Even as dancehall further installs itself as a sellable pop/R&B sound in the U.S., St. Vincent native Kevin Lyttle arrives with a sexy, party-ready variant on soca (soul-calypso). "Turn Me On," the single that ensured this album's release in the States, is a three-years-in-the-making hit that pushes the singer's lithesome voice into an irresistible organic-electronic track (the CD also offers a remix with reggae hard man Spragga Benz and a video for the song). The rest of the album keeps the groove up, making for one of the most likeable, boundary-breaking successes in recent memory; a cover of Terence Trent D'Arby's "Sign Your Name" is a timely reminder of that singer's late-'80s heyday. An even more likely follow-up smash, though, is the bumping "My Lady." Don't be surprised if Lyttle has kicked off a welcome new sound-fad in America, with more soca stars arriving quickly. --Rickey Wright
Product Description
The summer's hottest hit is already here - Kevin Lyttle's sexy, Caribbean sunshine-soaked smash "Turn Me On." The track is already a global phenomenon, Top 5 on virtually every international chart, and now it's exploding at Top 40 radio and MTV in the US. With that success, Kevin has not only established himself as a dynamic new global star, he also is in the vanguard of artists who are emerging from the Caribbean with a range of exciting new musical hybrids poised to follow the surge of dancehall reggae into worldwide prominence. Kevin's fresh and innovative fusion of Caribbean soca music, American hip hop/R&B and Jamaican dancehall was the smash of St. Vincent's yearly Carnival in 2002. Through Kevin's live performances, the song saturated the entire Caribbean, spread to Caribbean communities in North America and the U.K, and eventually reached mainstream clubs and radio across several European countries and Japan. Over a two-year period of mounting popularity, and without any official international release until now, "Turn Me On" has emerged as soca's biggest international crossover hit in 20 years. His self-titled debut album promises to be as groundbreaking and eclectic as his single, teaming Kevin with a slate of top names from the fields of dancehall, hip hop and soca, including Jeremy Harding (Sean Paul, Tanto Metro & Devonte, Beenie Man); Tony Kelly (T.O.K., Sean Paul, Sasha) and Salaam Remi (Nas, Ini Kamoze, Fugees), as well as "Turn Me On" hit collaborator Adrian Bailey.

Will Smith makes a welcome left turn from his recent Hollywood McAction Film past in director Andy Tennant's romantic comedy. He is also the film's executive soundtrack producer, taking the opportunity to pay tribute to the R&B and soul that initially influenced his own musical career, as well as showcase its contemporary echoes. Vintage tracks represent Motown (the Temptations' classic "I Can't Get Next to You") and Philly (The O'Jays "Love Train") soul well, while the Caribbean rhythms of Jimmy Cliff's "You Can Get It," Martha Reeves' "It's Easy to Fall in Love" and Earth, Wind & Fire's pop-inflected "Reasons" testify to the old school's rich diversity. John Legend's new cover of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" doesn't add much to the original, but other new cuts like the hip-hop/soul fusion of Heavy D and the Boyz' "Now That We Found Love," EW&F's collaboration with Kelly Rowland and Sleepy Brown ("This Is How I Feel") and Amerie's funk-charged "I Thing" offer up a tasty modern R&B groove. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Ultra.Dance #06 : MIXED By: The Riddler & Vic Latino [BONUS VIDEO]
Manufacturer: Ultra Records ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B0007QRWVM |
Product Description
This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Vic Latino and The Riddler. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. DJs: Vic Latino; The Riddler. Ultra Records has released several series of club-oriented compilations, but its periodic DANCE offerings have been the most accessible and popular. ULTRA DANCE 06 continues the trend with a double-disc set mixed by DJs Vic Latino and the Riddler, both of whom are veterans of top-rated New York City radio station WKTU. Vic Latino returns from ULTRA DANCE 05, on which he reached particularly far afield for material by mining pop hits from Sarah McLachlan and the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde. Here, however he stays closer to home, featuring primarily dance/R&B-oriented tracks, with the notable exception of a remix of country superstar Wynonna's singing the classic Foreigner power-ballad "I Want to Know What Love Is." The Riddler collects tracks by superstar DJs (Tiesto, David Morales), ubiquitous dance-floor classics familiar to even novice clubgoers ("Born to Be Alive" by the Disco Kings), and exclusive remixes. As a bonus, ULTRA DANCE 06 is enhanced with a sexy music video for Eric Prydz's smash hit, "Call on Me.
