After their groundbreaking debut, brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll quickly put trendy tags like "rave," "techno," and "hardcore" behind them. With Orbital 2, the brothers went to great lengths to show that some of their primary interests lie beyond the dance floor, as influences like Miles Davis and Steve Reich crept into the fragmented, floating arrangements. Atmospheric tracks such as "Lush 3-1" and its near relative "Lush 3-2" transcended established electronic formulas by breaking away from regular beat patterns, and they borrowed Opus III vocalist Kirsty to create the catchy, entrancing mesmerizer "Halcyon + On + On." Orbital had come a long way from their breakthrough single "Chime," and by all indications would never go back again. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars The culmination of Orbital's "rave" phase.......2007-06-17

This album is my personal favorite by Orbital, if only because it was still heavily infuenced by their live performances and constant touring in the vibrant rave scene of the early 90's. This is dance music for smart people. There are stomping rave anthems and goofy sonic experimentation. It holds up well after more than 10 years, and that's pretty unusual for a techno band. Some say that Orbital got even better after this one, but I personally think this was the last truly good album that they made.

3 out of 5 stars Not a masterpiece, but contains two great singles........2006-08-29

I can't think of a techno album more over-rated than Orbital 2. It appears in every overview of electronic music. I've never seen a bad review of it. It's supposed to be an all-time classic. But for me, it's a little hard to sit through.

Let's start with the first and last tracks. They don't contain any music. Both of them are short vignettes in which a vocal sample repeats one brief phrase. At the same time, the same sample is repeated at a different speed in the background, so the two voices go out of sync with each other and then line up again.

I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean. Maybe such an idea might suddenly occur to you if you're sitting in a studio with a lot of cool equipment. Or maybe there's a deeper meaning. But I personally find it tedious to listen to. Especially the second time around. I can stand the first track, but the last one just repeats the same idea. Both of these tracks are pretty short. But still, taken together, that's four minutes that could safely be removed from the album without really changing its musical content at all.

So that leaves eight tracks that actually contain music. And some of those are pretty tedious too. Worst of all is a track called "Impact (The Earth Is Burning)" that goes on for over ten minutes. In this time, the band plays one light-funk riff on a keyboard. First the rhythm goes on for a while, then there's a break in the drums and the keyboards come on, and then the drums come back and play together with the keyboards. About halfway through, Orbital try to create some kind of forward movement. So, they sample a brass instrument and play one long note on it. One note, that's it. And then they add a ridiculous sample of a guy yelling, "It's...it's like a cry for survival! For their...survival! And for our...survival! Survival for them and for us!" This is hilarious, because the underlying music has no dramatic power. If anything, it sounds lazy and relaxed.

"Walk Now..." is similar. It starts with a low grinding noise, like a factory in a science-fiction film, and then repeats one phrase on some synthesizers that sound very much off-key. It goes back and forth between these two sounds for seven minutes.

Orbital use the same compositional approach for all of these tracks. They add new layers one at a time, very slowly and deliberately. You can see this in "Monday." First they start the piano loop and wait a while, then they add some drums and wait a while, then they build up the drums a little and wait some more, and so on. The piece builds up to a very pretty, clean melody, then there's a break back to the piano loop, and the song builds back up in almost the same way. This method favours songs that have good melodies and a lot of detail, like "Monday." Sometimes the repetition is effective, like when it's applied to the keyboard line in "Remind." But some tracks on the album don't have that much substance, and they just seem to go on forever.

So that's why I think this album is over-rated and difficult to listen to from beginning to end. But why has it received such acclaim? I think that its reputation rests mostly on the strength of two singles.

In spite of all the bad things I said about this album, there's one obvious fact: "Lush 3-1" is the best single of the nineties. It's not the main keyboard line that carries it, but the opening. The song begins with a triumphant arrangement of short, very fast major-key synthesizer chords. This sound serves as the foundation of the song, and remains in the background until the end. The beat doesn't even appear until a minute or so into the track, and then takes another minute to build up. The opening is protracted in this way to build tension and make the listener anticipate the beat more. It creates a feeling of crazed, intense joy. Actually that was one feeling that Orbital could evoke better than any other techno band.

The other single, and Orbital's most famous work, is "Halcyon + On + On." Here, too, Orbital create a sense of glazed-eyed happiness by manipulating a sample of some airy female vocals. The vocals themselves are not of particularly high quality, but Orbital cut them up, run them backwards, layer them on top of each other, add echo, and so on. The words become indistinguishable, and the song babbles rhythmically in many copies of the same voice. Variations in the echo make the voice sound alternately close and distant. It is a beautiful sound, and the band contributes a strong club beat. Like in "Lush 3-1," the opening is prolonged to magnify the effect of the main melody when it comes in.

The only complaint I have is that this isn't the best version of the song. That would be Orbital's live version, which adds other vocal samples from different songs, plays them against each other, and finally cuts them up in the same way. In that interpretation, the song becomes as maniacally joyful as "Lush 3-1." One recording of this version is available on some pressings of Orbital's later album In Sides.

Aside from these two high points, there's also one very good album track ("Monday") and a couple of others that are at least very listenable ("Planet Of The Shapes," "Remind"). So it's not a bad album, but in my opinion, not a timeless classic either. If you want an album with many good songs, Orbital's own Blue Album is more consistent, although it doesn't have any such perfect singles.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Masterpiece.......2006-05-04

Typicaly im quite harsh on Albums and very very rarely refer to them as masterpieces, especially music from the modern era, but Orbital have greated just that, A masterpiece.
The Brothers from Londons' second offering (thus the name orbital 2) is an epic musical journey consisting of Large electro beats intertwined with melodic textures and some down right disturbing samples.
This album is definatly 10 years ahead of its time. Being released in 1991 is something that is even more remarkable. Considering the technology available at the time, the production and origionality of composition help to make this album one for the ages.
Worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential electronica album.......2005-12-29

This album is so good it's ridiculous. Every song is crafted to perfection with either very interesting musicianship, catchy melodies, or both. The only complaints I could give are the first and last tracks (which aren't really songs) are kind of annoying. If you were to like one electronica album this would probably be it. Every song is good here, but the hit "Halcyon + On + On" is alone worth the purchase of this album (it's EXTREMELY emotional). If you don't like this album then you can't truly like electronica music. A must own.

Highlights include:
everything but the first and last tracks

3 out of 5 stars Orbital, as in round and round on the same old trak.......2005-09-08

The DJ must've been lacking filler on the CD to include the rather monotonous first 3 traks. Sure you get into the vibe as you clik through the traks, but musically, it takes Orbital a long time to morph into progressive takes in the songs. It's like a pounding headache- you can hear the thumps, but can't figure out if it's your head or the track.

Take an aspirin and get some other CD, maybe even a compilation which seems the best route for the genre. At least there are more hits and good traks in a comp and if you find you like certain people, then go after them specifically.

Orbital 2 is one of those disks you should play while in the car with the windows rolled up. People think you are listening to something def from the beat, but you'll know different

5 out of 5 stars hey look, another 5 stars!.......2006-06-16

it's worth it though. this CD is filled with trance/techno music that i have never heard of with exception of a couple of songs. i love all three of the Hacker soundtracks because they all have a variety of great music by some of my favorite artists. go ahead and grab this if it sounds like your cup of tea. it's worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars No ordinary 'inspired by' CD.......2006-05-24

While I usually feel hesitant to purchase 'Inspired by' CDs, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this CD topped the original Hackers CD. The music on this one was as good and even better! I believe none of the songs were actually in the movie, but the music is similar and full of energy and thump.

A great addition to the collection. If you liked this one or the original hackers, you should also look to purchase hackers 3 as it was my favorite of all series.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2005-01-25

If you like electronic music and liked the hackers soundtrack, buy THIS volume. It has a very good selection of music, and not so common tunes from the artists involved. If you are an electronic music fan it's quite possible that you have already many tracks of the first volume. I can't say the same thing about volume two, which in my opinion has a far better selection.

Honestly... buy it NOW. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack - if you like Techno.......2004-04-27

I love techno, so I really got into this Album. The mix is excellent, and it makes great music for a party. But if you don't like hard-core techno like Prodigy, you probably won't enjoy this album. Warning: if you play this in the car, you're likely to drive 15 miles over the speed limit! :)

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite soundtracks.......2003-09-05

"Hackers" may have been a not-so entertaining movie (to me) but the music that went along with the film was and still is awesome. I only have the first two volumes. I like the original soundtrack slightly more but the second volume is quite good. Either way, "Hackers" has some of the hottest techno acts today, from Prodigy to the legendary Orbital. A former roommate owned "Hackers 2" and I immediately fell in love with it. Gotta love the Emirion Mix of Prodigy's "Firestarter". I wasn't big on the original version of "Firestarter" but I thought the Empirion Mix gave the song a much added energy that the original version was lacking. Plus the remix is a lot more danceable than the original version. "Hackers 2" was my first introduction to Brian Transeau (aka BT). The same can be said about Chicane. I just loved Luce Drayton's "To Be Loved" (Disco Citizens R+D Edit). Luce reminds me quite a bit like dance diva Jan Johnston. I wasn't really wild about the intro to Orb's "Toxygene" but once I got passed the samples, I got into the actual song. I just could have lived without the cluttered noises in the beginning. I think Leftfield's "Original" is one of the sexiest songs around thanks in part to Curve's Toni Halliday. "Original" certainly has a trip hoppy element to the song. I wasn't really crazy with the original version of David Bowie's "Little Wonder" however I thought the Danny Saber Dance Mix made the song much more interesting (just like the Empirion Mix of "Firestarter"). I wasn't too big on Scooter's "Fire". It just wasn't one of my favorite songs on the cd. Overall "Hackers 2" certainly is one of my favorite soundtracks that uses today's hottest techno acts around.

This compilation, offered by LA's Urb Magazine, is only deceptively straightforward: it explores the current state of electronica, with dance-floor stalwarts DJ Icey, Uberzone, and Rabbit in the Moon butting heads with neo-pop stars like the Crystal Method, Goldie, and Portishead. One might suspect this to be yet another cash-in "electronica" compilation, a mere licensing scheme intended to separate you from the contents of your wallet. But this ain't no scam: not only is the track selection topnotch and accessible, with an equal dose of well-known hits and underappreciated gems, but the compilation also offers an entertaining education. On disc two, New York's Liquid Todd throws down a set of classics, tracks like Rhythim Is Rhythim's "Strings of Life," Orbital's "Chime," and Dubtribe's "Mother Earth," giving an insight as to what today's electronica stars were hearing whilst in their nappies. As an introduction to the overhyped and confusing world of "electronica," this compilation can't be beat. --Matthew Corwine

4 out of 5 stars Good "past and present" collection........2003-09-08

No collection will ever be perfect, but this does a decent job. The first disc is what's supposed to be hot (in 98). The second is supposed to be some old school classics. Some well known artists are on here like "Prodigy", "Moby", and "Portishead". My favorite thing by far is some of who's sampled on different tracks. Samples from "Bad Brains", "Kate Bush", "The Verve", and the theme from "Twin Peaks". Overall a good comp. The 1st "Urbal Beats" is good too. Pretty much electronica's greatest hits.

4 out of 5 stars This is a pointless review.. for a pointless album.......2001-07-28

First thing about this album that i must mention right off is that the track slection is horrid. If it wasn't trying to be a "definitive guide to electronic music" it probably wouldn't have been so annoying. Really this "urbal beats" series works well if view together, but the track selection seems wrong in the individual sets. This time around the balance is thrown off by adding too much big beats, jungle, and trip hop. Three styles that do come from the same influences. Giving the whole album a lack of diversity. Digital empire 2 does diversity so much better. Another issue is the repetition of the same groups and groups that are seen together all the time.. I mean we have an original prodigy song, a remix of a prodigy song and a song prodigy remixed? is this the "definitve guide to prodigy?" We have a fatboy slim song, and a fat boy slim remix. And the whole first disk breaks down to basically 3 different types of related electronica. giving a very bad "definition" of electronica.

The second disk is a half way decent attempt at mixing alot of classic together, but I am getting somewhat sick of hearing old school electronica thats just doesn't hodl up well over time.

I give the album 4 stars since it does have some decent gems on it. But I highy recomend "digital empire 2" over this compilation if your looking to get schooled on the so called "electronica genre"

3 out of 5 stars A letdown.......2000-06-23

This CD was a big letdown.. it was recommended by the person at the record store, looked good, etc. Basically disc 1 was too jungle for me. There are some tunes that are pretty good, but there are some downright angry-feeling ones as well. Temper-temper gave me a headache and "release YO' Delf"--well, you can figure it.

Disc 2 was much better, but still not enough to compell me to repeat the purchase.

Summary: Disc1 1-2 stars, Disc2 3-4 stars

4 out of 5 stars Disc 2 much better.......2000-06-19

There's another review that sums my sentiments exactly. Disc 1 gets 2-3 stars (kind of like a rap with faster beat) But disc 2 is really good; 5 stars)

4 out of 5 stars Start With The First Volume.......2000-06-01

This set is more uneven than the first Urbal Beats, but it still contains more than a few classics of the genre. The two discs contain a lot of music for a good price--I recommend it as a next step if you like the first volume.

5 out of 5 stars The best thing from Orbital in recent years!.......1999-11-10

Nothing Left surely must be the best thing Orbital have produced since The Box. I was absolutely blown away the first time I heard it. As soon as it starts you just know that Orbital have made another incredible choon. It really is brilliant - I never get bored of it! If you like Orbital or brilliant music you'll love this. Okay, so you might aswell forget about the other 2 tracks (although the Schizoid Man remix is "interesting"). But it is worth it for Nothing Left alone. You will not be dissapointed...

5 out of 5 stars An excellent idea.......2005-06-22

I was very happy when I saw this for the first time, as getting a hold of the Peel Session had been difficult. I won't bother reviewing it, as the others have already done a good job, but I will point out a few things. Only the back omits "Impact" from the tracklisting (the front is still the Brown Album cover with the tracks and their times). Also, this version of Semi-Detached is not the one found on Diversions, although they are similar. The version on Diversions was first found on a compilation called Trance Europe Express. Lastly, Attched, is the version that would later appear on Snivilisation, only shorter (about 8 minutes versus 15) and has a beat throughout(the one on Sniv doesn't as I recall), which makes the song much better, in my opinion. The other two songs are as found on Diversions (only with a track break in the middle, which is nice if you want to skip straight to Walkabout). Get this if you love Orbital, and even if you don't.

        5 out of 5 stars RARE MUST-HAVE CD ALBUM!.......2002-12-12

All I can say is WOW! Not only do you get the fantastic ORBITAL 2 album (or ORBITAL BROWN, depending on where you come from), you also get, as a bonus, the very rare PEEL SESSIONS CD! (PEEL SESSIONS is from the UK in the early nineties, when JOHN PEEL, a BBC Radio 1 broadcaster, used to have new acts perform live on his radio show. The tracks would then be released in a very limited form, for a short time only, on CD and vinyl. Any of the PEEL SESSION CD's and 12"s, no matter who the artist is, are very difficult to find now).

Oh, no doubt some of you die-hard Orbital fans have noticed that on the track listing for the 1st CD the track IMPACT (THE EARTH IS BURNING) is missing from the CD. RELAX! This is simply a typo from the front of the CD (for some reason IMPACT was left out, despite being on the disc). If you turn the CD cover around, the full tracklisting is there. I own this version of the album, and IMPACT is definitely on the CD.

So, to sum up, you get one of ORBITAL's greatest albums, and also a very rare CD featuring four rare tracks that aren't available anywhere else (unless you can find the original ORBITAL: THE PEEL SESSIONS release). At the end of the day, you can't go wrong buying this album. The music is just superb (do you really need to know that when you can see HALCYON + ON + ON in its tracklisting?), not just from the original album but also from the PEEL SESSIONS, making this rare 2CD set easily one of the best (alongside IN-SIDES) ORBITAL albums ever.

5 out of 5 stars Halycon on on.......1999-12-30

This song is the GREATEST. I, personally don't own this CD =)..but I've heard this song before and I thought I'd comment. It's beyond description. It's one of those songs where you want to carry around a diskman with headphones and have it be the soundtrack to your life.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD, a UK release only though........1999-01-13

This CD contains the full Orbital 2 album and the hard-to-find Peel Sessions. Peel Sessions contains 4 songs. A Lush mix, Walk-about, Semi-detached, and Attached from Orbital's Snivilization. This CD is a very good deal and a great buy for Orbital fans.
