Product Description
Phutureprimitive is the refreshing musical creation of Oregon-based DJ/Producer, Rain. The Phutureprimitive sound is subterranean electronic tribalism, combining elements of organic downtempo, ethnic breaks, and sensual atmospherics. Ethereal vocals soar over dubbed-out basslines, and live percussion unfolds over odd time signatures creating a groove that is influenced by the synthetic textures of psychedelic trance as well as the kinetic grooves of world music. Rain developed a love for electronic music early on, and began to hone his DJ skills in 1992, inspired by the early trance and goa releases of labels like Eye Q, Dragonfly, and T.I.P. The psychedelic textures embedded in the music of this era continue to be an influence on his production and style.

Not content to just spin music, Rain established the Phutureprimitive Sound Labs in 1996, and began to acquire the equipment and skills required to express himself musically. Expanding and enhancing the Phutureprimitive aesthetic, Leroy Espiricueta has joined Rain, bringing his talent as a musician and skills as a percussionist to the Labs. The haunting and sensual vocals of Alyssa Palmer also grace several songs on this album. The sonic primitives are working on music together, and exploring the creative process independently. Something deep and tribal has been growing in the Labs, unseen and unheard, until now. The first full-length experience from Phutureprimitive is ‘Sub Conscious' - welcome and right at home, at the headquarters of downtempo and ambient dub - Waveform Records. A cinematic journey through Sub Conscious sound. Vibration for the imagination. Turn the lights down low - let your mind and body flow. ‘Sub Conscious' by Phutureprimitive - another important transmission from Waveform Records.

5 out of 5 stars Dark tribal electronica.......2006-10-30

I don't understand why there is only one release by Phutureprimitive. This entire Tribal Ambient Dub CD is excellent music to kick back and get lost in. I love the Ambient Dub genre and this music by Phutureprimitive has just enough of its own unique sound to let you know that it's not just more of the same of other simular artists.

However, if you don't have a lot of music like this, than it can seem to become too repetitious and become tiresome rather quickly if you let yourself play this CD too much. Even I don't care to sit through the entire playback of just the one CD. But, I have determined that this music from Phutureprimitive should be played within a mix of other Ambient Dub and other various glitch and IDM related electronica. To just play these 9 songs over and over, end to end, can get dull quickly. But if you listen to these songs mixed in with about another hundred IDM instrumentals than you will truly appreciate Phutureprimitive's participation in the overall bigger picture of today's electronic instrumentals.

I have this Phutureprimitive CD shuffling amongst others in my 200 CD carrousel. These tracks by Phutureprimitive are being mixed up with tracks by Autechre, Gescom, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Pete Namlook, Biosphere, The Orb, The Higher Intelligence Agency, Sounds From the Ground, Electric Skychurch, Plaid, Boards of Canada, and various other similar artists of which Phutureprimitive belongs with.

I also have these songs and other IDM and Ambient Dub tracks burned onto ATRAC CDR's that is made through the SonicStage program made available only by Sony. (Check out some of Sony's ATRAC CD players and find out why burning hours of your favorite tunes onto a single CDR is better than just loading an ipod with mp3s) Burning hard copies is definitely better than just floating your music in a temporary storage unit like an ipod. (You can make 32 hour CDR's, and as many as you want from all your CD's and mp3s. How many songs can your single ipod hold?)

Anyway, Kudos to you for discovering this Phutureprimitive CD, but now, explore some of the other artists I've mentioned above. You will love this new world of sound that you've discovered. It is more vast than you could ever imagine.

5 out of 5 stars Comfort in the Darkness.......2006-05-01

An addicting album that in my opinion only has 1 flaw... It's too short!

Sub Conscious is a journey through ambient trance and it does a damn good job if I say so myself. Phutureprimitive did an excellant job of using tribal drums and instruments and mixing them with modern day dance beats. Also you'll notice the vocals are from his female "sidekick" which also brings life to the album (usually these types of CDs end up using sampled vocals).

A must have for serious ambient trance fans.

5 out of 5 stars You must order this CD!!!.......2005-12-18

This album is a MASTERPIECE, an absolute must! Phutureprimitive has managed to create a stunningly sensual, complex, deeply psychedelic tribal downtempo sound. Deep, dark, soulful, sensitive, sharp-toothed, hypnotic and compellingly easy to listen to hundreds of times! Killer production and great vocals that just grip me, and rip me to shreds. A friend discovered this CD, fell in love with it, and she asked me if I could suggest anything "as good as Phutureprimitive". My brain froze, and I went completely blank trying to think of anything as good. Ott, Shpongle, and Shulman are comparable in production skills, but for pure listening pleasure there is not yet anything quite as good Phutureprimitive!

5 out of 5 stars A Sonic Masterpiece - Amazing!.......2005-11-01

I found this group via internet radio (Sama FM) Groovesalad. I have listened to this cd a number of times and to be honest, I sometimes have a hard time getting it out of my cd player. The whole album flows nicely and pretty much every song has something to offer. My personal favorites are the tracks 1 and 2. I highly recomend this disk to anyone that likes dark electronic music with deep baselines. The sample songs on amazon dont even come close to what is being offered here. The songs have great build-up and cool layering melodies. If you are the kind of person that has a nice set of headphones or stereo with full range, I am sure you will have a fixed grin and happy ears for quite some time. If you don't your still in for a treat. A word of causion to those that may listen and drink coffee or redbull while driving - may cause speeding and hyper-activity :)

4 out of 5 stars Best Kept Secret --- ONE GROUP TO WATCH OUT FOR!.......2005-10-24

In my search for truly outstanding & well produced music, I look for 5 things.
1. Variety of style
2. Original Instrumentation & Sounds
3. Music other producers listen to for ideas
4. Cinematic Qualities in scale and quality of sound
5. Lots of transitions, swells, breaks and tempo changes

Phuture primitive gets 4 out of 5 stars due to the immense amount of production value and quality and for hitting all of the above points. If the album was 2 songs longer I would have given it 5 stars. What you get here is quality over quantity. The thing is I didn't want this album to ever stop. The journey it took me on and the images it painted in my mind, the movements my body was guided to do all are great and inspiring. This is the kind of music that will draw people out of a crowd when played in public to ask who the artist is. There is clear evidence that the future is bright for Rain the artist/DJ that makes his debut here. He could easily get into film scoring and soundtrack work. Trevor Rabin and Hans Zimmer in their more contemporary scoring feats fit nicely into This Sub-Conscious groove. My favorite albums in these genres are from "YELLO" Who's music is so well produced and laced with amazing instrumentations and catchy grooves. Phuture Primitive would actually catch the ear of Yello because the work is similar in qulity and production value but slower paced and more ambient.

I am truly moved by this album and my quest is to find more like it, sad to say there are few. If you like big, cinematic ambient, downtempo grooves that constantly change, evolve and surprise you with new hooks and SFX this album is destined to please! My only complaint is I enjoy having more of this music than is currentlty available.

Look for more from this artist and let's hope and empower it to be even better, which might be a bit of a challenge! The bar is pretty high here!

3 out of 5 stars It's just okay.......2007-05-02

"Gothic Power" was one of the best, ear-grabbing bit of trailer-only music in the past several years to emerge from the Hans Zimmer-esque electronic-meets-orchestral-meets-choral efforts. Its stunning simplicity provokes a "why didn't I think of that" response in its chord structure. This album is pretty good but the elements present have been much better represented by E.S. Posthumous. I'd also be tempted to suggest Hughes Hall's "Pacifica": While not as orchestral in nature, it's far more original as an easy listening album. I also would've liked to have seen Chris use his own programmed percussive material in "D&A" rather than fall back on the overused "BT: Breakz" sample CD. However, "Sub-Conscious" is a very well mixed and mastered album with near-perfect amounts of space between the strings and the rest of the instruments.

5 out of 5 stars Chill Out with a Great Mix of Electronic Music.......2007-01-04

This is a great album to chill out to. There is a variety of music which appeals to me and shows the talents of the musicians/composers. Sometimes you get an album and every track sounds like the last one - boring! So this album is a great mix and although every track is different they all work well and flow together in a variety of styles from meditative, mello, rock, jazzy, ambient, classical, electronic. My favorites are Floating, Five and Blue. Great background music for working, hanging out, reading, etc...

4 out of 5 stars Office Max.......2006-08-30

All the tracks have a low key, soothing New Age sound, and most have a classical/orchestral flavor. This is a great collection of tunes for the Office or late at night as you drift off to sleep, etc. If you like the New Age works of Chris Spheeris and David Arkenstone, you probably will like this album too....though Spheeris' and Arkenstone's music tends to be a little livelier, which is what I prefer and why I gave Sub-Conscious four stars rather than five.

4 out of 5 stars Well I've only heard one song all the way thru but. . ........2006-04-29

That song is Days and it is freaking great. A touch of Jimmy Page and a huge sound and it make me feel really good. So I'll be back when I've heard the whole thing. Maybe bump it to five. . .
Okay so I'm back after receiving the album and it's good to great. Lyrical, cinematic, he has an extremely good grasp of orchestral form. Eclectic turns from Lesium choral rock to country influenced and all good. "Days" is still the best tune but it's certainly worth checking out all of it. Good Stuff. If I were making a movie I'd want Chris Field taking a run at the sound track for sure.
Go get it.
