Beautifully crafted and produced, When It Falls is a fitting follow-up to Zero 7's 2001 platinum hit Simple Things. Reintroducing several of their debut's guest vocalists, the band continue to meld subtle orchestration, elegant jazz and easy-going West Coast soul and folk, creating a sound so tasteful it makes Morcheeba sound like Napalm Death. The album opens with the appropriately titled "Warm Sound," where long-time collaborator Mozez delivers his spacey soul over a quivering flute and funky keys. Later he reappears for the string-swept lullaby "Over Our Heads." Next up is newcomer Tina Dico who lends the softest of vocals to "Home," where quietly chiming guitars rise to a careful collision of brass, and "The Space Between," a techno-update of 70s folk-jazz. Much the same service is provided by Sophie Barker on "Passing By" and "In Time," which recalls the sweet innocence of early James Taylor. It's left to Sia Furler to add extra color, her slight rasp lending character to both "Somersault" and "Speed Dial No 2." Throughout, the band introduce a welter of instruments and effects, sometimes approaching the psychedelic, though they're keen to avoid an over-technological coldness--the squeak of finger on guitar string is never far away. For fans of Simple Things, it's a real treat. --Dominic Wills

If your a fan of Zero7............2007-07-05
I put it in and I was hoping it sounded like the Zero7 I love, and it did. I play it all the time and get compliments from people who have no idea who the band is. Zero7 is a staple for me to bring life back into perspective when things get a little hectic.
"When It Falls" Lifts You Up.......2007-05-15
The helmsmen of Zero 7, Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker, got their start engineering and mixing music for groups like Pet Shop Boys, Radiohead, and Sneaker Pimps. Their ear for sweet soul sounds and eye for under-produced trip-hop enticed a host of collaborators to join them for their debut album, Simple Things, an almost unreal work of chillout genius that has since gone platinum.
Their sophomore work, "When It Falls," features some of the same voices found on the first record, as well as all of that record's gentle genius. Bittersweet and beautiful, "When It Falls" shows us that even the softest blow can pack a whallop.
This record's delicate notes blow from winds of change, moving music that is mostly about the beautifully dear delerium to be found both in change and in remaining watchfully still. Tina Dico's delicate vocals color gold and red the autumnal ballads of "Home" and "The Space Between." Sia Furler croons gold summer spirit into the over-green forests of "Somersault" and "Speed Dial No. 2." Mozez's yearning voice gives sweet sap to the springtime blooms of "Warm Sound" and "Morning Song." And the incomparable Sophie Barker chills the soul with her wintery whispers in the dark and delightful "Passing By" and "In Time." It's a pastiche of passions, a rainbow arc of moods, the colorful shattering point between stormy rains and nourishing sun.
An album that strikes the heart without resorting to cheese, that celebrates the sensuality of sorrow and the tug of joy, "When It Falls" proves that maybe the man was right when he sang "everything is beautiful in its own way." At any rate, if anything's beautiful, it's this album.
It will change you.......2007-03-18
This album is responsible for turning my musical taste in a different direction. After years of banging my head to the loudest, fastest, and darkest death metal, I discovered it was giving me a headache.
A freind loaned me this ZERO7 CD, and after the last track had played, I knew I had found a new genre to call home.
If you can listen to this CD without replaying any of the tracks at least once, it would be a first. The artist's voices, the instruments, and the rythems take you on a winding road that you'll want to travel over and over again. I have now listened to this CD for over a year now, and whenever I pop it into the CD player, it still feels like I'm coming home. Instead of headaches, I find myself totally relaxed. (You can't review a ZERO7 album without using the word "relax").
Rainbow of sounds and colors.......2006-12-26
For fans of new age and soothing, interesting and innovative music Zero 7 fits the bill perfectly. This British band and its style are classified as Downtempo, Trip hop, Ambient music and as Acid jazz, to me they are simply a big mish mash of goodness.
The first time that I listened to this album was while soaking in a hot tub with herbal bath salts. I don't know what melted the stress off my bones better, the hot water or the music, reaching deep within. I was mesmerized, especially the first time I heard the song "Somersault", the music, part ambient, with soft female vocals and melancholic undertones stood out to me in a sea of songs in a long time. The music is cool and relaxing, soothing and warm, sensual and dreamy and still a bit funky. I can always rely on Zero 7 and the magic their sounds produce whether I'm tired or lazy or in the mood for good reading or writing music.
Some songs are sang by men and some by women, a nice combination as they make for a more interesting cd versus those that sound like a constant sting of melody barely changed by any dynamics. Since they use different artists in collaboration on each cd, blending their style with the artists own uniqueness creates a whole new level of higher expectation that always comes through when you buy their CD's.
Related artists for those unfamiliar wth Zero 7 or those who want more of this style would be Air, Thievery Corportaion, Massie Attack, Morcheeba, Tosca, Royksopp, Radiohead, Moby, Underworld, Goldfrapp and Apex Twin just to name a few.
This album is great for taking a bath, getting a massage or simply sitting down with a nice hot beverage and melting stress and winter chills away. Totally beautiful and dearly loved by me, it's one of those albums I would buy for every person I know if I needed a good present in a pinch.

Enter The Chill-Zone.......2006-12-18
I'm relatively new to certain styles of music; but I do experiment from time to time and check out new genres and bands. Zero 7 was recommended to me by a couple of people, so I picked up "When It Falls", and have been very pleased with the results.....
Zero 7 play a very spacey, stylish and mood-altering form of ambient techno that is very alluring and relaxing. Paired with a variety of singers (who mostly croon in a breathless, low-key manner) this album features washes of sound and atmosphere accentuated with mellow guitar passages here and there, and is very textural in it's approach. It sounds a bit like Enya meets Moby. Excellent chill-out music when you need to relax and kick back after a long day at work. I'm interested in hearing more from this band.

Deeply satisfying music.......2002-04-03
I first heard Maslanka's Symphony No. 2, 3rd Movement performed by the Wichita State University Band several years ago and immediately fell in love with it. I've somehow managed to damage the CD and I'm gladly replacing it today. I highly recommend this CD not only for the incredible music itself, but also for what I feel is the intensity of the performance, the strength of the soloists and ensemble, and the deep sense of soul they bring to their music. If you're looking for a flawless performance, buy something by the Eastman Wind Ensemble or one of their many equals. If you haven't performed music of this type and caliber, it's easy to nit-pick the infrequent performance problems on this recording. If you're fortunate enough to have been part of a close-knit ensemble and enjoy modern wind music, this is a disc you must own.
Child's Garden of Dreams.......2000-11-02
This pretty much is a must have for anyone serious about good band music. A Child's Garden of Dreams is probably one of the best pieces of band literature ever written. Very fun to play also.

"Falls" but doesn't rise.......2005-01-13
The sophomore slump hits Zero 7 in their second album, "When It Falls." Sam Hardaker and Henry Binns create a fairly pleasant mesh of downtempo jazz and trip-hop ambience, but their major failure is monotony -- there are few highs or lows in this pleasant if unmemorable album.
The mellow montony of the well-named "Warm Sound" sets off the tone of the album, echoed in the vague "Over Our Heads," spacey title track, and mellowly uninviting "In Time." Unfortunately, these are the most likely to send listeners to sleep -- musically, they possess plenty of beauty and sweetness, and have a distinct polish. But they don't have anything that makes you sit up and take notice.
But the less ambient songs display a little more oomph. There are also forays into ambient folkiness in the low-key "Home", the acoustic and the harmonica-electronica of "Look Up." Some pure trip-hop even seeps in with the jazzy "Passing By," with its mellow singing and faint electronica swips and sweeps.
The primary flaw of "When It Falls" is that it neither rises nor falls -- it's more of a straight line with some gentle bumps and dips. It's more downbeat than their debut album, a little more pensive and laid-back. But one particular highlight is the vocals: Sia Furler and Sophie Barker's sensuous voices, as well as the deeper, soulful voice of Mozez.
Zero 7 does well in melding trip-hop and mellow ambience with jazz and folk. If you can wrap your mind around the idea of harmonica and electronica in the same song, it should be right for you. Guitar riffs aren't very impressive. But the string section is the most accomplished and polished, with violins darting in and out of the music against a faint percussion backdrop.
While often relegated to arty makeout music, Zero 7 is pleasant enough, even when not getting cuddly. It's just that in their sophomore album they get a little too mellow for their own good.

A beautiful collection.......2000-12-13
Eileen Farrell was unfamiliar to me before I bought this recording, but since then I have become a dedicated fan. That an opera singer should be able to perform popular songs so convincingly is a wonder in itself, but Miss Farrell's very special style deserves more praise than that. She brings out the inherent mood of each song without a trace of artifice, exploring the emotions in the lyric to the full. Songs like "Where Do You Start", "Gone With The Wind" and "The Shining Sea" have never sounded so sincere and heartbreaking. Robert Farnon's warm strings are a superb foil for Miss Farrell's interpretations. This album may be difficult to obtain, but make the effort if you relish fine songs sung by a master interpreter.

Good way to get to know Gilbert and Sullivan..........2000-06-21
Really now, there is way too much Gilbert and Sullivan in this. Many other people wrote operettas too! Well, there is a little Lehar. But there needs to be more! I thought a little Candide by Bernstein should have been in there too. But the Gilbert and Sullivan excerpts are nothing to be ashamed of. They are done well. A little too operatic. And I just know some of these overtures will delight you. Average recording. Average playing. There's my two cents.

Usually Naxos is hit or miss, but Anthony Rolfe Johnson and Simon Keenlyside pull off a great recording of a great selection of some of Vaughn Williams. Best 7 dollars I ever spent, really. On Wenlock Edge is particularly good, but really its all superb.
Wonderful.......2002-08-28

Kaleidoscope of perfection.......2006-12-26

Warm Sounds.......2006-09-08
"Take me somewhere we can be alone...won't you take me home."
The album cover belies the true beauty and soul calming aspects and seems to focus on a more intellectual soul experience. In fact it is an ambient experience with soft silky moods and sweet dreamy contemplations.
When the heaviness of other electronic creations has me seeking stillness this is what I tend to lean towards. "Warm Sounds" usually starts playing in my head right before I seem to want to listen to this album.
"The Garden" doesn't melt me like this CD can and does, repeatedly. The Garden has a Shaggy Carpet mood and this has a more modern feel with echoes of the past appearing in places.
Somersault reminds me of jumping on a trampoline as a child and then doing a somersault. It has a bouncy comforting feel and melodic appeal.
Over our Heads is a silky downtempo track with comfort intertwined with beauty. Time to curl up into a down comforter with this song, and don't forget your teddy bear. This one is super relaxing and dreamy. I'm a kid again sinking into a happy safe place I can find again in this mood.
"I don't think you love me" feels like a strange start to the next song after you've been lulled into safety. The album then drops a little insecurity into a sexy warm jazz escape.
Spacious dreams and lounge focused relaxation invites you into "When it Falls." As if falling out of a cloud, "The Space Between" does have the feeling of being between earth and sky.
By the time you reach "Look Up" you are probably so relaxed you are on your back looking up at the ceiling and drifting off into dreams. Except, then you suddenly feel like you are about to take an ecstatic journey off into the unknown. Violin wakes you up and sweeping classical waves mingle with guitar.
"In Time" is especially beautiful in the way the music surrounds your brain. It feels like the album cover. The vibrations seem to give you a second form beyond your own. You can almost feel your soul.
"Speed Dial No. 2's" sweet dreamy elements are also somewhat sexy. "I don't need you anymore" sounds like a lie to me. Psychedelic swirls captivate and smooth vibrant textures take over your mind, but never without your permission.
As if you fell asleep, you now awaken to a refreshing "Morning Song" that speaks of a new day and sleepy stay in bed all morning moods. Could someone please bring me breakfast in bed, I have to replay this CD again. "When it Falls" is my favorite Zero 7 album because of the variety of textures all within a consistent mood. Like the comfort of warm blankets and the taste of cinnamon hot chocolate, this melts me into silky moods.
Thank you to the amazing magical friend who introduced me
to this music.
