Flunk's debut album "For Sleepyheads Only" introduced the US to Norway's stylish synth pop trio of Ulf Nygaard (producer and vocalist), singer Anja Øyen Vister, guitarist Jo Bakke and associated member, drummer Erik Ruud. Their cover of New Order's "Blue Monday" gave them not only critical acclaim but a large following from the track appearing on a slew of stateside releases. Described as "woozy, gauzy, muted, blurry and very groovy", Flunk occupies that unlikely place between folk and electronica. At once organic and studio-tweaked, the Flunk sound layers Björk-like Anja's creamy, dreamy vocals over a hushed base of samples, keys, and softly strummed guitars, creating an ethereal, past-midnight vibe. On Morning Star, they have evolved this sound further creating a pure indie sound with less emphasis on electronica.
In keeping with Flunk's tradition of New Order covers, on Morning Star we are treated to a live studio recording of "True Faith". Morning Star also delivers very strong original material with the title track "Morning Star", as well as "On My Balcony", "Blind My Mind", and "Probably" showcasing the superb songwriting talents of Flunk.

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie Gerber

This Swedish neo-folk sextet is nothing short of astonishing, both vocally and instrumentally. Their use of modal tunings, moody yet feisty acoustic arrangements and dual female close harmony singing evokes recollections of seventies-era folk-rockers from Britain (Pentangle, Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span), France (Malicorne), and Ireland (Clannad). But as decades have elapsed since these bands first appeared, the present group's work would hardly be worthy of interest if it were not also fearlessly, fervently inventive. Although completely acoustic, the mix incorporates everything from light touches of Scandinavian techno to hazily skewed harmonic references to Abba. A dusky nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) abuts plucked strings, a stand-up bass and always, those witchy, sweet-sour voices, telling tales of shifting seasonal duties, lovers true or false, the all-encompassing sea and seemingly conscienceless vagaries of nature and fate. Why Northern European styles have not yet caught on more strongly with Celtic music fans is a complete mystery -- not only do they echo one another in tantalizing ways but, as many Irish ethnomusicologists have already confirmed, are demonstrably related to one another from afar. In any case, listeners jonesing for a latter-day smorgesbord of richly varied, forward-looking authenticity might launch their explorations with this fascinating album. --Christina Roden

The cast also featured Roy Castle as Cosmo Brown, Danielle Carson as Kathy Seldon and Sarah Payne as Lina Lamont. A fantastic ensemble was headed by Joyce Carpenter.
Danielle Carson brings the house down with the 'Valentine Girls' in "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", which replaced "All I Do Is Dream Of You". Ms Carson also gives a lovely treatment of "Would You?".
Tommy Steele proves his showmanship with "You Are My Lucky Star", "Singin' In The Rain", and "Fascinating Rhythm". Roy Castle is great in the comical "Make 'Em Laugh", while Sarah Payne is given time to shine in "Temptation".
Overall a fine recording.

The pristine tones and lilting melodies of the Celtic harp are immediately inviting. Celtic Harpestry, a companion to a PBS performance special, explores a sound both traditional and modern in a tasteful and evocative collection. This isn't a purist's album--half of the harpists aren't even from the Celtic isles, and among the album's old Irish chestnuts is "My Heart Will Go On," the love theme from Titanic. The otherwise-joyful Belfast Harp Orchestra tromp through the James Horner tune, almost pulling some subtlety out of its overwrought themes. Turlough O'Carolan, the blind patron saint of the Celtic harp, might wish he were deaf as well, if he could hear it. But the bard would be thrilled to hear the 12-piece BHO playing the traditional "Brian Boru's Set" or one of founder Janet Harbison's zephyrlike originals. Her "Earth, Water, Wind and Fire" elicits shifting textures and colors that belie their traditional roots. The song also exemplifies the ethereal side of the Celtic harp explored on Celtic Harpestry with artists like Rüdiger Oppermann. Playing a wire-strung harp accompanied by bass and keyboards, the German harpist soars through crystalline melodies whether he's playing traditional tunes or originals. The most traditional sound actually comes from the American players. Cheryl Ann Fulton gives a straight-up rendition of "Breton Medley," and jazz harpist Deborah Henson-Conant is refreshingly restrained, faithfully rendering "Londonderry Aire (Danny Boy)" and "The Minstrel Boy." Although Celtic Harpestry focuses on slow airs, there are robust performances here, including those by Máire Ni Chathasaigh's group and the harp and vocal duo of Sileas. Outside of the Titanic love theme, Celtic Harpestry is an elegantly wrought collection. --John DilibertoAlbum Review:
