"Brazilian Girls" is a name designed to steer you to the "wrong" sites in a Web search, and the not-so-thinly-veiled innuendo (one chorus is "Pussy pussy pussy marijuana") doesn't help either. But the music the Brazilian Girls make is more seductive than salacious. And except for one member, they aren't girls. The one who is, Italian-born Sabina Sciubba, is a former jazz singer who has the hipper-than-thou chanteuse thing going: a cigarette dangling from her lips, a beret cocked sideways on her head, black-stockinged legs crossed suggestively... at least she sure sounds that way. Sciubba sits astride basslines that insinuate themselves like a sideways glance in a smoky bar, as a sensual mix of live drumming and gritty trip-hop lounge grooves skew to the side of late-night alcohol-clouded vision. The English, French, Spanish, and German-language lyrics and Weill/Brecht-meets-Baja Marimba Band horns only add to the delirious dislocation. With a sophisticated electronic palette, Brazilian Girls exude that hip retro-future sound that propelled Deee-Lite back in 1990. Hopefully they won't also be one-hit wonders. --John Diliberto

Very enjoyable.......2007-03-10
Calm, nice slow mood. Great to use to get some girls in 'the mood'. I've tried it, recommended.
Fun Dinner Party Starter.......2007-03-08
Great mix and mingle CD. All guest comments were "Oh this is different, but I like it"!
Sexy music that pulls you in.......2007-01-05
Just had to say something about this CD, cos I'm totally blown away by the sound. Picked it up as a late Christmas gift to myself and couldn't be happier. Sciubba's voice is smooth, sexy and totally amazes me each time I listen to the album. 'DON'T STOP' is a winner and immediately caught my attention, cos everything about this song is incredible. The song remains on "repeat" in my discman when I travel on the subway. Sabina Sciubba sounds a lot like Nena (99 Luft Balloons) with her smokey pipes. I'd definitely play the album for customers at my bistro (if I had one). This is the stuff you want to listen to while having drinks with friends on any given spring or summer afternoon/evening.
The album is ballsy, fresh and bold. The band truly impress me more each time I listen to their music. Because of this, I bought everything in their discography. This album stands out in my music collection because I listen to it in "parts" rather than over-play it as a whole. There's a Euro feel to the CD, compared to "Talk to La Bomb". This album is a little lighter and more techno-oriented at times, as the follow-up "TTLB" is jazzier work. The album will really pump you into a music buzz if you listen to it on your Ipod or any portable apparatus using headphones.
'SHIPS IN THE NIGHT' is dreamy and laid-back, a perfect ending to a busy album, though not what I expected as a concluding track. As the songs are sung in four languages, it's a pleasure to my ears. Will definitely transfer the album to my minidisc player for fun, carefree summer listening. I guess I just described Brazilian Girls right there. They are fun and carefree.
Filled with interesting sounds, samples and solid bass and drum beat throughout, the CD will charm you. It's a sexy album and you'll want to get up and dance, no doubt. I enjoy 'LAZY LOVER' because of the smoothness of Sciubba's vocals mixed with the smooth arrangements. This particular song can be heard during a TV commercial where there's a couple rolling downhill toward a beach. Cute song, funny commercial. "PUSSY' and 'SIRENES DE LA FETE' are 2 very fun songs, which had me laughing when playing them for the first time. Clearly not what I expected, I'm a happy camper and want to hear more stuff like this from BG. Hmmmmmm...was trying to think of something the album lacks. Well, maybe they could've included a vid clip of "Don't Stop" or something, since the video to this particular song is fab!

It's not a bright and sunny day in the land of Brazilian Girls anymore. That's the message one might take from "Jique," the opening track of this, their second album. In concert, they've performed "Jique" more playfully, but on Talk to La Bomb, a snarling bass-line and juggernaut drum riff drive this piece of post-industrial squall as singer Sabina Sciubba maintains her sophisticated cool against the electronic storm surge. There are no more cute songs with choruses that go "Pussy pussy pussy marijuana" like those that appeared on their first blast of joyful noise. This is a darker album full of Babel language, post-war rage, and techno-hysteria. "I always have an orgasm when the tanks are rolling, crashing through the borders," Sciubba declares on "Never Met a German." Brazilian Girls maintain the same kinetic thrust and hook-laden melodies as before, but they've turned up the rhythmic aggression and electronic squelch to 11. Attitudes that were bemused in "Lazy Lover" are now pissed off in "Sexy Asshole." Even when they start off sultry, like in "Rules of the Game," it turns into sardonic, synth-fuzzed anger. There is a stridency to some of the tracks, including the title piece, which starts out echoing Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" before launching into a militaristic rhythm and sloganeering chorus. Only "Nicotine" has that seductive, late-night rendezvous mood of their first album, and even that has a bit of the Residents' zombie groove happening. On Talk to La Bomb, Brazilian Girls move from seducers to provocateurs. --John Diliberto

Another "Must Have"!.......2007-07-03
A friend of mine ownes this album. I borrowed it and fell in love with it immediately! So much so that I didn't even consider copying it, I bought a full retail version!
There is nothing to dislike about La Bomb. Give it a listen then buy it! If the Brazilian Girls continue with albums like this one, they will be very successful!
Impressive.......2007-06-15
Had never heard of this group before, but got it as a recommendation from someone who had it recommended to him. Listen to the samples, if you like this style of music, get this and their other CD. Very well done.
Cool delivery........2007-03-08
This is the second album for the eclectic, multi-lingual New York band that, despite its name, is largely male and definitely not from Brazil.
The Brazilian Girls return with another mix of upbeat electronica, organic rock, jazz and world music. This is nonstop erotic dance music for jet setters, with the proudly Euro-trash Sabina Sciubba riding the grooves like an old, charismatic pro.
What separates these non-Brazilians from the pack is that they are old school musicians with real ability and they've gelled together as an unbreakably tight unit.
Sabina has a voice clarified and honed by years of singing jazz that enchants the listener without overwhelming bandmates Didi Gutman, Aaron Johnston, and Jesse Murphy. The band's melodic and rhythmic synergy makes their music at once danceable and memorable, and worked to great effect on their eponymous debut. Melody dominated "Brazilian Girls", but their live performances and their remix of Blossom Dearie's "Just One of Those Things" on the third Verve Remixed compilation showcased an underlying yet relentlessly driving beat.
"Talk to La Bomb" is more effective than "Brazilian Girls" was at bringing this melodic but powerful energy to a studio album, perhaps because the new album's mood is darker and sharper.
Languages roll off Sabina's tongue with the same sexy insouciance that genres spring from her bandmates' fingers.
On "Jique," she mashes up Spanish, French, German, and oh yeah, English.
This New York-based band of vagabonds makes multicultural, cosmopolitan, intellectual dance music: Ibiza meets punk, dub goes tango, trance gets smart. And with her tongue-in-chic costumes and cool delivery, Sciubba could be the 21st century's first superstar-style siren.
Just Listen!.......2007-02-23
I read some of the other reviews and thought it was kind of silly for people to try and analyze which BG album is better....what does it really matter? This is a great(band)and they create thoroughly terrific music. I happen to think that Talk To La Bomb is pretty fantastic, unlike anything else that is out there. Let's remember just how horrible and bad the music industry is right now and let's just enjoy talented musicians like BG that go unnoticed for the most part, except by critics and nobody listens to them anymore either!
damn good music!.......2007-02-08
actually got to see these guys live on new years eve, nyc, 2006.
"Talk To LaBOMB" is a great new album. smart, sexy, angry and totally different to their first offering "Brazilian Girls" which was still different, but soft round the edges and melodic with great words. this one is protest, it's hard, sometimes fast and rude but bloody entertaining!
listen to "sexy a**hole" and tell me you don't like it? weirdo!

Cool.......2007-01-10
Lazy Lover sounds so retro. I play it a lot. One day I'll get to NYC to see the group. I like any music with that 40's sound.
Soooooooooo Gooooooood!.......2006-12-29
I love it! All 5 tracks are special to me because I adore Brazilian Girls and their unique, boldness and genius songwriting strategies. The front cover photo is fun and attracted me write away. Actually, this item is still in my amazon shopping cart as I write this.
Since I don't own the band's debut album yet, I presume tracks 1, 2 and 3 are from there. Track #4 is super and I'm ever so happy to have found this single while shopping today for music. Hopefully BG will release a 3rd album and lots of singles, for their music touches me exactly where music should. In fact, this single is good enough to record onto my SONY minidisc player for near-future listening pleasure.
Sabina's voice is obviously fun to play around with, and I like the way they toyed with it on track 5, for it's really been electricized, looped and transformed. Tracklist is as follows:
01- Lazy Lover - 3'59 (Lyrics by: S. Sciubba - Music By: Brazilian Girls)
02- Sirenes De La Fete - 4'30 (Lyrics By: S. Sciubba - Music By: Brazilian Girls)
03- Pussy - 4:07 (Lyrics By: S. Sciubba - Music By: Brazilian Girls / C. Gayton)
04- Lazy Lover - Brazilian Girls' FreeMix - 5'21
05- Lazy Lover - Herbert's Busy Lover Mix - 5'13 (Remix And Additional Production By: Matthew 'Mixing' Herbert - Recorded at: Macrophony)
The fuschia-colored CD with black & white aztec Font & artwork is housed in a slimline jewel case with an insert. Most of the time, a slimline traycard (booklet) won't contain any information on the interior of the two-fold insert. But this insert contains band info, credits, website and band members names, as well as other production info.
a favorite new discovery!.......2004-12-04
this band is amazing live. . . caught them by accident at NuBlu in the east village and they are truly amazing. . . this ep gives you a taste. . . looking forward to the full album in 2005
this is stuck in my CD player and iPod and does not want to come out :) love it
Cool debut but could be even better.......2004-11-06
I saw Brazilian Girls first at an outdoor concert at Thompkins Square in September and I was very impressed. I bought their promo CD and was totally addicted to their music. They sing in German, French, Spanish and English. Music is very catchy, a bit melancholy but very powerful. I bought their first EP as soon as it came out. "Lazy Lover" is beautiful. It's the best thing to listen to when you lie in bed in the morning... But there are basically only 3 songs, plus two remix of "lazy lover." The first is still good, but Herbert's seems like a sidejob favor--sounds exactly like from dani siciliano's last album and has nothing new. They could have left it out. I heard they are going to release their first full-length album next January. I'm very looking forward to it. I think they are definitely going to be big.
P.S. They used to play live at Nublu every sunday night.

I Really Really Like You..........2007-03-02
Wanna get your friends & family into Brazilian Girls? This CD single is definitely the trick! Two of their best songs together on one single, housed in a slimline jewel case with full-color insert...you couldn't get a better deal.
'LAST CALL' gives the listener a fine example of Sabina Sciubba's rich, smokey vocal tones plus the band's bouncy, sexy arrangements. This song is truly sexy and truly a crowd-pleaser. Wouldn't be surprised if it were remixed and released as a "single" of it's own. As for 'JIQUE', it's an amazing song with a punk-influenced guitar riff, catchy drums (by cute Aaron Johnston) and Sabina's showcase singing style. I absolutely love the lyrics to this song. Sung in 3 languages (English, French and German), the listener is treated to nothing but foot-stomping, ear-pumping goodness.
01- Last Call (Produced by Ric Ocasek)
02- Jique [pronounced heekay] (Produced by Brazilian Girls and Mark Plati
Perfect as a stocking stuffer or all-year-round gift. So, if you want to treat your friends to something new, fresh and truly inspiring, buy them this single and you'll see how quick they'll be rushing out to grab up everything this band has released. Get one for yourself too, in support of this remarkable, critically acclamed band.

Don't Stop!.......2007-03-02
Just received my copy from amazon in the mail. Housed in a jewelcase with front & back inserts, this fun package came as a surprise before even listening to the fun mixes. The front cover art features the band member's legs. When you flip the box over, the picture continues but upside-down. I think this is a cool design concept. ;) The four-page booklet includes band & credits info. Disc is white with 'raised' blue graphics and a cyan-toned thumbnail of band. Titling is in red.
Tracks one and two are practically the same. I like the keyboard arrangements and appreciate these tracks for those arrangements alone. Track two contains less Sabina therefore making this an almost-instrumental version of track one. It could've been omitted from the tracklist and something more dancier could've been added instead. Track three is the album version, which is the best song on their debut CD. Track four has an extended 'beat-based' intro before the song actually starts. Track five features Sabina's 'breathy' acappella rendition. It is the original vocal layer. Since it is a vocal-only track, Sabina's smokey vocals are evidently clearer because there's nothing to distract the listener's ear. That's how I finally realized she was saying "......let's drink some tea and smoke some herb".
Tracklisting:
01- Don't Stop (Riton Re-Rub) 5'35
02- Don't Stop (Riton Re-Rub Dub) 5'35
03- Don't Stop (Album Version) 3'50
04- Don't Stop (Brazilian Girls Extended Mix) 6'31
05- Don't Stop (Acappella) 3'51
Buy it for collecting purposes, and to support this remarkable band. Not quite the clubbing single, I do appreciate it anyway.
Best girls.......2005-06-17
The first single from The Brazilian Girls are anything but funky and a little cheeky. Mixing a little of dance, electronic and laid-back lounge, the first single is a sweet fusion. It doesn't hurt that the lyrics go: "Don't stop, don't stop...just keep on going until I come" :)
Nothing beats the album version. Riton's Dub essentially make the song more danceable which also means it loses some of that funkiness of the original.

great collection of oldies & goodies.......2005-08-30
Volume 1 (pictured) has some classic bossa nova singers, mostly from the 1960s and 70s. There's a little samba, a little MPB. A few singers were nice, new surprises (like Doris Montero) to me. The compilation is not of songs worn out long ago (no 'Girl from Ipanema' even though that's the title), nor would I call it a 'Greatest Hits.' It can be called "many of the greatest singers" of that time period. Lots of flutes, some string arrangements.
The only contemporary artist is Bebel Gilberto (2000). For a great collection of more contemporary female vocalists, get CD #2 in this series.
So Nice... special thanks to Gal Costa!.......2004-10-07
This one will make you listen to it over and over. The best thing about it is the variety of styles, voices and moods, ranging from Nara Leao's soft Rapaz de Bem to Luciana Mello's rhythm-and-bluesy Quando Voce Me Olha, from the roguish Olhou Pra Mim by Doris Monteiro to the ocean-breezed Lugar Comum by Miucha, from the intoxicating groove of Jussara Silveira's La vem a Baiana to the smouldering passion of Marina Lima's Garota de Ipanema, from the misty Once I Loved by Astrud Gilberto to Gal Costa's A Ra, playful like the sunbeams in a waterfall (this one, written by Joao Donato, who also plays the piano here, is in my opinion the best song on this disk, the artful interplay of rhythms and Gal Costa's crystal-clear voice make it unsurpassed...) It's no use speaking about the rest - I think everyone can find here a song to fall in love with. This CD will light up your heart on a rainy day.
P.S. Ops, I'm speaking about the double CD "Pure Brazil: Girls From Ipanema" (it's the double CD that I have), and here the song listing is only for Disk 1... Though I think Disk 1 alone will also be ok, finally, it's somewhat better than Disk 2 of the double CD.
Incredible!!!!!!.......2004-05-28
This is an incredible compilation that really brings out the suaveness of true Brazilian Music. It has well known bossanova hits as well as rare Brazilian gems. It is the first Compilation Cd ever to have wonderful tracks from Astrud Gilberto and Bebel Gilberto. To my knowledge I have never heard these two on the same cd. This is a must have for all you Bossanova lovers.

Perfect Collection of Perfect Music.......2006-04-16
Great music will instantly transport you away.
These are some of the greatest tracks from the greatest female vocalists performing some of the greatest classic Brazillian bossa nova tracks - like the greatest hits of Motown, there are just perfect in every aspect.
The ONLY reason you might not want this CD is you have them already but if you want them all on one handy CD you can pop in anytime to be transported to the beaches of Brazil, I can think of no reason every person on this planet should not own this CD ...

Album Description
Japanese pressing of this oddly-named American outfit's 2006 album features one bonus track: 'Crosseyed And Painless'. Brazilian Girls seduce the listener into new territories with their signature beautiful melodies and infectious grooves. Their sophomore effort, Talk To La Bomb is all about rocking the crowds and making them dance. La Bomb is a clear evolution of the Brazilian Girls' melting pop sound. They add new textures and twists to the seductive, catchy, humorous, mysterious, danceable and multi-lingual sounds that marked their self-titled debut album. Universal.
