The fifth installment in Stéphane Pompougnac's wildly popular series, Hôtel Costes 5 dishes up more of the impeccably classy, impossibly cool lounge beats that Pompougnac regularly spins for Jean-Louis Costes and his guests at the famous hotel in Paris. As on all the others in this series, Pompougnac's lithe, fun mix features the good taste, smooth textures, and chic musique that his clientele demands. Pompougnac's DJ ears catch perfect segues others might miss, like the little pieces of Vision's dramatic "Ponger Star" that can be found in the preceding track, "Cocaine Is a Sin" from the Strike Boys. The usual clever touches are present as well, like Fantastic Plastic Machine's wonderfully fey cover of Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out." For those of us not fortunate enough to spend our nights soaking up Parisian luxury after a long day of sashaying down the runway, Pompougnac's records allow for a certain vicarious thrill, though more blue-collar ears will yearn for some dirt. After all, dance music at its core is supposed to be dirty, soaked to the bone with sex and sweat. But while Pompougnac's style may lack blood and guts, it's an awfully pretty skeleton just the same. --Matthew Cooke

FABULOUS.......2007-04-21
This album is so very fabulous - great for parties. The more you listen, the more you'll love it. Reminiscent of early Pompougnac - thankfully!
the best Costes CD since #6.......2007-03-24
With this mix Pompougnac goes back to the roots and re-introduces a richer Paris lounge flair, abandoning the more disco-hipster types of rhythms and themes. This may be in response to an exploding market of global lounge music from the frequent flyer series to the destination lounge sets. The album reestablishes Pompougnac as one of the original godfathers of lounge, his picks and his mixing are unique and impeccable. A great album.
Back on track.......2007-01-28
I have all the Costes series, so I guess I'm in a position to compare. I was quite disappointed with vols 6 & 7, so nearly didn't bother with vol 8, but in the end was glad I did. Vol 9 shows that the series is now securely back on track and I agree with a previous reviewer that this is almost on par with Etage 3. Definately worth a listen if you have enjoyed this series of albums at all.
Some of the best lounge music I've heard!.......2007-01-19
There is only one track I'm not excited about and about six that are among my favorites of all time. (The least favorite track is Emotional Rescue, though my wife loves it. My favorite track is One.) This album is really great, very easy to listen to. It inspired me to pick up other music from Stephane Pompougnac, which is also good, but this one is my favorite.
If you like this type of music, you might also consider albums from Monsieur Claude, or at a distant third, possibly Erotic Lounge or even Bar Grooves.
One of the better ones.......2007-01-11
I have been a fan of the Hotel Costes series since I heard Vol 3. I now have them all. Some are definitely better than others and some (like vol 8) are not really worth listening to.
This one is quite good. It definitely takes about 3 listens before it grows on you. When it does, you will listen for a long time. Check out track 7, it's amazing. Then pay attention to 2, 8 & 11.

Customer Reviews:
Stephane Pompougnac doesn't get any better than this!.......2007-06-18
I have all of his collections by now, and this is the one I keep coming back to. Airy, romantic, urbane, delicious, it always makes me smile. Hotel Costes 9 is also great, and individual selections off of the rest of the series are also excellent. But this is my favorite of them all.
la suite, the best of 7.......2004-09-22
by accident I discovered this cd of Pompougnac, after I heard it, I got really impressed, the style, the music, all really good, then I got all the 7 Costes' series and also the "Living on the Edge" by Stephane Pompougnac wich are so good, but I still think that "la Suite" is the best of all.
If you are looking for a good lounge music, try with it, and become a fan of Hotel Costes
Jazzy, elegant and vibrant mix.......2004-08-01
I'm new to the Costes series. I found out the record looking for some electronic lounge music to add to my collection (which is mostly rock, jazz and latin music). I actually saw good comments on the whole Costes series, but what drove my attention to "la suite" was the addition of "Carnaval de São Vicente" by Cesaria Evora. Honestly, the mix on Carnaval is awesome, but the whole CD has many, many great tracks that will lift you up right from the start. I am not an expert on electronic music, but this is great music, period.
I love the mix of different styles in "la suite", from Jazz Music from German band De-Phazz, to PalaisMascotte from Rollercone, to the great tropical sounds of Carnaval de São Vicente to You're Love from Lovetronic, the album is a very enjoyable experience from begging to end. I can't wait to get my hands on the next CDs in the Costes series!.
Costes la Suite.......2004-06-14
I've rated the CD so I could post a message here. I'm new to the Hotel Costes CD's but heard La Suite the other day in a coffee shop and would like to pick it up. Can someone tell me the difference between Hotel Costes: Suite/Various (IMPORT) and Hotel Costes: Suite/Vol. 2 (IMPORT) (COMPILATION). There is a significant price difference but it looks like all the same tracks, and the first seems to be sold out all of the time. Thanks!
The Series Takes Off!.......2004-05-23
This was a big one for the Costes Franchise. Looking back - wow. It was this sort of release that made it THE compilation for those in the know... well... this and the then underrated Paris Lounge vol 1 released on the same label.
You've got some great artists and mixes! 45 Dip features and there's a sweet remix of Cape Verde's Cesaria Evora's "Carnaval De Sao Vicente". If the bossa beat and taunting guitar in that don't get you dreaming of a sea breeze nothing will short of a trip to the French coast. I'm not much of a Pink Martini fan but this fit in well here. The coup though was adding in Mo' Horizons "Flyin' Away" as it is arguably the best song on their feature album: "Come Touch the Sun". Anyone else would've played it safe and added "Foto Viva". Doris Days "To Ulrike M." remixed by Zero 7 is a good start, masters of lounge De-Phazz pipe in, and before Lincoln used it, Mr. Scruff's re-jazz track "Get a Move On" came on later in the compilation.
HIGHLY recommended. Of all the Costes releases, this one and the third are the ones I play the most, and the ones I find being "borrowed" the most. It isn't without a misstep (I never much cared for Night Over Manaus). But it's hardly enough to say no to this 78 minute compilation. And if you do like the Hotel Costes Series, check Break & Bossa 5&6 and "Get Into the Martini Mood vol 1". Beware though: Costes, Des Pres Cafe and Paris/Berlin/London/New York Lounge are all on the same label. So if you get some look out for crossover cuts.

Album Description
Since Pschent started the Costes series any old half-trendy restaurant has started releasing its 'downtempo' compilation. The covers all show someone on a sofa, the tracklistings all look the same, and the music is just plain boring. With Costes however we try to make sure that they are always fresh, interesting, the packaging is great (check out the inside of Etage 3). Not just another lounge compilation, we hope you'll agree.
Album Description
French dance compilation mixed by Stephane Pompougnac. 15 tracks including, A Reminiscent Drive-'Ambrosia', Shirley Bassey-'Where Do I Begin' (Away Team Mix), Cosmo Sound Club-'Les Chrysanthemes', Stereo Action Unlimited-'Hi-fi' Trumpet' (Boys From Brazil Mix), Coco Steel & Lovebomb-'Yachts' (A Man Called Adam Mix) and Lustral-' Every Time' (A Man Called Adam Balearic Remix). Over 75 minutes of music. Tri-fold paper sleeve.
Album Details
The third great collection in this series showcases some of the best mid-tempo grooves to be heard anywhere from great artists like Dame Shirley Bassey, a Reminiscent Drive, Coco Steel & Love Bomb, Lustral, Nickodemus and more. The music evokes the atmosphere of the Hotel Costes, which is just a minute away from the ultra chic Place Vendome in the heart of Paris. Kurt Loder of MTV and Rolling Stone Magazine calls it a 'lustrous flow of mood and texture' & 'the idealized, virtual lounge'.
Customer Reviews:
Really cool.......2007-01-23
The first costes wasn't so good, but this ones really excellent. One of the best in this genre, i think. The shirley bass track rocks.
Almost as good as Vol. 1.......2005-08-18
Just got this. I still think Vol. 1 is my favorite of this great series.
Dumped a few lame songs from itunes and really like the rest, with a few standouts such as Nickodemus' "Cleopatra In New York", Cujo-Superstars Of Rock's "Apollo (Adam Goldstone Edit)", and Gotan Project's "Last Tango in Paris".
Perfectly cool in Paris..........2005-03-12
Almost as good as his exceptional "Hotel Costes Quatro", Stephane Pompougnac's "Hotel Costes Etage 3" is what that perfectly cool Parisian bar you've been waiting to find will be playing in the background. Brilliantly sequenced, it drifts effortlessly between smooth "chill out" and high quality "electro-jazz" delivering, on the way, some real gems such as Funky Lowlives' "Latazz", Hacienda's "Late Lounge Lover", Cujo/Superstars of Rock's "Apollo", Stephane Pompougnac's own "PNC aux Portes" and The Troublemakers' stunningly funky "Electrorloge". Play it back to back with "Quatro" and luxuriate in two and half hours of quite unforgettable music... and then, as you will, play it all again.
Fantastique!!!.......2004-12-07
I've been listening to the Hotel Costes collection for a couple of years already! I simply love them all!
My first album was "La Suite" (the second in the series); immediately after that one I bought "Costes 1", then came "Costes quatre" and "Costes 5", and a couple of months ago "Costes 6"! I once had the chance to listen to the "Costes 3" collection but I didn't like it then!
I really don't know why I didn't like "Costes 3" then, because a few months ago, I listened it again at a friend's house and I loved it! So I decided to order it (from Amazon)! Now, after a couple of months since I bought it, I must say that I am quite pleased with it. As a matter of fact I like it a lot! Just as with other Costes albums, "Costes 3" is filled with an excellent mix of really cool music!
So, just when I thought that I finally had the whole Costes collection I've seen that there's a new "Costes 7"!...I can't hardly wait to get it!!!
One word : sexy........2004-11-20
I find the H.C. series completely different from other Chillout compilations, Stephane knows how to find sensuality in music, and doesn't mind showcasing it. Etage 3 starts like the rest of Costes' cds, an engaging beat and then goes on to the most soothing music on the planet. Definately worth buying, either for the artwork, the quality, the great possible evenings with that special someone... Highlights: (Where Do I Begin) Love Story [AwayTeam Mix], and 15. Every Time [A Man Called Adam Balearic Remix], simply because they're timeless classics with a twist.

Return to form.......2006-08-02
Best offering from Pompougnac for a while. Bright, flowing urban sounds. After having enjoyed the series to no. 5, I was somewhat disappointed with 6 and very much so with 7. Consequently, I nearly didn't bother with 8, convinced that the rot had set in. But I'm glad I took a chance on this one.
great CD.......2006-07-29
I purchased that Cd while in Paris. All the tunes are wonderful. Highly recommended for that person looking for something different to listen too. Can't wait to get some more of the Hotel Costes remixes.
need some handkerchief .......2006-07-27
We all knew that Costes' spirit faded away about the 4th volume. Anyway we didn't miss unity in other opus. Tracklistings were varied and elegant. #7 lost rang, and #8 make you feel sick.
Tracks by Tosca (good Heidi Bruehl despite it's been compiled in lots of places), Mark Farina and Parov Stelar remain to mythical moments of "La Suite (#2)" and "Etage Trois (#3)".
Mixing is bad and when it's good a pc mixed what the "Dj" could not mix (we are inured to Pompougnac's works) and you can perfectly guess where the cut of a track is.
Brazilian dreadful tunes (Zuco 103), hip hop for old snobs who can't throw their Jazzanova café-music CDs (Smooth) and music for nappy TV ads (Flying Pop's).
What about Hôtel Costes 60?
Outstanding compilation.......2006-05-11
After purchasing costes 6 and 7, I had the idea that he series was heading into the realm of having every second track being skipped on my disk player. Thankfully this is not the case. The album starts off rather hypnotic with 'love machine' making you think you were deep into the night being mesmerised by a cajun beauty in some cajun backwater. the second track has the beat of something that I have never heard before and I recommend you pump this through your 5.1 sound system. here and there volume 8 delves back into into its deep house roots with spectacular effect teasing you with just enough of the deep stuff before launching you back into beat and rough and ready listening. Long may the series last.does not have the elegance of number 4 but certainly a step back in the righr direction. Bravo!
A Vast Improvement.......2006-01-06
For those who've been listening through the years, we know that 6 and 7 were less than what they should have been in light of other compilations out on the market now.
No. 8 on the other hand is one of the best in the series. The beats will soothe you on one hand and want to make you move on the other. Now this is Hotel Costes as it should be.
Also, this is the kind of music I like to play in my car for long long distance driving. It won't make you want to speed too much, but it will make the miles fly by.

Stéphane Pompougnac's Hôtel Costes series gets a boost on its sixth installment, mixing in a bit more grit with the pretty ambience and silky beats. Actually, "grit" isn't quite accurate; Pompougnac's musical choices still lean heavily toward the cool, classy lounge of Jean-Louis Costes' famous Parisian hotel/club. But bits of urban groove and subdued jungle rhythms are present as well. Tosca's druggy "Rolf Royce" (from Delhi9) mines a simple, slap-bass line like a Happy Mondays outtake, while Minus 8 makes a jazzy, beautiful mess out of "Snowblind." Unlike past efforts, Costes 6 gets better as it goes, wrapping with the d&b-meets-French-chanteuse clatter of "Un Monde Sans Frime." Like slightly uncouth, yet good-natured guests, these new Hôtel residents might not be as fashionable, but they're still the best things about the joint. --Matthew Cooke

Customer Reviews:
It's not from here.......2007-06-26
Here in LA this stuff fits but its not from here. Just like everybody that lives here. It's from somewhere else that's a bit of a mystery.
Soulful mix.......2006-12-23
First off, I love all the Hotel Costes collections. The running theme throughout this collection of songs is collective cool. Soulful drifts of music begin with Slow Trains hipnotic "In The Black of Night" that leads into another groove on Stigmato Inc.'s "Rality Check" that is full of jazzy intonations and melodic transcendence. The songs weave together like a world music tapestry, one song flowing into the next to be suddennly transported into a bandeon driven electronic groove as in "Metropolitan." The seemless musical odyssey is a non-stop-after- hours-party-groove.Sometimes it is hard to tell when one songs ends and another begins; only after many listens will you be able to discern where different songs begin and end. Even when Tosca lends its dub tones to the mix it still feels like one continium."Morenita" is a bossa nova induced laid back song that Stephanne Pompougnac does a masterful job bringing to life. The transition songs, as I call them, where the tempo shifts to more downtempo or upbeat is a brilliant bit of cohesive production. Many of the songs feature female vocalists stepping out from behind retro disco like beats that have been modernized, displaying echo and reverb and other effects for the electronica fan. The vocals create a breezy sound that is downright sexy. Rarely do the songs become repititious , with possibly the exception of "The Breeze is Black" where drone like poetic vocals mix with Latin flavored jazz piano. Not quite pure downtempo but driven enough to keep you working hard in the gym this music is not to be missed. Whether dancing, working out or just chillin on a drive this is some cool music you need to brighten your day.
Great Lounge.......2006-11-10
This is a CD that surpassed my expectations. No wierd songs, just easylistening and up-beat song. You wont fall asleep with it.
I have it as a permanent CD in my car.
Great Downtempo / Quality time lounging.......2006-10-08
Takes some time to get under your skin but definitely worth it. Takes you on a high and then drops you a few times but still enjoyable. The best part for me is starts with 'Morenito' and goes crescendo until it culminate with 'Come on'. Absolute fantastic beats that make you want to move your body and soul. I cant wait to go visit the real place in Paris.
To me - even better than the others.......2006-06-10
I love all the Hotel Costes - they all vary, yet, are incredible in their own way. Vol 6 is more upbeat, great dancing, a fabulous CD to me. If you're looking for a very mellow CD, this is not, others in the collection are more mellow. It's wonderful, upbeat, great mix, perfect flow and transitions. I own many of the Hotel Costes and this is actually my favorite.

As this is the 7th release in the Hotel Costes series, you might think you know what to expect from DJ Stephane Pompougnac's turntables. But 2003's Hotel Costes 6 provided a dose of the dark and unexpected, a trend which happily continues on Costes 7. The usual oh-so-classy, jazz-tinged dance fare, driven into the ground by a thousand downtempo DJs, hasn't been totally expunged. But grittier tracks and a deeper commitment to a thumping beat make for a sound that's not so easy to ignore. Minor chords and heavy basslines from songs like Dolphin Boy's "Don't Stop (Dublex Inc Remix)" along with memorable contributions from Mark Rae and Mo' Horizons ensure this record won't fade into the background like another layer of cocktail party décor. The further Pompougnac gets from the swanky, but sterile hotel lobby, the better it is for listeners who prefer dancing over lounging. --Matthew Cooke

Sets the mood.......2007-06-26
iTunes classifies this as 'Easy Listening'. It is easy to listen to but it's not your Father's Montovani. Brassy, seductive, hip (I hate that term)....not easy listening though.
Hotel Costes Keeps the Beat........2007-02-20
This a good continouation of the previous albums from Hotel Costes. Songs like Lavish by Mark Rea, Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes by Thievery Corporation Feat. Emiliana Torrini gave the cd the smooth lounge feeling and hits like Hip Hip Chin Chin (Yaziko Club Mix) by Club Des Belugas and Palumba by Watch TV is a good up beat to the overall cd. I gave it 4 stars as I found some tunes Clive the Runner and So Ma Guisee was not really to my liking.
I would recommend it to all Costes lovers.
Enjoy!
Listen Before Buying.......2006-12-27
I am a fan of the earlier Costes series, but this disc has not got a single good cut on it. It was a gift, unfortunately.
Good, but there are better options .........2006-06-25
I was a big fan of the Hotel Costes series .. probably more of the Buddha bar series as well.. but Celestial is an upcoming fusion music mix thats quite good. And if you like that sound, then you'll love the albums from Hong Kong's Celestial. Check them out, they are titled:
Hong Kong Dub Station
Happy Valley
Spirit House
Enjoy the music!
ok..........2006-03-05

Customer Reviews:
Fun and loungy.......2001-12-11
I have all four of the Costes compilations and I must say that each one is unique yet carries the same style of Stephan Pompougnac. I was sorta surprised to see Grace Jones thrown into the mix, but now her song Libertango is one of my favorites. It's mysterious, with her strong voice and accordion playing in the background- and actually, it fits right in with all the other songs. De Phazz's NO Jive is another great track...Ok fine, and of course, My Funny Valentine is an excellent way to begin th CD
Much better than "etage trois"........2001-04-07
I only could get two of the trilogy from "le Costes", but this is definitely a better choice than "Etage trois". The sound is irreprochable (unlike the other cd where the recording level is too high and some tracks are over saturated, if you see what I mean), and the tempo is a bit higher. The overall quality of the songs and the mix is also better (all the tracks are mixed and you have no timeout between them).
Of course, you still find strange tracks that some will find absolutely cheesy (Actor Yves Montand telling a funny story in "pour faire le dessin d'un oiseau". It is an overdub and a tribute, because Montand passed away several years ago, but it is really too long). However I really appreciated listening to Grace Jones again, and the closing track (love the DJ) is top. Curiously enough, just as for the other cd, it only really gets hot after 8 cuts. From there on it's close to ecstasy... The packaging is great, with some comments about the club in a brochure you will find inside the sleeve.
Even if it's not the best cd in this genre that I have, it's recommendable if you have been there (I haven't yet) and are nostalgic, or if you like to have a cd to play when having friends over, or to go clubbing without even leaving your house or your car.
Beau and fantastic.......2001-02-09
I think this is one end where French pop rules. For those who think that French pop sucks and there is nothing original and new, then all I can say is "vous avez tort"!
This album is a great find and well worth it. It has such a sensual quality which pours over you like something seductive yet dark. It has such energy, but at the same time, it is so calm.
Keep this series going. Trop bien!
Believe it or not it's worth the money.......2000-11-29
I was a bit taken back by the price but I must say that this is a compilation with many new and different groups that you won't find in the ESL lounge family of artists.
The new players here are Rinocerose and Ballistic Brothers. This is a whole new direction in a sound established with forerunners like 9 Lazy 9 and Funky Porcini. All sixteen songs are fabulous the only weak link would be the Aphrodelics, but the rest are sounds that break new frontiers.
some guys have all the taste.......2000-11-17
If you want to live by the bossa-nova, put this record to play as the background music. If this SUITS you, check also Vol. 2 - "La Suite". I will never forget this record because here I discovered my love for the 2000 - De Phazz (No Jive). I think De-Phazz is one of the best kept secrets in downtempo and trip-jazz. And it's a pity. And I recommend "Chorando Sim" as well to everybody with a taste for subtle nuances. "Machine Pour les Oreilles" by Rinocerose - another trend-setting FBB from France.
