I-10 Chronicles," which was pretty good itself. Songs by Grant Lee Phillips, Garrison Starr, Bill and Bonnie Hearne, Amy Correia, John Hammond, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and Jim White stand out. The only drawback is that some of these were previously released. I found "Me and This City" to be the best on the album and quite a good folk song. Like the other, put it in your CD player for a long trip.
Likable sequel to the first I-10 comp.......2001-09-28
As with the prior "I-10" compilation, this disc is an excellent collection of tunes that tell interesting stories and generally capture the spirit of traveling across the USA out on the open road. It has more of a consistently country-rock feel than volume one, especially the Flying Burrito flavored version of "The Window Up Above" by Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen. Still, there are also seasonings of Tex-Mex, Southern gospel, old fashioned rock 'n' roll, and other good stuff. Like the first CD, I was more intrigued by the artists less familiar to me, particularly Garrison Starr. (Sad that her last CD is out of print.) I also like certain clever touches such as the way Steve Forbert's cover of a Dylan song ("Watchin' the River Flow") is followed by Ms. Starr covering a Forbert song ("It Isn't Gonna Be That Way"). All in all, it's a thoroughly enjoyable collection, and I'll be looking forward to volume three!
