Wax will always have its place of honor, but MIDI controllers, laptops and other forms of technical wizardry continue to inspire DJs throughout the land. In 2004, one of the world's most popular, Sasha, performed extended aural surgery on his Involver release, molding ten tracks into a softer, vaguely ambient, yet still lethally danceable mélange. But live, the studio tricks didn't translate with such panache. So he built his own tool, a box of circuits, knobs and processors he calls MAVEN, and took it for a test run on Fundacion. The result, ironically, will make you forget all about the fancy gadgetry, since that's not the side of the brain that involves motor function. More house-oriented and playful, this is Sasha's most overtly dance floor-oriented release since 1999's Ibiza. 17 tracks are thoroughly diced and sliced, served up hot with sides of electro ("Electromagnetic") and driving pop (the album-ending one-two punch of Goldfrapp and M83, for instance). Say what you will about DJs without turntables, but no matter how innovative the means, the end goal remains the same: delirious crowds and late-night bliss. 2004 Grammy Award Nominee Sasha returns with the highly anticipated follow-up to the hottest and most critically acclaimed electronic music album of 2004: Involver. To be clear, the most exciting thing about this release is that this is not "Involver 2", the Involver concept is Sasha finding the space between artist, producer, and DJ. Fundacion on the other hand, is a whole new take on DJing. He's given up the turntables and CD players in exchange for a custom designed mixing setup that uses the Ableton "Live" software and a one of a kind controller that Sasha has dubbed "MAVEN" to create a never before heard kind of mixing.
To showcase this new technology and its sonic capablities, Sasha launched a bi-coastal residency (at New York's Crobar and Los Angeles's Avalon) with the closing party in New York being the launch party for the fruition of the entire endeavor: the Fundacion mix CD.
Fundacion will be the recorded version of what Sasha has been doing live at his residencies: effortless on-the-fly re-edits, mash ups, and flawless blends.

Listening to this soundtrack at full blast one often feels as if the Spartan and Persian forces are coming right at you, then ferociously pummeling your eardrums--and this is meant as a compliment. Tyler Bates's score is basically a modern update of the battle classic to end all battle classics: Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. On the opening cue "To Victory," Bates throws in everything he's got: powerful choral singing, massive percussion (you can almost feel the weight of those Japanese taiko drums), and of course an otherworldly female voice. All these elements are then parceled out over the following tracks, taking turns to dominate the cues, and sometimes coming together again in majestic shows of force--the music can sound absolutely humongous at times ("Submission," "Come and Get Them," "A God King Bleeds"). The most interesting development is the use throughout of electronic treatment; even when the technique is applied subtly, it's very efficient in adding a spooky dimension to the album's very sonic texture. And while you'd think an electric guitar would feel incongruous in a movie set in 480 BC, it actually injects a screaming sense of urgency into a track such as "The Hot Gates." As for that aforementioned female voice, it belongs to Iranian-born, L.A.-based Azam Ali (of the duo Vas), who makes essential contributions on tracks like "Cursed by Beauty" and "Goodbye My Love." --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description

Rereleased two decades after the motion picture debuted, the soundtrack to the movie version of America's first "tribal love-rock musical," Hair, holds up amazingly well. Performances by Treat Williams ("I Got Life"), Beverly D'Angelo ("Good Morning Starshine"), and Nell Carter ("Abie Baby" and "White Boys") are as uproarious as ever, while Cheryl Barnes's "Easy to Be Hard" remains a paralyzing gospel number. The timing could not have been better, as many trends in late-'90s music retread the musical's funk bass and evangelical vocal arrangements. But beyond a lucky coincidence, the rerelease of the music comes at a time when the spoiled offspring of the original Woodstock generation returns to the farm rioting, destroying property, and filling arrest dockets with names. If nothing else, the CD is a glorious reminder of a time when social awareness, brotherly love, and mind expansion were mantras, not marketing rhetoric on the sides of soda bottles. --Beth Massa

Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John Sanchez
