Customer Reviews:
GREAT ITEM.......2007-06-27
I ORDERED THIS ITEM FOR MY SON WHO LOVES DISNEY MUSIC. IT CAME IN GREAT CONDITION AND QUICKLY. LISTENING TO THE CD,S BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF MY YOUNGER DAYS.
Slow shipping & Minor Damage.......2007-05-14
My kids (2 & 3 yrs.) like the music that they have heard before. There are many songs included that are less popular. If your kids are like mine, you will be hitting the "next" button frequently. I ended up burning a cd of the songs that they liked. This worked out well.
The Shipping was fairly slow. It took about two weeks (10 business days) to arrive through standard mail. This probably wouldn't have been so bad, but most of the other orders that I have placed through Amazon have arrived in 5 business days or less.
The product itself seemed to be damaged during manufacture. All of the CDs were lose in the cases. It appears that they didn't seat properly, and during the seating process the tines in the center of the case that hold the CDs in place were broken. None of the discs were damaged or scratched.
Grrrrrreat!.......2007-05-03
This is the best product for every Disney junkie, i LOVE it! It has just about every classic song ever made. I love it, and the price is VERY reasonable for 125 songs... it's a MUCH better deal than buying the other disney classic cd's individualy...so BUY IT!! like tigger says: ITS "GRRRRREEEAAAT!!!"
This CD is Awesome.......2007-04-12
It has all the good disney songs sung like in the movies with the original singers. My daughter loves it.
Love It!.......2007-03-10
I am a HUGE Disney fan and this is definitely an essential set for anyone who loves Disney or Disney movies. I play these CDs whenever I'm stressed out and I can't help but smile and sing along. Great for adults and kids :) It will definitely bring back great childhood memories!

More than practically any other African musician, King Sunny Ade has enjoyed unparalleled longevity, both at home and with Western music fans. Born into Nigerian royalty (the "King" is not merely a courtesy title), he embarked upon his chosen career path early, incorporating traditional rhythms and percussion, chilled-out vocals, sinuous bass lines, and especially the wacked-out, psychedelic guitar of Bob Ohiri. During the '60s and '70s, Ade's mature sound slowly evolved; although he was years away from an international breakthrough, his trademark stylistic markers were already in place, hastening him toward historic doings. The bandleader's high, nasal voice, wreathed in talking drums and shakers, echoed by a call-and-response choir, reflected Yoruba folkways along with hints of Muslim and Christian religious and secular music. By now, Ade's songs had become longer and more subtle; many of his intricate, gradually unfolding sets of themes and variations were clocking in at twenty minutes-plus on record and over an hour live. As on Shanachie's excellent Best of the Classic Years (2003), these tunes, although unquestionably landmark recordings, have hardly been heard outside of the maestro's homeland. They constitute a crucial document of Ade's first flush of local fame, and if the sound quality is slightly over-resonant, it is also remarkably vivid and clear. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:
Great CD!!!!.......2006-07-22
I have all 5 CD's and it is an awesome collection! All of my favorite songs are on the 5 CD's and every Disney fan like I am should have this collection!
Disappointed with these CD series..........2005-10-02
There isn't one single song from the 1977 classic "The Rescuers" included in this collection, I don't see why Disney chose not to include any of those songs which are all gorgeous, when they did include unmemorable and weak songs instead, I've seen these CD's with songs that aren't half as good as "Tomorrow is Another Day," "The Journey," "Someone's Waiting for You" or "Rescue Aid Society."
Very disappointing, The Rescuers is a fine Disney classic and it should be included with all of the others.
Great Idea and a Wonderful CD.......2002-02-01
The idea of issuing musical selections from Disney films, features and other areas of their world of entertainment is really quite pleasing. If you love the world that Walt Disney created and has continued on to this day, this CD gives you little musical vignettes across that span of time that are very nostalgic and uplifting. I really love Track 13: THE MONKEY'S UNCLE sung by Annette Funicello and The Beach Boys. Track 4: "Under the Sea" from THE LITTLE MERMAID is just wonderful. This is a great CD.
This is an awesome album!.......2001-12-20
This album is great because it has many songs that everyone in the family can agree upon. Like most teens, my parents aren't too thrilled with what i usually listen to, but with Classic Disney we all sing along while i remember movies from when I was younger, like The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, and my parents remember some of their old favorites, like The Parent Trap and originally seeing Peter Pan. This is a must-have for anyone who loves Disney movies and wants to share the songs with their kids or little brothers and sisters.
Simply Irresistable.......2001-11-24
I think that Disney music captures our emotions and what a better way to get them then through a cullmination of the best Disney songs! Volume 1 contains all the newest hits as well as the greatest classics. I urge anyone to buy this cd...it will only open your heart and bring you back to your childhood!

Customer Reviews:
a fine overview from Garland's years with Capitol.......2007-02-24
Judy Garland recorded for the Capitol label between 1955 and 1965. During that period she made several wonderful albums (including "Miss Show Business" in 1955, "Judy" in 1956, and "That's Entertainment" in 1959). She also recorded several unreleased singles and demos, many of which are making their CD debut with this double-disc release.
Aside from her moviemaking days with M-G-M, this was probably her most fruitful creative partnership. The producers at Capitol perfectly understood her unique talents and assigned projects to her that were in keeping with what she was interested in at the time.
Garland was a great supporter of the little-known Broadway musicals. Only Garland would record "Sweet Danger" from the notorious flop KEAN. "The Worst Kind of Man" and "The Red Balloon" both come from her super-rare album The Letter.
Garland also performs the ultimate apologist ballad, "As Long As He Needs Me", from OLIVER! The role of Nancy was one that Garland displayed interest in playing on the stage, although with her hectic schedule it never quite happened. Kurt Weill's "It Never Was You" is another gorgeous ballad which Garland nails perfectly (and was later recycled for her final movie, I Could Go On Singing).
This disc is filled with the classic Judy numbers we all love, plus a handful of tantalising unreleased tracks. A very fine album indeed.
[Capitol 7243 5 39281 2 4]
A great collection to have!.......2007-02-01
This cd has all the best of Garland and her amazing range in a song. I find this album to be on the same almost has carnegie hall.
Judy's Back!!.......2007-01-12
Judy Garland, 1922 to 1969 - she is well known for her role as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz.
This 2 CD set shows her in a new, to some, light: a mature song seller. Indeed she displays an extraordinary range of emoitions on this CD set from big belting numbers, Come Rain or Come Shine, What Now My Love?, When The Sun Comes Out to emoitonal ballads with heartache, Last Night When We Were Young, It Never Was You, with everything in-between. She tackles fun throwaway numbers such as Purple Eater and Don't Rain On My Parade, and very 60's type songs, How Long Has This Been Going On, and The Worst Kind of Man.
Each and every number sounds wonderful, as if she recorded them very recently. That ritch, wonderful voice fills each and every song as only she can. You can hear the change in her voice from the middle 50's to middle 60's. In the 50's tracks it is very full, round and powerful.
Towards the middle 60's some of that fullness is gone, but it's still Judy Garland. It's intresting to hear her on a few selections when she had thorat probelms such as the selections from Garland at The Grove - having heard about her voice not being great I was susprised to hear how wonderful it still was. Likewise her aborted Judy Takes Boradway album, the selections here show her to be still in wonderful voice, albeit husky.
The included booklet provides details on every song and what orginal album it is from. WIth a wonderful selection of songs, from classic Judy to different Judy this CD belongs in every Judy Garland fan's collection.
(On a side note The Letter is making it's CD debut THIS April)
Classic Indeed!.......2006-08-03
Judy Garland- the Capitol Years, has become one of my favorite CDs. From obvious favorites like "Over the Rainbow", "Rock-a-Bye Your Baby", and "Swanne" to the more obscure "Sweet Danger", and the songs from "The Letter" and "Maggie May", this is a perfect Garland compilation. Perfect for long time fans of Judy and better yet, perfect for those who have never heard her sing before; you are in for a treat!
My favorite Garland!.......2005-04-28
I've always loved Judy Garland's voice best in the 50's and early 60's when she was recording both studio and live albums for "The Tower" Capitol Records. Her voice could sound powerful enough to bend the walls of Carnegie Hall yet also retain a purity to break the hearts of her lsteners. These recordings show the emotional-depth that only Judy Garland (and also Frank Sinatra) could put into a song--an intimacy that makes you feel "as if she's singing staright to you." You can hear the heartache in her voice when she sings the sad numbers yet also feel the liveliness and energy of the fast songs. There was nothing that that voice couldn't do! I highly recommend this CD. It truly represents Garland at the peak of her powers as "The World's Greatest Entertainer!"

Not Definitive, But An Excellent Start!.......2007-03-07
Blind Willie McTell was one of the all-time greatest blues guitarists and singers of his or any other era: He is definitely one of my favorites, and this CD compilation is highly recommended. One of the reviewers mentioned that this is not the definitive Blind Willie McTell CD, and I would have to agree. I would also recommend two other CD's by Blind Willie McTell: "Atlanta Twelve-String," and "Pig'n'Whistle Red." As I am writing this review I am listening to his music, and it is a pure joy to the ears. My era of blues is mainly from the 1920's to the the late 1940's. And Blind Willie McTell fits right in there with the greats of his era. I never tire of his music.
This CD, "The Classic Years 1927-1940" is just magnificent. This CD is partly a focus of McTell's early years when he recorded for Lomax. And although McTell was not a 'Delta Blues' performer, he was a bridge between the Delta Blues and the more refined East Coast sound: Hence the title given by many as 'East Coast Piedmont Style. The CD itself consists of 4 discs, which were digitally remastered. McTell's 12-string guitar sounds just magnificent on the CDs. And as some reviewers have written; it almost sounds as if two or more guitarist's are playing; but there are not; at least not on the early sides. That's how great he was!
You cannot beat the number of songs or the price of this JSP issued DVD. Considering the time period that these recordings were done, and the sound equipment that was used by Lomax, there is some surface noise on the Lomax sides. Not much though. And unless we have a time machine, there is really little technology can do about this. But this does not detract from the beautiful sounds of Blind Willie McTell. I would list some of his songs played on these four Discs; however, there is a listening sample here on amazon; and although it is not as good as your own system or speakers, it does give you ALL the tracks listed with a music sample. The man was just great: and this is a great McTell collection. If you do not have Blind Willie McTell in your Blues collection, then it is not a complete Blues collection. This CD is highly recommended.
A good starter.......2006-03-13
This is great, but it's still not all the McTell you need. To really have everything, you'll need his later recordings, titled 'Atlanta Twelve-String,' 'Pig'n'Whistie Red' and 'Last Session.' Of these three, the last one is for completists only, but the first two are not only stunning, but stunning in more modern sound quality. His voice had matured and lowered quite a bit before these more modern recordings were made, but (except for the last session where he was not only aging but drunk as well) it sounds very strong and vibrant.
The JSP box here, on the other hand, focuses on his early sides and the field recordings for Lomax. Unless you own these cuts on other CDs, this is really worth getting.
However, it is NOT delta blues as some reviewers like to say. Blind Willie was not from the delta and does not play in the delta style.
All the Mctell you need.......2006-01-31
This is the only Blind Willie McTell box set you need. This four disc set gives great representaion of his work. Im not a huge fan of the female accompaniment, but its not terrible, its just not up to par with lets say Bessie Smith. His guitar work is incredible, and the drity quality should be well appreciated because of the age of the recordings. McTell has a voice that greatly captures the sound of the old time blues, the delta blues style, not the Chicago style. Also proved to be a great influence to modern blues musicians.
Nobody sings the Blues like Blind Willie Mc Tell.......2005-09-03
A wonderful resource for those interested in The Blues. Willie sang and played both slide and 12 string guitar and whether he performed novelty numbers, gospel or the blues, he was brilliant.
Apart from the music, this set is worthwhile for the interview with John Lomax on disc D. I cringed to hear Lomax ask Willie about songs about 'complaining songs' such as 'Ain't it hard to be a [...], and I had to remind myself that Lomax was 'of his time' and using a term that had currency with both black and white people at that time. Willie cleverly moves the conversation along and then we are back to the music which is breathtaking. This set should be in the collection of everyone who loves the blues.
Brilliant,get it........2004-07-01
I came to this box set having heard nothing of the music of Blind Willie McTell,I just thought I'd take a chance.I do not regret it for one solitary second, the whole set is brilliant.Unlike some more famous blues artists,Mr.McTell sang in a soft voice that displays his regional accent. He sang clear and he sang sweet. His guitar playing is fantastic,it's hard to believe that there is only one player on a lot of these recordings, but's that indeed how it is,and thanks to the clarity of the vast majority of the recordings,I would recommend this set without reserve.

Brilliant, birlliant, brilliant juju........2007-05-08
I'm not what you'd call a "world music buff" (for one thing, I hate the term "world music," which to me seems unspeakably anglocentirc) but, as the old cliche goes, I sure do know what I like. And good golly, I absolutely adore the music of King Sunny Ade. As you've probably heard elsewhere, King Sunny was a Nigerian innovator who was among the leading purveyors of Juju, an intensly rhythmic (at some points hypnotic) brand of Nigerian party music. On stage, Ade and his group would improvise, sometimes stretching songs to over an hour in length, while rapt audienced would pummel the dance floor beneath their feet. These performances could last all night, and its easy to see why- with music this deep, dancable, and irresistably good, stopping is no easy task.
In the sixties and seventies, Ade was something of a pan-African celebrity (and, sadly, virtually unkown in the West). By the time the 80s rolled around, Western record label suits would finally get hip to Ade and attempt to turn him into the next Bob Marley, cleaning up his sound and insisting that he perform more songs in English. Thankfully, this compilation sidesteps all that, and presents us instead with 10 tracks from his pre-Western heydey. Recorded in the mid-sixties and seventies, these tracks are utterly astounding: Ade's voice is perfect, a sinewey blast of hedonistic sunshine- his vocals are quivering, spasming, halucinatory, and hypnotic, and it's only one small part of the group's sound! As you can probably imagine, the rhythm lies at the heart of it all- and that is an astoundingly good thing, when you consider how utterly amazing they are: They're dense, multilayered, sustained pulses of hypnotic energy, insinuating everything and begging even the most concrete-hipped listener to dance the years away. Rumbling, taut drums are driven along by creeping maracas, explosive metallic bursts, and percussion solos so versetile that they seem to be talking to you. And the guitars! Oh my goodness, those guitars! It's obvious from the first few minutes of the first track, "Snny Ti De," that the King and his compatriots are not affraid to make some noise. The band employs layer upon layer of distorted electric guitars- the sound here is raw, vicious, and explosive. It's a sort of sweaty freeform joy, in which each player launches off into nerve-shattering solos seemingly at whim, making his strings sing, bellow, screech, and moan. Together, the guitarists assault the listener (in a good way, of course) with violent licks, swaggering chord progressions, and almost bluesy riffs, kicking up thunderstorms of feedback and distortion, and generally putting most Western rock bands to shame. The songs also last for quite some time- this disc, despite containing only 6 songs (the first five tracks run together, forming a powerful, cohesive epic), lasts for over an hour. Suffice to say, these guys know how to jam. The end result is a platter of raw, cathartic party music, a crank-up-the volume-and-pound-yoyrself-silly masterpiece. If you like to hear enjoyable sounds, get this now. NOW!
Juju Juju.......2005-11-28
This is dance music of the transcendent variety, with swaying rhythms and the lilting, heavily-channeled guitars the Nigerian style known as juju became famous for. These are early recordings, taken mostly from the late 1960s and early 1970s, long before he landed a record contract in the West and briefly made inroads via the emerging "worldbeat" movement of the 1980s. Largely sung in Yoruba, with two tracks pushing past 17 minutes in length, and instrumental more often than not, it's easy to see how Ade was a harder sell than Bob Marley. But don't let any small cultural differences keep you away from the delightful artistry of King Sunny. The music both lifts your spirits and moves your feet.
raw Juju.......2003-08-22
If you like the groove of Juju but are put off by the over-production of Ade's 1980s albums that brought him renown in the states, or even if you're just a fan of Juju music in general this is a good collection. Apparently culled from his recordings between 1967-74, the tracks here have a funkier sound, with some of the production sounding like a distant cousin of dub reggae or acid rock.
The first five tracks (out of 10) comprise an 18 minute medley from one album, a choice I find slightly strange considering the producers supposedly had 12 albums of material to choose from. In addition, track 6 is the complete 18 minute version of Synchro System, later rerecorded and made into something of a hit in the US. Still, the medley really burns, and seems worth including in its entirety. The other four tracks are solid as well, and in all, the CD provides more than 70 minutes of the best Juju ever recorded.

As the golden-haired, frog-throated chanteuse of the Velvet Underground, the German born Nico cast a decadent spell. Her cool, detached performances, in direct opposition with the feel-good hippie vibe of the 1960s, influenced the punk scene of the 1970s. This collection serves as an excellent sampler of Nico's work, beginning with her first single for Rolling Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham's then-new Immediate label (a 1965 cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "I'm Not Sayin'") and spanning her Velvet Underground contributions and her stunning first four solo albums. Her ethereal cover of the Doors' "The End" matched with material by producer John Cale, Lou Reed, and Jackson Browne, as well as her own doomy compositions, illuminate her unusual sense of style. The silent hero here, however, is Cale, who served as the perfect collaborator, elevating Nico's worldview with his often gorgeous, always sympathetic musical backing. --Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
You are beautiful and you are alone.......2007-04-21
Imagine the center of the song is a singer who cannot sing. Not an insurmountable obstacle, but one requiring special sensitivity in material and production. Often it's here and worth the effort to listen - a sound rarified and lunar.
Inelegant and primitive, Nico sounds best when supported by baroquefolk violins. (There's no dialectic when the VU backs her.) She gets an oblique, decomposing cabaret vibe going - it's despairing but never pretentious.
Marlene Dietrich doing Tom Waits - only much more glacial.
the beautiful and the damned.......2006-10-19
Nico is the most under-rated female vocalist in recording history. Were it not for the valiant efforts of Danny Fields after the break-up of the original Velvet Underground, and others along the way, who really heard her voice - the tragic majesty of that voice - long before the rest of us - perhaps even this anthology would not be available to us. As others have noted, altho we get a solid compilation here - there are some notable exceptions. One wishes someone would issue "Behind the Iron Curtain" on CD. With all the junk out on CD today, is it really that difficult to re-release one of the great masterpieces of this unsurpassed diva? Nico's rendering of "My Funny Valentine" is in my opinion the greatest of all time - what I listen to when I really want to cry to music.
Classic.......2005-05-17
She was the Velvet Underground's tambourine-shaking chanteuse, an influence on punk and goth, and the dark side to the vast expanse of pop music. In her solo career, Nico released some of the best music in all of pop-dom, full of despair, darkness and beauty.
"The Classic Years" is an excellent compilation of Nico's best. It's a bit of a surprise to hear it open with the bouncy melody of the Gordon Lightfoot cover "I'm Not Saying," with Nico doing her best to keep up. Her thick vocals seem more appropriate in "The Last Mile," a stripped-down guitar ballad.
Then we venture into VU territory, with songs that Nico did on the one album where she performed. "All Tomorrow's Parties" is slow, stately and rich, while "Femme Fatale" is a light, sharp song with a tambourine, and "I'll Be Your Mirror" is an exquisite, delicate little ballad. These are among Nico's best songs.
But things remain exquisite in her following solo songs, which stray away from typical pop rhythms, and the gritty, unpolished sound that the Velvet Underground made famous. Instead we have the darkly erotic cover of the Doors' "The End," the sensuous "Chelsea Girls," and the eerie, haunting "No One Is There."
"The Classic Years" is in more or less chronological order -- it starts off with her first single, recorded for Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham, goes into her Velvet Underground Roots, and finishes with her solo pop career. Nico died in 1988 in a car accident, but had she lived, it would be easy to imagine that she would be just as much a legend today.
And away from English ubermanagers and American alt-bands, Nico's true musical style starts to shine through. It's more European in style: stately, polished, dark and rich as mahogany. In those songs, Nico seems most as home, singing almost cheerfully about isolation and death.
In technical terms her singing is not great -- deep, thick, heavily accented and monotone. But she's strange compelling, just because her voice is so unusual. The first song is the only one where she doesn't sound good -- uptempo made her sound artificially cheerful. The rest of the time, she stays slow and meditative.
Even today, Nico is a much underrated artist. But "The Classic Years" show her off at her best, with most of her best songs grouped as one album.
Roots of Goth.......2005-03-21
While I love the Velvet Underground, I'll admit I've never been a fan of Nico's proto-goth solo career. Over half of this compilation is drawn from The Marble Index, Desertshore and The End, which means lots of long drawn out harmonium chords and Nico's Teutonic junkie poetry, with old VU pal John Cale's sporadic attempts to inject some semblence of order to the proceedings. Goth rockers may owe Nico an enormous debt, it's just not this reviewer's cup of tea although I'll admit that when it works, as on "Janitor of Lunacy," the results can be pretty awesome. Too often though, the result is something like the endless, pointless and unlistenable version of The Door's "The End."
The first half of this compilation unearths some rarities for hardcore collectors and provides some historical interest. The 1965 oddball single "I'm Not Sayin'" was written and produced by Stones producer Andrew Loog-Oldham, while the b-side, "The last Mile" was co-written, arranged and produced by none other than Jimmy Page, who is said to have played on the sessions as well. The rarely heard single version of the Velvet's "All Tomorrows Parties" is very cool to have too.
The collection is rounded out by four songs from her solo debut Chelsea Girl, two each by Jackson Browne and Lou Reed.
I would recommend this CD to anyone wanting to check out the roots of goth, as well as hardcore fans of Lightfoot, Browne, Cale, Reed, Oldham/Stones or Page/Zep who want some rarities for their collections. And of course Nico fans, who probably own this already anyways.
Richard Witts Nico bio "Life and Lies of an Icon" makes interesting companionship reading.
Not the best collection of her work, BUT...........2003-06-30
Nico's albums sound like absolutely nothing released in the last 25 years. For the critics I rebut, that few if any artists of the time were even remotely as Original and Authentic as NICO. Buy her individuals albums, rather than this dim-witted posthumous sampler.

The received wisdom on the tragic torch singer's later work--of these 35 tracks, six were recorded in 1946 and '47, and the rest in the '50s--is that her interpretive skill made up for the collapse of her voice. In fact, the serious cracks in her pitch don't appear until the second disc of this set, and it doesn't approach the febrile croak of Lady in Satin until the END. But she relies on a handful of vocal tricks, and some numbers that had been in her repertoire for ages, to approximate the glory that her voice once was. At times, though, the results are lovely and heartbroken rather than saddening, especially with the simpatico musical backing she got in these sessions. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
Very Good, Very Jazz, Very Ballady, among her best .......2005-03-10
This selection of her post war work for Verve is among Billie Holiday's Best work. Instead of looking at Holiday as a personal crsisi in process, or as unblemished idol who was always good, it is interesting to look at this selection in regard to where she was as a developing artist.
My opinion is that along with some of the live shots from concerts at the time, this is her last good work because Verve really packaged her as a JAZZ SINGER PLAYING IN A TOTAL jazz package. Unlike some of the Verve recordings of some of the old stars of Swing in the 1940s and the early 1950s, these Holiday recording surrounded Billie with great Jazz musicians like Ben Webster, and eschews either Billie's unfortunate attempts in the early 40s to become a cabaret chanteuse, or later attempt to put over Billie as a pop or R & B singer.
It's the Jazziness, the swing, and the manipulation of the diction that bop and swing and entrance you here. She no longer has the great voice and the raucous swing she possessed as a woman in her twenties in the 1930s. Heroin and hard living had clearly had their effect on her voice and outlook. However, she conquers these sides with a superior sense of swing and attitude. She does that in distinction to her other work because Verve provided a great group of jazz musicians, real jazz arrangements and trusted in Billie.
At the same time, there is a more developed harmonic and rhythmic take here and a great ability to put depth into ballads here.
This is altogether different than the prewar stuff. The prewar stuff bounces and raves and dances, whereas this is jivy, thoughtful, and gracefully swinging, more what you would listen to with a good Scotch than a good beer.
We need a remastered version Verve.......2004-07-14
This is more than a decade old, and I dont like the sound very much. Verve should really release these tracks in a new compilation with better sound. I prefer the early Billie Holiday, and to me she reached her peak at her last sessions for Columbia. I'd strongly recommend to anyone just getting into Bilie to check the Columbia/Legacy stuff first. This is more difficult to appreciate, but stil is great music. Billie is the best jazz singer that ever lived, period.
GOD BLESS HER SOUL !!!.......2002-06-19
For many years now, there's been going on a "strange" comparison between Billie's two periods : before and after her time in prison.... The explanation is very simple. You don't buy Billie's records in order to HEAR them, but to FEEL them !!!! It wasn't her technical capabilities in singing that made the Lady famous. It was her emotions, her strength at heart, her willingness to overcome all the problems she had with her private life. That's what you get if you purchase the "Lady in Autumn" CD. You get a Great Lady that stands up with pride, and still manages to keep a high level of quality at her work. It's harder to remain at the top, than getting there at the first place. And Billie stood at the top for a very long time !!!!!
And Still Her Heart Has Wings.......2002-03-01
This is the best ballad collection of Billie Holiday to date. You hear someone who has experienced life, in every nuance of her voice. 'These Foolish Things Remind Me Of You' is the most heartbreakingly perfect ballad ever recorded, with a subtly touching piano accompaniment by Oscar Peterson. This track is for those who have loved and lost. 'Don't Worry 'Bout Me' has an ironic sadness when viewed from here and it is appropriately placed as the last song in the set. It will make you cry.
A Revelation.......2001-12-14
There is an on-going dispute between Holiday fans: is Billie Holiday more interesting at the beginning of her career, when her voice was at its best, or at the end of her career, when her interpretive skills were at their finest? My preference is for the latter, and LADY IN AUTUMN offers a truly fine sampling of later Billie Holiday recordings.
Even at its youthful best, Billie Holiday's distinctive, very quirky voice was never noted for any of the qualities we usually applaud in great singers: Holiday's range, power, and breath support were always more than a little ify. But Holiday showed a remarkable facility for shaping her voice much as sculptor might, and she transformed her vocal defects into an astonishing personal idiom that has never failed to mix musical delight with raw emotional power. And this ability was at its height toward the end of her career.
It is true, however, that Holiday's later recordings are an acquired taste, and listeners who are new to her unique stylings may be put off by the vocal roughness of her later work. But for those who have already listened to an enjoyed her earlier work, Billie Holiday's LADY IN AUTUMN will be a revelation.

A+ for the Basie Cats! and AMAZINGLY, the Columbia guys got it right........2006-05-20
I don't have to tell anyone how great these tracks are. How does one guy get all 16 of the greatest swing musicians in the world into one band? This set has some Great surprises: Live sides, and rare alternates, like "It's The Same Old South", (a different take than the version on the vinyl "Superchief")
I have several of these on the ARC/Columbia family of labels (Vocallion, Brunswick, Okey, etc.) both 78s and Lps. and have been trying and failing to replace them with decent CD copies. COLUMBIA FINNALLY GOT IT RIGHT!. This set is a pleasure, and for once, it sounds great! You will NEVER be dissapointed with this purchace.
Now if Columbia would refund everybody's money for the unlistenable versions of these tunes they issued on the "Essential" series, and the "This Is Jazz" series etc., we could use it to replace our copies of the Armstrong Hot Fives that they had previous butchered, or the Bix, ...it goes on .....
A Great Overview Of These Years.......2005-06-25
A welcome addition in a lovely box with all the beauty of great sound,a 90 page book, a great disc of live material/broadcasts makes this a needed addition to any Basie lover..I also have the Columbia's Essential collections spanning 3 discs but this here is a needed bonus and is still not a substitute for those under rated discs put out earlier...Such a prolific man deserves royal treatment and does some justice to the earlier output..but obviously other reviewers will give you more detail as to songs selection and musicians I just wanted to add appreciation..
Seeking Intro to Swing? Start Here.......2005-02-26
This is a truly great package which you will find yourself listening to again and again. As others mentioned, the four discs here cover several of Basie's bands, so what you get is not simply 90 songs from a single band, which would get quite boring no matter how great any individual band was, but rather choice cuts from different bands of different size and composition over a twenty year period. The result is four discs each with their own distinct sound, each providing a different snapshot of the evolution of swing under Basie.
While historians might object, the arrangement of the songs is great too from the standpoint of a pure listening experience, with the first two discs being Basie's smaller groups, and the latter two being the larger Count Basie Orchestra. While the Orchestra is the most famous of these bands, and is outstanding in its own right, the best material here is from the small groups. The sound is less polished than it would become years later, but there's a raw energy to the Basie Octet that can't be matched.
The sound throughout the package is amazing. Full bass, minimal hiss, and not tinny. If only all music from this era could be remastered so well.
This is fun music, not the over-intellectualized jazz that sends people from the room. Well worth the investment if you want an overview of swing at its best.
Stellar release.......2004-09-27
This is the best these sides have sounded ever, period. It is really a treat to hear the early Basie band with Lester Young in all its glory. The sound restoration on some of these tracks is just unbelievable, I had to check the linear notes to make sure these were the 1940 recordigs, because they sounded so different to the muddy/scratchy sound I grew used to. The linear notes alone are worth the price of this box set. And one full disc of most unreleased live tracks, many with Lester Young and Billie Holiday? You do the math. Many people, i am not included, are waiting for the full Columbia sessions remastered, but for me, this is what I have been waiting many years. The track secuence is annoying, I still cant understand why not doing it chronological, but its just a minor flaw.
Great collection of classic jazz and swing.......2004-09-14
This is a swell 4-CD box set that covers all of Basie's studio work for the Columbia label, from 1936-51, working in a variety of configurations, from small combos to the full-on Basie Orchestra, including several songs with Basie backing up Billie Holiday, and plenty of other vocal tunes featuring Basie regulars Helen Humes and Jimmy Rushing. This collection also marks the first time Columbia has officially delved into the wealth of live transcription performances and radio broadcasts featuring the Basie band... This material was previously the sole province of various European collector labels; Sony shows it's able to do this material up right, with meticulous scholarship and great sound quality. Doubtless, many of the sniffier jazz scholars will find some reason or another to pooh-pooh this collection, but for us regular folks, it's mighty tasty. Recommended!

this takes you there..........2005-10-09
Feelings of sadness and loss for the people and the history of New Orleans as a result of Katrina made this CD an obvious purchase. When one thinks of New Orleans, one can only think of incredible jazz and incredible food! What is jazz without the soul of the musicians of Preservation Hall? This CD will remind you....
