It would not be an exaggeration to say that James Lidell's the finest blue eyed soul singer in years, and thankfully he puts his pipes in service of the right stuff. Dude can seriously sing-one minute he reminds you of Otis, the next Sly, a brief detour through Marvin, a serious Prince workout, and then the dude goes and nails a great take on Stevie 's style too. The production is really inventive and subtle. Songs like "Multiply" and "Game for Fools" start out sounding spot-on retro at first, but then little touches sneak into the mix later on that are decidedly modern - the crazy keyboard solo on the former and the drum programming and subtle vocal effects on the latter. What keeps Lidell from massive cheesiness a la Jamiroquai is evident on "The City," the only real link here to Lidell's previous crazy-beats-heavy and effects-laden solo album and his work with Supercollider. Its inclusion here helps ground the album in the present, and along with the brief live clip included in the enhanced portion of the disc, it is clear Lidell is a major talent. -Mike McGonigal

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars.......2007-06-24

I would suggest that those who cite Jamie Lidell's Multiply as "amateurish": 1) perhaps adjust the subwoofer level, and 2) take an educational field trip through the R&B section of a good record store. Absent from their shelves will be the overly-produced, soul-less recordings so many are used to dotting their radio dials. Instead, one may expect to find timeless works like Marvin Gaye's Midnight Love, Otis Redding's Pain In My Heart, and (yes, it's true) Jamie Lidell's Multiply.

Though Multiply breaks no real ground and is not likely to blow many minds, its commitment to the tried and true Motown production style and simple, melodic compositions is a welcome relief from the muck in which top forty radio continues to churn its feet in. Fans of fun, genuine, soulful music will find this album more than enjoyable.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre CD.......2007-05-31

The recording quality sounds a bit amateurish, for example, the bass is very weak compared to the high and mid-range tones. The singing is average and the songs are not memorable except for the "A little bit more." All in all, you pay for that single song.

gr8 cd, I first heard the song from a tv commercial.

I just got hooked to his music..awesome tracks....

really good cd with that funky electronic mix feelings.
my favorite track "A little bit more"

3 out of 5 stars well crafted, but something not quite right about it.......2007-05-16

Is there a soul / R&B scene in the UK? Not sure what I think about this.... Its good, but it seems culturally disingenuous.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Believe The Hype.......2007-05-07

Was more than a bit disappointed with this record. I rarely buy a disc based on one song, but when I read some of the other reviews that raved about it I thought, "I've got an open mind, let's give it a go." I only ended up liking 2-3 songs on the whole thing. Perhaps this is one of those that will grow on me. But it hasn't yet.

I like the Multiplicity CD alot better--it is pure funk. Multiply Additions sings to a different audience--more techno. It's very innovative, though.

ROBBIE GEOGHEGAN's igloomag.com REVIEW ::

(07.04.06) Jamie Lidell has been making waves in the alternative music scene since his first releases on the label that started it all, Warp Records. Muddlin Gear, released in 2000, gained Lidell worldwide renown. His second installment, Multiply moved Lidell closer to the Swing sound. Journalists, reviewers and fans have made many attempts to pigeonhole Lidell's style, to categorize his music into one of the numerous genres that float around on the Warp imprint. Some have compared Lidell to Otis Reading, Stevie Wonder and even Prince. Lidell's blend of soul, jazz and electronic makes for an interesting musical medley to say the least. Yet the latest outing by the British singer/producer only features one piece by Lidell himself, Multiply Additions is basically a remix album but features some masters of the IDM scene to add their slant to Lidell's music.

A former Warp artist, and veteran of the Skam label, Simon Pyke (a.k.a. Freefrom) serves up a twisted funk version of "When I Come Back Around." The track is heavily dancefloor influenced, with some bleep techno echo's and a warped synth solo. The raw lyrics secreted together with some slippery sample mixing makes for a track which bleeds funk with a big beat undercurrent. Served up next on Multiply Additions are Four Tet, offering up their computerisation of "The City." As with Freeform's remix, the soul element of Lidell's original remains an elemental component of Four Tet's version; but now digital glitch and clipped up beeps are laminated over to a 30th century version of Lidell's original score. Techno giant and godfather Luke Vibert offers up a slicked out synth driven mix of "A Little Bit More." A track with a very pop feel, when it comes to vocal tone, layered over with a primitive electro chord line dissected by the bassy chorus to create a rendition with an addictive personality. Yet, the remix seems to smack of a lack of effort. Vibert's version, although having solid elements, lacks a substance that becomes more and more noticeable as the track develops leaving the listener disappointed on the merit and quality of the artist's past expeditions. Mocky gives a remix that is pretty much uninspired, a track that appears frightened to stray from Lidell's original leaving a timid and uninteresting result.

The album picks up again as Matthew Herbert steps into the fray to give the listener two bonus track remixes. Firstly Herbert turns his hand to "Multiply" with Herbert's "Hoedown Bump Instrumental," a quirky shuffling track with an unmistakable clever playfulness reminiscent of the Doctor Rockitt days. Next the old guard experimenter puts his own spin on "A Little Bit More." Once more Herbert teases the original, slowly building up his boyish melodies and plinks. Yet, Herbert's second remix effort pales in comparison to his first. His take on "A Little Bit More," quickly erodes any listener's interest as the track develops but fails to advance.

The album's final track, the Mara Carlyle Ukulady Mix of "Game for Fools" sums up the LP. All the mixes are interesting, but in many respects they stuck too rigidly to Lidell's soul style. Whether or not this is a bad thing is fully open to debate, but in this reviewers opinion the remixers seemed to be hampered when it came to turning their electronic stylings to Lidell's music. This is not to say that the remixes on Multiply Additions are not of worth, although the Mocky take on "What's The Use" is a let down. But, there is a feeling that if the artists had let their own style become more dominant a much more interesting album would be the result. Further listens to the LP do not open up new doorways; they in fact take away from many of the tracks, such as Vibert's remix which on first hearing seems like a good spin on the Lidell's original but sadly becomes dull on further spins.

Quite simply, this album is not especially good. It is by no means an awful release, but it has nothing outstanding as one may have hoped. The premise of the album is a tried and tested formula, artists trying their hand at a different genre, but it is poorly executed on this release. Few of the mixes ring true, others falter after a couple of hearings, others are just plain bad. This album is one to scratch off from the Summer CD spending lists.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to Multiply.......2006-06-16

I'd only heard of Jamie Lidell when I heard his album Multiply for the the first time - and since I heard that, I've been dying for a bit more. I checked out his earlier stuff and found mostly incomprehensible elctronica, truly awful stuff. Needless to say, this is much better.

To start with, all of the tracks from Multiply have really catchy tunes. On this album, the tunes remain but in many cases have been beefed up immensely. "When I come Back Around (Freeform Reform)" has a huge thumping baseline, perfect for a club or just grooving at home. The Gonzalez version of Multiply is complemented nicely by piano. The first live track - You Got Me Up - is also a lot of fun.

In fact the only track that I didn't like is the Hoedown Remix of Multiply. It's a bizarre, strange little thing that doesn't seem to borrow much from the original tune. It got on my nerves originally but I enjoy it now. (Even if I don't want to listen to Herbert's other tunes).

If you haven't heard Jamie Lidell, this isn't the place to start; you need to check out Multiply immediately. But if you've heard Multiply and crave more, I would absolutely encourage you to purchase this, because it really doesn't retread the same ground, despite being a remix album.

    3 out of 5 stars A lucky-packet of treats for SASH! fans.......2007-02-09

SASH! might be lacking in depth somewhat when compared to his trance contemporaries like ATB or Matt Darey, but nonetheless his style is uplifting and accessible. Here he just manages to scrape together a "greatest hits" compilation, with 9 hit singles, lots of remixes and a few throwaway tracks for good measure.

Of the two discs, the first is a collection of remastered radio cuts, the highlights of which are "Adelante", "Mysterious Times", "With My Own Eyes" and "La Primavera". Included as well are non-radio cuts from previous albums like Trilenium, such as "Together Again". Personally, I would have liked to have seen "Show Me The Right Way" included as well, but alas. This first disc is topped off with an extensive, 17-minute megamix by Oliver Momm, notable for including a bassline-version of "Just Around The Hill".

The second disc is a more club-orientated collection of remixes, mixed again by Oliver Momm. Although not as accessible as the first disc, it nonetheless will appeal to more serious clubbers and has notable highlights such as ATB's mix of "Colour The World" and Roy Malone's campy take on "With My Own Eyes". Doug Laurent's version of "Just Around The Hill" is a disappointment and isn't as enjoyable as the mix that appears on the first disc. It's also rather cheap and cheeky of them to include the Future Breeze mix of "Encore Une Fois" on both discs. Did they think we wouldn't notice?

Overall, an enjoyable experience. Nothing profound, occasionally cheesy, but undeniably fun.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sounds I've heard coming out or Europe!!.......2003-03-14

This CD is just awesome! I've been into the Euro party scene for 8 years now and I've been listening to Sash for the last 6 years, and this album has all the songs I like the most. I thought the original Trilenium CD I bought in England 3 years ago was the best until this one came out. The bottom line: if you're gonna buy only 1 Sash CD, make it this one! It'll be worth it =)

5 out of 5 stars Great Party CD!.......2002-12-28

This CD is great at saving a dull party. Awesome and very in sync to dance too. Lots of Bass. I would recommend this to anyone!

4 out of 5 stars What Eurodance should be!.......2002-08-07

If the sweet hooks and vocals on this collection don't move you, you must not have a pulse. Sash's arrangement of synth and smooth beats mixed with the unmistakable harmonies of his honey-voiced female vocals really recall the ultra-produced danceable pop of 70's eurodance of bands like ABBA. A guilty pleasure all the way.

4 out of 5 stars A good collection of hits, the remixes are OK.......2002-01-25

A great collection of Sash songs. The first CD is more than 70 minutes of minutes of music, which is cool. The remixes, on CD Two, are a bit lacking, however. Don't be fooled into thinking they are full-length tracks --- it is a remix "combination", with each remix being between about one and four minutes. They do offer some neat interpretation of the original singles, though. Overall, this is a very good album. I think Sash is one of the most varied and talented DJs/composers out there.

Are you allright? Have you ever heard this song? It's a big heap of sish! The girls are ugly , can't sing and their accent!!!HORRIBLE! The whole song is meaningless with an extremely awful rytm. It's a pity that such talentless ugly girls from Romania can get fame, while here in Hungary extraodinarily talented artists can't pay their rent. Will it ever change?

4 out of 5 stars The Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum).......2003-06-19

The fact that this was a massive European hit only further proves that ANYONE can obtain chart success on the other side of the Atlantic. That being said, "The Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum)" exceeds the stupidity of "Macarena" and "Cotton Eyed Joe", which is probably why the U.S. has yet to bring the single into their market. It's so horribly ridiculous, so awfully written, so disgustingly performed, yet long after you've hit the stop button you find yourself singing "touch my bum/this is life". A 10-year-old could come up with this on a simple Casio keyboard- a generic 4/4 disco beat, a few synth rips here and there. A Casio may not allow you to digitalize vocals, and it may be difficult to find awful singers with heavy Romanian accents, but the general formula is ready and available for anyone to utilize. Welcome to novelty pop music- 2003-style!

4 out of 5 stars A fine slice of fluffy, meaningless novelty pop!.......2003-03-10

It doesn't get more ridiculous than this! These girls really aren't musically inclined at all, but the song does serve a good purpose. With all that is going on in today's world, and with all of the anti-war music being produced, the 'Cheeky Song' is a nice, temporary escape from all of the emotional depth and heavy lyrics. This song is easy and fun to sing-a-long to, and is a great way to just relax. It's a no-brainer, and sometimes that's just what people need. Don't expect this song to be released in the U.S, though. Americans aren't really into this kind of stuff, and there really isn't room in the U.S. music market for the Cheeky Girls. Canada gets a version of this retail single in a few weeks, and I'll probably buy it. This single was huge in Britain, but a big flop in Australia. Hopefully Canadians will take to the Cheeky Song!

          Album Description

There are few more unlikely choices for a soul hero than Jamie Lidell; he's British, Caucasian, and a former electronica experimentalist. Nevertheless, his solo debut, Multiply, finds the young R&B maven alternately channeling Otis Redding, Prince, and Stevie Wonder, while adding a distinctly modern, admittedly Midnite Vultures-era Beck-tinged flair. Whatever its provenance, Multiply is one of the best R&B albums of the mid-2000s. This single of the same name is lifted from the album and features the Edit version backed with the Herbert's Hoedown Bump Mix, Hot Chip's Mouth Mix and Gozales Mix. Warp. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic album.......2007-02-27

Wow! What a great find this was. Every track is just awesome and the album is not repetitive, there is a lot of variety. This is one of the few albums I have that I can listen to over and over and enjoy it every time. The production and vocals on this album are top notch.

4 out of 5 stars Music for those of us who like to take it easy..........2003-06-09

I've been enjoying this album for quite a while, so I figured I should put in my two cents...

So at last, we have another duo to compete against the awesomely wicked Everything but the Girl, also known as Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn. The latest to enter the ring of chilled-laid-back-grooves-with-lustful-female-vocals is Andy Cato (of the equally awesome Groove Armada) and Rachel Foster.

The album as a whole seems to work very well together. It's put together in the same format that Groove Armada uses: a medium-paced intro into a slower-than-honey-dripping-down-a-wall second or third track, then to a faster-paced tune, and then back and forth for the rest of the CD. But what an intro! This is a stronger first song than Everything but the Girl's last few albums and two of Groove Armada's... Well cummon, Groove Armada's 'Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)' had 'Suntoucher' as its intro. Just try and beat THAT.

'Best Days of our Lives' is a soft and sweet track to put in between 'I'll Be There' and '21st Century'. '21st Century' is really an oddity to the rest of the music on this CD. Andy Cato seems to have sampled a rough drum pattern from an all too familiar record called 'Dooms Night' by Azzido da Bass. Truth is, this doesn't sound good at all!! I also can't respect a song whose lyrics go 'Dooh dooh dooh doody doodoo dooda dumm' for a good portion of the melody. Kylie Minogue rip off? I think not. It's much worse.

The middle of the CD is where the real meat comes in. My two favorite tracks are the title track 'Pursuit of Happiness' and of course 'Subway'. These two songs in themselves are good enough for the small price tag. From tracks 9 to 13, however, you might as well just turn off your CD player. Either that or just leave 'em on to put yourself to sleep to. They're all rather dull-sounding.

          >>> 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. The artwork and design is something to envy, and so is Rachel Foster's voice. I've been able to figure out why Andy Cato only functions as one-half of the Groove Armada. Still... it's a rather enjoyable CD, especially for early mornings and lazy weekend afternoons.

          5 out of 5 stars Funk-Lounge meets Techno.......2003-04-01

Brilliant. Being an older listener I found this album re-freshingly new and exciting. In an age of covers and re-makes it's great to hear something relatively unique. Great to hear Cato's "intelligent" sequencing. In a world of 'plastic music gone mad' this provided much relief, a wonderful display of taste and restraint. Jericho is hauntingly beautful, a hook line to die for. Overall the mood swings on this album are subtle, dance tracks (21st Century/Into the sun) blend nicely with the more subdued numbers (Angel/I'll be there for you). 21st Century is the best dance song I have heard in an age. Congratulations Weekend Players - superb. My recommendation: buy it now, put it on, turn it up, relax - enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Never leaves my CD player!.......2003-03-28

I can't begin to say how great this CD is. I...I do not regret purchasing this CD a bit! We went to their concert and had the "Best Day(s) of Our Life". This is the one and only CD that I would like to bring with me if I am stranded on an island.

Rachel Foster has a smooth, blue-ish, sexy voice. Some people said that she sounded like Sade, but her music is more upbeat and Electronica. Sensual and sensational. If you want to treat yourself after a long week, you don't need to look any further.

4 out of 5 stars PURSUIT FOR PLEASURE.......2003-03-18

The music on this debut album from Groove Armada's Andy Cato and singer Rachel Foster brings to memory a lost album of MPEOPLE, Everything But the Girl or a SADE electronica album never made. It's soft, hard, dance & chill-out oriented and like the group name tells you... WEEKEND PLAYERS is in fact a Weekend cd that you would care to listen after a long days work, a frantic night out at the club or to sit back, relax and enjoy the beats.

This song, Possession, is one of the very few songs that has NOTHING bad to say about it. This is the most beautiful song I have ever heard and I listen to it every day! My favourite all time song. Definately.
