Sun-kissed house grooves are once again the order of the day on Those Things, the second solo album from Bay Area DJ/producer Miguel Migs. In contrast to 2002's Colorful You, however, this go-round has Migs taking his blissed-out beats in a more organic direction by throwing a variety of live instruments into the mix. On the title track, for instance, house queen Lisa Shaw's vocals bounce atop a percolating bassline that juggles multiple synths, rhythmic funk guitar, an overdriven guitar solo, and vocal samples. Other tracks are laced with trumpet, sax, and congas. For the most part, this eclectic approach bears fruit by giving Migs a deeper bag of tricks to use in working his deep house magic: "So Far" and "Mesmerized," which both feature the superb vocals of LT (a.k.a. Aya) have more than enough of that bubbly warmth that put Naked Music on the map, while more novel tunes like "Shake It Up"--where Brand Nubian's Sadat X tells the tale of a night out with some cliché but more playfulness--are unexpectedly beguiling. Different from the Norm Yet Catchy.......2007-06-25

Sometimes it takes going away from a certain style of music to find out what you are really capable of creating. Migs on the other hand did a wonderful job with his latest album "Those Things". Although it isn't his ususal style, I was still impressed with this album. It's not a album to club to but more of a relaxing/ hanging out with friends type of mix. Some of my favorite tracks include "So Far," "Those Things," "Fire,"
"Shake It Up," and "Giving It All". You would not be disappointed with purchasing this album regardless if you are being introduced to Migs for the first time or not.

he produced a few good cds, used to spin pretty cool....all in the past tense. all his new stuff and parties are true amateur quality. the seams between tracks are obvious, many times he even missed beats, the selection of tracks were real poor... i love deephouse but from now on, i'm not buying any mings. anymore.

I own every album Miguel has made and in my opinion this album comes straight from Miguels soul. He has also included his reggae feel in this album. I feel this album includes more sub-genres of house music feel than any of his other previous albums. If you want more musical ideas to create your own compositions, this album will trigger more ideas with several subhouse genres.

Very disappointing.......2007-05-14

From one of the best deep house DJs, this is substantially below par. He should stick to compilation releases and leave the recordings to true musicians/artists. I felt there was no soul to this CD, as the tracks seem predictable and cheesy. His first artist album (Colorful You) was better, as well as his many DJ CDs - In The House and 24th St. are his best works.

Clever & never boring.......2007-05-11

Miguel Mig's `Those Things' keeps the familiar beats that have made `Migs' a popular electronica name. The new mixes are vocal-laden and contain more guitar, saxophones, and congas than his pervious offerings. The music comes familiar, but somewhat different, almost as if he's pushing a more pop beat than his `Get Salted' and Nude Tempo' releases. Yet Mig's embraces the mix magic in luscious voices of staple singer Lisa Shaw and the mysterious `L.T.', which sounds all too similar to the sexy Aya. While Tim Fuller's easy-going and blended voice carries much of this CD. Vocalist Fred Ross also shows much promise with his clean voice and emotional tone.

`So Far', Can't get through', `Mesmerized', `Sometime', `Get down tonight', and Side to Side' are the more listenable and memorable songs in this CD. I've listened to them for several days now and they haven't gotten boring.

I'm hoping to hear more from Miguel Mig's mixes in the near future. He's the closest this to a Paul Oakenfold without marquee vocalists.

I recommend this CD to anyone who like dance music without the harshness. This smooth blend will have your friends asking `Who's that!"

The seventh installment in the House of Om series features the heavyweight turntable techniques of DJ Mark Farina, who returns to his San Francisco roots eight years after having put West Coast house on the map with the much acclaimed San Francisco Sessions. Farina's style is as hard to pin down as the globetrotting DJ himself, and this mix is no exception. It starts out on a deeper note, with an obscure a cappella that is signature Farina, moving quickly into some uptempo numbers that get the head nodding and the feet shuffling. The mix really lets loose with tracks from Check Diesel, Vibezselect, and the Littelmen before moving into warm, laid-back grooves to bring it home. It progresses nicely, a few dead spots (like the Kerry Chandler track) notwithstanding. Yep yep....Mark Farina did it again....simply blowing my mind away with another house mix that will definately keep you moving. A little more uptempo than normal Farina mixes but never the less....outstanding. It just keeps building up to a state where you find yourself just bobbing your head to the funky deep house that made Mark Farina who he is today. Don't hesitate....add this to your collection!!

Hailing originally from Chicago but long associated with San Francisco's jazz-house scene, Mark Farina returns to his bread-and-butter mix series Mushroom Jazz after 2003's eclectic artist record Air Farina. Less laid-back than Thievery Corporation but not quite as deep as Om label mates like Marques Wyatt, the Mushroom records often delve into hip-hop, and Jazz 5 is no exception. But while rhymes and raps jump out alongside snappy beats to startle the listener from chill tune-induced hypnosis, large chunks of the record, especially in the last half, are completely instrumental. Some of Air Farina's electro-funk adventurousness is here as well; check out the dazed and hazy original track "Cali Spaces." First of all, let me tell you that before buying this CD, I was sure that I would be disappointed, cause it was nearly impossible to make better than MJ 2, 3, or 4.

I'm a big fan of the serie, which is in my opinion the best downtempo mixes EVER!

But Mushroom Jazz does not smell like the other MJ...
In fact, I would give 3,5/5 stars for this mix. (5/5 for all the other MJ, except the first). I would give 4 stars for the tracklist. Farina still have very good tastes, and tracks like "Autumn Evening Breeze", "Hollywood", or "This Love Thing" are really sweet. Why not 5 stars? Because I think there are a few tracks whose atmosphere / ambiance don't fit with Mushroom Jazz. "Tribute" for example, or "Down" by Red Astaire. These tracks fit better with old school / dirty / funky mixes. A bit too much of rap tracks as well in my opinion.

But the real problem comes from the mixing. Mark, where is your wizardry?! The mixing technique is just ok... Where are your sweet sound / voice collage through the mix? Inexisting. Overmore, the mix is not a story-telling anymore, the tracks don't flow together. It begins with a sweet & jazzy thing, just next the raw track of Colossus with it's heavy percussion, next again a sweet piano track, and a dirty ambiance next with DJ Numark... well we are far from the perfect structure of it's predecessor (MJ4)with only one rap track (superb track with talented rappers People Under The Stairs) in the beginning, and a female RnB voice in the middle (like in Mushroom Jazz 2), then only instrumentals.
Too much rap or singing is killing the particular dreamy ambiance of Mushroom Jazz unfortunately...

Well, it was the point of view of an elitist fan (lol). I think it's the worst of the serie... It's not the classy/innocent/ urban sound anymore, but more like a common jazzy/funky mix with no particular ambiance.

I think that fans who don't have bought it yet will be disappointed.
But for those who like quality HipHop sounds, it's a very good mix by the way...

But if you are new to mushroom jazz and you want to discover something different, you absolutely must buy Mushroom Jazz 2, and then Mushroom Jazz 4, which are one of my all time best musical experience.

Trip-hop, ("old-skool, hip-hop without fowl lyrics,") blended with mushroomy jazz notes. If love both yet never heard the two together you are in for a treat. He is a master at what he does. In my opinion, 2 was the best, then 1 then 3.

Funk'n groov'n.......2007-05-01

Mark Farina was an innovator of sorts; he started implementing jazz into his sets early on. By now the mushroom jazz formula has gotten a bit tired. Besides, where is the jazz? The opening track "Afros In Ya" promises greatness with sax bending in and out of the song, while the slow but funky beat creates a nice acid jazz ambience. From there it goes downhill.The disc has more hip-hop flavor than anything else. Maybe he should have called this one, Mushroom Hip-Hop. Don't get me wrong, I like most of the tracks because they have good beatz, but seriously, this is basically a take off on acid jazz."Autumm Evening Breeze" seems to feature the hip-hop vocals of the Ozomatli singer Zen Dog. Each song flows seemlesssly into the next for one funky groove. The emphasis is more on funk, it is like house music mixed with acid jazz. With songs entitled "Funky For You" you get the idea. Strange Fruit Project's "Maintain" is a nice instrumental that can fit into the electro-jazz label as it leads into a similar song entitled "Back in '92." This isn't my favorite in the Mushroom jazz seies but it is still pretty good. This is recommended for those that believe in one nation under a funky groove.

I Have New Faith In Music Today Thanks Mushroom Jazz*.......2007-03-11

I recently heard a cut off My Yahoo from MJ5 and thought "What the heck- I will try it". After I heard Vol. 5 I quickly turned around and purchased Vol. 4 and Vol. 3 too! Was not disappointed one bit. Truely awesome cuts from beginning to end... just one good one after another. Right on Mark Farina & Co. Next stop, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 baby. All my friends are so jealous too... I won't tell them where I got the music from for a few more days! Hahaha- I'm loving it. Right now Mark and I are the Man.

Too Unbelievable.......2006-05-21

This album deserves more than 5 stars. Number One is the standard. It knocks you down incorporating jazz and hip hop. I bought it in DC and heard it in Rome. #2 is almost as good as #1. Ditto for #3. Number 4 is terrible. With reluctance, I got number 5. It is soooo goood that you crave for more, and it makes you play all of the rest (except #4). What is so good is that it stays in your head. The beat never goes away. I have looked at the performers individually and bought into them. The OM Sound is great. I can't wait for Mushroom #6.

Kaskade keeps it groovin'.......2007-03-14

This is the ultimate in feel-good music, brought to us by none other than the amazing Kaskade. This CD will perk you up any time of the day, leaving groove vibes all around. It opens up with Tamra Keenan - Here I Am, a track with booming bass lines through out, and a great voice to back it up. One of my favorites on the CD is Kaskade - Everything. When he played here in Austin, he opened with this track, and it was sublime.

This is a nice deep house production. If you like this, check out the first full length CD for producer Quentin Allen as Karu. There are other 12" releases on Silver Network, Dadhouse, Winding Road, Mimosa & Smooth Agent. This CD is a very consistant production with a good blend of jazz, hip-hop, techno, neo-soul, and deep house all together. The beats are very crisp and sound good in the car, the house or the club. Some songs tastefully use vocal snippets to add flavor. There is even a track featuring Warren Harris aka Hanna (Shadow Records, Silver Network, Flat & Round, Freerange). If you want good quality deep house, this CD is for you.

Groove Junkies have crafted a style influenced by soul, funk, r&b, gospel, and Latin rhythms. Pumping grooves, uplifting lyrics, and undeniable hooks are their signature elements. DJ Fluid, founder and head honcho of Om, creates his diverse sound from combining everything from Chicago House to Nu Jazz to Brazilian rhythms. Chuck Love (aka Charlie Erickson) found his calling behind the decks and mic where the groove is musical and solid; good vibes flow out of the hi-fi as infectious hooks float, smoky chords punch, and solos fly.

All about Disc 1.......2006-12-20

Maybe I've gotten spoiled by Miguel Migs and some of Naked Music's offerings. Discs 2 and 3 of this set are some of the most monotonous sounding, unoriginal mixes and vibes I've heard in a while.

Disc 1 is a totally different story, however. HOT grooves, thumpin' bass, and powerhouse vocals scattered throughout make OM SUMMER SESSIONS worth buying. A couple of gospel house tunes were a very nice surprise on an early morning ride to work when I felt like going back to bed -- especially when the gospel diva herself, Ann Nesby, makes a thrilling appearance. She doesn't even sing on her own albums like she does here.

I guess performances like that and the overall goodness of the first disc were what set my expectation for the rest of the set, which is shockingly dull by comparison. 2/3 of this collection of tunes is mediocre so I can't give the complete set more than 3 stars.

That said -- disc 1 is one of the best dance discs extant, almost up there with Naked Music's stuff. You'll have to decide if it's worth the baggage that it carries with it, lol.

Funky grooves.......2006-08-24

It doesn't take very long to establish a groove on this 3 cd set: possibly 3 minutes at most. The funky quality of the album reminds me of the likes of Soulive. There are male vocals on pretty much every track on the first disc. This is my first house of Om compilation so there are crowd cheers on some of the tracks as it is supposed to be live. My favorite grooves on the first disc have to be Ron Hall's "The way you love me" and Frankie Knuckles "Disco Shimmy." Micky More's "Victory Dance" carries the second album well. It is surrounded by some alright tracks. Audiowhores "Not going back" establishes a nice groove with horns sounding and the album ends well with Fourfeet. DJFluid's whole set is good, and adds the techno edge to the cds. There are some cool bass lines on all 3 cd's and some decent female vocals. Overall, a good compilation of funky grooves.

Mushroom Jazz-man Mark Farina steps out from behind the decks for the funky and unpredictable Air Farina, his first self-produced artist record. Farina's experimental streak has always competed with his Chicago house background, but this one is a complete grab bag. Sparse beats mix with electro and ambient textures, with grooves hovering just out of reach, lingering in a funk-jazz haze. The theme of aviation fits in the cracks and crevices, expressed literally with five different "layovers" of air traffic dialogue and flight school instruction. "Dream Machine" is a standout, as Sean Hayes' vocals stretch out and sigh over cowbells and Farina's laconic production. The house DJ does make an appearance now and again on songs like "To Do" (featuring label mates Kaskade), but other tracks ("Dropped into the Water") could pass for a poor man's Mouse On Mars. It's a tribute to Farina that despite the sonic diversity on display, his record still has a sense of unity. Nevertheless, while his ears are admirably open, Air Farina would be better off keeping a few ideas in reserve for artist record number two. --Matthew Cooke

That's all really, this CD is one of the best in my collection! If you like house, you should love this! One thing I really liked about this CD was that all the tracks are joined like one long track! Excellent!

concept album?.......2006-05-04

I am not a house person and might not have known that Farina was house if weren't for the categorization here. However I do recognize that this is his style. So for a guy that is drum and beats plus a bit of Trip-Hop, Farina has 3 of the top 5 songs on my iPod and Fatboy and Moorcheeba have none:) Two of those are from this album....so if you are questioning the sub-genre or just looking to start into electronica, he's a guy you can't go wrong with and this is a great start. And if you ever buy an album for just one song, then by all means allow it to be this album for Travel. In fact, had that been the first song, I may have never heard another on it....it's that good.

Disappointed to see that only few people are open-minded about house music..

I've been dreamin' and listenin' to Farina for 4 years now. I love deep house, I love HipHop, I love urban sounds.. but I love experimentation and people who dare some stuff too...

San Francisco sessions vol 1? a masterpiece for the deep and funky house generation..

Mushroom jazz series? a unique atmosphere, a pride for true downtempo/hiphop heads..

Air Farina? something special, 4.5/5 stars. The man has dared, the result is freak, the result is deep..

Some pure deep house tracks, with a strong idea of experimentation.. (elements of HipHop, Electro, Minimal, and the very smart airport ambiance)
Listen to Betcha Do..Radio...Cali Spaces.. have you ever heard a man who did something like dis before?..
Farina is unique with his musical approach. He has HIS unique style.
Okay, that's not the album which will make you dance and rock on the dancefloor... it's an album that you will hear with your favourite audiophones, in your sofa..and you will dream, you will travel with Farina and his airport concept, very aesthetic, very stylish, very...original.

Buy it if you want a different house, more minimal, more "mental".

Nowhere near Farina's usual high standard.......2006-01-28

I'm a big fan of Mark Farina's DJ mixes, so I expected a lot from Air Farina. It's a perfect example of why it's easier for producers to move to DJing than DJs to move to producing.

The production of this CD is amateur at best. The beats are flat and uninspiring. There's no swing whatsoever... it sounds like it was programmed by a robot. Every other sound on the CD sounds like it was pasted in at random intervals on top of these beats. Every song on the album is exactly the same.

It sounds just like the kind of music I made after two months of playing with my gear. The difference was I realized I sucked, and Mark Farina is a world class DJ. When judging your own work it's hard to be critical, especially if you're surrounded by "yes" men.

Mark Farina is a superb DJ, but he needs a lot more time to develop into a competent producer. This album should have had another producer since the concept was workable.

Lacking the Life and Energy...........2004-12-12

I absoloutly LOVE Miguel Migs. His groovy beats are like none other, and unfortunately in this album are not found to the extent in his other albums. I agree with Phopo in that the beats were very repetitive. Not every album is perfect, he'll hit it next time!

I didn't entirely forget the DJ scene. This is the first review of such a CD in a while. In SF we are stuck in the rave culture. We are stuck in the period of 1989-1995. Back then we went to our first club and had our first E. Those dreams never die. This is the first mix CD by female DJs on Om Records. I like it because Colette is very nice to look at. I haven't sampled her DJ skills lately because I am checking out bands like Be Your Own Pet and Sound Team. This double CD is a heavy house record. So unless you are gay, or like to dance, you may not like it so much. This sort of music is still the background sound to all things that happen in West Hollywood. There is a new Oakenfold record. There is a new Herbert CD. This is a good one too.

An absolute must have!.......2006-08-30

Full of jackin' beats and soulful melodies, this mix may be the best of the summer. Colette and dj Heather deliver the goods.
Both discs are excellent. My favorite tracks include #3 & #9 on disc1. And #'s 9-12 on disc2. You buy now. Love long time!

These gals have skills, and their track selection is top notch! Props to Om for continuously putting out quality dj mixes, and for giving the girls a chance to show all these dude dj's where it's really at on the dance floor. San Francisco Sessions is arguably Mark Farina's seminal contribution to the house music community. The disc opens with soothing beach sounds and heavily effected vocals that set the tone for a warm blend of tracks that are both inspired and inspirational. The mix begins to hit stride around track four ( "Things We Used To Do") with its chopped up vocals, stabbing horns, and a breakdown that would destroy any dance floor. As the mix continues Farina layers his signature Mood II Swing a capellas over a number of tracks providing an excellent sense of tension and release. The remainder of the mix moves deftly between instrumental tracks ("Spellbound"), deep and minimal tracks ("Somethin' Else"), and outright funky tracks ("Seriousfunkill"). Mark has certainly thrown down the gauntlet for future contributors to the San Francisco Sessions series, as this disc has both captured, and helped shape, the sound of West Coast house. --Anish Acharya

I have to admit that I love Mark Farina. His style and way of blending all the tracks on this compilation are just awesome. I've seen him at the WMC(winter music conference), L.A, San Fran, and Chicago and he has never upset me in the least bit. He is one of my favorites of all time (including Jeno, Dj Dan, Dj Heather, Onionz, Miguel Migs, all the Moontribe heads). I knew that by getting this I wouldn't regret it and you shouldn't either. It's what house is supposed to sound like. Definitely do not miss.....or you'll hate yourself.

Mark Farina created a masterpiece with this mix. While all house-heads are likely to love it, others who have not been exposed to house would love it to0. There is simply nothing to dislike here.

Update: April 6, 2007- I currently own 6 different Mark Farina CDs. Out of my entire collection of 200+CDs all 6 are in the top 15. However, if you are "new" to Mark Farina and looking to just buy one CD (for right now) pick this one. It embodies the essence of Mark Farina and is a classic on the same level as Zero 7 Simple Things, Thievery Corporation Versions and St.Germain Tourist.

This CD was realeased around five years ago and still stands as one of the best mixed house cds ever. It is completely seamless, in fact if you set it to loop continusly, the beginning and the end mixes perfectly. This disc rarely leaves my player. It is only equaled by French Sessions Vol. 1 & Vol. 3. This cd really shows the skill and creativity of the Farina. He adds beautiful vocal samples from one of the tracks, throughout the mix, this small addition ties the whole disc together. Farina is truly a madman with a sampler. Buy this disc, support great artists and indie labels.
