Béla Fleck, the banjo-wizard leader of the fringe-jazz quartet the Flecktones, returns to more-bluegrass-oriented concerns with this 18-song outing, a complement to 1988's Drive and a more-traditional follow-up to 1995's fusion-leaning Tales from the Acoustic Planet. Most of these songs are instrumentals boasting Drive's core group of Sam Bush on mandolin, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Tony Rice on guitar, Jerry Douglas on Dobro, and bassist Mark Schatz; they're augmented in spots by fine guest players such as Vassar Clements, John Hartford, and the incomparable banjo pioneer Earl Scruggs. Fleck's spidery, tasteful plucking style lends originals like "Major Honker" and "Katmandu" an ever-so-slightly offbeat air, while he gives classics like Scruggs's "Foggy Mountain Special" and "Polka on the Banjo" traditional readings that wouldn't be out of place at the Opry. I love this CD, i think it is one of the best bluegrass collections Bela has produced, with a host of different styles and artists.

A Rarity..........2006-07-19

It's rare when a sequel exceeds the original. This album, though, exceeds the first "Acoustic Planet" effort by Fleck.

Why? Well, the playing is better technically, if you can believe that. And the energy and drive is stronger here than in Acoustic Planet 1.

You also get treated to a greater number of original compositions on this CD. I've come to appreciate this dimension of Fleck's artistic gifts even more as time has passed. While he does do a lot of variations on derivative music, his original compositions are memorable, too.

I've had this album for two years now and it still sometimes makes my hair stand on end when I listen to it and I don't even consider myself a SERIOUS bluegrass fan. Absolutely amazing!

Bela Fleck is arguably the premeir banjo player in the world and he does not disappoint on this CD. His music and that of the musicians he has gathered to play with him is superb. If your feet aren't tapping to the music in short order, then you probably have a few disconnnected nerves leading to them.

If you enjoy Americana/Bluegrass/Country, then you'll love this CD!

If I could recommend only one CD to anyone, this would be it........2005-11-20

This is the CD that was singlehandedly responsible for revealing my long-hidden love of bluegrass music to me. I can listen to it in any season or mood and at any time of day. Each performer on the CD has moved beyond mastery of his instrument to fusion with it, and the results are incredible to hear. My favorite track on the CD is "Buffalo Nickel," which combines a gorgeous wistful melody with a constantly shifting meter and an undercurrent of satisfaction. Other favorites include the rollicking opening track of "Blue Mountain Hop," the well-titled "When Joy Kills Sorrow," the lullaby favorite "The Over Grown Waltz," the deliciously fast ending track "Major Honker"...well, who am I kidding? The entire CD is amazing. It gets my highest recommendation. Don't waver. Buy it. You'll be glad you did.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a more inventive, perplexing sound than "nortec," the hybrid of Mexican norteno music and techno beats perfected by the Tijuana-based Nortec Collective. The group introduced its sound on 2001's Vol. 1 and further hones the oddball hybrid here. Tijuana Sessions Vol. 3 showcases trippy beats, legit norteno rhythms, and playful vocals. It's an unlikely, sun-kissed soundtrack for late-night/early-morning chill-out sessions. Early tracks "Tijuana Makes Me Happy" and "Funky Tamazula" have an energetic, party-up vibe, and "Don Loope" is a percolating mix of cumbia rhythms and adventurous vocal loops. "Autobanda" even artfully straddles a bossa nova banda groove, and it works. Later on, Vol. 3 lapses into post-party states of trance and slow-dance, creating thoughtful sonic atmospheres that would be at home well outside the Tijuana borders. A Delight!.......2006-06-29

Let me start out this review with two overwhelming generalizations, both of which, of course, have many exceptions. First, I really enjoy electronica music. Second, I don't care for Mexican music. Now, having said this, you can imagine my mixed feelings about reading a review (in the Wall Street Journal, as I recall) about an album of Mexican electronica by Nortec Collective entitled "Tijuana Sessions, Vol 3." The review was quite laudatory. My curiosity was piqued. I couldn't resist ordering the CD.

"Tijuana Sessions, Vol 3" is a delightful CD, without question. It's good listening right from the first spin, and it's one of the most unusual and creative albums I've ever heard. The music is unique; nothing I've heard compares. The musical program is done in techno style and has all sorts of strange sounds against a throbbing bass and drums background, but most of the tracks also have horns, guitars and accordion parts. It's a strange mix. Imagine a good British techno band, but with a heavy reliance on traditional Mexican instruments. Don't think of it as traditional Mexican music, but rather think of it as a distantly related cousin. Good stuff. It's festive and danceable throughout. Fun listening. Humerous. Lyrics are done in both English and Spanish, but the reliance on the lyrics (with one exception) is so small that language presents no barrier to the enjoyment of this wonderful music.

The best track, in my opinion, is the first, "Tengo La Voz." It's simply delightful and a great way to start a disc! Some of the other better tracks include "Autobanda," "Dandy del Sur," "Bar Infierno," "Revu Rockers" and "Tijuana Bass." I burned out on "Tijuana Makes Me Happy" after the third listen and would regard it as the weakest track on the CD. Otherwise, all of the remaining tracks on this 15-song CD are worthy. This is great stuff! Try mixing it in with other types of electronica. Good listening!

A great album.......2006-02-11

I stumbled onto this album at eMusic as I subscribe to it. Thinking what do I have to lose as I hadn't heard anything about Nortec Collective. I was suprised to find quite an excellent album. It's a fusion of big electronic beats with traditional Mexican music. I guess their name Nortec comes from a combination of Norteno (meaning from the North) and techno, which basically is describing the two different musical worlds colliding.

Overall this album is so much fun, upbeat and full of energy. But the energy is sort of laidback rather than giving you the feel of a nightclub. So Tijuana Sessions Vol. 3 has downbeat and chill elements to it as well. It's definitely well worth it buying or downloading it. If you like to experiment and find new music to listen to then this is definitely not to be missed. One of my favorite tracks on the album is Revu Rockers - a bass heavy big beat monster. I absolutely Love it.

Don't get me wrong, this is a good album. But the Tijuana-based DJ collective doesn't live up to the name 'Nortec' (a fusion of norteno and techno) on this 2001 debut. This album felt more like a regular electronica album made by some musicians who just happened to be Mexican. Thankfully, the boys took their time and came back with the downright genius "Tijuana Sessions, Vol. 3", which is far better. Vol. 3 far exceeds this album because you can really hear the norteno influence integrated with the electronica. In sum, skip this record and pick up the new one!

The best tune is missing in this compilation.......2005-02-10

This is almost the same album you can get here in Mexico, only they crippled out "Trip to Ensenada". Get that if you can! It's the climax of this compilation!. Other than that, this album is excellent if you're looking for a new approach to techno. Nortec just doesn't dissapoint too many people, and I believe many of you, readers, that have visited our country will find something familiar in its sounds. De México para el mundo.

What a disappointment.......2002-03-16

From the reviews here I was expecting something different: Electronic-Techno music, yes, but I was hoping it would be mixed with something recognisably Mexican to give some originality and local input. I should say from the outset that I am not usually a fan of techno music but I was excited by the prospect of a techno/mexican fusion. Such fusions can offer something genuinely new and quite distinct. For instance, I wasn't a huge fan of hip/hop until I heard it being mixed with Mexican music by Delinquent Habits or with Senegalese music by Djoloff. A spark was formed. This Nortec stuff contains nothing very Mexican- no local guitar or trumpet rifts and, this being techno, there was not even any Spanish or Native American singing. These would have offered something which would have set this apart from an electronic sound which could just as easily have come from Berlin. Overall what this collection offers is just another assortment of bland and dehumanised electronic music. No one will remember this album in 5 years time. If you like techno you might like this. If you don't usually like techno don't bother with this because it is NOT an original take on the genre. If you are interested in modern takes on Mexican music check out Cafe Tacuba, Los de abajo, Maldita Vecindad or Control Machete. But these might not always appeal to techno fans....

i bought this after hearing it once on KROQ radio station and ihavent been sorry. be open to different beats moves and grooves if you want to enjoy it...its good to know that our southern neighbors enjoy modern hip hop and can hybrid it with mexican cantina music....good stuff

A Master's Piece.......2007-03-23

POWERFUL! ... TOP NOTCH ARRANGEMENTS! ... In this album, you get a truly masterful performance from Cachao and company. In this offering he is surrounded by a roster of talent that has only been equaled twice before in the very rich history of latin music. Those other recordings are as follows; 1. "Estrellas Areito vol. 1 - 4", Areito label and 2. Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nueyorquino vol. 1 - 2", Salsoul label. To say that it is the among the very best Cuban music EVER recorded is truly an understatement, from the opening track to the very last one, what one gets is Afro-cuban music played with a pure passion and love. It is obvious just by listening that the musicians in this album played with their hearts exposed. I was not present at the recording but i know that the head charts and arrangements were used only to begin each session. It is physically impossible to write and then have each member play the music contained in this recording. An improvisers paradise. It is very rare for musicians to find themselves in a setting where all of their emotions flow with electrically charged passion as with this album. As a collector of Cuban music, I have heard most of what has been recorded. This ranks among the very best of them all (...and there are 1000's of excellent records of Cuban music). If you are just discovering Cuban music, this is a perfect place to begin exploring. For those already baptized, GET THIS ONE!

Essential latin music.......2005-02-26

This CD should be in the collection of every latin music lover. It should be a required study material for those who want to make salsa. No, it's not salsa but rather father mambo, mother guajirra, aunt descarga, and grandma rumba.
The musician lineup is spectacular including Jimmy Bosch(trombone) and Nestor Torres(flute). And all of these under the man who created mambo and descarga. Cachao masterfully utilizes the skills of these experts to redo some of his old songs, and perform new ones.
Unfortunately the complexities in the music can only be heard in a high end sound system, so don't buy this CD to listen to it while you drive to your favorite latin club, unless you own a Benz. Another detail that makes it different is that the songs flow for as long as they must rather than be rushed to the four minute industry standard.
For those who are only aquainted with modern latin music, expect the same instrumentation as Salsa, but with a more classical feel where vocals come second to the instruments. After listening to this CD you will be able to dissect most Salsa and further understand where it falls stylistically.

The quality of the sound and the magical expertise of some of the best musicians from Cuba come together in this album.
This is what we call "the real thing"... as real and as good as it can possibly be...
This is definitely a must have album for anyone, like me, who treasures the tropical music of the Caribbean and Latin America.
I also recommend the Volume II of the Master Sessions just as highly. These are some of the best collector's CD's money can buy...
If it was possible, I would give it six stars out of five!

this is my third copy bougth on this ALBUM and the music is still frech, like taken out of the island for the first time, even tought i have not been there, Cachao's music takes you there by the sounds and the rithm. i always gonna be a fan and continue to hear his music.

a great Latin jazz album.......2002-02-19

First of all, I love the bass. Second of all, I love Latin music and Latin jazz. Well, that means that his album is one of my all time favorites -- it swings! Not only is every track great, the recording is very high quality and will highlight any audiophile system. I have scores of great Latin music, but this is one of the CDs I keep coming back to time after time. Israel Lopez is one of the world's greatest living bass players (his nickname is Cachao) -- I've been meaning to buy volume 2 as well which should be just as good. This one is a winner.

The second of back-to-back solo albums cut in the early '80s, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack: The Legendary Sessions Volume Two (originally released as The Brightest Smile in Town) presents a more balanced mix of vocal and instrumental tracks than its predecessor, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack. While it's fun to hear the great New Orleans pianist romp through "Box Car Boogie" and patiently work his way through the twilight blues of "Pretty Libby," the unexpected treats are the best: a heartsick version of Jimmy Rodgers's "Waiting for a Train;" a Doc Pomus cover, "Average Kind of Guy," that sounds like Randy Newman on a particularly good day; and "Marie La Veau," a highly syncopated bow to one of the Crescent City's many voodoo queens. By the time Rebennack ends Brightest Smile with two gorgeous instrumentals--a lovely take on Harold Arlen's "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Suite Home New Orleans"--you're reminded just how encyclopedic his knowledge of American music is. Boring bar music.......2007-04-12

I bought the CD because I was looking for piano music and this one was highly recommended by reviewers. Well, it sure is one boring piece of work! I somehow missed reference on the music style. So, to you all who may be doing the same mistake: it is a blues music for bars. Go out Friday night and you'll have a great chance to hear the same music: the never-ending stream of notes to make you feel unworried and thirsty. Nothing great nor "legendary" about it really. It has something specifically American about it that I find difficult to relate to: too common, too simple, too simpleminded, too shortcoming. Sorry, but using piano for instrument doesn't make the music great; the melodies could have been played on harmonica or accordion instead and sold as folk-music.

Somewhere in the mid-eighties Dr John released plays Mac Rebennack. Where a lot of the good doctor's studio work was at times plagued by mediocrity that release was suddenly a more than solid effort. Mac Rebennack is of course the Night Tripper himself, doctor John was suddenly playing out of his "own" songbook, although a lot of the compositions here are actually originated from some one else's pen. Plays Mac Rebennack gives you the good Doctor at his most pure, just the man and his rolling and funky piano, his rough and gruff voice and a great assortment of songs and instrumentals. The original release focussed on instrumental work, the vol. 2 companion of the re-release with outtakes from the original sessions focuses more on vocal outings of Dr. John from that time.

Plays Mac Rebennack was a highly intimate late night album; the outtake sessions featured here in vol. 2 are much in the same vein. This is not a bad thing at all, listening to this album one can only conclude that the Doctor is much more powerful and compelling when playing all by his lonesome. The album features a lot of different shades, from uninhibited joy to dark melancholy. With tracks like Marie La Veau some of the Night Trippers mystic creep into this album, Boxcar Boogie is a bar room brawl, Touro Infirmary is a strong adaptation of the familiar st. James, Come Rain or Shine is spine chilling.

Every single selection here is played in the Doctor's signature style, highly indebted to Professor Longhair yet very recognisable as Mac Rebennack. Doctor John has long been one of the most eccentric individuals in Rhythm and Blues; Plays Mac Rebennack shows us he's a master. There's not a note to many, during the record he plays his strengths en weaknesses very well. This release and the re-release of the original album were long overdue.

Enjoyable Dr. John.......2006-08-18

This CD features really good blues piano. Sometimes soft and quiet and at other times quite strident. For me,this is really the way the piano should be in this genre. Dr John's vocals (not on all tracks) adds to the authenticity.

Better than Volume I.......2003-10-10

Usually, when you pick up a CD by Artist X emblazoned with "Volume II," you expect: okay, here are the tunes that weren't good enough to make the first cut, and since the first CD was a success and we've already got these additional tunes in the can, let's make a few more bucks off this deal.

Thankfully, this is far from the truth with Cuban bassist Israel Lopez, a.k.a. 'Cachao,' producer Andy Garcia (yes, *that* Andy Garcia), and executive producer Emilio Estevez, Jr. While I never really connected with Volume I, this 1995 release of Volume II is something I have played over and over and over again. That's really saying something about the quality of Vol. II, since Vol. I was, after all, nothing short of a Grammy award-winning release.

Unluckily, this CD came out right around the same time as almost simultaneous releases from Buena Vista Social Club, Afro-Cuban All-Stars, and pianist Ruben Gonzalez. So Cachao, Vol. II got a little buried in the wave of publicity that accompanied all that. But the good news for the hundreds of thousands - if not millions - of fans of those releases is what a surprise you have waiting for you with Cachao, Master Sessions Vol. II. It's the perfect background music for your next little get-together.

I absolutely love this CD. The rich African beat along with the latin mix make this a mesmerizing experience. I recommend both Volumes 1 and 2. I first heard this music after watching Dance With Me and I had to own both volumes. Thank you Cachao for sharing your special gift.

Cachao, a cuban, was the originaot of what is now known as Salsa. His danzones, mambos, and descargas are known world-wide as being the best of the best. He is also deemed one of the greatest bassists of our time. His music in this album is excellent, especially "Spoon Lips." Well worth every penny sent.

Must-have for today's breaks DJs.......2007-07-08

A great album that covers just about every subgenre of breaks (aside from progressive) while keeping that distinct Stanton Warriors sound. The thing I love most about this album is that, unlike most other compilations, it actually contains full-length, unmixed tracks, and no filler. The Stantons have a style that I appreciate as a DJ: it's all very danceable and energetic, but it straddles the line between mainstream hip-hop/rnb and more underground EDM. This CD is an excellent tool for introducing audiences to EDM (electronic dance music) if (like most American audiences) all they've heard at parties is radio rap. Oh yeah, and this CD is also loaded with killer tracks.

Definitely a must-buy for the breaks DJs out there. I almost bought the individual tracks on my usual digital downloads site, and then I checked Amazon on a hunch. The Amazon price is a lot better than the one at my usual online music retailer, and Amazon actually sends me a CD instead of just giving me .WAV or .MP3 files!

By the early '80s, Dr. John was mostly in demand as a session player and ad jingle writer, but he cut a pair of back-to-back solo piano albums that proved he was still capable of greatness. The first, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack, ranges widely, from joyous tributes ("Memories of Professor Longhair," "Pinetop") and slow blues ("New Island Blues," "Saints") to graceful standards such as "Dance à la Negres" and "Wade in the Water." I was totally delighted with this CD. Every track is beautiful and pure Mac Rebennack blues. It's REALLY the blues for all you blues purists out there that might worry that he threw some gumbo in there. It's that down-home, earthy, grabs your guts kind of blues piano. He doesn't sing much on it which was fine with me but he does sing "Careless Love" and it knocked my socks off. A must have for blues piano-lovers and all blues lovers everywhere.

Dr. John, bring back Mac! If you're a piano lover, a boogie-blues lover, this is fine piano work. I especiallly loved Silent Night, originally written in 3/4 meter, now morphed into 4/4 meter with a boogie beat, and a set of lyrics over which Joseph and Franz would cringe, crackled out in Dr. John's acid voice. Pure, deep-bass boogie patterns interspersed with classic right-hand slides and grace notes and turn-arounds, syncopation that doesn't stop, just keeps movin' on down the road . . .

If you enjoy New Orleans piano (Professor Long Hair, James Booker and Allen Toussant) then this CD is a must have! The good Doc goes smoothly through a nice group of songs, and since he is playing solo on this CD, you can really hear his talent. He only sings twice, so the piano is center stage on this one. All of the New Orleans greats are blended together in one guy. The CD recording and piano are top quality.

2 Good CD's.......2007-01-18

Well Dave has done it again! His other therapy sessions were a little different from this one, he did a best hits of 2006 and some new stuff instead of all new stuff. His CD is very good and has some hard hitting songs! LExicon Avenue surprised me! They are awesome and probably have the best CD out of all the guest DJ's on the therapy sessions! IF you have never bought any of the therapy sessions this is one you can't go without!

My First Impressions of The Therapy Sessions Series.......2006-12-29

Dave Seaman has skyrocketed towards one of my favorite DJ's out there with this Global Underground release GU012: Buenos Aires. That double-disc set is so freaking flawless that it, without a doubt in my mind, rivals Sasha's following Ibiza GU release, and the subsequent John Digweed release, GU014: Hong Kong. That being said, however, this album (on the part of Dave Seaman) was a (partial) disapointment.

Where did he expect to take us with disc 1 (his mix)? Over bubbly and generally flat beats, the variation is just *not there*. Disc 1 seems to be purely audio [...] on Dave's part, and in my opinion is only suitable for driving unwanted guests from a house party (be sure to give your real friends a head's up that the second disc is on its way though! They will be sure to stay.) Listening to that album is like willingly taking the SAT's for fun.

I say this because Lexicon Avenue's following mix CD is one of the best I have heard in a LONG, long time. I just picked up some albums from much more revered artists and I can't stop returning to this relatively new group's offering. Turn up the subwoofers and let the intense ride begin. They mix the album well, the track selection is fantastic, the pace is consistent and varies in all the correct places. Most of all, I find it comforting to find that not only those 'world-famous' DJ's or groups are capable of producing discs which I return to on a habitual basis. Lexicon Avenue is definitely a group whose solo releases I will be diving into without hesitation from here on out. They outdid themselves with their disc 2.

Locate a friend with the album who feels oppositely and buy the Lex disc off him. Although, I will admit, for eighteen bucks I would purchase the double-disc volume just for the second disc, as it could have been a solo release for Lexicon Avenue.

I can't give this album any higher than three stars because of disc 1; if I had to split the rating I've given for the CD as a whole amongst its two halves, however, I'd give Seaman half a star and Lexicon Avenue the rest, hands down.

I did like Therapy Sessions Volume 3. However, in a way, it relates to John Digweed's Fabric release. With Dave's disc, he sticks to candy sounding electronic, like the track that Habersham did and I really like the 3rd track. He tries something different than he usually does too, with some other good tracks. Overall 3/5.

Disc 2 has a lot more house in it. Just like their Nite Life release and their famous track "Dusk Before Dawn", they do a brilliant job. I won't go into all the detail, but I give disc 2 5/5.

Dave has yet to beat the Master(s). Dave rides the bandwagon, but still does an all right job. I still like his other stuff though.

Overall, a good effort for both partners live from Audio Therapy!!!

Seaman rides the band wagon... LEXICON AVENUE STRIKES BACK!!!.......2006-10-20

Initially, I was excited when I learned my favorite production/DJ trio, Lexicon Avenue, were to mix the 2nd disc of TSv3. Then I began to have doubts, fearing they too, might follow long exhausted retro/electro fads and use all of the trendy, 'right' records for their set, this time around the decks.

Suprisingly (not really...), what the Geordie boys delivered is a chuggin, edgey, bicep-flexin' onslaught of housey, groovin, tribal-tech and acid-burned beats. Bradford and Co. augment the tension effortlessly, culling an electronic amalgam of disparate tracks from different genres, which somehow manage to flow together like the innner mechanisms of some complex, well-oiled techno machine.

'Superflyin', by Cubic (Chus & Ceballos/Calderone) is a funky thrust of mean, driving, techno-tribal punishment, while the dark, menacing, sulfuric-etched grooves of Lexicon Avenue's own 'That Acid track', offer a post-progressive take on both a familiar, inimitable production prowess and a nostalgic, revolutionary sound which some (few, actually) are pulling off better than others as of late...

Hands down, this is the hottest and most well executed Lexicon Avenue mix compilation to date and offers a fresh, seamless, bangin' set of tracks. The cummulative vibe is one complete synchronicity: DJ's and producers at the top of their game and thoroughly enjoying and improvising every moment of the trip - "THIS-IS-WHY-YOU'RE-HERE!"

Regrettably, Dave Seaman's mix stumbles and falters by comparison. The mix begins with promise, however, featuring dub-tech dirtiness by Habersham, Kupon and Stelios. Unfortunately, by track 6, the mix is suddenly ambushed by the obnoxious, electro, high-end annoyance that is Freeform Five's remix of more electro/retro/disco flotsam. And then the mix continues to implode further into an emotionless, abrasive soundscape, reminiscent of unpleasant dental work...

Pick up this comp for the Lexicon mix alone and then listen to how the vibe and beat of progessive house is used as a weapon of 'bass' destruction by New Castle's wickedest...
