More moody musical fairytales from Richard Dorfmeister, this time with Rupert Huber under the guise of Tosca. Suzuki is--like his releases with Kruder and Dorfmeister--a sublime work that manipulates emotions through sound. Soft and sweet, subtle and supple, Tosca's tracks drift, sifting from one dream to the next. Though they patch hip-hop, jazz, ambient, and techno together, you can't hear where one begins and the other ends. "Annanas" pairs sneaky, squeaky scratching with a lusty female vocal and bossa-nova-inspired hip-hop breaks, while "Orozco" loops a playful riff, running it through reverbs and filters, creating something like pure bliss for the ears. --Tricia Romano
Product Description
Tosca's second album 'Suzuki' (Studio K7) takes a lighter, airier approach to the trip-hop terrain that Opera explored. The spare, shimmering title track's delicate synth textures, minimal beats, mellow rhythms, and breathy vocal samples set the tone for the rest of the album's laid-back tracks. Though 'Orozco', 'Bass on the Boat,' and 'Ocean Beat' are more immediate variations on Tosca's relaxed sound, for the most part, 'Suzuki' offers a locked groove of hypnotic, deeply chilled-out epics. This CD has 12 tracks and is packaged in a digipak.

Album Description
Simplified features both stripped-down versions of Simply Red's classic songs and fresh recordorm some material with only a piano as accompaniment. "What struck me when I listened back to the performance was just how much the song leapt out at you in those circumstances," he says. Classic Simply Red songs such as "Something Got Me Started," "Sad Old Red," "Smile," and "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye" are reinvigorated thanks to these sophisticated, even jazzy, new arrangements. One of the group's most popular hits, "Holding Back The Years," is beautiful and still lush; recognizable, but with an added timeless maturity. Other songs featured on Simplified include "More," "Your Mirror," "Fairground," and "For Your Babies."
The lead-off track and first single from Simplified is the irresistible, upbeat, and distinctly Latin-flavored "Perfect Love." The Cuban vibe of this sensual new song is amplified by the vocals of Havana-based singer Danae. A Latin feeling runs throughout Simplified, inspired by the band's recent visit to Cuba. In fact, Simply Red is the first English pop band to have played in Havana, as they appeared at the landmark Gran Teatro early in 2005.
Simplified is the follow-up to 2003's highly successful Home, which sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide. That release helped push the band to a level of over 50 million albums sold since forming 21 years ago. Although Simply Red's lineup of musicians has rotated throughout the years, the one constant has been Mick Hucknall, one of the finest male vocalists Britain has ever produced, and also one of its most accomplished, melodic, and prolific pop songwriters.

What A Treat To Have Made This Album.......2007-05-18
Stripped down jazzy slower versions of old songs from The SImply Red catalog. Fans LOVE things like this, I LOVE this album, perfect for a rainy day alone with some songs that are like old friends. But older, wiser, mature, just wonderful. I Simply LOVE the stripped and simplified version of "Fairground", I love the orginial dearly...the sad slow melody over the Goodmen's drumming. But here it is sung as a ballad. This could have been an old standard that someone like Ella Fitzgerlad would have sung. can't say enough good things aabout this album, it is called "Simplified", but should be called "Timeless". This is the Greatest Hits for the fans, hits ethought. Again, rain falling outside makes this even better. Then again, we are all SR fans here, give it a try.
Great!!.......2007-03-26
The music has a variation of sounds and themes extremely diverse and exciting. This is a great CD -a fan can certainly appreciate the voice and themes, a new listener will turn into a fanatic right after this.
Excellent choice.
Wonderful Album.......2007-01-22
If you love Mick Hucknall's voice as much as I do you'll be glad you bought this album. He does some of his old songs in a slightly different way which is so interesting, and the new songs are wonderful. Simply Red is simply great!
Simplified and stripped down.......2006-09-06
Simply Red goes easy listening on this album. Every track is either a re-recording or the original master minus percussion. We hear a piano plus a string ensemble on many of these tracks. This is an ideal album for easy listening music fans, especially senior citizens who can't stand the sound of hard rock or heavy metal. Marty Balin clone Mick Hucknall, the band's frontman gives fans a nice collection of hit songs in subtle form.
Hucknel just doesn't stop.......2006-05-27
Simplified brings some new along with old favorites. Simply Red "smoothed" out old classics. The new material is just as good as the 20 year old tunes. A must for any Simply Red fan. And a cd that new listeners will enjoy.

Excellent Disc.......2007-05-29
I thought this was a fantastic disc. Nice smooth rhythms, great beats and they all seemed to flow one after another like they were meant to be together as a compilation almost. I really enjoyed this disc, it had a great style and tempo. I highly recommend this disc.
tosca take me away.......2007-02-17
they are too amazing. just go ahead and buy all their stuff-- just go. now.
and get all kruder & dorfmeister too. and surf around and listen to other stuff on g-stoned (their label-- the have a site)if you end up getting into them-- it is worth the time. some of the stuff on their label is just ok, but some of the stuff is as good as they are.
seriously talented djs.
no matter what you mostly listen to- you are highly likely to enjoy these guys. they are all encompassing like that.
Buy it.......2005-12-21
Buy this CD...worth every penny and you'll probably be hooked on Tosca and come back for more.
no, but seriously, i love these guys.......2005-09-07
listen, i hate to say this... come on guys please forgive me... but a short while ago i was listening to "honey", which comes on so brilliant and fresh for about 40 seconds and then turns into another tosca song, and i couldn't help thinking 1) god, these guys got the funk (how do they teach austrian school kids to be funky like that?) and 2) why isn't this more than it is?
of course this isn't the K and D Sessions....ok, i don't hold that against them, wouldn't be fair...how could it be? but the sad fact is that - and i don't really want to admit this to even myself - the first tosca album was so fresh and bright and everything since, well...hasn't been. there is no "chocolate elvis" here, no "f**k dub". or on any album since. i like "delhi 9" a lot, well some of it...those cute vocal numbers with anna clementi. but i just think tosca has reverted to maintaining a brand. is it just me, or do these songs all sound the same?
don't get me wrong...i love these guys, always will, anybody who made those incredible K&D things has my respect until the end of time....but that was then & this is now....just kinda makes me sad.
Absolutely perfect.......2005-06-24
There is no single definition for perfectness, however Tosca with this album, achieved a perfection. Whenever I listed to it from the very "Peal In" to the "Pearl Off" I go to another place. The tunes, the beats everything work together. The whole album is a harmony, and I suggest listening to the album as a whole. Many songs stand out, however together I believe the effect is exponential.

Customer Reviews:
this album is blossoming with good music.............2007-06-06
I was introduced to the original cast of FLOWER DRUM SONG, as a small child, on vinyl. For me, some of the songs (written by Rodgers & Hammerstein) made such an impression that I memorized them in record time and sang them to myself quite loudly! It wasn't until later that I came to recognize the themes of intergenerational and intercultural tensions that arise in this story, set in San Francisco's Chinatown. The original cast shines here, with some of the finest jazzy vocals (including Juanita Hall and Pat Suzuki).
We see an example of a more "traditional" woman, just arriving in the United States from China (played by Miyoshi Umeki) and a modernized woman (Pat Suzuki). They both sing songs that reflect their natures ("I Am Going to Like It Here," is sung by the newly-arrived Mei Li and "I Enjoy Being a Girl" is sung by the fiesty Linda Low, who juggles boyfriends like balls in the air). There are also numerous songs reflecting the tensions ("The Other Generation," "Love Look Away") and joys ("Sunday," "You Are Beautiful") experienced by a community of people brought together by culture, yet divided by cultural awareness and experience.
Though, some may criticize FLOWER DRUM SONG for its stereotypical depictions of the "generic" and presumed Asian experience, I found that the musical possesses a lot of heart and the music totally memorable. I can still remember the lyrics to some of the songs--especially, "I Enjoy Being a Girl," which is really an anthem to all women who enjoy being who they are (yes, it is decidedly "anti-feminist" in nature, but it's fun and upbeat). You will enjoy this, too. Pat Suzuki, a legend in the jazz scene, was a great performer and brought such sass and sauciness to her role as Linda Low here, as well as Jack Soo (BARNEY MILLER), who appeared in this musical. Give it a chance and I think you will enjoy it.
A very fine score.......2007-03-29
The first instinct is to lump this with flops like "Allegro" thanks to its trouble-plagued casting and staging; but all things told (not least of which R&H's hospital stays during production) it's a very fine and apt score, with one of their best songs, the ethereal "Love, Look Away", the sort of thing with its slow, swingy rhythm that should have spread to the world of close harmony (i.e., the doo-woppers) but never did. Hammerstein did some of his most ingenious lyric writing, searching out new rhythms and templates. He must also take blame for turning "I Enjoy Being a Girl" into too much the cross of "A Wonderful Guy" and "Honey Bun" (and yes, someone should have instructed Pat Suzuki about her bikini), and one wonders what if anything went through Oscar's head as he wrote the dummy-like list for "Chop Suey": "Harry Truman, Truman Ca-POAT and Dewey....Hear that lovely 'La Paloma'/Lullaby by Perry COMA...." (Listen for yourself -- this is precisely how the great Juanita Hall sings it.) With R&H one member of the partnership almost always pulled the other out of the muck, and however dubious the project (the politically-correct revival underlined that) they almost always found it within them to create haunting and invigorating tunes -- as most certainly here.
Wonderful R & H.......2006-07-24
Even though FDS was not their biggest hit (still a success by the standards of the day), it did not get great reviews (imagine that, compared to so much that has come since.)And there have been many, many shows with music that has barely survived that were bona fide hits. Hum a tune from Two Gentlemen of Verona? Or The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Oh, to have this quality today!
Miyoshi Umeki, Arabella Hong and the OBC.......2004-08-15
FLOWER DRUM SONG is one of the small gems in the canon of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals. The score contains some fabulous numbers, including the well-known "I Enjoy Being a Girl", though there is also the heartbreaking 11 o'clock number "Love, Look Away" (which must surely count as one of the duo's best ballads), and rousing numbers like "Grant Avenue".
Miyoshi Umeki has charm and joy to spare in her performance as Mei-Li, the young woman who enters the United States illegally, in order to submit to a forced marriage. Pat Suzuki plays the brash Linda Low, a sexy nightclub entertainer. The cast also includes Juanita Hall (SOUTH PACIFIC), Arabella Hong, Keye Luke and Larry Blyden. The original Broadway production was directed by Gene Kelly but by all accounts it was choreographer Carol Haney who was the real creative heart of the piece. FLOWER DRUM SONG was a modest success, running 600 performances.
Sparkling cast album from Columbia Broadway Masterworks.......2004-01-26
Another example of how record producer Goddard Lieberson could elevate even so-so material and make it sound like a smash hit. The whole disc sparkles!
FLOWER DRUM SONG was NOT a smash hit. It got respectful though not terribly enthusiastic reviews and played out a successful run. The weakness was the book which borrowed too little of C.Y Lee's novel and is filled with weak (some say offensive) stereotype jokes. Hammerstein had a gem of a concept that is blown away in a few minor scenes...that the traditional immigrant parents want to hold onto tradition, while their americanized offspring want to follow modern local customs.
(FIDDLER ON THE ROOF would explore this theme much more fully.)
Still, the whole show was helped to no small extent by the songs and since that is all there is on the record, it actually makes for a highly enjoyable listen.
Miyoshi Umeki as the shy Mei Li contrasts nicely with brassy Pat Suzuki as nightclub singer Linda Low. There is less contrast between Ed Kenny as Wang Ta and Larry Blyden as Sammy Fong, possibly because the men get less of the score. The supporting cast, however, get a good share of the music: Juanita Hall leads the ensemble in "Chop Suey" and duets with Keye Luke lamenting the attitudes of "The Other Gereneration." Arabella Hong does a beautiful job with "Love Look Away" the show's standout ballad, though her character barely registers in the script. (In the novel, Ta's rejection leads her to suicide. In the musical she just disappears after her big number!)
There is a detailed synopsis in the CD booklet if you want to know how the plot ties all these songs together, but it is one of those cast albums where a synopsis is hardly necessary.
The book is in need of a re-write perhaps using more of the Lee novel as its source. The recent Broadway revival used a totally new story and re-allocated the songs. While the new version has its admirers, it is no more related to this FLOWER DRUM SONG than CRAZY FOR YOU relates to GIRL CRAZY..which is to say hardly at all.
The London cast (now out-of-print, but formerlly on Angel) is less impressive. However the movie sountrack (Decca Broadway) has some tasty new orchestrations and retains all but one song from the stage show, so that CD is worth getting...but start with this original cast disc first.

Dodge the Snobs, THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM.......2006-02-02
Firstly, if I hear another uninformed poseur talk about how this second album of theirs let them down, and oh, dear me, they changed their sound... After People Get Ready, then Electric Sweat, Live & Amplified is their third full length LP, and their fourth release if you include the Self Titled EP.
I don't care about the so-called change in their sound- I got into Suzuki with the, Your Love is a Gentle Whip, single. On that early release their garage sound was completely mechanical, and devoid of the blues/funk that they've evolved into today. They have changed/evolved with each album. Most good bands do.
This is a solid album. It would be a solid first album, and it is a solid third album. Their sound evolved and matured, and I hope it continues to. Yes, it was produced by the Matrix. Did that effect the sound. The producer always does. Primitive Condition, Alive & Amplified and Shake That Bush Again are all really great songs. I hope they made a few bucks licensing the title track to, appropriately enough, Suzuki for the Grand Vitara TV spot where the guy parachutes off the red-rock down to his SUV... You've heard it a dozen times, that's the song.
Alive!.......2005-08-07
A highly anticipated new release from New York garage rockers Mooney Suzuki thrills with peices like the funky, energetic title track, which boasts of drums reminiscent of "Sympathy For The Devil", vocals that sound like the twisted offspring of Ozzy Ozbourne and Jimi Hendrix, as well as with the opening track, "Primitive Condition", which starts with a guitar riff that could easilybe on an AC/DC album. Luckily the sophisticated yet poppy lyrics spare the need to compare the two.
Funkified!.......2005-05-26
I picked this up for free from the record store I work at, not really expecting much but hoping that it was good. And, I was pleasantly surprised! This album provides some damn good hip-shaking funk and deep sexy soul.
The first song is just naughty enough to make me smile, while the title track "Alive & Amplified" is a big energy romp through the highs of life.
I won't go into much detail after that, it's sort of something you need to experience for yourself.
not great, not bad.......2005-04-15
This is a good album, sure it could've been way better if it was recorded with the same production of Electric Sweat with the buzzing guitars and all, but this is not a bad album. Garage rock? nawwww, but good ol' rock n roll? h311s yes.

The Bottom Line.......2004-07-11
From the distorted guitar start of "People Get Ready" to its soulful finish, the Mooney Suzuki proves beyond the shadow of doubt that great American rock still exists. What this album lacks in depth in more than makes up for with attitude. This is roots rock the way it was originally created. After giving this one a listen you can list about 100 bands that they remind you of, yet borrow absolutely nothing. The Mooney Suzuki have a very distinct sound in a somewhat cloned genre. I believe most reviewers are a little too liberal with the 5 star rating, but I feel I can deem this one an "underground" classic.
rock n' roll!.......2003-05-22
in my opinion this album is better than electric sweat... it is more representative of their awesome live show. whenever i need a mooney fix and they're not in town i pop this cd in and it eases my pain. this band is the greatest rock n roll band of recent time, maybe its because they sound so much like the oldtimers. if you like mc5 and no gimmicks rock n roll- buy it!!
Why the Hype?.......2003-04-17
I expected great things from this album after buying the "Your love is a gentle whip" 7". I listened to this album one time and never picked it up again. I don't know why this band is being hyped now, there is better "garage rock" out there, like Supercharger, The No-talents, and Teengenerate. If you are new to the whole garage rock thing go elsewhere.
What's not to like?.......2003-04-06
No, it's not as good as 'Electric Sweat'; yes, it's self-consciously retro, even (dare I say it) kitschy -- but that doesn't stop 'People Get Ready' from working as an exercise in balls-out rock'n'roll that's also a lot of fun. And don't write these guys off as a novelty nostalgia act, either. 'A Song About Today' is one of those absolutely flawless songs that has everything in exactly the right place -- the vocals border on hysterical, the guitars feed back at the right pitch, the bassline drops an octave at exactly the right moment. Best of all, it's exactly what it claims to be: a song about today. Some tracks here are a little weak, but who cares? Not only do these guys pair unpretentious rock (no grunge-era navel gazing or punk-era angst here) with old fashioned rock attitude (as if there were anything wrong with a little showmanship), for the last track they trot out and honest-to-god organ. Point to the Stooges, the MC5, the New York Dolls and even the Flamin' Groovies as primary influences all you want; but that organ is pure Faces.
MOONEY SUZUKI ROCK.......2002-11-06
A good disc by a really good band, but not a great one. If you want to really hear GREAT ROCK N ROLL, go and buy the THE FLAMING SIDEBURNS disc "SAVE ROCK N ROLL"! They played with MS last week and totally blew them away... A much better investment of your money and a MUCH BETTER BAND.
