Product Description
German club meisters 'Bass Bumpers' have taken the crazy frog ringtone and merged it seamlessly with Axel F - the tune that uniquely represents 80s movies, the Hollywood dream and Eddie Murphy. Axel F, Harold Faltermeyer's theme tune from Beverley Hills Cop, provides the perfect foil for the 'annoying thing' and is set to have fans hopping on dance floors all across Europe. Axel Frog is the spawn of Reinhard Raith and Wolfgang Boss. Reinhard is one part of the 'Bass Bumpers' - who also produced Angel City, Despina Vandi, VooDoo & Serano, CJ Stone and Resource and are the hottest dance production team in Germany. Wolfgang is the director of Mach 1 Records and has previously worked with Harold Faltermeyer. Gusto Records. 2005.

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10
If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.
Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19
Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.
And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.
I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.
More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30
There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.
It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).
This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.
There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.
Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25
This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.
Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27
This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.
I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.
Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

Great Performance, HORRIBLE Format.......2007-05-01
This would easily have been a 4 or 5 star review, considering the performances on the disc are great. However, the CD is marred by one terrible fact--there are only 2 tracks! That's right, the first track is over 22 minutes long--meaning it encompasses the mini-prelude right past "O mio babbino caro." How on earth could anyone have released the recording on disc like this? Utterly inexcusable.
A shame, too, since Panerai's Schicchi is a comic gem.
Excellent Production in All Ways.......2007-03-31
This opera by Giacomo Puccini is an essential opera for any opera lover to put into his collection. Even the casual opera fan has heard the famous aria, "O mio babbino caro", which I consider to be (along with many others) one of the finest arias ever written.
And that's not to shortchange the opera in toto. It is a wonderful example of the genius of Puccini. It's a short, comic opera that features deceit, death, and false identity, which sounds counterintuitive, but it all does work well, as seeing or listening to the opera will confirm. It's a fun, entertaining romp.
If you see the opera (and you should) the supertitles (if any) will let you follow along with the action. With this CD, the plot is less important than the wonderful singing and excellent production values.
For those less familiar with the story, the CD has liner notes that give a translation of the Italian into English (and other languages).
Highly recommended. The music is engaging and the singing delightful. An excellent value all-around.
How to understand the story?.......2004-04-22
I am a brand new opera fan with lots of musical knowledge but no opera knowledge. I have decided to start with familiarizing myself with the music from "Gianni Schicchi" but where can I acquire a written interpretation of the story so I'll understand it? (In English please). Thankyou.
Highly Recommended.......2000-06-12
This recording sparkles with humor. I still laugh out loud when listening to it. The singers are all well-chosen, and the conducting is first-rate. I particularly like Seiffert's rendition of the mini-aria about Florence. Donath's performance of the famous soprano moment is lovely also, but the true star is of course Panerai, who is perfect in the role of the title character. A splendid performance of a splendid comedy.

A great idea, but incomplete.......2000-10-26
Erich Kunzel plays the Bond themes? What a great idea! In addition, there are a few more selections in the same vein, like the cops-n-robbers TV medley, music from The Untouchables, Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop, etc.
Sometimes, you want to listen to the 007 music in instrumental only, and Kunzel and the Cincinatti Pops do a good job with the arrangements. But where are the rest of the songs? Missing are three of my all-time favorites, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker. I think the album would be better with 'more Bond, less other.' We certainly don't need TWO selections from Dick Tracy. And the theme from Darkman is stylistically quite similar to Dick Tracy; nothing is gained by playing both. Don't get me wrong; I like Danny Elfman (check out his "Beetlejuice" theme on Kunzel's 'Great Fantasy Adventure Album'). I just wanted to hear all my fave Bond pieces on the one CD.
Still, it's a keeper.
Excellent. The best of this style........1999-02-15
All I can say is listen to the Trumpet solo on goldfinger. The best

Soooooo Soul Touching!.......2007-02-07
I heard the song 'Amo' on a fan video for Stargate SG-1, and I just had to get the CD. I am so thankful that I did. Axel's voice touches your soul. It's like he's talking directly to you! This CD is very moving and I recommend it to anyone!
For all romantics out there.......2005-01-14
I bought the CD after I heard the song "Amo" on the radio while I was vacationing in Puerto Rico. I fell in love with it. I have never heard a singer-songwriter with such a passion that it feels like he's talking directly to you.
For such a new artist, at least for me, I find that the production is very competitive. I love the classic singers-songwriters, but Axel is a breath of fresh air. I do find his music inspiring and romantic. And I hope he goes on with te same quality of work that he's displaying with this album.

ANOTHER GREAT ONE FROM AXEL RUDI PELL.......2003-10-20
COMPARISONS ARE ANOYING, BUT JUST FOR THE ONES WHO DONT KNOW AXEL RUDI PELL, I MUST SAY HE IS A STRANGE FUSION BETWEEN THE FEELING OF RITCHIE BLACKMORE AND THE SPEED OF YNGWIE MALMSTEEN.
STILL, THAT BLEND GIVES HIM A SOUND OF HIS OWN.
ANOTHER COOL THING ABOUT MR. PELL IS THAT ALL OF HIS ALBUMS ARE GREAT. BUT "MAGIC" IS ONE OF THE BEST ONES. COOL SONGS, GREAT GUITAR WORK AND AN OUT STANDING VOCALIST LIKE JEFF SCOT SOTO.
THIS IS A CLEAR EXAMPLE OF WHAT PEOPLE MISS WHILE THEY ARE PROGRAMMED BY THE MAINSTREAM TO HEAR CRAPY BANDS LIKE LIMP BIZKIT OR BLINK 18SOMETHING...
GET THIS RECORD... IT ASSURES YOU GREAT GUITAR PLAYING AND AN AMAZING SINGER.
Outstanding melodic metal.......1999-10-21
I've been an ARP covert since I bought "Eternal Prisoner" several years ago. Pell writes classic melodies with memorable hooks, and this album, along with "Between the Walls" and "Oceans of Time" is his best. JSS has a great voice, although I prefer Johnny Gioeli; however, whatever the reviewer below me says, Axel plays guitar beautifully, and within the context of each song. Note the soft texture of his solos on "Eyes of the Lost". Altogether, an excellent album and one I play very frequently. .
Great vocals, great drumming, POOR recording, POOR Guitars.......1999-09-07
This record has some good songs and JS SOTO's voice is excellent, the drumming by Jörg Michaels (from the excellent band stratovarius) is also very good, although the drum sound is horrible thanks to the producer...Axel Rudi Pell...He just can't produce! Everything except the vocals are horrible soundwise. And now to the real horrible part...The guitar solos....THEY SUCK! He play without any feeling and trys to play a lot faster than he can pull of...Hell, I'm even faster and have TONS more feeling thatn this guy! If he had hired a pruducer and a lead guitarist it would have been an Excellent CD.
Neo-classical Progression.......1999-05-17
Axel Rudi pell's gutar playing amazes me, he can easily blend shredding to melodies. The carrier track "Magic" exhibits his technical flexibility. Killer shredding in the 1st track, nicely executed. The music characterizes melodic playing with neo-classical overtones and at times shred. I find the lyrics of the track "The Clown is Dead" quite amusing but then again Scott Soto's vocals blends well. To those new to the genre Axel Rudi Pell is a guitar virtuoso in the vein of neo-classical players. This CD is worth investigating.
Guitar God!.......1999-01-07
Axel Rudy Pell is perhaps the greatest unknown (in the US) metal guitarist today. He plays in the style of Ritchie Blackmore, but harder and faster. A reviewer said Axel "plays like he has only one day left to live", which is not an exaggeration. If you miss the melodic heavy metal of the 80's, or are a Blackmore/Rainbow fan, you owe it to yourself to listen to this disc!
