Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Smooth, downtempo grace flows through the veins of St. Germain, a.k.a. noted French composer-producer Ludovic Navarre. His record is a sensual flow of jazzy textures, Latin rhythms, and bass-ridden beats, hovering on the verge of techno, jazz, or experimental headphone music without tipping its hand too far in any direction. The result is irresistible: class with an edge. --Matthew Cooke

Techno and house music producer Ludovic Navarre is--along with Laurent Garnier, Air and DJ Cam--one of the biggest names in French electronic music of the past decade. His ability to imaginatively blend jazz elements with recent dance-music styles has been demonstrated before, but the seamless quality of this release is stunning. Compared to someone such as Amon Tobin, who obviously (although brilliantly) creates sampled collages, St Germain makes it pleasantly difficult to identify the boundary lines between "live" performance, programmed electronics, and sampled sound. Part of the credit must go to this album's musicians, including Pascal Ohsé, Eduoard Labor, Alexandre Destrez, and Idresse Diop (at least some of whom are francophone Africans making their mark in the post-colonialist European Afro-jazz scene). The CD's opening piece, "Rose Rouge," is centered on an edgy piano rhythm and a looped vocal fragment from jazz singer Marlena Shaw. The dub-inflected "Montego Bay Spleen" features Jamaican jazz guitarist Ernest Ranglin, who offers a clean, warm, neo-Wes Montgomery style filtered through his years as a session musician-architect of ska and reggae. And Edouard Labor's raspy flute tone on "So Flute," its role as much rhythmic as melodic, adds a Latin flavor to the mix. "Sure Thing," another high point of the release, is built around a vocal and guitar sample from blues guitarist John Lee Hooker, borrowed from the soundtrack to Dennis Hopper's film The Hot Spot and noteworthy on its own as probably the only time Hooker, Miles Davis, and Taj Mahal ever played together. Navarre's skill in selecting musicians, finding sample sources, and assembling cool, streamlined grooves adds up to quite an accomplishment. --Bob Bannister

St Germain an album par excellence !.......2007-07-09
Thanks to Amazon, I was able to buy a CD I had been hunting for several years, and at a great price including postage to Australia !
The tital track Rose Rouge is an edgy Jazz/Rock ensemble without peer, and is definitely a 10 out of 10. The other numbers I rate between 7 and 9 and the CD has not left my car CD player in nearly 2 weeks I love it that much !
Thank you Amazon and your seller for giving me the chance to buy this all time great modern jazz item ! Any Jazz lover should invest in this album for you would not be sorry ! :-)
international hit.......2007-07-04
every youth hostel all over the world has this CD. it is a great chill out album. enjoyed it for years.
Rose Rouge..........2007-06-27
is my absolute favorite! It's why I bought the cd. I wasn't particularly crazy about a few of the tracks on the cd; however, after listening to in its entirety, I found myself enjoying more. So my advice to those that are considering TOURIST, listen first, and you might actually find yourself with a gem. ~Enjoy!
All time best Driving album.......2007-05-28
This album never gets old -- I have driven thousands of miles and km with it on -- driving at night, in the day, it's deep, grooving, not harsh. Fantastic
Great CD.......2007-05-14

Consistent Ripps.......2007-01-17
Tracks 2, 5, and 8 are outstanding! worth the price of a CD alone.
Big Rip Fan.......2006-08-13
I bought this album on cassette tape back in 1989 and wore the thing out! Now I'm getting it on CD - finally! The Rippingtons got me hooked on the smooth jazz sound back then and I still listen to their same tunes over and over. My husband and I even had their music played at our wedding reception. If you want something to relax to without falling asleep, the Rips are for you! They are the best, and this is one of their finest albums!
Definitely a must have.......2005-10-04
From "Tourist in Paradise" to "The Princess", this cd is an awesome stress reliever. It got me through MANY commutes on the DC beltway!
My First Rippingtons.......2005-08-16
This cd was my introduction to the Rippingtons back in '89 (fresh out of high school---into college)...I then started to collect some of their other works. Without a doubt, from their classy Jazz Cat (retro beatnik?) mascot artwork to the actual musical material,as a whole, this cd is brilliant ! The vitality and the energy (even the subtle warmth and beauty of the slower tracks like One Night In Brazil) from this project renders each composition to be very special with absolutely no fillers. Styles range from contemporary smooth cool jazz, light pop rock (Earthbound) to a highly danceable salsa track (Aruba!) steeped in it's rich Latin ambience and rhythms really makes this an awesome and complete cd ! Tourist in Paradise is polished to perfection.
I happen to own both the cd version and the vinyl/record version (remember those?). The vinyl pressing is a trip to listen to and makes the music really come alive---now I know why jazz enthusiasts prefer the sound of vinyl over cd sometimes ! There's no elevator muzak here guys. The Rippingtons know how to really surprise and catch your attention by also creating beautiful Latin-jazz infused rhythms and tracks throughout some of their catalog releases; They do it with such genuine command and natural ease !
Out of the entire Rippingtons catalog I recommend these 4 titles: 1. Tourist In Paradise, 2. Moonlighting, 3.Life In The Tropics, 4. Wild Card.
THE FUNNEST RIPPS EVER!!.......2005-04-01
I HAVE ALL THE RIPPS CD'S AND HAVE SEEN THEM IN CONCERT MORE THAN I CARE TO COUNT. THIS IS MY FAVORITE OF ALL THOUGH. SOMEONE IN AN EARLIER POSTING SAID IT, AND I'LL REPEAT, THAT THIS CD JUST ALWAYS REMINDS ME OF A BEAUTIFUL SUMMER DAY AND NIGHT. JUST SO SMOOTH AND YET EXCITING. BRANDON FIELDS AND STEVE REID REALLY MAKE SUCH STATEMENTS ON THIS CD. WHY THEY EVER LEFT THE BAND IS ONLY RUSS'S LOSS. 'ONE SUMMER NIGHT IN BRAZIL' IS JUST BEAUTIFUL! 'DESTINY' AND 'TOURIST AND PARADISE' ARE JUST SO GREAT YOU HAVE TO HEAR THEM TO BELIEVE THEM!! THE EXCITEMENT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS FOR RIPPS LOVERS!! STEVE REIDS PLAYING JUST MAKES YOU WANT TO HANG WITH GUY HE JUST GIVES YOU THE FEELING THAT LIFE IS SO EXCITING!! JUPITERS CHILD HAS ALWAYS MADE ME FEEL LIKE CUDDLING UP TO BRANDON FIELDS ON A BEACH SOMEWHERE (OOPS) IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY RIPPINGTONS CD'S GET THIS ONE AND IF YOU HAVE ANY OR MOST OF THEM THEN YOU MUST GET THIS ONE!! AND BY THE WAY STEVE AND BRANDON, HOOK UP WILL YOU! YOU TWO MAKE SOME GREAT MUSIC TOGETHER!

Tribute albums are always suspect; classical interpretations of rock even more so--and follow-ups to the same are fraught with mediocrity. Just witness the inexplicable glut of String Quartet Tribute discs to Tool, Bruce Springsteen, and many other top-selling and cult artists. On Hold Me to This, his second run at the music of art-rock group Radiohead, classical pianist Christopher O'Riley avoids all these pitfalls. These aren't easy-listening piano renditions of Radiohead tunes, but deeply inspired, often challenging and dissonant re-imaginings. O'Riley succeeds by taking the music on its own terms. He doesn't try to make it "classical" but lets the classical nature of the music ring out. From the storming chordal overtone clusters of "There There" to the Chopinesque refrain of "The Spinning Plates," O'Riley makes you forget these songs were originally played by a raging rock band. Instead, they seem born on the keys of his piano. His "Paranoid Android" is like Conlon Nancarrow going boogie-woogie one moment and painfully, sweetly rhapsodic the next. I'm not sure how Radiohead fans will respond to this, but piano and classical listeners should rejoice. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
this has the depth you need..........2007-02-17
I don't believe you need to be ga-ga over Radiohead to enjoy this CD. This CD, it's all piano (w/o vocals) if you didn't already know that going in, will provide an even deeper appreciation of the textures & depth of the Radiohead catalog. Mr. O'Riley does takes some artistic liberties with the songs, albeit minor, but in so doing he unleashes the potential they all have. And this potential is truly staggering---some selections are nothing short of gorgeous.
Hold me to this: you WILL be floored by this CD. it's well worth the purchase.
Oddly Boring.......2006-07-16
I adore Radiohead, and really enjoy solo piano. I should love this disc, but I don't. Even though the wonderful creepiness of Radiohead is completely absent, I would be willing to chalk that up to artistic interpretation. But that's not what bugs me about this disc. What really bugs me is his style of playing. He relies on resonance and the transcript is completely devoid of silence. The result is a droning wall of notes, and all the pieces sound the same. It reminds me of Windham Hill recordings, but without the expression. Get Yorke's new album, Eraser, if you need a Radiohead fix, or get George Winston if you want solo Piano. I really wish I could recommend this, but I just can't.
a bit disappointing.......2006-07-11
O'Riley takes some liberties here, and that's fine. I'm a bit disappointed by his dynamic range, which is a bit predictable from song to song, and also with his tendency to overload the songs with schizophrenic ramblings. The craziness works well at times -- see "There There" for a time when it works well -- and other times it is overwhelming (see: "Nice Dream").
Despite a sometimes overloaded sound, the song list is so attractive and O'riley hits so many high notes (if you will..) that the CD is well worth owning. I prefer the "True Love Waits" album.
Cocktail Party Radiohead.......2006-03-21
I own the first Christopher O'Reily Radiohead Tribute - True Love Waits. If you love his stunning piano in that, or if you love stunning piano altogether, you will love Hold Me To This. I am an avid lover of all things Radiohead turned into wordless music lullabyes and this one does not dissapoint.
Good effort.......2006-03-02
Sound all the same...listen to the samples before you buy it. If your a fan of radiohead you wont like it...if your a fan of the piano you wont like it. But I give my respect to the musician for making the effort to replicate already beutiful music.

After their first album brought Athlete both commercial and critical success in the U.K., it was always going to be a tough act to follow. But on Tourist, the London four-piece have ditched the quirky pop of their debut and instead created an album that rivals Coldplay with its sweeping guitars, soaring melodies, and emotive lyrics. Sonically, there's much going on here: from strings to electronic beats and squelchy, synthesized bleeps. As a result, Tourist manages to sound both epic and personal at the same time--a change reminiscent of Radiohead's move from the Britpop of Pablo Honey to the inspired songwriting of The Bends. Best of all, singer Joel Pott has managed to ditch the Mockney accent that marred their debut, making Athlete sound like a more serious proposition. And with songs like hit single "Wires," grandiose opener "Chances," and the bouncy, strutting "Modern Mafia," Tourist looks set to elevate Athlete to a whole new level. --Robert Burrow
Customer Reviews:
I've got some kind of fungus on my feet .......2007-03-21
This album makes me want to walk, not run, a marathon. There's nothing jarring about Tourist, but somehow it makes you want to stand up and say, "Man, I wish I were wearing pants." The song Tourist is a rousing anthem that, if you don't like it, I don't think we are going to be friends.
What's wrong with the music industry?.......2007-02-19
What a shame? Such a great band with no world wide recognition, they should be way bigger than they are,why didn't the Brit awards nominate them or something?! They came up with amazing tracks, this band produced singles that became very popular cause they are so damn good,my fave would be "You got the style","Westside" and "Beautiful",this album is as good,i only heard "Wires" before getting the album, but then i discovered the whole album is actually great,it should be a world wide best seller, not only in the UK,you got classics in this album, there is something about his voice,i just don't what it is,soothing and relaxing,i miss hearing them from time to time, this rarely happens to me with music, they are simply as good as Coldplay,Keane and Snow Patrol. You won't regret getting this album, you'll thank moi...
I love every song, it doesn't happen much glad it did.......2006-12-31
I have bought this album for like 10 people, it is great. love it. I think they will be big in the us at some point, i'm hoping that it is after i get to see them live in a small venue. They have a great electro-groove. if you like coldplay you'll dig it up.
Still listening to it regularly.......2006-11-30
A year and a half along after first listening to this album, it still remains on my playlist. What strikes me is not the depth of the lyrics, which can sometimes be described as lacking depth (still much more mature than Vehicles and Animals). But rather, the fact that the music is moving for when you're in a particular mood...brooding when listening to Street Map or Trading Air, singing/humming along to the more energetic Half Light or If I Found Out.
Sigh...the music still harks me back to the times when I listened to it frequently last year, riding around on the Tube and trains while living in London.
(I had the fortune of watching them at their concert at the Hammersmith Apollo, which did not stray far from the original score and arrangements. I would have hoped for some variation and creativity, but perhaps that will come in future tours)
I may not be the most discerning listener, but regardless, Tourist remains one of the choice albums of my music collection.
Spectacular!.......2006-03-24
I've owned their music for a good time now, but after just seeing them live in Austin, TX, I feel I have to leave a review. Unfortunately here in the US, Athlete is not well known, which is insane given how spectacular they actually are. This CD is simply incredible, and if there is any band of 2005 I would have to categorize as my favorite, it's Athlete. Combining both ballads and tranquil upbeat songs, this CD is perfect and the band shows itself to be incredibly talented. Too bad I didn't get to meet them! They do have similarities with Coldplay (particularly with the pounding drums) but I do have to say they are MUCH better. Highlights on this album are "Half Light", "Wires", "Street Map", "Yesterday Threw Everything at Me" and "Twenty Four Hours", though the entire CD is great. A nice mix of electronic sounds, piano and vocals definitely make this CD a must-have!

Like many British producers, B12's Mike Golding and Steve Rutter are obsessed with the music and mythology of Detroit. While their music draws primarily from European electronica, their sounds are unabashedly steeped in the rough textures and urban sci-fi concepts of the Motor City. On Time Tourists, the follow-up to 1993's acclaimed Electro-Soma, B12 show a more evolved and mature side of this aesthetic. Crystalline melodies reminiscent of Vangelis are pushed to the forefront, while a clattering background of percussion keeps time from a respectful distance. In keeping with the album's concept (time travel and retro-futurism), they project electronic music 200 years into the future, where all the gimmicks have worn thin and solid production reigns supreme. --Matthew Corwine
Customer Reviews:
dull only to the dullest of minds.......2006-06-16
It's been ten years since I purchased this fantastic second release by B12 and not a minute of it sounds dated or dull in the least. In fact I would go as far as to say this is a gorgeous album--imaginative, vibrant and futuristic without trying to hard to be. The melodies on here sparkle amidst deep ambient textures and sharp, spangly rhythms and beats. It's reflective without being boring--perfect music for daydreams and mental space (or in this case time) travel.
I grew up with groups such as Cabaret Voltaire and this music's much more complex, sophisticated and simply better than any of their early stuff (and I love that stuff) while in many ways very similar to the direction that the Cabs would soon go towards the end of their career in the early ninties, with Richard H. Kirk continuing in a similar fashion, making stellar, atmospheric, beat/rhythm oriented electronic music.
Anyhow, enough on the Cabs here. If you want good, classic "electronic listening music" without the gimmics then pick up this fantastic musical mind movie at once! Plus there's some amazing cover art to boot. Nothing short of a classic.
Not as great as his debut "Electro-Soma", but it's still a good electronica album.......2005-12-29
Nothing B12 did could really trump "Electro-Soma", but that's not to say "Time Tourist" is bad. In fact, Time Tourist probably has cooler songs then "Electro-Soma" did, but it has too few of them. Whereas most every track on "Electro-Soma" is fantastic, "Time Tourist" suffers from obvious filler. A lot of the tracks also sound pretty similar to the musical style found on "Electro-Soma". Most of the tracks make GREAT background music ("Phettt" especially). Tracks like the first one, "VOID/Comm", however, are so awe-inspiring (it gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it) that it makes this album a worthy purchase if you like this genre. Recommended.
Highlights include:
"VOID/Comm"
"DB5"
"Phettt"
"Epilion"
"Scriptures"
"The Silicon Garden"
Awesome Music!!!.......2004-05-03
This is the kind of music your great grand children will find in the attic 200 years from now and will be jamming to at a nightclub hidden on the back of one of Saturn's moons. This CD is a few millenia ahead of everything with in the electronica genre and everything outside. So do your descendants a favor and get this now. Very well orchestrated sound effects and breaks as well as groovy baseline. Techno heads be warned these tunes, in my opinion, are on the intellectual side. However, one can shake it to some of the tracks.
Enjoy!
Electronic music to space travel!.......2004-01-18
The follow up to the majestical 'Electro Soma' could never outdo or match it, but 'Time Tourist' stands on its own as another fine production from the B12 boys.
All the elements are here; beautiful synth melodies, smooth beats and spacey basslines. It does actually soundlike a soundtrack for space.
If you are at all into electronic music and prefer the more thoughtful and well crafted style of electronica over the dancey trash, then you can do no wrong with this.
detroit wheels slammin, british scifi melodies.......2002-12-17
Ambient melodic techno with much subtlety and restraint in the perfect places. production values through the roof, hi-fi setups will thank you. meant for listening, but dancable (i don't dance). mostly upbeat, with just a dash of bladerunner. beautiful balance between pretty & slightly forlorn, never menacing. this is as good or better than 'electro-soma' and easily ranks up there with the best of black dog productions. This album is a truly special gem. Get it while it's readily available.

Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09
Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.
It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.
The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

Amazon.com

Thanks to Amazon, I was able to buy a CD I had been hunting for several years, and at a great price including postage to Australia !
The tital track Rose Rouge is an edgy Jazz/Rock ensemble without peer, and is definitely a 10 out of 10. The other numbers I rate between 7 and 9 and the CD has not left my car CD player in nearly 2 weeks I love it that much !

international hit.......2007-07-04
every youth hostel all over the world has this CD. it is a great chill out album. enjoyed it for years.

One of the finest complete albums in many years........2005-11-28
Truthfully, how often do you buy an album that is full of great songs? Most have...what?...three or four decent ones? If that?
Finally, the trend is broken.
Athlete's sophomore effort TOURIST provides 11 tracks of some of the best music in any genre for quite some time. The musical stylings are reminiscent of Coldplay but the lyrics of each song surpass those of the more well-known group. Another reviewer touched on it: Athlete is Coldplay, if Coldplay's songs had emotion.
The title track "Tourist" is sure to see time on the charts as are some of the others, but the strongest songs on the album are "Chances" and "Street Map". Nothing is better than a song whose lyrics hit home on the first listen and these songs do just that. If nothing else, TOURIST provides 11 straight tracks of musical brilliance. No need to push the 'skip' button on the CD player...that is, unless you want to go straight to your favorite song...and it's almost assured that one of the 11 will become one of your favorites.
CD of the Year: "Tourist" by Athlete.......2005-11-25
I went to a U2 concert in Amsterdam, and came away an ATHLETE fan for life. Athlete was booked as an Opening Act. When they got through with their 'shorted' one-hour+ set, I left the stadium wondering if U2 even played.
From first to last song, Athlete plays as seasoned performers. The melodies layed on keyboard echo full, and true alongside the harmonics intoned on vocals. The CD clips along, and frequently plays twice, or more before realizing the CD-auto repeat is on... From resounding/anthemic sing-a-longs to booming-rockers, this CD does not disappoint.
I've also bought MP3's from "Vehicles and Animals" and find flashes of brilliance that "Tourist" captures throughout. Will look for tickets whenever/wherever Athlete performs for years to come...
I love this band warning if you've lost a girl.......2005-10-11
This album is totally great. I don't usually write reviews for music, but I make an exception with athlete. There are very few albums that I like almost every song on them. But this is one of them!
If you listen to the Sample know that their a dynamic band their song are not completely the same through out. the 30 second samples don't do them justice.
Be warned though, if you've lost the girl recently in this album is like kryptonite. It will destroy you. But if you like easy listening British pop. This is the good stuff. Check out their web site their forums are pretty happening. I think his band to be party big someday.
PS buy the one with the DVD it's only like a dollar more and the DVD is nice. The of interviews are good. You do see some of the instruments they play and has a couple live tracks from their other album deftly worth a dollar.
Have some fun and get it done
A Step Above The Previous.......2005-08-18
In Athlete's second album you begin to sense that they are a band not based on there accomplishments and monetary gain, instead they are a band which truly acknowledges the position they have luckily been place in, which obviously is making music for a living. Thus in Athlete's second album in contrast to the first "Vehicles & Animals" there seems to be more emotion though both the looming music and the supposed thoughtless Athlete lyrics. In such songs as "Wires," "Street Map," and "Twenty Four Hours" melodic and far-reaching music offers a side to Athlete which until this album has been unnoticed. Additionally songs like "Half Life" and "Tourist" share resemblance to some of the pop based songs on "Vehicles & Animals." Therefore, Athlete's second album is a vision of a soon to be remarkable band who will engage all who listen to them.
Forget boring Coldplay. .......2005-06-19
This is the new album Coldplay wish they had made instead of the boring "formula" drivel of "x & y". I hadn't heard the first Athlete cd when I bought "Tourist". I was quite moved by this album on first listen. Successive listens have shown that this is a classic album. If they walked out on stage and performed the entire record from beginning to end, noone would walk away unsatisfied. The songs are fantastic, the arrangements perfect, the electronic embellishments are interesting, the lyrics are moving, and the vocals are beautiful. Definitely will be in my top 5 for 2005! The last album I couldn't stop playing (and still haven't) is The Shore-S/T Debut from last year, and "Tourist" is right behind that album in excellence. So, after loving this new record I put on the first Athlete cd and was shocked at what rubbish it is! It was so bad I could barely get through it. Even an Elbow remix couldn't save it! (and I LOVE Elbow). It is amazing to me that they progressed in a year from trash to creating this masterpiece. I would run, not walk to the nearest store to buy "Tourist"!!
