Not exactly dance-pop as commonly defined by Erasure or the Pet Shop Boys, Dirty Vegas's self-titled album nonetheless fits into the genre. In fact, "trace-pop" is arguably the best definition, as it is the likely offspring of Madonna's Ray of Light and Electronic's seminal debut CD. Promising, yes, but the songs become rather indistinguishable from one another, mainly because the vocals--compressed and folky--lend a sameness to tracks that are otherwise diverse in tone and pace. About half the album really shines. "I Should Know" marries a thumping techno beat with a euphoric Disney-like wonderment. "7AM" boasts the best melody on the album. The instrumental "The Brazilian" showcases the song's strength underneath the homogenizing vocals. And finally, "Days Go By," featured in a popular car commercial, mesmerizes with synthesized bongos and cosmic rhythmic brush strokes. --Beth Massa

From URB Magazine
Realize it or not, but you and most of mainstream American society are already intimately aware of UK trio Dirty Vegas. Thanks to the increasingly interesting world of car commercials mining the best of left-field electronic music for their soundtracks, we now have the world's first band to debut as part of a Mitsubishi campaign. Their electro-heavy "Days Gone By" will instantly invoke images of that hot brunette in the sexy cap dancing her cute little butt off, pop-lock style, from the heavily rotated advert (apologies to those with better things to do than watch TV). So when track 4 rolls around, prepare for anyone within earshot to ask, "What is this song?" Marketers around the world simultaneously weep with joy.

For the most part, Dirty Vegas play up the notoriety by not straying too far from the template set by "Days Gone By," with dance-intensive tracks like "Throwing Shapes," sharing the Mitsubishi song's thick psychedelic undertones, gurgling electro bass tones and slightly treated vocals of Steve Smith. Still, these fellows have their eyes set on more than just the dance floor, as they delve into straight pop-rock songwriting on numbers like "All or Nothing" (think an album track from mid-period Genesis. If you can't, your dad might have some in the den) and an acoustic version of "Days Gone By." From there the album kicks into cruise control, riding the easy-listening thump of "Alive" and the higher BPMs of "7am." So you want to go for a ride?

5 out of 5 stars You Should Know.......2007-03-31

Try not to think of the car commercial and you'll find "Days Go By" as a great song. Play the whole thing and you'll find how the rest of the songs also epitomize the sound of club music. They're a little like transcient pop, a little techo, and a little new age, but best of all are the hypnotic grooves which dominate this collection. This is dance music made chic with words that give food for thought. For example: "Never know what the future will bring, leave the past cause it don't mean a thing, so this is all or nothing."

5 out of 5 stars Club Techno.......2007-03-01

Love it! Saw where it was recommended by Barry Manilow, and since I LOVE everything Barry does, I thought I would check Dirty Vegas out. Loved it! Could really dance to this CD. My 33 year old son says it's called Club Music and he loves it too. Matter of fact, he keeps borrowing it and conveniently forgetting to return it. Most of it is awesome, with this great thumpin beat and that techno-electronica sound. Had it on in the car this morning and this slow moving loaded flatbed was in front of me and the music made me want to go-go-go. Drove me NUTS! (OK--MORE nuts!) Seriously--great sounds and great sound quality. Barry was correct. (I knew he wouldn't fib anyway.)

4 out of 5 stars Funcadelic!.......2006-01-12

Loved it! Goos Cd to chill to or simply to funk around! Love the music, love the different beats, love it! Great First start!

2 out of 5 stars Not so much..........2005-08-19

All in all not a horrible album, but their Pink Floyd The Wall ending to the CD seemed about as appropriate as a fart in church.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album!.......2005-07-03

This one's a keeper! Music fit for dancing, driving, or listening. Great stuff.

Still primarily known in the U.S. for the slow-burning groove track "Days Gone By," Dirty Vegas aren't interested in making people dance on One. Programmed beats and driving keyboards have been ditched entirely. In their place, the DV trio indulges their instrumental id, trotting out guitars, pop song structure, and deadly earnest New Wavy rock. It's a bold move, and while they occasionally pull off decent melodies (the chorus in "Roses" for instance), they're not playing to their strengths. Robbed of the band's electronica instincts, songs like "Walk Into the Sun" and "Closer" lack personality and Steve Smith's vocals, thin at best, are too forward in the ultra-polished mix. Things improve slightly when a decent thump shows up on "A Million Ways," but it's not long before rhythm is banished once again. Disarmed of their primary weapon, Dirty Vegas sound way too clean. -Matthew Cooke

3 out of 5 stars Don't Miss the Single Version of "... Sun".......2005-09-20

I bought this on the strength of the single "Walk Into the Sun" but this CD does not contain the radio edit thereof. So I also bought the CD single of that and I have played it to death. "One" is pretty good. The strongest cuts in my opinion are "A Million Ways" and "Given You Everything". I'd like to see these guys minimize the whimp factor in future efforts and concentrate on rocking/trancing out. The intro of "Closer" made me double check that I hadn't put on my Bread's Greatest Hits CD. With apologies to David Gates...

5 out of 5 stars Back after Days Go By.......2005-08-07

Dirty Vegas was most noticeable for their hit single "Days go By" featured on their debut album. It was on the popular car commerical and was played on the radio numerous of times, and won a grammy for their #1 hit song. Now with Dirty Vegas sophomore effort "One", it's more laid-back and more stable then their debut album. One represents love songs, & emotions. The songs are orchestral going strong with vocals, and not so much electronica than the debut. I prefer this album over the debut because this album was more put together vocally, lyrically and musically than the debut. With tracks like "Home Again" is produced by an eight piece orchestra. The vocals are way stronger than ever before, and is professionaly done. "A Million Things" reminds me a song from their debut "7 AM". That song is closest to the electronica genre that it gets. Both albums are excellent, but this one places 1st in my book because the album has more meaning and more definition and is more radio friendly with potential singles. This album does lack the electronica genre and focuses more on the orchestral-lite pop-lite rock line. I absolutely love it. Buy it for yourself, and listen to "ONE".

4 out of 5 stars A slighly different Dirty Vegas.......2005-05-07

If you have been reading the other reviews it should be apparent to you by now that a lot of people find this album very different than the last. So is it really? Well... yes and no. If you have the first album and really soaked up all the music and not just "Days Go By" then the album isn't all that different. If you're just into their electronic dance music stuff then you will say it's way different.

The boys have gone more acoustic. That's the only real difference here. The singing style. The music structure. The feel and look of Dirty Vegas hasn't really changed. Just how they arranged it. Instead of a lot of driving electronic beats and deep electronic basslines you get more acoustic guitars and not-so-heavy rhythms. I guess for some that's the deal breaker. For me it's still all good. Listen to about half the tracks on their first album (NOT Days Go By, which I personally feel is the weakest song of that CD but still like) and you will see the songwriting hasn't changed. The boys still have a knack for catchy melodies and nice musicial arrangments. It's a shame a lot of you are dissing them just because it's no longer club sounding.

I will say this little nugget of negative truth about this album, and that's their writing style. On their first album they did explore more into different moods and ideas than they have on One. I am noticing a lot of the songs now have an almost identical song structure. The grooves, tempo and feel of these songs are different, but just about any music theory student will notice definite similarities in almost every song in that album (and in songs from their first album). The average user will probably only notice it in a subtle way. Like they are hearing nothing new but can't put their finger on it. While I happen to like the structure they use, repetition is still repetition and it starts to grate on your after a while. This album is probably best served by separating the tracks and putting on a mix tape with some different stuff in between.

The main mood I feel of the album is kind of laid back. Althought that's not really being fair. Tracks like HUMAN LOVE and GIVEN YOU EVERYTHING are powerful and aggressive. WALK INTO THE SUN and A MILLION WAYS also perk up the ears (with the latter being more EDM than the rest). I guess the first two tracks set the tone for me with their peppy and cheerful grooves. I swear HOME AGAIN would make a perfect song for a car commercial.

This is a great album. It shows the group is willing to stretch out of their boundaries a bit and not be pigeon-holed as "the Days Go By" band. They didn't depart that far from their own style, but apparently it's enough to ruffle more than a few feathers. If the only song from Dirty Vegas you ever heard was their one club hit then pass on this one if that's all you expect. If you have enjoyed their last album... all of it... then this one should make sense.

Still if I have to say which Dirty Vegas album I like best it will still have to be their debut album. Not because of "that song", but because of all of the other songs on that CD. They just had more variation in their song writing style on their first album. However One is a close... very close... second and is a purchase I'm very glad I made.

4 out of 5 stars It's not too bad.......2005-05-06

Contrary to popular belief, Dirty Vegas was never really about dance or techno, that's simply how their songs came out in the first album. If you listen to the entire album, however, you see that much of the album has a more rock/pop quality to it. That is not to say that Dirty Vegas was pop either, they just do their own thing, and that's what makes them good. Their music still has that ethereal ballad-like quality that it had in the first album, and most of the songs have their merit. Just because Dirty Vegas didn't do the same thing they did before doesn't make their music bad or boring. I like it.

2 out of 5 stars Sophmore Jinx.......2005-03-02

I have given this album ample chance to grow on me, but like most other reviewers, I just can't get into it. I really wanted to like this album as much as I did their first, but "One" is a huge letdown. Gone are the cool electronic sounds and everything else that made their debut album unique and exciting. What we get instead is an album full of bad generic sounding adult-contemporary pop.

The two exceptions to "One's" overall blandness are the songs "A Million Ways" and "In This Life," they are both great songs, but I'd recommend picking up those two at iTunes and saving some money. Or if you're really curious, pick up one of the hundreds of used copies for five or six bucks!

This CD would've been perfect, had they skipped the re-make of a certain rock song I won't mention here!!!! The rest was great!!!

5 out of 5 stars HYPNOTIC.......2003-01-27

The hypnotic quality of this sad love song shines through on all 4 mixes (my Australian import includes the 9 minute Lucien Foort Remix) of this tune (even the acoustic version).

1 out of 5 stars More pop garbage.......2002-09-21

I think its funny how many people are into this, just because its in a car commercial. This song is third rate compared to much of the dance that came out last year. Of course those songs weren't in catchy commercials...

Go ahead and keep eating up what ever the mainstream tosses you and act like you are the unique little flower who picked this as your favorite song.

I preferred these guys as the Hydrogen Rockers, before they softened up and sold out.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it for the Acoustic Version!.......2002-09-13

By now, you're all familiar with the housed-up dance hit "Days Go By," which is already shaping up to be one of the best singles of the year. But this CD is worth picking up for the acoustic version, which is stunningly good. These guys strip the song of its synthetic and electronic production, and the result is a breathtakingly good slice of folk pop that codgers like James Taylor could only dream of recording. Pure bliss! Indulge and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Chillout & Dance.......2002-08-15

If there was any way to start off the music of the new millenium, this was definately the way to do it. It's got a beat that would move the uptight stiff that always bugs you at work, and the trancy vocals takes you somewhere else. Both mixed together make the song breathtaking. I was even more impressed with Dirty Vegas, when I saw them perform live on a late night talk show, which was far more different than I had expected, especially because they performed the acoustic version. Since that day it became a collection in my all-time favourite songs list. This is a great song for when you just want to relax to a classic chillout track, or groove to an equally impressive dance song.

Dirty Vegas continue to offer dynamic surprises, the latest being this "sound system" mix collection, which cruises along techno-trance alley with a smooth sexiness that will appeal to newbies and scenesters. Whether it's the effortless slip between Oscar G & Ralph Falcon's "Dark Beat" into Underworld's latest barnstormer, "Two Months Off"; their own dark trance contribution, "Ghosts (M.A.S Collective vocal)"; or the delicious segue from the godfather of house, Frankie Knuckles, into Sandy Rivera featuring Haze's, Deep Dish-flavored "Changes"; Dirty Vegas prove they have fine taste to match their talent. A Night at the Tables works well for late-night urban cruises and swank cocktail soirees alike. --Steffan Chirazi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars OK, I bought it because of the car spot!.......2003-10-25

Just like the group's debut CD, interest for me in this group was spawned by the hit Mitsubishi ad. That withstanding, how does "A Night at the Tables" measure up to their international smash debut? Well, it's a decent blend of house, trance, disco, dance, Europop...whatever one wants to call it.

And what more can be a guy that occasionally likes to "trip the light fantastic" ask for?

4 out of 5 stars Dirty Vegas's DJ mix is very appealing.......2003-06-27

If you were a fan of the dance music on Dirty Vegas's self-titled debut, then you will enjoy this Ultra release with songs picked and mixed by Dirty Vegas. This is a different brand of techno music than you will find on releases like "Ultra.Dance 03." It's more "underground."

When I first stuck this CD in, i was not impressed with the first two songs. When I saw the name "Kylie Minogue" the Scumfrog Beauty & The Beast remix was not what I expected. Initially I did not like this song but later appreciated it. I do not think it was a good album to start out with though. Oscar G & Ralph Falcon's "Dark Beat" has grown to be one of my favorite songs but I have always loved Underworld's strange "2 Months Off." Tracks 4 & 5 ("See" and "Keep on Moving") are good tracks that keep the album upbeat but again, I'd never heard of either of these artists. I really appreciated "Changes" for the vocals but was somewhat disappointed with the M.A.S. Collective Vocal remix of Dirty Vegas's own "Ghosts." Where's the chorus? Anyway, I liked the music in "Changes" (Track 8) but the vocals sounded dated. Track 9 & 10 are interesting but infectious. The more I listened, the more I liked 440 Central's "Talkin About The Revolution." I did not like Del Gado's "Coffee Beats Vol. 2" but I did like the Alex Neri Club Mix of Dirty Vegas's "I Should Know."

I appreciated that "Days Go By" was not on this mix. If you are a fan of underground club music or the brand of dance music on "Dirty Vegas" then you will appreciate this album.

3 out of 5 stars not that good really.......2003-05-04

Big fan of Dirty Vegas but the mixes here are pretty forgettable. Even the 2 mixes of Dirty Vegas' songs are uninteresting. A couple of the others songs are outright terrible. It looks like this was a quick cash-in for the band while their other album was on the charts

2 out of 5 stars not that good.......2003-03-08

The mixes drone a bit more than they should -- if you are looking for something as good as any song on Dirty Vegas' last CD, you won't find even one song that good. Even the remixes of Dirty Vegas songs are uninspired. I'm not sure why other reviewers can give this 4 and 5 stars

5 out of 5 stars A stunning house mix for your Saturday nights.......2003-02-16

I'm not really a big house music fan as I once was a few years ago but I am a big fan of Dirty Vegas. I absolutely adore their self-titled debut album. I had to have their mix cd "Night at the Tables". I enjoyed "Night at the Tables" a lot. I thought it was a great mix of techno and house music, with maybe hints of trance thrown into the mix. I'm glad to see that they didn't make this mix cd any really predictable by throwing in their big hit "Days Go By". I love that song to pieces but by adding it to the mix, they would have the cd pretty predictable by diehard dance enthusiasts like myself. The song selection was pretty solid I thought. Although "Love At First Sight" isn't my favorite Kylie Minoge song, I definitely prefer the Scumfrog Beauty & The Beast Vocal Mix over the original version. Most of the songs I am not really familiar with but I did enjoy them. I love the two Dirty Vegas songs they threw in, "Ghosts" and "I Should Know" are my personal DV songs. The remixes were fantastic and very energetic. And of course my favorite Underworld song from their new album, "2 Months Off". Solid album. Definitely an excellent album to throw into the stereo before hitting the night clubs on a Saturday night.

4 out of 5 stars electro & rock a-sides.......2004-11-25

After one year of silence, Dirty Vegas is back with a new album and a new single. Two tracks on this release:

1. Walk Into The Sun (Radio Edit) 3:59
2. State Of Mind 5:54

The first track is a nice electro song with guitars. A hit from the first listening.

I wasn't sure what to expect about the b-side. It is a great rock song, similar in style to Oasis' Standing On The Shoulders of Giants. The bass is loud, the guitars crispy and the vocals are awesome. This non-lp track could easily have been the second single off their new album. It was added as a bonus track on the Japanese version of "One".

This single is part of a two cd set and this is where it loses one star. The British industry has not yet renounced to its 20-minute limit imposed on cd-singles to be taken into account in the national charts. On the cd-single, a sticker says: "Expect to pay no more than 2 British pounds"...

5 out of 5 stars Peter Rauhofer...before he turned into "Roxy" superstar.......2004-09-08

I think that this is the best mix that Peter has put on CD. It really tops anything he's done, so far (Live at Roxy vol 1 is a REALLY close one, though). Here, he's deep and rough, and is giving us a glimpse of his now-infamous "sound". Yes, I agree, the mix can seem to be dragging on at times. But once you listen to all of these tracks singularly, you can fully appreciate them. Airmale's debut tracks are included on this mix, as well as various other hard to find gems like Vidal, Alma Matris, and Black Sun Project. Pick this up if you REALLY want to know where Peter's foundation lies.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't Hold Up Over Time.......2003-08-31

Don't get me wrong, I think Rauhofer is tops in afterhours hard house and tribal but "Essential Mix" doesn't stand the test of time....its labored, drags on and won't stay in your top cd rotation. There aren't hidden gems on this one that you'll want to come back to in a month or so....if your looking for Rauhofer at his best, check out Live @ Roxy.....because live is where the man shines !! Either volume of Roxy Live (1 or 2) is vastly superior to this one !!

5 out of 5 stars Peter Rauhofer - Afterhours Circuit Party GOD!.......2003-06-19

Peter Rauhofer is once again, superb! This collection takes you on a journey into HIS world. Peter plays in clubs all over Los Angeles and San Diego. He's one of our favorites (my partner and I). Anybody into the gay L.A. afterhours, circuit scene will certainly hear familiar tracks on this set. Just putting this CD in my player makes me want to drive to the Mayan in downtown L.A. and work up a sweat dancing to Peter all night (and morning) long. It's dark and heavy on the bass.......so sweet!

5 out of 5 stars tHiS cD iS HoTT!!.......2002-10-07

If you like hard tribal with just a touch of vocals and a hint of techno def scoop up this this cD. Peter's technique and track selection always makes me wanna dance, and this cd follows suit. Very energetic and flows nice throughout, full of hard basslines and smooth mixing.
If you bought this cd just for "days go by", you have no clue and were better off buying the dirty vegas cd single!
This is for the real clubbers/dancers/hard-house/tribal fans!

5 out of 5 stars Great mix!.......2002-07-06

I saw Peter Rauhofer at a show in West Hollywood recently, and so had to check out his mix CDs. This is a collection that is representative of his 'live' sets, with hardhitting tribal/trance-type music, with some mainstream classics thrown into the mix. The first disc is the darker, more mellow set, while the second disc is more upbeat. Highlights include Deep Swing's "in the music", Bedrock's "Voices", Arkana's "Skin" and Dirty Vegas's "Days go by". Great circuit party music, so if you are into that sort of thing, this is the album for you.

4 out of 5 stars Days Go By itself is a 5 star tune.......2004-10-02

So what if Dirty Vegas is a certified 1 Hit Wonder? Better to be 1 than a No Hit Blunder. 'Days Go By' still sounds fresh, hypnotic and as compelling as ever more than 2 years since we all first heard it on that Mitsubishi car commercial.

I wager that it will still sound the same way 2 years and more from now. Catch the video if you can track it down too.

And no, the Acoustic Mix (which sounds like the demo) is rather pedestrian. The other mixes are anything but.

5 out of 5 stars HYPNOTIC.......2003-01-30

The hypnotic quality of this sad love song shines through on all 4 mixes of this tune (even the acoustic version). This CD (my copy is Australian) costs less than the 3 track U.K. edition and includes the 9 minute Lucien Foort Remix. Go figure.

4 out of 5 stars These are songs that are surprising fun.......2004-11-11

Think of this as a playlist for an ipod, not a remix album. This is an effort by the band to turn people on to songs that wouldn't necessarily be on your list of dance party tunes; but trust me, at 4 a.m. you'll be singing along at the top of your lungs.

1 out of 5 stars A total waste of money.......2004-07-21

No need to buy this CD. I can't believe it. The cover of the CD has a sticker that says "PRODUCED AND MIXED BY DIRTY VEGAS". OK anyone who reads this would think...very cool they totally mixed and edited all of these old classic songs. NOPE, nothing, they just put this greatest hits of Dirty Vegas together. I wasted my money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Children of the 80's Rejoice!.......2004-03-07

Ok, here's the deal. I like this CD. It is a good CD. I've listened to it several times in a row on occasion. It has songs that most will find familiar and even sing along to. Growing up in the 80's and early 90's, these are the songs I listened to before I knew what electronic music was. Alterations to the songs are subtle but worth the listen. Likely as not you'll find yourself jammin' out to what you're listening to. Take a look at the track list, then take a ride down memory lane. This disk is almost exactly what you would expect to hear late on a slow night in the club. So, raise your glass and say hi to that stranger sitting next to you at the bar.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money!.......2004-02-20

I am writing this review because I don't want another person to read the editor's reviews and believe that this CD is anything but garbage. I am a huge fan of Dirty Vegas, but by far, this is not their best effort. In fact, it took no effort on their part at all. They put a couple of songs from the 80's and 90's and compiled them on one CD. There wasn't any great beats, vocal overlays, or anything to speak of that would have made this CD unique. I could have made this CD at home on my computer and "mixed" it better than this. Please, if you value your money spend it on something else. Let this CD go to the wayside. You will be better for it. I ended up giving my copy away!
