About the Artist
Growing up In Texas, miles from anywhere, Shea D'Lynn spent many hours traveling in the family car as a child. "I grew up in the country, and it was a 25 mile drive to Lamesa. The radio kept us company." All that time spent riding in the backseat of her mother's Oldsmobile had a major impact on Shea's musical development. "I probably knew every song on the radio. My mother and I sang along." It didn't take long for Shea's mother to realize that her daughter had a gift.
Singing with her mother wasn't an event isolated to just the car. At the urging of her Sunday school teacher, Shea began singing solos at church by the age of nine. Her mother would harmonize with her, much to the delight of the congregation. "The church I went to was very small, so small that it didn't have a choir. Since there were so few singers, I got to sing in front of the church at least once or twice a month." The enthusiasm and encouragement of the little country church was an excellent environment for Shea to develop her talents.
Years flew by and Shea found herself at a crossroad in her young life. After graduating high school and following the advice of her parents, she enrolled at Texas A&M University. "I decided to put music on hold for a while. I knew that getting a college education was important to my growth, and I was really worried and preoccupied about how I would support myself if I couldn't make it as a singer. Plus, I really wanted to be an Aggie." But the urge to perform was inescapable. While still attending Texas A&M, she began pursuing a career in music. Through a sorority sister, Shea was introduced to Jeff Sturms, co-producer of her upcoming album. Shea began recording demos and sitting in with bands around the area.
Shea once again found herself at a crossroad. This time following her heart, she put her music career on hold for the second time. In March of 1999, Shea and Trey, her husband, welcomed their son Callen into the world. Two months later she walked the stage of Reed Arena at Texas A&M and received her much deserved degree in Marketing. Trey and Shea married in June, and the family moved to Houston.
Again, the desire to sing and perform resurfaced, and Shea once again began to chase her dreams. "I got in touch with Jeff and asked him if he'd be interested in working with me. I was anxious to get going after taking an almost two year hiatus." The reunion with Jeff lead to new opportunities, and Nashville came calling. " I had intended on doing a project in Austin after Trey's job brought us here. Then Wes came into the picture and changed my whole focus." While on the road, Wes Hightower and Jeff began to discuss producing an artist together. Jeff and Wes are both members of George Strait's band, and Jeff recommended Shea for the job. "This is a wonderful opportunity for me. Wes and Jeff are so gifted musically, and I've already learned so much from them. And the music we've created, I'm very proud of."
After the many miles she's traveled, Shea anticipated her next journey, her trip to Nashville to record her freshman effort. Titled The Only Road I Know, the album is a blend of traditional country with rock and blues influences. "I grew up listening to all kinds of music. My dad is such a music lover, and he exposed me to a diverse mix of sounds." Shea sights Martina McBride, Emmy Lou Harris and Sheryl Crow as her major musical influences. "I love what these women do with their voices, the way they speak to us, the way they touch us. I strive to reach people the way they do."
Shea is anxiously awaiting the first milestone in her career. Set for release August 6, 2002, The Only Road I Know marks the start of Shea's singing career. "This is were I begin. It feels so good to finally get down to business, and I can't wait to go down the road that lies ahead."
