Product Description
Please welcome the ubiquitous duo, Masters at Work to BBE Records "Kings of" series. Kenny Dope & Louie Vega (aka Masters at Work) have been working together for 15 years. They are gods of the global dance movement, overground as well as underground. Whether DJ'ing, remixing, reconstructing, working on their own productions or running their numerous labels; their unflinching commitment to innovation, experimentation and self expression makes them as prolific today as they were from day one.
Transcending fashion; not afraid to mix techno with Latino, drop hip hop beats over a house groove or take out the 4/4 all together and leave the snares clattering loose and free, they remain true to their musical spectrum which influences them.
Their selections take us on a journey to Chicago; re-visiting their House roots (Joe Smooth, Sterling Void), early rave anthems typifying the summer of love' (Santonio's Rock To The Beat'), perhaps the first ever jazz house record (Mr. Fingers Can You Feel It') as well as awesome jackin' House (Master C & J's Face It'). Kings of House is a remarkable mix from today's Kings of the genre, bowing reverentially at the virtuoso performances from the inventers of the movement.

Customer Reviews:
CD 1 moved me, CD 2 was just OK.......2006-02-21
I'm a fan of Masters At Work. Their productions were a staple of my music arsenal during the House years. I was very happy to see some "new" (albeit old material) house mixes. However I was a little disappointed. The Kenny Dope CD (CD 1) is tight. Good selections and good blends. The Louie Vega CD (CD 2) didn't move me as much, mainly due to the selection of tracks. My preference is towards what is now called "soulful" house.
very good house compilation by a couple of legends.......2005-11-16
Masters at Work have been at the top of the house scene for more than fifteen years now.
Louie Vega is one of the greatest DJs of all time with a career spanning more than 20 years. I recently learned that he was the first dj to break freestyle (a now defunct style of NYC dance music). Louie has also released some amazing albums recently with his Elements of Life band.
Kenny Dope is an amazing DJ and producer. He brings hip hop sensibilities to jazzy and vocal house music. Hes also one of the best drum programmers ever to touch an mpc.
Together as masters at work, kenny and louie are an amazing production team that has produced some of the best modern dance music ever. Their album as nuyorican soul is really amazing.
Enough about them...
This album is a great mix of classic club tunes. There are also one or two newer songs (V gets jazzy is a remake of KC Flightt's classic "lets get jazzy"). other new songs mixed in are "i wanna see you freak (like this)" which is a remake of Chip E's like this, which itself is a remake of ESG's moody (all bangin club classics). If you like eclectic dance music with a soulful feeling then this is for you. Many of these tracks are very raw and are from a time when house music was very new and the people making the songs had very little money. So they are very basic, but they convey a raw instinct that is missing from a lot of music these days. The idea here is to dance! Its not about anything else. Close your eyes, put this cd on full volume (with plenty of bass) and picture a dark hot room with 300 people stomping the floor at 5am.
My favorite song is Romanthony's "let me show you love" which has not been re-released since 1994 when it first came out. If you can get your hands on the vinyl version of this compilation, you get the full version of that track.
I would disagree with the previous review stating that diva house vocals are 'cheesy'... you either like it or you dont!
Long Live The Kings! .......2005-08-31
Kenny Dope and Little Louie Vega, fifteen-year veterans of the club scene, revisit the Chicago-style House music of the late eighties and early nineties. Vega focuses on the dance anthems of that era, while Dope weaves a spare, seamless, largely instrumental mix over one irresistible disc.
On Dope's section, lyrics are infrequent and cheesy diva wailing is used sparingly. What remains is the ecstasy minus the excess. Vega shows less restraint, and his contributions suffer accordingly. Yet he makes a few excellent choices, especially Joe Smooth's Promised Land and Frankie Knuckles' Your Love.
This compilation captures the purity of a sound that in recent years has been widely commercialized, reminding us that long after the death of Disco, House got the world dancing again.

Customer Reviews:
A true, enduring masterpiece!.......2005-09-01
There have been many milestones in film music history that have resonated through the decades finding new audiences and inspiring new recordings.
Unique among them is "The Egyptian," a major collaboration between uber-composers Bernard Herrmann (to whom the film was assigned) and Alfred Newman (20th Century-Fox Music Department head and all-time great composer/conductor). While Herrmann got the initial assignment, the allotted time was inadequate for him to do justice to the film. Newman stepped in and developed thematic materials which Herrmann incorporated into his own desginated sections of the film, while Newman the rest.
In my opinion, "The Egyptian" -- as a film -- stands well above most epics of the 50s, but it has some serious detractors who, for whatever reasons, find no value in the authentic atmosphere, fantastic sets, stunning cinematography and brilliant music underscoring. Add to that some solid performances from Victor Mature, Jean Simmons, Peter Ustinov and Michael Wilding (plus a stolid, if uninvolving leading performance by Edmund Purdom) and you really get a stunning piece of entertainment that holds the attention, dazzles the eyes and ears and becomes emotionally involving. Wilding, as the pharaoh, has the film's -- and one of filmdom's -- best moments near the end of the film. Newman's underscoring for that scene -- called "Death of Akhnaton" -- is an example of what film scoring is all about. It also heightens awareness of what seems to be missing from many of today's film composers resumes -- intensive education in music theory, counterpoint, harmony and exposure to all forms of music. The scene is breathtaking, heartbreakingly performed and musically overwhelming, although the music is always "under" the scene rather than rampaging over it.
There are so many wonderful pieces of music in this film that I acknowledge my inadequacy to present a case for them. The proof is in the listening. From the awe-inspiring opening to the exquisite theme for "Merit" to the sinuous, hypnotic theme for "Nefer", Herrmann and Newman have created a musical palette of stunning splendors. There is no other soundtrack album like it.
I cannot overstate its importance, the splendiferousness of its performance on this recording by the 20th Century-Fox Studio Orchestra as conducted by Alfred Newman, and the glorious choral work of Newman's right-hand man, Ken Darby.
This is film music history. Any collection without it is hollow.

Product Description
Combining the aesthetics of Kraftwerk with Motown girl groups from the 60s and musical influences from Burt Bucharach to The Smiths, Acid House Kings have created a classic album of timeless pop perfection. True to their Swedish origin, the Kings cannot hide a certain debt to the stylish arrangements and crystal clear melodies of ABBA.
Customer Reviews:
reaching their full potential.......2006-05-25
the last AHK album, 'mondays are like tuesdays are like wednesdays' was, for lack of a better word, a 'cute' album. it was snappy and cheerful and sometimes a bit too twee for its own good. however, the displayed moments of brilliance, particularly in the songs, 'sunday morning,' and 'she keeps hoping.' it was a sign that the band, including the brains behind club 8 and the legends, johan angergard, was capable of something truly great.
fortunately, 'sing along with the acid house kings,' capitalizes on all the best bits of 'maltalw,' expands on its sound, ditches the cutesy vocals and quasi-nauseating strings in favor of a more straight-forward sound. the album's opener, 'that's because you drive me' is a perfect pop songs. it begins with a driving acoustic guitar (if such a thing is possible), and leaves the decorative piano decorative. 'do what you wanna do' is the clear album standout. it's a three minute exercise in pop perfection. there's a very fine line between pastiche and authentic. 'do what you wanna do,' which could have resulted in the former, stays firmly planted in the authentic. it's an utterly brilliant song, complete with handclaps, shiny guitars, and a flawless chorus. it represents what AHK do best: ridiculously catchy pop songs. 'this heart is a stone' ventures into the slighty cheesy, but the chorus ultimately saves it from failure. other standout tracks include 'london school of economics' and 'tonight is forever,' the latter a disco-inspired stomper with some skilled guitar work and as alwasy, the incredible chorus. AHK are all about pop songs, and no one does it better.
all in all, 'sing along with the acid house kings' is a great step forward in the band's evolution. the second half of the album could've been stronger, but with each album johan creates (whether it be with AHK, club 8, or the legends) he seems to grow as songwriter and musician. those who've not yet jumped on the johan train would be well-advised to do so. he's making the best pop music on the planet.
Make Love To This.......2006-01-18
If you are in to making love, you cannot afford not to purchase this. Check out the song entitled "This Heart is a Stone."
Strictly for love making fans only
p.s.
I think the "Elusive Spider Monkey" is probably the ideal position to try when making love, while listening to the song "Sleeping"
Slightly cheesy, yet solid, Swedish pop music - it's arguably barely a classic - chances are you'll love this!.......2006-01-09
Acid House Kings' "Sing Along With The Acid House Kings" is a little cheesy, yes, but they still manage to create some pretty unique, fun and catchy tunes. Comparisons to The Kings Of Convenience wouldn't be unwarranted, as it's relatively similar, but Acid House Kings tend to use more instruments and production (pianos, drums occasionally, etc). It's a very nice and mellow album which arguably loses a little steam towards the end (though it's all good, the first set of songs are great - a couple are a tad questionable (see "Sleeping")). Most will like the male vocalist, but the female vocalist isn't *as good* I would argue (she's still pretty good, but compared to him there's an obvious difference). The lyrics are also surprisingly fun and interesting (and occasionally emotional). I'm giving this "5" stars for four reasons - it doesn't really sound like any other band today, all of it's good, it's a pretty mellow/relaxing album and "That's Because You Drive Me" is just a great song. Most people will like this, pop fans especially. Highly recommended! If you liked this album then chances are you'll LOVE practically any Kings Of Convenience album.

everything except "Sleeping"

Album Description
This new "Kings of
" BBE-series brings together the globe's supreme supporter of a particular musical genre and asks them to reach deep into their vaults for lesser-known gems. The first release, The Kings Of Disco, is a compilation by two world-renowned DJ's, Dimitri From Paris and Joey Negro. Famous for their science of mixing house with disco, the two DJs also have a prolific list of production & remix credits under their belts. In 1997 Dimitri From Paris released his first album Sacrebleu, a subtle mix of jazzy samba and soft house. With Sacrebleu selling over 80,000 copies, Dimitri went on to release the successful mix compilations, A Night at the Playboy Mansion, Disco Forever, followed by After the Playboy Mansion, and his most recent contribution to the In the House Series .
Dave Lee (AKA Joey Negro), prominent Artist, Producer, Remixer , Arranger, Songwriter and DJ, is the producer of choice for artists and record companies the world over. One of the UK's first heavyweight dance producers, Dave's superior productions skills have led him to work with some of the brightest and biggest names in music including Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Artful Dodger, the Pet Shop Boys, Mariah Carey, Seal and Royksopp.
There's no better way to introduce a new series than with the two dons of the disco house scene, who are sure to deliver a strong collection of retro grooves, disco anthems, and dancefloor classics.
Customer Reviews:
THIS is Disco..........2005-07-13
Many people mistake the candy-corn, cheese-pop from the 70's that polluted the airwaves as Disco. They're wrong. Disco is the music that was actually played in the real clubs and Discotheques across America at the height of the genre. It was underground music by little-known bands for a select group of people that really understood it.
Dimitri and Joey Negro present an elegant and eclectic collection of Disco that is rare and precious. It's a true glimpse of how real Disco sounds. These are gritty, aggressive selections complete with edits by two of the best in the business. Anyone who's a true Disco fan or collector would jump at the chance to grab this title before it's gone.
EXCELLENT!
The Kings of Disco .......2005-01-06
Yes the Kings of Disco has a great album name going for it first and foremost.
Basically, this is a collection of hard-to-find disco records on the ever-solid K7 label. This double disc is compiled by two world-class DJ's with great musical taste.
The tracks are definitely obscure and most people have never heard of any of the songs or the groups (with the exception of Yazoo maybe).
The music is very grooving and upbeat. It's good music for fun times. Good party music to blow through your speakers.
(Find it at the k7 site for a lot cheaper)
rare: yes, interesting: maybe..........2004-12-10
the biggest disappointment was at first the fact that the cd was not mixed, or at least there wasnt a separate mixed version CD like dimitri has done before (i had this item pre-ordered). I guess that half the value of dimitri's cds is that they are mixed, so u can play them at a party and have a certain degree of grooviness going.. Other than that, the cd is exactly what the two men describe: a sincere attempt to share their viniyl rarities (a little bit re-touched though) with the rest of us, whether this is over-rated or not..
Compilers Compete With The Acts.......2004-12-08
First, be clear that the title of this set does not refer to male vocalists or producers; "Kings" refers-- with hubris-- to the two men compiling the selections. They not only chose the recordings for this two-disc set, they remixed them to some degree. Each track is separate-- but edited, altered to make uniform the tempo, or otherwise changed from its original vinyl condition. The bad news is that many times the CD version will sound different from the vinyl one, if the listener has any of the originals. The good news is that the "kings" stick to sounds consistent with the 70s and early 80s. Fortunately these tracks have not been remixed with drum machines and synthed-up effects.
This set is perhaps more varied than the BBE "Disco Spectrum" releases. There are a few overlooked gems but also some cheesy selections. There are more tracks on these CDs than the other BBE sets that cross the line from acoustic rhythm sections of the 70s into the more electro 80s sound. I hear less soulfulness on this collection, more emphasis on what would be a contemporary club sound.
BBE seems intent on ruining our eyes. These releases have extensive liner comments about the records, but often put in tiny print in color selections that make for interesting graphics but poor reading. The white type on light gray has here been replaced with white type on red that will have you seeing afterimages if you try to peruse the notes. This set has the worst-yet example of poor BBE writing-- is it really so hard to get a proofreader to review the writing so that the phrases make sense and the grammar is cleaned up? It would make the package more credible.
The theme of the project is this: a collaboration between two rabid collectors of rareties on the internet auctions. They get together to present their selection of valued finds and congratulate themselves on their persistence. There are some entertaining tracks on these discs. The focus of this BBE release, however, has moved more to the personality and tastes of the compilers and less on the acts. Perhaps this is a result of the rarity of the records, which have little information about production. One hopes that the BBE series is not petering out, for it has presented some great collections over the years.
Disco Pearl's.......2004-11-17
This isn't a mix cd, it's a copilation from both Dj about not very famous or not remembered Disco Music hits. A like both DJ, but i like joey Negro better.
It's a cool Cd, and if you like real Disco and Funk, out of what your local Dj play every Friday and Saturday night, this one it's for you.
If you looking for something more comercial, i don't recommend it, this cd needs appraisuation, every song is like those pearls that your granma's has.

A Terrific Album.......2006-02-11
It is a shame there is only 1 CD from this bunch, a studio album with a decidedly live feel to it, KING DOLLAR is one great collection of blues. Probably the weakest cut(s) is (are) the Stones cover(s) and they are not bad. Some great takes on Robert Johnson material as well as orginal songs. Great, great slide playing and blues harp drive this. A definite swamp feel to the material - if you like the blues you will LOVE this.
A hidden treasure for blues-lovers.......2004-11-12
Paul Black is a slide master with a rich, soulful voice, and his CD has a funky, swampy sound that just gets better every time you listen to it. The CD includes some of Paul's own songs along with his take on classics by Robert Johnson and others, and every song is as good as the next one. This guy is the real deal - check it out.
paul black is the king.......2004-05-23
out of madison wisconsin...there simply is and was no better electric slide blues guitar player/singer anywhere...he is a virtuoso and a pure blues enigma...he might play sitting down with a big red hollow-body electric and sing and play the coolest, drippingest, hippest, thickest, most riveting and inventive blues you ever heard....and i've heard 'em all. you should hear, better yet, see and hear his rendition of "wee wee hours"; mind boggling. i heard that song on a cassette he once mailed me...wish to hell i could order that album on cd from amazon.com.

The US version of this EP single contains the exclusive cover of the Loveninjas' "keep Your Love"

Customer Reviews:
Wow! What an album!!!.......2004-10-15
I must start by saying that even though I don't own the limited edition of this release I am fortunate enough to have the vinyl editions of the tracks on cd two.
So let's begin with cd one:
Right from the beginning this cd takes off and flies! The KOT Anthem is cookin'. Although it's really short it grabs you because of the beat. Besides, back in the day in Chicago, djs would often play a beat track or an instrumental and you would hear a short speech being played over the track. Track two has a sweet vocal. 'Nuff said! Track three is an excellent cover of a Sister Sledge classic. The next track has yet another sweet vocal. Add a real jazz/funk element to the beat and you have a smooth song. Next track, "My Love Is Real": groovin' vocals again. We also get something of a disco/rock feel. Makes you wonder how come this stuff isn't on MTV! Track six, for the hard-heads. Not really hard, but tough and driven to make you dance! Track seven comes on strong with the vocals once again. Where do they get the vocalists from???? This time we are treated with Treassa Fennie and Dawn Tallman providing background vocals. Awesome! The next track is all about dancing, and I'm not just saying that because of the title! This will make you move. We have the old skool disco sound here, which is appropriate because disco never died, it became House! Track nine is such a smoothie. "Nuff said! Track ten is one of those all-time anthems. If you don't know now you know! Track eleven is simple but effective. Sometimes all you need is a simple bassline and simple lyrics, then let the vocalists take over! Track twelve has the same formula. Track thirteen takes you to the jazz/funk area again.
Now for cd two:
"Finally" gets a boost, courtesy of Louie Vega. The Dance Ritual Mix and Kosmic Dub are the bomb! I don't have the Nuyorican Soul Mix but I have heard it before and it rocks, too! Kevin Yost's mix goes deep. Lenny Fontany gives "Tear It Up" a mellow treatment while Bob Sinclair gives it the spooky disco treatment. And then there's "In The Night". Tough, but soulful and the vocals stand strong. Considering that these are all tracks that were previously vinyl releases the only thing left to say is that anyone who gets vinyl will be just as lucky as anyone who gets this limited edition double set. All of the remixes are hot and are sure to please any dedicated house fan.

Cardigan rock.......2006-02-17
Ah, Sweden - the gift that keeps giving. As if it wasn't enough to bestow the world with The Cardigans, flat-pack furniture, the adjustable wrench and the fabbest four of them all (do I really need to name them? Shame on you), the list of delights continues with the sweet musical charm that is Acid House Kings.
With their family-portrait-meets-knitting-pattern album sleeve and strangely inappropriate name (that conjures up images of a dance act) Acid House Kings are in fact melodic summery guitar-pop confection. Their music is nothing groundbreaking and frankly, you've heard it all before. There's nothing remotely challenging or fussy about their 12 songs in 36 mins pop style, but somewhere in their simplicity and familiarity lies the absolute genius of their music.
Sharing a musical kinship with indie labels such as Sarah and Parasol and pop acts such as Belle & Sebastian, Saint Etienne or Birdie, it comes as little surprise to find they feature members of the Euro pop groups Red Sleeping Beauty and Club 8. Sing Along With Acid House Kings is most successful when they showcase the honeyed vocals of Julia Lannerheim but the milquetoast vocals of Niklas Angergård also have an anaemic charm that grows on you. Stand out tracks are 7 Days which will surely tempt the use the CD track repeat button, My Heart Is a Stone with a swinging rhythm and unexpected stuttering pauses and Tomorrow is Forever - disco-lite featuring Niklas and Julia's call-and-response vocals and yet another knock-out chorus.
This is note-perfect indie-bubblegum that defies you not to love it by the third spin. Initial quantities of the album come with a bonus DVD of exclusive videos made by the band (mostly in their living rooms it seems, would you expect anything else?) and karaoke versions of all the songs. Uncomplicated, clean-cut, utterly unpretentious and entirely lovable, Acid House Kings are set to soundtrack Summer trips to the beach, afternoons dozing in the garden or at the very least to calm your nerves and sing a long to while putting together that Leksvik coffee table or Billy bookshelf.
Catchy as it can get.......2006-02-15
To start off this album is extremely catchy. You can easily see oneself singing along after only a couple of listens. It is somewhat reminscent of oldies style melodic pop, something I think they pull off very well. The music is very simplistic and voices fairly angelic, as was the case in 50s and 60s pop. Although I don't dislike this album it really isn't my taste in music. It is something I would listen to in the background and tap my foot to, but I really don't see myself going out of my way to listen to it. If you are one who enjoys simplistic, melodic, enjoyable music I do not think you will be disapointed. If you are someone like me that enjoys more jam-band style music then you may want to stay away, but if you do not stay away you may see yourself tapping your toe as I do.
Sweet, Summery Goodness.......2005-09-04
There's truth in advertising and then there's Acid House Kings. Those looking for acid house on this disc are sure to come away disappointed. Indie-pop fans, however, will find a wealth of sweet, summery goodness, akin to Scotland's Camera Obscura or fellow Swedes the Concretes. "Sing Along With" may be too cute for some, what with all the hand claps, finger snaps, and tambourine shakes, but Acid House Kings never succumb to self-parody. To paraphrase Johnny Rotten: "They mean it, man."
Why can't US pop be this good?.......2005-08-31
Don't let the group's name fool you. This is breezy and beautiful pop music with intelligent lyrics and glorius melodies that you can truly sing along with. You'll have a hard time getting these songs out of your head. If you like this CD, you won't go wrong if you also buy any of their other CDs.
There is a special edition of "Sing Along with the Acid House Kings" that comes as a 2 disc set; one disc is the regular CD and the second disc is a DVD with videos of all the songs in both the sung versions and karaoke versions. Lyrics are present on the videos to help you sing along but it won't be long until you'll know the lyrics by heart. In addition, there are 3 bonus videos of songs from their other CDs.
The Acid House Kings are the #1 pop group in Sweden and for good reason. If only US pop could be this good.
