Despite Paul Oakenfold's status as "the world's most successful DJ" (according to the Guinness Book of Records, no less), and producing bands like the Happy Mondays and U2, Bunkka is his first real stab at solo superstardom. Abandoning the podium trance with which he made his name, Bunkka sees Oakenfold marrying Hybrid-like breakbeats with rock, hip-hop, and progressive house--not to mention a healthy dose of pop. Add an impressive list of guest vocalists--Tricky, Nelly Furtado, Ice Cube, Perry Farrell, Hunter S Thompson(!)--and a slew of radio-friendly tunes, and it soon becomes clear that Oakey has gone straight for the populist jugular. Fair enough, but no amount of star turns, catchy choruses, and occasional flashes of brilliance can hide the fact that Bunkka is fundamentally a patchy album. It occasionally pushes the right buttons, but its blunt, schizophrenic nature risks compromising Oakenfold's appeal with his traditional fan base. --Matt Anniss

Bunky's Pick by Cut Chemist was a pretty bad ass track.Nice old school style rap DJ with the interesting combonation of 60's style R&B.6 Variation's Of in the Rain by Madlib was interesting, the remixed beats of In The Rain were pretty good, yet why was it called 6 variation's when there were 8.In the rain by Billy wooten was O.K.,the 8 remixes by Madlib were better though and funnyer I would have to admit.I'd give it 4 and a half stars though.

5 out of 5 stars ENDLESS EMOTIONS !!!.......2007-06-19

This is the first time i hear Bunky Green's music and it's absolutely exceptional !!! He reminds me a past giant as Coltrane but in a modern or avant-guarde dimension... In this cd you can find great compositions and a well-balanced sense of improvisation with fantastic solos !!! I consider this cd very near the perfect album, no doubt, 5 stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Wild sax.......2007-06-01

This has to be one of the most interesting inside/outside takes on the art of the alto sax I have ever heard. And it comes from a 70--something. Extraordinary technique with great imagination on original and standard material. Always unpredictable, sometimes difficult, but always fascinating. 5 stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-02-17

Those of us who are fans of jazz saxophonist and composer Bunky Green have been waiting a long time for a new recording to be released. About 15 years actually. (The last one being the landmark album "Healing the Pain" released on the Delos label.) We have saxophonist Steve Coleman (a past student of Bunky's) to thank for helping to get this one recorded and released. In addition to producing the record, Coleman was also instrumental in hooking Bunky up with the rhythm section.

After 15 years of built up anticipation one might worry the actual experience of listening to this album might disappoint. That it might not live up to expectations. Well, there's no need to worry here. This record lives up to and exceeds all expectations. The rhythm section, composed of Jason Moran on piano, Lonnie Plaxico on bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums, does a great job of both supporting and pushing Bunky. Moran's solos in particular are quite captivating. He really does have a strong personal voice on the piano. But what really stands out, without surprise really, is the alto sax of Bunky Green. That this man isn't listened to and talked about more in the world of jazz is really a crime. His playing is so direct and honest that it almost catches you off guard. There's no ego or BS w/ Bunky. What you see (or in this case, hear) is what you get. (And having been lucky enough to study with him in college I can tell you that he's just as beautifully honest and unfiltered a person as he is a player.) It's quite obvious throughout this recording that Bunky's skill on the saxophone has only increased w/ age. From the point of view of sheer technique, his playing is really quite astounding. But Bunky never plays for the sake of showing off or impressing. All feats of technical prowess are there simply as a means of expressing something deeply personal. His technique frees him to go anywhere he (or the music) wants to. At times it's aggressive, other times subtle, but always very honest and personal. Nobody sounds like Bunky. Listening to this album you start wondering more and more why he isn't hailed as one of the more important voices in jazz today. Possibly it's because of the lack of recordings, or possibly he's just not considered "marketable" enough. Whatever the reason, let's hope that this new record is a sign of much more to come, and let's hope that it doesn't take another 15 years to get here!

In short, I highly recommend this album. I believe it's one of the more important cd's to come out in recent years and you should buy it! (Direct enough for ya? :D )

    Album Description

Although the great Charlie Parker and John Coltrane were among saxophonist Bunky Green's strongest early influences, he soon went on to develop his own personal style that made him one of the most promising artists of the 1970s. Green broke out of the jazz mold and began incorporated numerous genres, including rock, eastern music, classical, gospel and blues, into his playing. After several years as a sideman for Mingus, Freddie Hubbard, Yusef Lateef, Cannonball Adderly and Roland Kirk, to name a few, Green stopped playing conventional jazz and began studying new expressive techniques (it often seems that he uses his saxophone to imitate the human voice), these musical innovations are brought together on this amazing 1977 Vanguard release, finally available again on Comet/Universe. 6 tracks in a cardboard gatefold sleeve. 2003.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Night Music!!.......2003-02-11

Bunky Green's late 1970's sound was "Smooth" before the term was coined to describe an entire genre of laid back melodic Jazz artists. Playing in the vein of Hank Crawford, Stanley Turrentine and Grover Washington, Jr., Green's "Transformation" bridged the gap between Charlie Parker's improvisational leaps and Smooth Jazz's melodic and funky radio friendly sound. On this recording, the music tackles the challenge of providing the perfect background for romance.

This recording is great "Night" music, pure & simple. Put this disc on when the mood is right for romance. "I won't Last A Day Without You" is a good warm-up piece for good conversation, holding hands and glancing into each other's eyes. By the time "Europa" arrives, the wine should be kicking in and the slow dancing begins. You will be in a completely relaxed mood when "Feelings" arrives and the party turns serious. Things start shifting to hot and heavy when "The Lady from Ancona" winds down and "Chillon" and "Funk Ain't A Word" provide A great rhythmic pulse for some serious fun. All that is left is to either hit the repeat button or wish you had a quiet ballad to help you drift off into dreamland.

Throughout this entire affair, the band is right on the mark - fresh, stimulating and vibrant as they move from warm and moody to flat out hot and funky. Green's Alto Sax is crystal clear and beautiful. His improvisations are sensuous and very thought provoking. The band sounds very 70's in both vibe and sound, with the keyboards sounding somewhat dated, but the mood and pulse of this recording is right on the money.

After listening to this music for over 25 years, It is still capable of "Transforming" an average night into a very passionate experience. I hope it does the same for you - Enjoy!

      Album Description

Despite nearly five decades (from 1960 to present) of musical activity, Bunky Green's meager discography consists of no more than 32 separate sessions. Green's discography can be divided into two separate periods: his emergence in Chicago (1960-1967), and his reemergence in New York (1976-2004). This edition showcases his finest recordings from the earlier Chicago period. Features two complete albums: Playin' For Keeps and Testifyin' Time. 17 tracks total. Lonehill Jazz. 2007.

      Album Description

Comprised of noted musicians and sound engineers Emily Joyce and Rafter Roberts, Bunky has emerged as one of San Diego's premier live bands, nominated for Best New Artist in Sign On San Diego's Best of 2003 and Best Pop at the 2003 San Diego Music Awards. 'Born to Be a Motorcycle,' the result of three years of work by these perfectionists, promises to surprise even those who think they've heard it all. This ear-tickling collection of weird pop bliss touches all the bases with a blend of punk, art-pop and even ballads. Combine that with a bagful of quirks, expert engineering and absurd humor, and you have an album as lively as an armful of eels. Bunky rocks and croons with equal skill, sometimes in the same song. Joined by a cast of San Diego all-stars (members of Rocket From The Crypt, Castanets, Pinback and more), Bunky emerges full-grown and poised to fly.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Born for this.......2006-12-26

One thing you can say for Bunky -- they have more than enough energy!

This oddball San Diego band blasts out in "Born To Be a Motorcycle," with their rollicking hybrid of arty indiepop, sultry jazz and colourful punk. It takes a little while to get into their sound fully, but it's worth the ride once you've tottered through it. Just don't be surprised if you get dizzy.

"All the kids/alone in the kitchen... I just gotta know/I don't wanna die!" howls Emily Joyce over a frenetic rock beat and a cataclysm of horns. The sound softens up a little with "Yes/No," a peppy pop tune with handclaps, periodic brass blasts, and silky vocals, "If you're cookin' in the kitchen... all the spices that you're missing/are in my heart my heart my heart..."

And then Bunky kicks the style of the first two songs over, for a jazzy folky ballad that erupts halfway through into a rollicking guitar tune ("I was born to be a motorcycle!"). After that, anything goes: slightly demented pop tunes, surreal experimental stuff, dreamlike folkpop, and the shimmering finale "Lipstick Life."

Bunky is a bit more crazed and rollicking than many of Asthmatic Kitty's veteran bands, and has more in common with the recent Shapes and Sizes album. This band is willing to try anything once -- punk, screeching experimental, shoegazer, and generally sounding like Yo La Tengo getting drunk.

It's also a minor superband, with members of Black Heart Procession, Pinback and the Castanets, as well as the two leading people: Rafter Roberts and Emily Joyce, who have worked nonmusically (recording and engineering) with the Liz Janes, the Rapture, Gogol Bordello, the Starlight Mints, and many others.

In this band, however, they lend their talents in a more artistic way: strong vibrant guitar, blasts of energetic brass, smashing percussion, and a colourful dash of synth to make the peppy tunes and surrealistic lyrics pop out. Joyce's high warbly voice is a good counterpart for Roberts' smoother, if somewhat less prominent voice.

Bunky may be born to be a motorcycle, but they were also apparently born to make some solid, fun indiepop. This debut album is one of Asthmatic Kitty's weirdest and most amusing.

Bunky is one the baddest living Jazz Musicians!! He is soulful, adventuresome, inventive, oringinal, and swingin too. A beautiful person and it comes through in the music.

      5 out of 5 stars Highest recommendation.......2003-01-08

Mr. Green has a beautiful sound on the alto saxophone. His improvisations are sophisticated with a lot of umph. He was a major influence on Steve Coleman and I can definitely hear Mr. Green's complexity in Steve's music (Steve takes it to a different level). Mr. Green has a way of taking jazz standards and definitely putting his own personal stamp on it. His playing of the slower tunes almost brings tears to my eyes. The music is never boring. He also has a stellar rhythm section of Billy Childs (piano), Art Davis (bass) and Ralph Penland (drums). I'm always looking for fresh sounds and this recording definitely hits the spot. 5 out of 5 stars Best Sheppards compilation available!.......2006-01-17

The Sheppards were one of the most underrated 60's doo wop groups in Chicago history. As the story goes, their original master tapes were destroyed in a fire which could be the reason for a lack of re-issues over the years. With strong lead vocals by Murray Eskridge and Millard Edwards, the Sheppards were in every way as important as the Dells, Spaniels, El Dorados, Moonglows, Magnificents and Flamingos. Many if not all of the songs here are probably remastered from phonograph records and Westside of Europe did a decent job of restoring this material with the exception of 1 or 2 selections like "Society Girl". Chris Columbo is playing organ on many of the songs and there is excellent guitar work by Phil Upchurch, Lefty Bates and the Sheppards own guitarist too. Tragic (both versions),Glitter In Your Eyes, Just Like You, Come Home Come Home, So In Need For Love and most of their known recordings are included in this package. Any person who is a doo wop fan should have this cd.
