Danish group Aqua arrived on the international pop scene in 1997 with their multimillion-selling smash single "Barbie Girl." Developing a formula pioneered by their successful Swedish rivals Ace of Base and Whigfield, the band demonstrated on this album that they were more than just one-hit wonders (at least in markets outside America). Skillfully crafted for instant, easily digestible consumption, Aquarium is equally entertaining at the club or at home. It's jammed full of bubblegum pop classics, ranging from the Eurodisco opening track "Happy Girls & Boys" to the Madonna-esque ballad "Turn Back Time." A treat for all pop lovers, it is an album that will both entertain and surprise. --John Galilee

5 out of 5 stars Aqua rocks........2007-06-04

Aqua the Europop group from Denmark. They bursted out onto the late 90's Dance music scene with Barbie Girl. But There are other songs on Aquarium that are awesome like Roses Are Red and Turn Back Time. Roses Are Red highlights Rene Dif's awesome unique voice, Just because his voice is really deep doesn't mean he can't sing . He CAN sing He's the Villan where as Lene is the good girl. Speaking of Lene her voice is really sexy to listen to. As She is very sexy. Both her and Rene's voices makes the songs unique and fun to listen to. Aqua are an awesome group. Claus and Soren do a great job with the music itself. and Soren's backing vocals are very good both here and on Aquarius. Aqua's second and final album. So all in all Aquarium is the best dance album. And Aqua is the best Dance group of the 90's. I wish thier career together lasted longer though. Highly Recommended for Rene and Lene's awesome vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Aqua's not all wet.......2007-05-31

This is a wonderful, bubbly pop CD. It's simply ear candy that you can just put in the player and hit play. No urge to skip, just listen. The bouncier, quicker tunes include: Happy Boys and Girls, My Oh My, Barbie Girl [of course, it's the major radio hit off this CD], Doctor Jones, Lollipop, Roses are Red, Calling You. That's the list of just the BEST songs. The others are merely less good; they're no slouches. In summary, this is simply an excellent light listen that will have the listener bobbing along with the beat and humming the melodies at work. If your coworkers can't deal with it, they're just grouches.

5 out of 5 stars A joke nobody seems to get..........2007-05-18

Aqua (and its copy-cat band Toy Box) is deeply based in satire. People keep giving this album for percieved "dirty lyrics" and "bad morals" however songs like Barbie Girl are obviously making fun of the misogyny and sex that saturate American media. IF you are willing to look past the poppy mood of this album it actually has a very amusing, intelligent point behind it. However if you are easily insulted or are buying this for someone under the age of 12 or 13 I would strongly suggest you put some consideration into whether or not you want to take a risk. Overall great CD!

4 out of 5 stars the good album.......2007-02-23

hi i think that this cd is the balm . if you look closely at barbie girl its not the most positive message but it has a great beat

5 out of 5 stars Bubblegum Techno Perfection.......2007-02-20

A guilty pleasure that is guaranteed to perk you up. From the opening track, you can't help but "be happy." But behind the cartoony silliness are simply well-written pop songs that are about as catchy as can be, and not all of them thumping techno either. Turn Back Time is the standout song that truly demonstrates the versatility of this little group of Euro Dance Pop masters. Overall, a super fun listening experience. I'm "calling you now" to give a listen. Many smiles to follow.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Children's Favorites a solid purchase.......2006-03-09

This CD mostly delivered what was expected of it. The only critique I have is that some of the tempos could have been cleaner, and that it should be cross-referenced by the other composers besides J. S. Bach.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect package.......2005-10-23

This is the most wonderful collection to have on 1 CD. Children from birth on up can benefit from this musical collage.
Songs from the "Nutcracker" are familiar and comfortable for many children. What child wouldn't love "March of the Tin Soldiers?"
Selections from Saint-Saens' "Carnival of the Animals" is a must in my creative movement library. Every child should be exposed to this music. Well,I believe every age should be.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Introduction to the Classics.......2003-03-11

With total playing time clocking in at 78:04 minutes of music, you'll be paying about 6-cents/minute, which is a better bargain than long distance phone calls, and often more rewarding!

This disc is far superior than most other "Classics for Kids"-type recordings I've sampled for a number of reasons:

1) This album was expertly engineered. The production quality on this disc is first-rate from start to finish with crisp, clear sound.

2) The pieces were expertly picked. There is wonderful sonic variety here, spanning hundreds of years of wonderful melodies. There are orchestral pieces, harpsichord pieces, solo piano, and a piano concerto, capped off with Saint-Seans whimsical Carnival of the Animals. What kid (or adult) wouldn't love that?

3) The performances are, without exeption, expert! The pieces were definately screened for quality as well as content. Many are simply a joy to behold. Walter Klein is a particular stand-out, almost giddily prancing through Schumann's pieces. Believe it or not, he sounds even more impressive when backed up by the always inspiring Minnesota Orchestra on Mozart's Piano Concerto #17.

In short, this album is a great album even before you factor in the great price. You and your children are almost guaranteed to enjoy every 6-cents worth!

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Album Description

Unexpect's wild musical adventures are fuelled by a mish-mash of creative styles - black, death, progressive and classical metal. The band's delivery is an awe-inspiring adrenaline rush in vein of Mr. Bungle, The Jesus Lizard and if Cirque du Soleil went black metal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Crazy avantgarde stuff.......2007-01-12

This album is a mixture of death and black metal, progressive, jazz, classical music and much more. Song structure is torn to pieces - so much that it can be compared to Mr Bungle or Fantomas - but there is one difference: this one makes sense. Material is melodic (in a pretty sick way), creative and furious. There are 7 people in the band. As I said, lot of stuff can be heard on this album. All sorts of vocals pop up from everywhere, since there are 4 vocalists in the band. The band mambers' playing skills are impressive. Every note is there where they wanted it to be. Although their music is chaotic, these guys know exactly what they are doing. Atmosphere and emotion on the album is pretty unique. Violin, saxophone and clarinet gave a big contribution to it. The only band I can really compare them to in conceptual sense is the band called Abonos. Lyrics are a mess too. They are mainly in English, but there is one song in Hungarian and there are some backward French parts.
Amazon recommended this album to me and I'm very grateful for that, because I would never found this band out otherwise. This is the music for everybody's ears. I strongly advise you to hear the samples before you order.
This album is my avantgarde metal favorite for 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Yes...!.......2006-09-13

It isn't very common these days for an album to really surprise me and stop me in my tracks on account of it being so bizarre. Fortunately, I'm glad to say that this is one of those albums, and it's a very refreshing feeling. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I possess a sufficiently surreal vocabulary and a vivid enough imagination to properly translate this aural mindf**k into words.

"In A Flesh Aquarium" is a schizophrenic genre trip... only with all involved genres being turned inside out and twisted beyond any form of immediate recognition. There are possible points of reference, but they are sort of vague - certain moments remind me heavily of what Maudlin of the Well's experiments in amalgamation might have sounded like if Toby Driver and the guys had recorded them during a tour through oblivion instead of a journey through the astral realm of dreams or whatever the hell they were doing; others bring to mind what Ram-Zet might sound like if they dropped some of the melancholy and added about 200% theatrical adventurism; moments that bring to mind classic Russian folk music; and stuff that really does sound like the Cirque du Soleil gone black metal. There are even moments that remind me of Mr. Bungle and Primus, and very specific excerpts in certain songs that wouldn't have much trouble passing for The Dresden Dolls.

The vocals are all over the place. Guitarists/vocalists Syriak and Artagoth trade off raging screams, black metal-ish shrieks, and death metal-ish growls. Occasionally they will let up for some dark spoken narrative, and sometimes to harmonize in odd fashion with female vocalist Leilindel, who by the way is very adept and delivers in a voice that's scattered all over the spectrum. Very emotive, very fluid.

The arrangements are unreal... blistering metal will give way to jazzy acoustic pieces, which will give way to classical interludes that slowly build into a heavily orchestrated version of something you might hear at a circus, which will in turn diminish into a darkly ambient stretch of atmosphere... and just like that will drop back into an unrelenting metal assault, only to be broken by a solo female vocal piece backed by a cinema-scopic electronic canvas, which will again drop into spastic metal which slowly morphs into a Waltz-like section... and on, and on, and on. Dynamics are key. I'm not talking soft-loud-soft-loud-soft-build-build-explode type dynamics prevalent among bands like Neurosis and Isis, nor am I talking about the effective yet somewhat predictable genre-hopping of bands like Mr. Bungle, Estradasphere, and Tub Ring... the stuff here is everywhere all at once while never being in any one particular place at any particular time. This is an ultimate example of unbridled artistic expression wrapped up in musical form.

The playing is phenomenal and frenetic, and ChaotH's bass work especially deserves special mention. The keyboards come in a variety of different styles, from acoustic piano melodies to atmospheric backgrounds, and even all out electronic soundscapes like the tracks 'Silence_011010701' and 'The Shiver - Another Dissonant Chord', the latter being complemented by Leilindel's erratic vocals. The drumming is fast, technical, and diverse, but I have to say that the guy can get a bit out of control with the double bass at times. Violins courtesy of Le Bateleur (who has since left the band I believe) add a nice touch, but nothing really show-stopping save for a few prominent and well-placed lines that pop up occasionally.

"In A Flesh Aquarium" is turbulent, dissonant, chaotic, tranquil, somber, beautiful, theatrical, and WAY out in left field.

I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Collection.......2003-12-31

I have heard many, many classical "mood" collections, and this is one of the best, with many surprise selections.
It is consistently restful and calming.
I recommend it highly.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exciting performance.......2007-04-16

This was one of my favorite record albums when I was young. It was a pleasure to introduce to my grandchildren. MOST important is the narrative that starts each track. Many of the other versions do NOT include this. They were my most favorite memories, and the children still resond to them today.

5 out of 5 stars A no - brainer.......2002-04-16

Simply, the best. The best performances, the best sound, the best narration. The best. 'Nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......2001-11-22

The other reviewer is off base. If you don't want narration get a recording without it. With narration or not, Saint-Saens chose his animals and gave his musical interpretation of their appearance. Children can enjoy the verses although Hugh Downs does not have as much fun with them as some narrators. This is a great CD if you want to develop a child's interest in classical music.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful music, but too much narrative........2000-09-03

This "unwashed" recording has the exhilarating tonality of a live performance which many modern digitals lack. Saint-Saen's "Carnival of the Animals" was my 4-year-old's favourite, followed by Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and Gounod's "Funeral March of a Marionette".

Odgen Nash's verses, written to accompany Saint-Saen's work are too clever for young children, who will miss out on the word-play and puns. Also, they tend to interpret the experience too much, which interferes with their imaginations. If a child prefers to make-belief in dragons, for example, as opposed to lions, then there is all of Hugh Down's recitations to sit through and ignore first, since the tracks do not separate the narrative from the music.

Nonetheless, this is one of the better classical recordings I've heard geared specifically for children.

3 out of 5 stars Bad recording quality..........2007-01-20

For the music it has ... 5 stars.

For the quality the tracks has been recordered .... 1 stars.

For this kind of music, quality sound should be excellent, almost. This CD has a bad remastering quality.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Romantic Background.......2005-09-11

This music is great to accompany a candlelight dinner, or relax with at bedtime. Highly recommended for those who enjoy soft music played quietly in the background.

5 out of 5 stars All-Star Lineup of Soothing, Inspiring Piano.......2003-11-03

What a collection of piano greats, Ashkenazy, Lupu, Roge, et al, playing the likes of Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Schurbert, et al.

The charm and magic of this is exceptional. Romantic for one or candlelight with someone special.

Outstanding!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Like a box of your favorite chocolates..........2003-05-01

This is a really well-thought-out selection of quieter Baroque, Classical and Romantic works, played primarily on strings but not exclusively. Some of the works are transcribed to other instruments--oboe in the case of a Bach harpsichord concerto, guitar instead of solo cello in the Bouree. This CD includes a lovely, lilting work by Pergolesi, who lived from 1710 to 1736. His wistful and playful music always provokes a happy-sad reaction from me because it's so beautiful and there is of course so little of Pergolesi due to his tragically short life.

This is not just a CD to play while you are alone in your bath, as the cover suggests. It's a nice evening wind-down CD and a great Sunday morning brunch album. It's one of those you can take on plane trips, play anytime you want something quiet yet uplifting. This is a fantastic selection of works, like a box of favorite chocolates only...no guilt and no calories. Sweet!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Classical Spectrum .......2005-03-21

These cd's are a great set of varied classical music. Pavane is my favorite. Additionally, Classical Chillout 2 offers theme music from Harry Potter and it is very well done.
