Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The term 'Dust My Broom' is rooted in the blues music of Robert Johnson. In the figurative sense, among others, this term means to "make a clean sweep" and as such indicates the beginning of something new. It's an appropriate title for the second album by Boozoo Bajou, two Nuremberg based producers Peter Heider and Florian Seyberth who have joined the !K7 Records family after years of collaboration with German independent label Stereo Deluxe. It's also an appropriate term for a group that takes a huge amount of inspiration from the diverse musical landscape of the deep-south "Bayou" culture - from blues to country to soul.

Dust My Broom marks a fresh chapter in the sound of Boozoo Bajou. Their famous laidback sound has been extended into a broader territory that borrows from blues, jazz, reggae and soca rhythms. This new territory is deep, with wide, rejuvenating references that are multi-layered. Boozoo Bajou communicate different types of "roots" music and convey their intrinsic affinity to it. Blaxploitation style soul, deep blues, Southern folk, jazz and original R&B all combine with Boozoo Bajou dub to form a beautiful mosaic.

The album features collaborations with UK based MC Top Cat (known for his work with Shy FX), country legend Tony Joe White, U-Brown, Joe Dukie, and soul crooner and voice of the infamous Foxy Brown film soundtrack, Willie Hutch.

These highly impressive guest vocalists contribute to the overall impact of Dust My Broom which despite the German conception has its roots firmly planted in the USA. Both White and Hutch were recorded in their native Tennessee and it's this TN feeling that sweeps through the album. Like taking a boat through the bayou, the Boozoo Bajou duo has created a captivating guide through exotic lands.

4 out of 5 stars Pure driving "atmosphere"..........2007-02-24

Boozoo Bajou aren't your normal, run of the mill electronica/dance outfit... they're somewhere else. Quite where can be difficult to fathom out at times but don't let that put you off because "Dust My Broom" like "Boozoo Bajou Remixes" is a clever and hugely addictive album. Soaked in driving beats, wonderful reggae & dub overlays and some ridiculously atmospheric, heavily reverbed guitar riffs, it's like Kruder & Dorfmeister meet Dr John and King Tubby with a bit of Luther Vandross thrown in for good measure. Sounds odd... well it is - check out "Keep Going", "Blast", "Killer", "Take it Slow" & "Treat Me" to see what you're in for - but then that's what makes it so good.

3 out of 5 stars Decent album, but diluted compared to Satta.......2007-01-14

3.5 stars. There are some very nice tracks on Dust My Broom. There are some grooved-out tracks that would feel at home on Satta, Boozoo's previous album that was characterized by chill, funky, instrumental, swamp mood music. And there are some nice tracks with guest vocalists that go in slightly different directions. But this follow-up album feels like too many other follow-up albums to me. It seems like these artists get some spotlight from superb debut albums, and then use that success to hire a bunch of guest stars for their next, in an effort to make something more "grand." But instead of improving on the originals, these sophomore attempts feel like disparate pieces thrown together in a manner that to a great extent abandons the elements that made the artists successful in the first place. This is a good album, but feels a bit artificially varied, and could never put you in the awed and ecstatic trance that Satta can.

4 out of 5 stars Dust My Broom.......2005-12-21

"Dust My Broom" by Boozoo Bajou is getting a lot of high praise these days and it's actually warranted. There are a lot of downtempo laidback chill albums out there and this is one of the better ones.

There's a nice mix of music between downtempo, chill, reggae/dub, and some American blues thrown in. Add all that together and cook over some slow beats and you've got "Dust My Broom".

I enjoyed it. It's a laidback, slower album, good for hanging out or de-stressing. Good stuff from the stellar K7 label.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful concept album!.......2005-10-20

I hadn't really paid attention to these guys until Six Degrees Records co-founder Bob Duskis mentioned them as one of his favourite groups in his weekly Traveler internet show ([...]). I liked the track he played in the show so I bought the album and found out that I enjoy it very much. Straight from the beginning till the very end it's pure entertainment, conscious and fun. If you can't enjoy this alone invite some friends (boys and girls) and put this on to work it's magic.

Love songs in this cd are so beautiful and honest that you cannot help singing along (Joe Dukie on "Take It Slow" is one of my favourite male singers today and doesn't fail to excel with the rasta U-Brown and Willie Hutch on "Treat Me" is doing a gorgeous job with female backups). Dancehall party burner anthem "Killer" with MC Top Cat is so cool and catchy that it's sure to move many sexy bodies on global dancefloors. "Way Down" is a deliciously creepy tune with cool spoken word by Ben Weaver, who says things like "You'll never find a religion . in a perfectly clean soul" and other cool stuff. But most of all it's the FEELING that's all over this album you know...A very nice one with a lot of street credibility and that's not really so easy to create.

Biggups to the producers Peter and Florian and their collaborators, and to the whole !K7 crew. One of the best downtempo releases for me in 2005 (and as a DJ I've heard a few).

3 out of 5 stars DONE & DUSTED.......2005-10-05

DUST MY BROOM: Boozoo Bajou made a bit of a splash (ha-de-ha) a couple of years back with DIVERS, a skanking reggae refit that found its way into a lot of DJ boxes, and ended up featuring on their debut SATTA album. SATTA was a mostly mellow, fairly low-key affair, appropriate when you consider that "satta" is a Jamaican term for "sitting", often used to indicate meditative repose. Where the debut album was mostly made up of shimmering, dusky instrumentals with occasional voices floating by deep in the studio mix, DUST MY BROOM employs various guest songwriters with predictably mixed results. The tantalizing pairing of sound system legend U Brown, and Fat Freddy's voice of milk and honey, Joe Dukie for TAKE IT SLOW ends up being rather pedestrian - nice, but no revelation - while DJ Top Cat really mashes up the firing KILLER in fine style. Elsewhere, Tony Joe White lends a suitably menacing voiceover to the opening KEEP GOING, while Ben Weaver tries much too hard with a third rate Tom Waits impersonation that borders on embarrassing. Willie Hutch is sadly underemployed with the forgettable TREAT ME, but Wayne Martin, making a return appearance after a cameo on SATTA, fares much, much better with the low-down, slow-burning blues number, MOANING. The remaining instrumentals are gems, especially the atmospheric interlude, BIWAK, and the frosty NINE BELOW ZERO. All in all, DUST MY BROOM is a decent effort with at least a couple of outstanding highlights - worth checking out.

The first Elmore James I bought and heard was a Bell-label vinyl cut-out. Of the various Elmore James CDs I've since bought -- including the multi-CD Capricorn box -- this is the one that has those recordings -- and they leave the others in the dust.

Why? Because in these the singing is deeply emotional and passionate. And that guitar work . . . !

There may be CDs with more tracks; but if they haven't the passion of these, they don't cut it. (Er -- the Elmore JAmes CD "Let's Cut It" is good -- but still not up to this one.)

4 out of 5 stars A good Tomato compilation.......2004-04-08

There is plenty of great music here, smouldering electric blues powered by Elmore James' huge voice and fiery slide guitar playing. And songs like "Dust My Broom", "The Sky Is Crying", "Person To Person", and the great Chess single "Talk To Me Baby (I Can't Hold Out)" are among the best and toughest electric blues you'll ever hear.

Fifteen songs is a bit on the skimpy side, however...a CD's running time could have easily allowed for ten more songs, and the track list is perhaps not quite as strong as on Rhino's "The Sky Is Crying", which still stands as the best single-disc overview of Elmore's too-brief recording career.
But if you've got something against Rhino Records, this one is not a bad bet at all.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A fine collection to whet your appetite.......2003-01-06

These 22 tracks offer a very good insight into the blues of the Mississippi Delta as it sounded about seventy years ago.
As usual, Indigo Records has done a great job choosing and compiling songs from various more or less famous bluesmen, ranging from the legendary Robert Johnson and his "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom", to more obscure recordings by Ishmon Bracy (a travelling companion and playing partner of Tommy Johnson) and Willie Brown.

Among the highlights are Skip James' haunting "Devil Got My Woman", Big Joe Williams' "Baby Please Don't Go", and Bukka White's intense and powerful "Shake 'Em On Down".

The sound quality varies quite a lot; Son House's legendary 1930 recordings "My Black Mama" and "Preachin' The Blues" are entombed in a hailstorm of surface noice, whereas Robert Johnson's contribution might have been recorded in the fifties.
But in spite of the snaps, crackles and pops, this is a very interesting insight into the world of the early Delta blues, and it is highly recommendable to anyone who wants to learn more about this type of music. Maybe after listening to this one, you'll want to go get the recordings by the individual artists.

(There's another early blues compilation out there as well, which doesn't stick exclusively to the Mississippi-born bluesmen : "As Good As It Gets - Country Blues" has only a couple of overlaps with this collection, and would be the perfect companion volume.)

4 out of 5 stars An excellent sampler.......2000-11-08

I can't believe that the tracks are listed without artists. To remedy the situation: tracks 1-3 are Charley Patton; tracks 4-6 are Tommy Johnson; track 7 is Ishman Bracey; track 8 is William Harris; tracks 9-11 are Son House; track 12 is Willie Brown; tracks 13 and 17 is Bukka White; track 14 is Skip James; track 15 is Big Joe Williams; track 16 is Robert Johnson; track 18 is Tommy McClennan; track 19 is Robert Petway; track 20 is Tony Hollins; track 21 is Muddy Waters; and the final track 22 is Robert Lockwood.

These recordings range from 1928 to 1941. The remastering is excellent providing a surprisingly clean sound. The major influence on this style of blues was Charley Patton, who is represented by the first three cuts. The brief album notes included with the cd gives a very brief family tree of the relationship of the other artists to Patton - as disciples, as second generation "disciples" or as "influenced by".

As several of the artists are well known - Muddy Waters, Bukka White, Robert Johnson, Son House ... this album is especially interesting in allowing one to hear something of the development of the Delta Blues style, and catch nuances of similarity and differences among the artists that escape one's attention when changing cd's.

If you enjoy any of the artists included on this album, you will enjoy the entire collection.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Electric Blues.......2000-06-20

Elmore James is one of the greatest bluesmen of all time. Although he may have not been a master musician, he had raw emotion. That is what makes a true artist.

This CD gives you a glimpse of that electric emotion. The uptempo blues of "Shake Your Money Maker" and "One Way Out" exude energy. Even the slower numbers like "The Sky is Crying" and "Something Inside of Me" are brimming with with real "heartfelt blues."

This CD is also important to find out what "the originals" sound like. I had only heard the Allman Bros. do "One Way Out" before, and Stevie Ray's cover of the "The Sky is Crying" is fantastic, but listening to this, one realizes why they chose to pay tribute to such a great bluesman.

Do yourself a favor and buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......1999-03-12

Don't let the other review throw you, they are referring to the Ronn label, not Tomato. The Tomato release is wonderful, Tomato is under Rhino records. I have played it for a lot of my friends and they all have loved it. The guitar work is fantastic and Elmore James' voice fits perfectly with it. I'd have to pull my copy out to check, but I believe this session was recorded right before Elmore James' death. Probably my favorite blues album of all time, in the top 3 anyway. If you have never heard him, buy this. It will be one of those times you find something new and can't believe you never heard it before.

1 out of 5 stars Take this disc--please!.......1998-07-08

With literally dozens of Elmore James CDs on the market, who woula thunk we could use yet another repackaging of the slide guitar master's work. But, here we go again! The secret approach that makes this CD standout far and below any other Elmore disc is that out of the measely ten tracks, only three are actually by Elmore James. We get James' signature tune "Dust My Broom," plus both sides of his seminal Chief/VJ single, "Cry For Me Baby," albeit dubbed from a very worn copy. As an unexpected bonus, we get two titles by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup (who had a record issued on the Trumpet label as Elmer James), and the little heard flip-side of the aforementioned "Broom," performed by Bobo Thomas (NOT James), with Sonny Boy Williamson on harmonica.

Homesick James' four sides date from the early 60s (c. 1963/4), with "Crossroads" being one of his better rockin' efforts.

I have enjoyed other Ronn/Jewel/Paula CDs previously, but someone really let the standards slip here. As a final note, I enjoyed the sleeve insert, advertising other blues & related CDs from their catalog--some of which I hadn't known about, but would like to order.

Rhino's 21-track collection "The Sky Is Crying: The History Of Elmore James" remains the ultimate single-disc overview of James' career, but this Charley compilation is above par as well.

Not all of James' best songs are here, and there is really no reason to choose this CD rather than the superb, well-annotated Rhino disc, but that's not to say that there is anything wrong with the music. All-time electric blues classics like the fiery boogie "Dust My Broom", the tough grind of "It Hurts Me Too", the blistering rave-up "Rollin' And Tumblin'", and the smouldering slow blues "The Sky Is Crying" are here, as well as lesser-known but equally magnificent numbers like "Sunnyland Train", "Got To Move", "Standing At The Crossroads", and Elmore's stately rendition of Robert Nighthawk's "Anna Lee". "Done Somebody Wrong" and the tremendous "Look On Yonder Wall", which features wonderful harp playing from Sam Myers, also rank among Elmore's best songs.
There is not a clunker to be found here at all, actually. The Rhino disc is just that little bit better.
