Azam Ali, who sings with the duo Vas, has one of the most seductive and effortlessly disciplined altos active on the world stage. Now based in Los Angeles, she is a child of three cultures, Indian, Persian (Iranian) and American, so her music encompasses a triple conundrum. She is joined by Loga Ramin Torkian of Axiom of Choice, who has mastered an impressive array of traditional instruments from Europe, Turkey and his native Iran, and Grammy-winning producer/remixer Carmen Rizzo. The project was inspired by Sufi devotional poems written in Farsi (Persian) or Urdu, which is spoken in much of India and Pakistan. Although interpreted through ultra-modern beats and ambient drones, the traditional material reigns supreme, bringing a sense of adventurous continuity to grooves that, in less inspired hands, could well have emerged slap-dash and prosaic. Unlike most tracks intended for nightclubs, these are as compulsively listenable as they are danceable. --Christina Roden

Product Description
Niyaz is an acoustic electronic project that brings together three prominent musical figures to form an exciting new fusion of traditional Persian music and modern electronics..

Vocalist and composer Azam Ali, one of the founding members of the acclaimed group Vas was born in Iran, raised in India and moved to The United State as a teenager.

Multi instrumentalist and composer Ramin (Loga) Torkian of Axiom of Choice was also born in Iran and moved to the United states as a teenager. His extensive travels combined with his in-depth understanding of Persian music and Indian culture and spirituality have enabled him to cultivate a sound that is extremely authentic, yet can lend itself to the modern framework within which the music is created.

Twice Grammy nominee producer/ remixer Carmen Rizzo is one of the most in demand producer- programmers on the electronic dance scene today. He has worked with artists ranging from Ryuichi Sakamoto, Khaled, Seal, Paul Oakenfold & Cirque Du Soleil bringing his unique approach to beats and electronic textures.

These three veteran masters have all experienced success on their own and have found a new common ground in Niyaz where the mystical poetry of Urdu and Persian Sufi poets of the 14th and 15th century forms the lyrical framework for a fresh new musical adventure.

5 out of 5 stars awesome cd.......2007-07-03

My husband and I heard this playing in a shop while on vacation in Connecticut and rushed to get it - there are no complaints about it.

5 out of 5 stars Iranian Enya's spiritual and sensual songs.......2007-06-15

Niyaz's self-titled debut album is breathtaking. It is no wonder they have been touring for 2 years to support this, and a follow-up is likely to be released next year. From the opening song, "Ghazal" to the closing "Minara",the album is a mystical journey into the desert. The music is an amazing synthesis of the acoustic and electronic.

"Ghazal",the Urdu term for "love song", is deeply rhythmic. It is at once sensual and otherworldly as Azam Ali sings of the Beloved, singing the poetry of the great Sufi mystic,Rumi. "Nahan (The Hidden)",with its urgency, sounds like a perfect accompaniment to a story of forbidden love. Its instrumentation, along with "Allahi Allah" is very Indian in flavor. "Dunya" is mysterious as Azam Ali sings of the impermanence of life. "In the Shadow of Life" sends chills up my spine;it's as if Ali were singing the emptiness of the desert itself. "Dilruba",with its uniquely tuned drums, is a virtual tribal rave-up,along with "Arezou."

Azam Ali is the Iranian Enya. Along with Loga Ramin Tarkian and Carmen Rizzo in Niyaz, she brings together the ancient and modern. If you seek an otherworldly sound, this album is perfect!

5 out of 5 stars NIYAZ (pronounced NEE-ahz) at NMT.......2007-04-23

Niyaz, what can I say but wow! I had the pleasure of seeing them in concert at the NMT campus in New Mexico and they were wonderful. I decided to buy this CD as a result and without a doubt it holds up to the wonderful live performance minus the annoying NMT belly dancers. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone interested in experiencing a unique fusion of tradition Persian / Indian / Arabic music and electronica. The cd is wonderfully composed and its message and beauty transcend the boundaries of language and culture.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely astounding!.......2007-03-26

This has become my favorite CD. Middle eastern rhythms and a vocal that sends me flying -- for me, this is as good as it gets.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling, atmospheric electronica.......2007-03-10

Wow. I've searched and listened to so much music that I hoped would sound like this cd but never did. After slogging through a lot of what passes for sufi/pakistani/urdu electronica, I was SO pleased to hear this incredible cd. Truly entrancing and beautiful stuff. Very well produced, thoughtful, and something you can listen to many times over. Highly recommended, worth every penny; you will love this music.
