Tarkan has enjoyed a Ricky Martin-style popularity in Turkey since the release of his second album, Aacayipsin, in 1994--it sold 2 million copies in Turkey and Europe and foreshadowed a string of outrageously successful albums. His 1997 release, Ölürüm Sana ("I Would Die for You"), sold 2 million copies in Turkey alone, 1.5 million being preorders. So it's no surprise that this 28-year-old star with hunky good looks opens his latest CD with the sound of a smoochy kiss on "Simarik" ("Spoilt"), one of Tarkan's most recognizable singles in Turkey. It's a killer tune, too, soaked with the heavy beats needed to keep bodies moving on the dance floor while the landsliding violins of rai build emotional tension. There are several magnetic dance tunes here, mostly collected from his earlier albums, with "Bu Gece" ("Break Free") and "Sikidim" ("Dirty Dancing") among the strongest and most popular. What's intriguing is that Tarkan is not just another pretty face; he was classically trained in Istanbul and penned most of the album's songs. Add the notion of challenging traditional Islamic values with such lyrics as "Don't dance so sexy / Oh, the way you move, you drive me crazy" or "Come on, let's make love / Close your eyes," and you've got the sort of national sensation that parents might hate but the kids will love. --Karen K. 4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous man, great voice, appealing music! .......2006-01-10

This is an album that is among a dozen or so "travelling CD's" we use on roadtrips throughout the Minnesota/Lake Superior region. It gradually washed over me and I began to associate it with these fun times and places. Over time, I began to appreciate more its musical merits.

The songs are alternately high energy and more somber/intense. The middle eastern vibe is definitely appealing, and with closer listening I have come to consider them less superficial than this genre usually is, given some very good instrumentation and interesting vocal turns by Tarkan. He really has a wondeful voice once you become accustomed to the overall feel of the music.

The ballads are quite lovely and achieve some depth. Tarkan's voice has a rough edge, but in a good way that really gets under your skin.

Highly recommended, if you want to try something new and different, and will give it a chance. And there is no denying Tarkan's sensastional sexy looks add to the experience. I also recommend his videos!

5 out of 5 stars perfect........2006-01-08

how to describe tarkan's music? one word comes to mind: juicy. (it describes him as well... mmm...) this is just the best pop you can get. sexy, exciting, exhilarating. and smart too, as others have commented - the guy knows how to write music and how to use his pipes. whenever i listen to this album, i get a great big smile on my face and attempt to sing along with every song, even though i don't know a word of turkish.

4 out of 5 stars Dance Music--Turkish Style!.......2006-01-03

I don't speak Turkish, but I think the music on this cd is simply hot. Initially, I bought it for its very Middle Eastern first track, Simarik, but quickly fell in love with the other tracks too. There is a great variety to the music on here, from traditional Middle Eastern pop to Western-style dance tracks. But Tarkan's lyrical delivery is outstanding regardless of the musical style, ranging from playful to urgent and passionate to sheer sensual.

Well worth every penny you spend on the purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Turkish George Michael! ( in a good way).......2005-09-21

I got this album for 'Simarik', and find I love the rest of the album Almost as well. It's a great party/driving cd, and was a real eye-opener for me in terms of popular turkish music. Very rock, and nice to include the lyrics as well.

5 out of 5 stars Upcoming English album!.......2005-08-09

Tarkan's English album is going to be out very soon in Europe and hopefully in the USA as well!!! Watch out, he's gonna rooockkk the wooorldd!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing!.......2007-06-15

He sounds like Justin Timberlake in this CD rather than his personal style. I agree with much that has been written here and I tend to think that this CD was catered for US charts. I'm not impressed with it and I also think his voice sounds much better in his native tongue of Turkish. This english CD sounds like it's going to be his only one. It's not bad but it's NOT Tarkan. If you're expecting a CD like Karma or Dudu this is nothing like them.

5 out of 5 stars Tarkan is cooler than Tarzan!.......2007-05-13

Oh man, I fell in love with Tarkan in 3 hours. Buy this Cd. I'm not even Turkish and I'm in love with his songs! I'd say his Turkish albums are better... His turkish songs are more natural. His "Come Closer" album sounds like it's been waaaay aimed to succeed in the American music industry. Nonetheeless, this album is a MUST for Tarkan fans. :D

2 out of 5 stars Not a lot of flava.......2006-12-28

I agree with Ay from New Jersey. I, too, am a huge fan of Tarkan, and was looking forward to this album. For me it turned out to be a bit of a bust. Here and there we get glimpses of his Turkish genius, but for the most part, "Come Closer" sounds like every other R&B Lite album out there. I was expecting a much more creative blend of East and West. It is unfortunate that the Pussycat Dolls' "Buttons" has more impact than much of the material on this album. It almost seems as if Tarkan were writing music to cater to "American" tastes, rather than writing from the heart. If this is the case, then Tarkan, be true to yourself. Your fans love your creativity.

4 out of 5 stars I was closer before.......2006-11-15

This is a great CD if you take issue with listening to music recorded in a language not native to your own. Judging by Tarkan's already outrageous popularity, that really doesn't seem to be a problem. Therefore, if you are ALREADY a Tarkan fan you will not be over the moon with this CD. His Turkish language CD's are far surperior to this one and I think that's because he has tried to "tone down" the middle eastern flavor of his previous music in order to appeal to a more "main stream" (i.e. AMERICAN) audience. To those who are fond of a more "Western", less "ethnic" sound to their pop music, then you will love this CD. It's very dancey, it's well mixed, and Tarkan's voice is smoothe and silky as ever. I like the CD enough to give it 4 stars, but give me "Dudu" any day!

1 out of 5 stars Tarkan is SO much better than this..........2006-11-12

OK, this is horrible. As a Turkish-American, I have been listening to Tarkan since I was about 16 (I am 30 now) and I absolutely adore his music. I was SO looking forward to this album- we have been saying that Americans would LOVE his style. This album, however, does not show his style and that "je ne sais quoi" that makes him a Euro-mega star. It sounds like a poor imitation of Britany Spears, N'Sync or Spice Girls circa 1999. Actually, I believe that some of his stuff resembles Wham from the early 80s, and again, not a flattering, fun Wham but a sad, poor imitation Wham. This album is the pits- American Customers, PLEASE oh PLEASE don't buy this, but please do buy "Kuzu Kuzu" or "Sikidim" or one of his other, older Turkish albums. Those are fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic music out of this world........2007-01-23

I first bought the Tarkan and Dudu album and LOVED them. Then this one,KARMA, which is full of great unusual fantastic music. I LOVE very single track on this CD and got my relatives Karma for Christmas. Now they are fans, too. What a CD to drive with. I wish Tarkan would get on the TALK SHOW circuit so I could eventually see a USA concert. I'd love it to be in Las Vegas where the majority of the USA can get to. This CD is FULL of beautiful music. Buy it, and enjoy all logjams on the freeway whilst listening. It's music you'll love to listen to over and over. It's out of this world!

5 out of 5 stars English album.......2005-08-09

Long awaited English album is coming to markets in A FEW WEEKS!!!!! Watch out!!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Tarkan CD to date.......2005-06-06

Wow...what can I say...the man has talent! I have the majority of his CDs (still missing the first two and anxiously awaiting the new CD single "Ayrilik Zor" - it is UNBELIEVABLE!!!). For a while I thought Bu Gece from "Tarkan" was my favorite song, but then...I heard Kuzu Kuzu. :::SIGH::: Now THAT is a good song (and if you can get your hands on the CD single..it has the acoustic version that is just as wonderful). I love what he does with his voice during that song. I love Ask (a beautiful love song)...and Hup (you can't help but dance when that is on). Tas is nice...although I must admit..I lean more towards Bir Oluruz Yolunda (another great beat...basically it is Tas reworded for the Turkish Soccer Team for the 2002 World Cup). Sen Baskasin is great...Gitti Gideli is a sad slow song. I could go on and on...basically, song for song...I think this CD is much better than Dudu (though that one has some great moments, I like this one MUCH better)...but that is just me.

As for the LONG awaited English album...well..all we can do is hope. I am hoping he stays a little closer to his own sound (singing in English of course!) and doesnt sell out to the American market. He is so unique...America has NOTHING like him now (and quite frankly...hasn't had for a VERY long time)...the man can sing and write beautiful music...he definitely can dance :::sigh:::...and he has an appeal like no other.

UPDATE!!!! As the writer above me stated...the LONG wait is over...the English CD is coming :D I heard it was only a single (a total of 4 songs..but I could be wrong)...but let me tell you, I heard 3 of the tracks..and they are INCREDIBLE (and that is putting it mildly!!!). He did not sell out in any way shape or form. They are very Tarkan-like...very sensual, a great beat, with a Middle Eastern influence. All I can say is...I AM SO EXCITED FOR HIM. He is on the verge of something that could potentially be HUGE.

I also read that there is a new Turkish CD coming out in the fall...could it outdo Karma (which is my favorite Tarkan CD to date)? Well...I guess we will have to wait and see...but if it is anything like the English songs...Tarkan fans are in for a real treat! :)

5 out of 5 stars TURKISH DELIGHT!.......2005-04-05

Definately westernized, modern, belly-rolling, hip-swiveling, sexy, musical rhythms worth recognition in the U.S! No quick flash in the pan pop-star, he's not compared to the "King" (Elvis) for nothing. If you like modern pop/rock music try it with a twist of belly-dancing beats, turkish-techno, and a sultry turkish accent. I played this album recently at a party. It wasn't until everyone stopped dancing to it that people began to realize it was in a forgein langauge. It's amazing to share something like this with people from across the globe in a forgein land. No matter if you can't understand a word, good music is a universal langauge.

5 out of 5 stars Tarkan is an amazing talented artiste!.......2003-10-27

I just returned from Turkey and have been crazy about all things Turkish since. I wasn't really into Middle-Eastern type music initially, but in Turkey, you get somewhat immersed in the culture. I grew to like the music there and of course it's Tarkan's music that got me. At first it's the irresistible and wonderful Dudu, which I bought and love the album. I listened to it non-stop for weeks, considering there weren't that many tracks in that album. I then decided to buy Karma and boy, this is one amazing album. It has the oriental Turkish elements which I crave for, and electronica sounds that I have always dug. It's another addiction like Dudu, I will be listening to this album repeatedly a long time from now. Tarkan is simply amazing, like Turkey. Love Turkey!

5 out of 5 stars His best, ever!.......2006-06-26

A bit of history, first. Tarkan was born in Germany and moved to Turkey at 16. He attended a Turkish classical music conservatory and proceeded to splash onto the Turkish pop music scene in the early '90s. Because of his German background, you'll always hear some European influence in his music. This is probably what naysayers are referring to when they claim that his music is not a reflection of Turkish music. Pshaw! Every Turkish pop artist out there has his/her own sound and Tarkan is no different in that respect. Where he is different is in his sound. There's a vocal purity that doesn't come around very often in pop music and his technique is flawless. Again, not very common. Some of his best songs are written (co-written?) by Sezen Aksu, who is herself probably the most popular female pop artist in Turkey. She is credited with 2 of the songs on this cd. "Hepsi senin, mi?" (Translation: Is it all yours?), for example. This sexy song is an instant dance hit and believe me, you will dance! Check out his other CDs, although, this one's my favorite. "Olurum Sana" and "Karma" are a very close 2nd and 3rd. His most recent release is in English, titled "Come closer". I recommend starting with his latest Turkish CDs (Aacayipsin, Olurum Sana, Karma, and Dudu) then going back to listen to his very first album, "Yine Sensiz". It's fun to go back and listen to his sound as it was just developing. You can't go wrong no matter which CD you choose!

P.S.: A great website for all things Turkish (especially music) is www.tulumba.com
P.P.S.: For a great intro to Sezen Aksu check out her "Gulumse" CD from way back when. It was so popular when first released that one of the songs was used as the theme song for a political campaign!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Tarkan album to date . . ........2001-02-06

"Aacayipsin" is without a doubt my favorite Tarkan album to date (pending the release of his new album this spring). This album is not nearly as pop as "Olurum Sana" (also called "Tarkan" in Europe). The music is not as good for the radio or to dance to, but in my opinion it is more beatiful. My favorite tracks on the CD are 04. "Bekle" ("Wait"), 07. "Unutmamali" ("Musn't Forget"), 09. "Durum Beter" ("The Situation's Worse"), and 10. "Gitme" ("Don't Go"). Just like other reviewers have said, even if you don't speak Turkish (which I do not) you can totally understand what Tarkan is saying just by how he sings it, he has so much passion. The US definately needs to open it's mind (and it's airways) to the sounds of Tarkan and other international musicians.

1 out of 5 stars piece of foam.......2000-04-20

Tracks on this CD are very easily consumable. Two kisses the first song sounds very catchy but I don' t think it' s music. I don' t think he'd have a chance in the US or the UK music markets.

5 out of 5 stars Tarkan's music is really great , i love him!.......1999-11-06

I think that Tarkan's cd is really great. It seems to have very much thought put into the music. Unfortunately, I don't speak too much Turk, so I can't quite comment on the lyrics, but I do think that the music, in itself, is just spectacular and really catchy. This cd deserves to be internationally known, or at least more popular in America. In fact, I think that Tarkan deserves to be more known in the U.S. because I'm sick of being the only person in my city who listens to, not just this cd, but Tarkan's music in general. To be truthful, I don't have a specific favorite song on this cd because they're all good. I'm being honest too. I just adore his voice, and he really shows what a good voice he has on this cd. Thank you. Good bye.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD even if you don't speak Turkish!.......2003-04-21

Hi! I love this CD! I saw Tarkan first on the World Music Awards (along with Modern Talking from Germany, who are equally as great!) and I fell in love with him!

Tarkan-Sexy man, great music! My favorite song on his "Tarkan" album would have to be "Bu Gece"..such a danceable track, very strong and meaningful! Of course "Simarik" is a classic, since everyone is trying to duplicate it! I wish I could recommend this to EVERYONE!!

5 out of 5 stars Language is no barrier.......2000-09-04

I first heard bits of this awesome cd at the home of a Turkish friend a few years ago. In December, I again listened to parts at a music store, remembered the music, but failed to buy the cd. This summer, I went to Mexico, and after forgetting about Tarkan for 6 months, I heard both Simarik and Bu Gece on a radio station in southern Mexico. I finally had to buy the cd. Language is no barrier when it comes to this music. Every song is captivating, even if you have no idea what the lyrics say. The music and Tarkan's emotional voice provide all you need to make this music a staple in your cd player.

4 out of 5 stars Great Turkish Music.......2000-05-02

The first time i heard this song i was amazed. I was travelling to Honduras and i heard it on a Guatemalan radio station, i liked it a lot. Then i changed the station and heard it again. What i found out later when i changed radio stations over and over was that this song regardless of it's language was loved by people of a different culture and was being played in a spanish speaking country where i'm sure turkish language isn't understood. When i arrived in honduras i found out also that it was a popular song and a hit among the people there. I said to myself" i've got to get this cd no matter how.! " And i did.I got it after bugging my father to buy it. What i don't know is if a sound heard on the song are kisses? Confusing. PEOPLE IF YOU LIKE MUSIC FROM OTHER COUNTRIES YOU HAVE TO GET THIS CD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music, interesting melodies, appealing delivery.......2000-04-18

There is nothing too ethnic for a citizen of the world. Music of Tarkan goes beyond boundaries of nationality, ethnicity or any other concept of that sort. His music brings a feeling of intensified perception of life, increases will to live life like there is no tomorrow, and for me it is extremely fit for a passionate round of belly dance. My personal experience with choreographing belly dances with his music has been absolutely amazing: I have choreographed three in a couple of days. When I feel down, I listen to Tarkan, and I feel better. Quite an interesting cure for seasonal fluctuation of mood - wouldn't you say? All in all, Tarkan's music is interesting, refreshing, passionate, uplifting.

2 out of 5 stars Too "ethnic" but refreshingly different.......2000-04-07

On one hand, Tarkan's Turkish lyrics are a bit too unfamiliar for the Western ear. On the other hand, his breakthrough album is something new and different, refreshingly different.

There's a great deal of variation as well, and the album is well-produced.

Still, only a few of the songs are worth the attention.
