The line on Strait is that if you've heard one of his albums, you've heard them all, an assessment that could only be made by someone who really had heard just one of his albums. Following a career trend that had been building for some time, Strait's 1998 One Step at a Time is probably the least traditional album of his career. Throughout, Strait uses twangy instrumentation to create country music out of pop songs, as on the island-sounding "I Just Want to Dance With You," the impossibly catchy "True," the bluesy "Remember the Alamo," and the pop-rocking Mavericks-sound-alike "We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This." One Step at a Time does have one thing in common with previous Strait albums, though: it's one of the year's finer mainstream country efforts. --David Cantwell
Customer Reviews:
BELOW AVERAGE GEORGE.......2005-01-02
I actually agree with some of the critics about this CD, there is a total lack of humor and western swing on this CD. I happen to think "Maria", "Remember The Alamo", "That's The Breaks", and "We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This" are the best tracks on this CD. However, NOT ONE of them is a top flight GS song. For example: There are EIGHT songs on "Beyond The Blue Neon" (The title track, "Hollywood Squares", "Overnight Success", "Ace In The Hole", "Baby's Gotten Good At Goodbye", "Angel, Angelina", and Oh Me, Oh My Sweet Baby" are all better than this CD's BEST song "Maria". I would view it as his second to the bottom CD (Only his CD "George Strait is worse). But below average George, is still better then most.
Bought it twice!.......2003-12-10
After reading some of the other interviews, I am wondering why other people do not love this CD as much as I do. I have purchased it two times! The first time was for my country loving husband. We enjoyed listening to it for a while, only to lose it some time later. I purchased a George Strait greatest hits CD thinking it might be better than the lost CD, but there was no comparison. After months of being without One Step at a Time, I was not happy until I bought it again! I especially like the first two tracks, I Want to Dance With you and One Step at a Time. It is my opinion this is George Strait at his best!
One of George's Best cd.......2003-09-16
This is one of the best cd Goerge strait has ever made. It has great songs. like,"neon row", Remember the alamo, I just want to dance with you, That's the breaks.
Every one of the saongs are great. Listen to it and see if it isn't the best. GS is the king of country music
One Step at a Time.......2003-05-01
i didn't think this album was bad. it's just some of his albums are much better, but some of the songs on here on great. "true", "why not now", "you haven't left me yet", "neon row", and "remember the alamo" are all very good songs in my opinion. no george strait collection is complete without it.
George's worst album to date.......2003-04-25
George Strait is the best country singer out there today and he has been the best for so many years but on One step at a time I heard such a bad Nashville Pop kind of sound he just did not sound like his usual self. The singles were terrible except True but even that song isn't typical George Strait. What the heck is with all of the slow ballads on here and they are long songs to some of them go for just under 5 minutes. George Strait luckily bounced back to his usual self in Always never the same and by 2001 The Road less Traveled was such a better album full of great singles and better songs George Strait is still going strong today with new songs and will be around for many years and I hope this album gets put away forever because it stinks!

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

The Beauty of the Male Voice.......2006-05-04
I was fortunate to hear The Male Choir of St. Petersburg perform at the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg, and was stunned by the power and beauty of their song. The director, aware that the deep, resonate voices struck a chord within each member of the audience, held the final note of each song until it echoed from the rafters. The songs are usually traditional Russian songs, but are not religious chants, as many people seem to expect - one song, called "O My Field" is an ode to a farmer's plot of ground. I recommend this album, a great opportunity to revel in the beauty of the male voice.

Drop dead gorgeous.......2005-07-04
Every now and then you get a CD come along where some really outstanding artist allows themself to just let their hair down for a moment. Of course it has to be done with aplomb and thorough good taste adding their unique touch of brilliance while sucessfully avoiding any hint of kitch. Russian Early Music pioneer Anatoly Grindenko here records songs from the time of Tsarist Russia. These are songs that transient political regimens would have tried to replace in the popular affection with political songs. Yet somehow these songs have survived in the hearts and affections of the Russian people and this peasant tradition of folk song that refused to die is presented with Grindenko's usual expertise and sung expertly with the utmost affection. In fact the songs were always sung by this choir for their own private fun but excluded from 'serious' concert performances. The quality of singing, as can be expected under Grindenko's expert choral direction, is superb througout. The end result is a lovely CD that can be highly recommended to anybody who just loves to listen to beautiful singing. After all the works of Tchaikovsky, Borodin and Stravinsky draw heavily on Russian folk song as a rich source of thematic material but any serious music lover would enjoy this CD just as much with its range of songs ranging from boisterous to charming to melancholy. Opus 111, as usual, provide expertly engineered sound to match. The end result is a drop dead gorgeous CD that will delight anyone lucky enough to discover this secret gem.
Brilliant !.......2001-12-26
This recording is a fantastic example of the russian choral tradition. Wonderful selections sung with obvious passion .The rousing patriotic tunes will make you want to march to the front, the romantic ballads will make you wish you never left and the songs of hearth and homeland will make you inch closer to your loved ones. If you have a passion for things "russian" this one just might keep you occupied for a while.

Customer Reviews:
Perhaps Kottke's most accessible vocals on one disc.......2007-02-21
Strange to consider writing a Leo Kottke review and starting off about his vocals--but it's plain that his weary/tired groan finally finds its comfort zone. Credit T-Bone Burnett for production wisdom and selection for that--and Leo's ability with his fragmented rambling to minimize damage where possible ("The Bungle Party").
Instead, he pours some warmth into the father-in-law-joke of "Saginaw, Michigan" and the spirit of generosity on Kris Kristofferson's "Here Comes that Rainbow Again." It's not easy but certainly possible, however, to overlook the contemplative "Starving," "Running All Night Long" or the monotonous "The Wrong Track." Better yet, "Rings" and "Julie's House" are vibrant with sensitivity (and Emmylou Harris's background vocals), but the winner is "I'll Break Out Again Tonight," a ballad of a love-and-homesick convict. Points also for polite guitar noodling on "Mr. Fonebone."
I wish though that he had included here the version of "Little Martha" that appeared on the Chrysalis instrumental package; he and Albert Lee made that float on glass slippers.
A fine blend of Kottke's voice and musicianship .......2007-01-02
In a recent review of Leo Kottke's `Great Big Boy', I savaged the artist's choice of songs and vocal stylings on that disc. I recommended 1983's `Time Step' to Amazon searchers instead.
'Time Step', from Leo's Chrysalis stage of metamorphosis, is an excellent mixture of well-chosen ballads and great instrumentals.
Leo and producer T-Bone Burnett select some sure-fire matches of melody and lyric to Leo's voice. `Rings', `Julie's House', and `Running All Night Long' are well-suited to Leo's clear and manly baritone. Emmylou Harris' stellar backing vocals in all the tunes don't hurt none either.
Leo's version of `Saginaw, Michigan' is perhaps the best I've ever heard since Lefty Frizzell's original. Maybe it's his flawless slide guitar playing.
However, it is the honesty of Kottke's voice that is the key to its appeal. You can feel it in his rendition of Kris Kristofferson's sentimental "Here Comes That Rainbow Again".
I always love surprise bonuses. And on `Time Step' we're treated to a twelfth track not identified on the label, a delightful version of the Allman Brothers' instrumental, `Little Martha'.
Quality, balance, honesty, and bonus. How can you beat that?
Leo Produces Another Winner.......2004-12-23
Having followed Leo Kottke since 1974 I can honestly say this album is a keeper. All the tunes are vintage Kottke but "Rings", written as sort of a joke by Alex Harvey and Ed Reeves, is fantastic. I've seen Leo perform this tune live several times and I'd really love to have a recording of it without the backup band. Emmylou Harris was also a nice surprise on this record. I never got this particular album when I was trying to get everything Leo recorded as soon as it came out but found a vinyl copy at Amoeba Records in LA last year.
Good Stuff.......2004-09-02
I have been a fan of Leo since his first album, and I have this one on vinyl. It is worth having if only for Bungle Party, which is great word-salad, 'shoe-leather futures, with memories of dirt'; and the beautiful, lilting 'Julie's House ', with a guest vocal from non-other than Emmylou Harris, whose sandals I am unworthy to loosen
Wonderful blend of music.......1999-12-27
This is a cassette I used to have and lost years ago. I've been hoping to replace it for many years but could never find it....Just found it today and bought it again. It was like finding a long lost friend! I love several of the tracks which have a quasi-country feel, and am thrilled to have it in my collection again.
