5 out of 5 stars Sow into Róisín .......2007-07-09

This album was very difficult to find in the U.S., but after hearing and seeing the video for the brilliant "Sow Into You," I had to get it.

Since then, I can't stop playing it. I love the funky eclectic mix and very organic jazzy-house feel that genius producer Matthew Herbert blends with Róisín Murphy's amazingly fierce soulful, sexy, and sweet vocals. She perfectly straddles the fine line between delectable pop and funky experimentation.

5 out of 5 stars Genius........2007-07-06

Roisin Murphy is the most talented artist of the 21st century. Much more than Bjork, Tori Amos, bla bla.. Roisin is IT. Too bad she hasn't made it as big as she should have. But she has a new album and single due out soon, SO CHECK IT OUT! Overpowered, released July 9.

5 out of 5 stars Less tomfoolery than Moloko, but still experimental.......2007-03-10

I've been listening to this album from time to time since its release and I still enjoy it. Roisin Murphy, along with Alison Goldfrapp, would have to be one of the most creative and original female artists in the U.K. at the moment.

This album uses instruments in a most beguiling and colourful way. Roisin Murphy seems to think that there is nothing bass and electric guitars can do that a woodwind and brass ensemble can't do! Why use a bass guitar when a baritone saxophone can do the job just as well? Of course, for added colour and unusual sounds, one just can't beat keyboard synthesizers, sequencers and drum computers and these modern instruments play their part on Ms Murphy's album, too.

The styles of music on this album could be described in various terms; "Trip-Hop", "Lounge", "Experimental Pop", etc. However, I think it would be fair to say that Roisin Murphy has largely "done her own thing" here and approached each song in an individualistic way.

I think that Roisin Murphy is capable of great things and I think that she can and should easily better this album, soon. However, "Ruby Blue" is a fascinating album jam-packed with songs which suggest all sorts of future musical directions.

4 out of 5 stars pop cd.......2007-01-14

sounds good with a good stereo.

There are some nice bass tones in there.

5 out of 5 stars So you think you can sing?.......2006-09-11

I was watching "So You Think You Can Dance" with my wife and we caught a cool song called "Ramalama (Bang Bang)". My ears are going so we had captioning on, which tells you the artist and song. I quickly jotted down the name and went looking online for the song and album.

Wow, what a great find this turned out to be. I've done two straight-through listens in addition to a few shuffle-plays with other songs, and I've finally figured out all the tastes I'm hearing.

It's Bjork and Aphex Twin with classic AM radio female vocals a la Carly Simon, with some inevitable Kate Bush/ Tori Amos splashed in. Ultimately, you have and have not heard anything like this album. The ingredients, yes, but the dish? All its own, and it works very well. Enjoyable and quirky, and I think because I'm going through a jazz phase now, it resonates deeper within me than if I were to bne traveling through, say, my death metal or Hendrix phases.

Worth picking up, for sure, but maybe a note of caution for more conservative listeners, it's something to give a dedicated ear to appreciate.

These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! 5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must For Lovers of Music and History.......2001-01-20

This album contains the best works of George Gershwin, played by the very best artists of the period. The quality of the recording is excellent, actually amazing considering that this recording was made in 1937. The music of the master, George Gershwin, and the authenticity of the playing is more than enough reason to buy the CD set. But there is more: The album consists of the complete two and one half hour historic radio program, broadcast as the announcer says "by short wave to the four corners of the earth." It is so moving that you can feel like you are experiencing it live. The 16 pages of liner notes that come with CD set have been carefully researched for historical accuracy and competent critical evaluation of the music. One could have wished the producers would have found room on the cover of the CD set to list Charles Previn, who conducted Concerto in F, which accounted for approximately thirty minutes of the playing time and for Nathaniel Shilkret and Nathaniel Finston who, as conductors, were the featured artists for another approximate half hour of playing time. One could only wish that there were only such minor complaints with all musical recordings. The producers deserve thanks for making this wonderful piece of history available to the public.

4 out of 5 stars A real collector's item, especially for old-time radio buffs.......2000-09-24

This recording preserves, for all posterity and in quite listenable sound for its time, one of the most important and moving cultural events of the early twentieth century--the full-length memorial tribute to George Gershwin, the USA's greatest composer ever,IMHO.

This was broadcast on CBS Radio in September,1937, barely two months after the composer's shocking and untimely death from a brain tumor at the age of thirty-eight. All of his most famous pieces for concert hall are heard here, and the advantage of hearing them in a live performance is that they are not edited, as they often would have been in recordings made during that era. (Gershwin's own recording of the "Rhapsody in Blue",made in the 1920's in a recording studio,is rather severely cut.)

Many of the performers, such as Fred Astaire and Oscar Levant, give memorable performances, but there are a few clinkers. The great German conductor Otto Klemperer may be brilliant in Beethoven and Bach, but he was not the man to conduct Gershwin's Second Prelude, heard here in an orchestral arrangement. He has no feel for jazz idioms whatsoever, and he makes this slow, blues-like piece sound like a dirge out of Mahler or Bruckner. It is,sad to say, the worst performance of the Prelude I have ever heard. And whatever possessed the producers of this concert to get Lily Pons, with her pronounced French accent,to sing "Summertime", rather than an American soprano, which they could have gotten easily? It throws the whole "Porgy and Bess" segment out of whack.

That "Porgy" segment, however, is one of the most valuable historical documents ever recorded. It presents members of the original 1935 cast of the opera performing unedited versions of several arias, duets and ensemble pieces from the opera, conducted by Alexander Smallens, the original conductor. And it presents perhaps the only surviving recording of Ruby Elzy, the original Serena, singing "My Man's Gone Now". (Miss Elzy was NOT featured on the so-called Broadway cast album; Anne Brown, the original Bess, sang Serena's music on that one,as well as singing Bess and Clara's arias.) And we finally get to hear Todd Duncan perform "The Buzzard Song", which was cut from the opera for a very long time.

Fred Astaire's spoken tribute to Gershwin is very moving, and at one point, his voice is heard cracking with emotion. The announcer and narrator, however, speaks in that overenunciated, dramatic, actorish style which was apparently the norm for radio announcers of that period. He sounds as if he were getting ready to either impersonate Orson Welles, or audition for "Hamlet", and his style of speaking is almost quaint nowadays.

But this album is still irreplaceable.

An update to this review - This edition of the memorial concert is apparently out of print, and the concert itself has been reissued as part of the ongoing CD series "The Radio Years". DO NOT BUY THAT VERSION. It is vastly inferior to this one. This version has spectacular sound for its time, and the new reissue sounds as if had been recorded through a tin can. And not only is the sound bad on the reissue, but there is tons of surface noise and the program itself seems to be abridged.

We can only hope that the edition listed on this page will be re-issued some day. This historic concert deserves no less.

Album Description

Debut solo album from Irish songstress Roisin Murphy, frontwoman of Moloko. All the tracks on the album are the results of Roisin's collaboration with producer Matthew Herbert a musician and producer famed for working predominantly in the field of electronic music. Songs on Ruby Blue are all over the map - each song fuses elements of jazz, late 70's/early 80's soul, rock, and electronica, with varying emphasis on each between tracks. Echo. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-12-23

This debut album by Murphy, former lead chanteuse for the indie/electronic band Moloko, is amazing.

Murphy's sound, while similar to Moloko, departs somewhat from electronica and moves closer to dance/R&B. The amazing title track (featured on "Grey's Anatomy") is a funky rave-up that puts Prince to shame. Murphy's cool-as-ice vocals here just make the song crackle.

There are several other great tracks, including "If We're In Love" and "Leaving The City". It would be an almost perfect work, but the last few songs, while interesting and experimental, are sort of at odds with the rest of the CD. However, don't let that scare you away. I'd really strongly recommend taking a listen.

3 out of 5 stars You're my ruby blue.......2005-08-16

You know her best as the eccentric pop voice in Moloko, that wacky dancepop group that turned out some of the U.K.'s best electronica. Alas, after 2003's "Statues," Moloko is no more. But lead vocalist Roisin Murphy is just beginning... her solo career, that is.

Don't expect Moloko's experimental pop, however. In "Ruby Blue," Murphy tries out some entirely new sounds such as jazz, low-key trip-hop and funky piano-pop, with a slightly psychedelic quirky edge. Sometimes it suits her unique vocals, and sometimes not -- more often than not, the wild little songs work out just fine.

"Ruby Blue" slinks into our ears with "Leaving the City," a jumbled pop melody full of tinny percussion and subtle horns. Murphy sings in a dreamy manner over the quirky arrangements. This gives a feel for what the album's sound is going to be like: It's not like her past work, but not like anything else either, really.

After that comes a string of unusual dancepop -- rather than your usual electronica, there's a funky, jazzy, slightly insane edge to Murphy's music. Yes, there's some keyboard on there, yet songs like the wild "Night of the Dancing Flame" or the fiery, bouncy "Ramalama (Bang Bang)" rely more on the organic drums and beats.

Not all songs on "Ruby Blue" are that much fun, however. "Through Time," for example, is pretty but rather dull. It's midtempo but very steady and quiet, and so after a while it gets boring to listen to. And the finale is a pretty song, yet somehow doesn't fit in with the rest of the album. What's more, Murphy doesn't sound entirely comfortable over a simple piano ballad.

In fact, Murphy's quirky, breathless vocals work best when she's singing over earthy beats and trippy tunes. When the songs are quirky and wild, she sounds amazing. In the quieter songs, she sounds distinctly out of place, not unlike a country singer trying to rap.

Some of the songs lag a bit, or don't fit around Roisin Murphy's style. But "Ruby Blue" is an entertaining (if uneven) solo debut. Lots of fun.

I can say only one thing: They are the BOMB.
It's like, FINALLY! A teen pop band that isn't cookie-cutter pop! They write most of their own stuff, and what they DO write, is written cleverly. The band, as the last reviewer stated, play their own instruments.
Personally my favorite songs are the upbeat "Run Away" and "Through the Rain".
I'm sorta disappointed because on this page there isn't the list of songs...or sound clips...because these girls are great. You seriously get hooked from the fist note. In this world where teen pop comes and goes, mostly not impressing, untalented singers, Rubyblue really stands out. You listen to the first note, and you think, "oh, they sound original," and you listen to the whole song and KABOOM! You are mesmerized.
They are positive role models for teen girls, unlike the image that Britney Spears puts out.

I hope you take a chance on them!

Hey Reggae Fans... This album has AWFULL sound quality, and track 12 on my CD had a big sound gap right in the middle of it! Complete junk. This is a cheap rip-off of another CD called "Jack Ruby Presents The Black Foundation," which is a FANTASTIC album. The other reviewer who gave this knock off a five star rating must have been thinking of the other album instead- an easy mistake, given the nearly identical titles. So, stear clear of this fake rip-off and go for the real thing, "Jack Ruby Presents The Black Foundation."

5 out of 5 stars Jack Ruby delivers.......2002-01-18

The infamous Jack Ruby is a legend in the halls of reggae music. He wasn't as famous as some of his counterparts, Joe Gibbs, Clemont Dodd or even Bunny Lee, but Ruby carved out his own niche and his own sound to stamp the Jamaican music scene of the time.
His protege's include, a young Winston Rodney aka Burning Spear, w/ the classic "Marcus Garvey" and the Big Youth DJ version. Ruby also worked w/ top artists such as Justin Hinds & the Dominoes, Lee Scratch and the Heptones w/ an unreleased version of "African Child" there are also some unknown artists such as The Eagles, and the backing band The Disciples, who are well known musicians. The album is full and rich w/horns and melodic harmonies and a deep roots/Rasta feel. Ruby is also known for his role in the classic film "Rockers" in which he plays himself.
This is a delightful album to have!!

The first time I listened to it, it felt like stars twinkling in my ears. The CD is a mixture of modern and classical music. It reminded me a little bit of Orbital, you know from "The Box" but it also sounded a bit like the minimalistic music of Philip Glass. I loved it!

The music is perfect for a film, a theatreplay or a dance piece.

    Album Description

"Most know Al in a blues context. This recording, Red Breath, celebrates his jazz side - both as a fine cornetist with a tasty, burnished brass sound and as a vocalist. His is a fresh voice, heartfelt and confident in the words he sings. And usually they're his words. His voice is most welcome in a world where male jazz singers seem vastly outnumbered by the women...Basile's cornet sound is as singular as his voice, but rooted in the deep tradition of horn aces Louis Armstrong, Bobby Hackett, Ruby Braff and Harold 'Shorty' Baker...Standards can be a fine reference point for listeners, but too many artists use them as a crutch. Basile avoided that 'tired tune' syndrome by seeking out material by well-known writers that was either unknown or under-known." - Ken Franckling
