Shirley Manson (now of Garbage) could be the perkier kid sister of Siouxsie Sioux on, "Suffocate Me," then masquerade as vintage Deborah Harry on, "King of the World." Producers (and Talking Heads alumni) Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth are along for extra period authenticity. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Front to back, awesome album.......2007-07-05

I have owned this album for YEARS! It is one of the rare albums that is truly enjoyable for the entire album. I have let it loop several times before taking it out!

3 out of 5 stars OK, But Shirley Did It Better With Garbage.......2007-05-03

Competent but unchallenging hard pop in the Cheap Trick vein but not as exciting as that band at its peak. Unlike Garbage - by which this band will inevitably be compared - Angelfish uses the classic guitar/bass/drums/vocal lineup, no electronics no keyboards, just simple guitar chords, workmanlike drummimg, rumbling bass and Shirley Manson's appealing voice. Nothing earth-shattering, just a clean, tough, pleasant sound.

4 out of 5 stars Somwhere between Blondie and Concrete Blonde...........2007-04-16

Shirley Manson's pre-Garbage garage-rock outfit could just as easily have become her catapult into the limelight.

It leans much more to the rock side, but Manson's alluring whispers and vulnerable rock goddess wails work just as well here. It's obvious early on in this disc that Manson has her own distict style, though it builds from the dark gothic tones of Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano in "Suffocate Me" to the restrained vibrato of the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde in "King of the World" to echoes of Blondie's Deborah Harry in the melodic phrasing of "Heartbreak to Hate" and "The End."

If Angelfish is to be compared to Garbage, the more straightforward punk-ish vibe of the two more recent Garbage albums ("BeautifulGarbage" and "Bleed Like Me") is the most obvious place to start. Add some electronic blips and polish the production a bit, and "Mummy Can't Drive," "King of the World" and "Tomorrow Forever" would be right at home on either.

But it's nice to hear Shirley Manson's smooth seductive voice against rougher, more stripped-down rock - and something that all Garbage fans should hear.

5 out of 5 stars A Work of sheer genius!!.......2007-01-28

Lets just say that this cd is one of the most entertaining ones that I have EVER heard. 10 choice tracks, stunningly beautiful singing, majestic guitar riffs, a solid rhythm section and the songs..... wow, are these amazing or what! Glorious melodies, heartfelt lyrics, yeah, anybody who doesn't like this cd must have cloth ears and be tone deaf!

5 out of 5 stars "Some things just carry on like you...".......2006-07-17

Shirley Manson's first band Angelfish is a great, fun disc. But thank god Shirley moved on to front my favorite band in the galaxy, Garbage. Angelfish is not a horrible band, just not as good as Garbage. Shirley's voice is sexy, haunting, and earth-shattering on this record. Standout tracks include: Suffocate Me, Sleep with Me, The Sun Won't Shine, You Can Love Her, Tomorrow Forever, and The End. The rest of the tracks are great as well of course there is always at least one dud on an album and that song is King of the World. It's a good thing this album is cool because I did not know what to expect, I just knew Shirley was the lead singer of this band (I love her voice so much!) The lyrics are surprisely good even though Shirley admitted she didn't write one song on this album, anyways I highly recommend checking this pre-Garbage disc out, you can't go wrong with that voice, rock on Shirley!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Manson..........2002-09-14

An excellent single, with Garbage's Shirley Manson on vocals, her voice already promising greatness. Suffocate Me is a great listening experience, with a dark yet erotic undertone, this is just a taste of the fantastic album. A must for any Garbage fan!

4 out of 5 stars An interesting album from an extremely interesting group.......1999-08-18

Why And Also The Trees have never been able to make it to America I don't know, because their music is some of the most beautiful and complex out there. Anyone who enjoys the music of the Cure, Depeche Mode, or the Church will be very pleased with AATT. Searching out their hard-to-find imports is very rewarding though and 'Angelfish' is no exception to a long list of great releases. To those familiar with their work, this album will come across a little differently. Instead of the dark forests and lonely towns conjured up in their previous efforts, Angelfish leaves you with the feeling that you're listening to some apocalyptic lounge music. The bass thumps and the guitar twangs in familiar AATT fashion, but the songs, a good mix of vocal & instrumental tracks, work in a very modern setting with an eye towards the everyday tragedies of modern life. They may be working with a different feel, but the album is still AATT in every aspect. This album was my introduction to them and I'd be happy to give it to any of my friends for a listen to this great, and very overlooked, band.
