Austrians Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister, whose smooth and sexy acid jazz has attracted almost as much attention as their curious resemblance to American folksters Simon and Garfunkel, demonstrate their skills on yet another installment of Studio K7's DJ Kicks series. The mix highlights the best of European trip-hop, acid jazz, and drum and bass, with their own "High Noon" and "Black Baby" mixed with tracks from British trip-hoppers Herbalizer, German technicians Hardfloor, and Viennese weirdo Patrick Pulsinger, among others. Peter Kruder of the famed duo Kruder and Dorfmeister, stays true to form (downtempo yet invigorating) on this, his first solo outing. Peace Orchestra is similar to his work in K&D, but--if possible--the music is even more serene and stoned sounding. Floaty melodies sparkle against a backdrop of gauzy reverb and echo. Vocals drift in and out of consciousness. And it's all very, very slow. The record contains less funk and groove than K&D's projects, but it's no less sensual. Dreamy is the operative word here. Beatheads beware. While DJ Count Basic serves up a total of seven tracks from studio wunderkinds Kruder & Dorfmeister, stretching out to almost 40 minutes of pleasant remixology, there's little here that hasn't crept up on another compilation by Basic or K&D. On top of that, the Count isn't working with a whole lot of source material. Two of the four original acid-jazz tracks represented here make multiple appearances. "Hide & Seek" creeps up twice, once as a slight but successful mix that strips down the lush R&B production in favor of a slow and funky horn-and-piano loop, and again as a tougher, almost hip-hop take. "Speechless" shows up a whopping three times, once with an emphasis on the original's Twin Peaks-y murk, once with a junglistic injection, and finally (and most successfully) with a watery vocal mix. Nothing's really sub-par here; it's just that nothing really new or revolutionary is happening, either. --Bob Michaels

I never shop at Banana Republic, so how i got this CD is beyond me...but i found it one day while trying to find calming music for my baby...and i found THIS! i love it!!! i will continue to search the earth looking to see if they produced more.
it isn't new-agey music...its got a little bit of a beat to it, in a very sensual, soothing way to it. hard to explain.

It's a shame it's gone out of print..........2004-05-28

This album is chock-full of excellent early trip/hop tracks most influenced by jazz and r&b. This (and the Volume 2 edition) introduced me to trip-hop and eventually electronic music in the early 90's, and to this day I still listen to it when I want some mellow but not at all boring or newagey music to chill by. Kruder & Dorfmeister, Massive Attack, Portishead and Hooverphonic fans will probably find this record to their liking. The track "To the Bone (Let's Get Stoned)" has a great beat that would fit any party, while other tracks are downbeat and laid back.
