5 out of 5 stars Musicians Unite To Benefit Free Speech.......2007-02-24

This unique and now rare CD captures a two-night performance at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville to benefit the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University. The CD was originally offered to the public for free (with only a nominal mailing charge), with the hope that the recipient would recognize the importance of the cause and make an additional monetary donation to the Center, which battles censorship and other infringements on First Amendment rights.

The concept behind the choice of songs was simple; every song on this disc was banned or surpressed in some manner at the time it was originally released. They dealt with a variety of subjects: sex, integration, and the Vietnam-era anti-war movement among them. Some of the tunes are very familiar, such as Good Rockin' Tonight (best known through Elvis Presley's recording), Ohio (Crosby Stills Nash & Young) Blowin' In the Wind (Bob Dylan) and In the Ghetto (also Elvis), while others were more obscure, then and now. In some cases, it seems almost laughable that the song prompted such an uproar. But almost all of them had an important message about society at the time they first recorded.

The list of performers is diverse and impressive. Steve Earle performs one of his own recent compositions, and Rodney Crowell, Radney Foster, Bill Lloyd (who also serves as musical director), Dan Baird, Kim Richey, Kevin Welch, and Greg Trooper also appear. The best performance is turned in by Tommy Womack, whose version of Eve of Destruction has an honesty, passion and energy that Barry McGuire's hit version (1965) sorely lacked. Another highlight is a straightfaced trio rendition of Where Have All the Flowers Gone, a song I never again expected to enjoy, having lived through too many saccharine versions during the Sixties folk boom. Sadly, its powerful anti-war message is relevant again in our times.

The purpose for these performances is found in the songs themselves; there are no heavy-handed speeches or politicizing. But these sensitive and intelligent renditions serve to remind us how precious is the right of free speech, and that artistic expression should not be crushed by political or social agendas.

Even if you remain unpersuaded by the politics, this recording is a lot of fun, with a lot of terrific songs, and it stands up to repeated listening. Good luck finding this CD, but if you do, grab it. You won't be disappointed.

This is one of my finds at NYC this past Holiday. I think it was at a St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Store on 79th & Broadway... Great little place; big on books and knick-knacks and a surprisingly beefy little selection of CD's.
The reason this particular CD stands out from the others is 2-fold. 1st, {amendment}.. I can't get this to show-up on All Music, which is where I go for a little background sometimes.. Sometimes alot. and 2nd, There are substantial cover-materials here to warrant a cop.
Dan Baird of the Legendary Georgia Satellite turns in a kill-me-with-it version of "Stret Fighting Man".. and Rodney Crowell, the first Mr. RoseAnne Cash, trips into Merle-Town with that anti-hippie chestnut "Okie from Muskogee".
You also get "Society's Child" and "Ohio" and "In the Ghetto"- - -

Bill Lloyd seems to be the thread. It's like great evening out with a group of musicians doing what they do best.
      18 in all.

Few albums encompass the wide range of styles that In the Red does, but what's truly remarkable is the way it all seamlessly flows together. With each listen, this 1995 collaboration between violinist Tammy Rogers and percussionist Don Heffington reveals new colors and textures. The pair moves from buoyant old-time fiddle tunes to insistent minor-keyed marches to haunting Old World waltzes to bubbling Middle Eastern vamps, and the relationships between them all emerge clearly and magically. On a song such as "Whiplash," the atmosphere glides back and forth from exotic to down-home, and yet the shift seems perfectly natural as Rogers's fiddle dances atop Heffington's pandeiro (a type of Brazilian drum). "Get Out While You Can" sounds like an eerie snake charmer's siren song on which Heffington moves to Egyptian tambourine and African hand drum. The moods established throughout In the Red are vivid and complex, an amazing accomplishment considering the pared-down instrumentation on most of the cuts. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars An Unfairly Overlooked Charmer.......2001-08-10

One of the problems with the huge success of the Faith Hill- and Shania Twain-style country acts is that they overshadow a lot of artists producing less flashy but higher-quality music. Tammy Rogers writes good, emotional stuff with the right amount of country twang. Definitely worth a listen if you need to hear something NOT played 18 times a day on country radio.

          5 out of 5 stars Why Isn't Tammy Rogers a Household Name?.......2000-03-04

"Going for a Drive" is a GREAT song - catchy and uplifting. And anyone that has seen the video for this song can testify to the fact that Rogers is not only very pretty, she is also a real cutie-pie. I just want to give her a big hug every time I see it!

If her career doesn't take off, it will be a loss for the millions of music fans that should be enjoying her charming music.

You have to give Tammy Rogers credit. An in-demand Nashville session specialist, Rogers could easily make do playing fiddle behind the likes of past employers Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless, and Trisha Yearwood. Not content to hover in the background, however, Rogers has forged a solo career built around her vocals (think Harris sans seasoning), compositions, and arrangements. It's the last that's her strong suit. Rogers's best effort remains 1995's mostly instrumental In the Red, a collaboration with fellow session player and Dead Reckoning Records regular Dan Heffington. As with that off-center country sleeper, Speed of Love is rife with tasty, subtle arrangements. Check out the Magical Mystery Tour-like strings that juice up "Rescue Me" or "How Can I Lose," an uptempo outing that's the perfect synthesis of her alt-country past and more mainstream predilections. Less-than-stellar originals pop up here and there, and one suspects Rogers will be a more distinctive singer an album or two down the road. Still, Speed of Love is another impressive step by an intriguing country-folk comer. --Steven Stolder

OK. I was late to snap to the Dead Reckoners. I found Kevin Welch almost a decade ago because of his song "Early Summer Rain", incorporating the poetic imagery of painter T.C. Cannon. I should have followed him from that CD into his collaboration with several other Nashville artists and their Dead Reckoning indy label _right away_. But better late than never. Tammy Rogers is one of those artists. I ordered this CD only because I have recently realized that the music of Welch and his group (Keiran Kane!) are as good as it gets. This is a WONDERFUL album. It's not bluegrass, not country...it's not folk, it's something on the "more intelligent" end of all those genres. On first play, you won't hear the clever and the profound nuances of Rogers' voice, her harmonies (w/EmmyLou & Victoria Williams among others), her arrangements. If you feel,on first listen, that the previous reviewer & I are a little too bedazzled with this project, give it another listen or two. It's a gem of an "album". Then check out Kevin Welch, Keiran Kane & Harry Stinson. TRULY American music's best-kept secret.
