Vassar and the Boys Stretch Out.......2001-09-07
During the '70's, fiddlin' Vassar Clements was in such high demand as a side man that it was damned near impossible to purchase an album that did NOT feature his remarkable playing. In addition to his key roles in ground breaking efforts such as "Will the Circle be Unbroken" and "Old and in the Way", Vassar made the rounds among such disparate pop stars as Paul McCartney, Elvin Bishop, and Dickie Betts - and put out some product of his own, as well.
"Hillbilly Jazz" mostly features the Bob Wills/Texas swing side of Vassar's playing, ably assisted by a strong backup group featuring David Bromberg on acoustic and slide guitars and some great pedal steel work by Doug Jerrigan. In addition to covering the Wills hits "San Antonio Rose" and "Take Me Back to Tulsa", there's a great version of Benny Goodman's "Breakfast Feud" (Jerrigan particularly shines on this one), a bluesy "Sittin' on Top of the World", and closes with a gorgeous instrumental version of Bromberg's "Last Song for Shelby Jean." What really makes this collection work is while there's some wonderful picking going on, nothing ever sounds forced. The vocals (shared by Vassar and Gordon Terry) give the session a relaxed feel that someone still keeps the listener's attention.
This effort is a must-have for fans of Vassar, and a whole lotta fun for fans of swing, country, and bluegrass music.
Wow, it's on CD.......1999-10-16
I purchased the vinyl version of this album in 1979 after first hearing it at the Maintenance Shop, a bar/music venue on the Iowa State University campus. I've long entertained the notion of purchasing a new turntable just so I could listen to it again. What a pleasure to find it on CD ! A perfect introduction to road house country and bluegrass...
Superb!.......1999-10-11
This is Bar-B-que music at it's best. The line up is incredible! Lovers of Vassar Clements take note, he had some good recording days making this one. Bromberg was cooking along with the others, I bought it for the Vassar element, but this recording is just S'wonderful, Texas Swing players like Strait and Gimbel, Asleep at the Wheel etc... probably all own a copy and should. This is a masterpiece, in a live-sounding setting. Dig in and enjoy!

W. Lee Western Swing Chronicles Volume 4.......2007-04-24
I have other cassettes by this artists. But they do not even compare to this CD. To me this is the best collection of W. Lee and His Boys. It gives you a good rounded out look at what a great band they were. I would highly recommend it to any one who is looking for him. Again thanks greatly to the person who put together this CD a very well done job. Excellent in every way. Shows you all of their different muscial talents. I would greatly recommend this to everyone.
...and The Light Crust Doughboys Are On The Air!!!.......2007-03-07
Simply put, this album kicks butt! If you like western swing there is no way you will not love this CD. There isn't one bad track on the entire disc. The thing that puzzles me though, is that with all these western swing box sets that have come out recently from Proper, Bear Family etc., how could it be that The Doughboys have been excluded? It is common knowledge that they are the originators of the genre, before it was even called "western swing". And even though seminal figures Bob Wills and Milton Brown passed through their lineup pretty early on in the game, the Doughboys continued to swing on with only top notch singers and musicians including Dick Reinhart and Paul Huff, just to name a few. So while this album wets your appetite for more Doughboys, you are left starving because it is basically the only major CD release of their music.

Album Description
The "Old Southern Sound" was a mixture of several traditions and there were no strictly borders between the different styles. Black blues and white hillbilly musicians influenced each other and often shared a common repertoire. DeFord Bailey learned these tunes from his grandfather who called them "black hillbilly music". The harmonica became a link between the races as the first mass produced musical instrument which was cheap enough for everyone to own. It was easy to play and you could carry it around in your pocket. The harmonica was not only popular with soloists who liked to imitate the sounds of trains and foxchases with it, but was also widely used in many hillbilly stringbands to add a different flavor. Trikont. 2005.

Album Description
"Homespun Americana and modern classical music aren't as far apart as one might think. Charley Patton and Robert Johnson were just as much innovators of minimalist music...as composers such as John Cage, Phillip Glass and Terry Riley. Theorist/philosopher Henry Flynt falls into the latter camp." - NO DEPRESSION
