Perhaps his best.......2006-09-25
There is a reason this was re-released after so many years. That is because it is a seminal work in the evolution of Steel Guitar. Buddy went where no one had been before and never looked back afer that. This is a true classic.
What could be better than jazz meets the steel guitar? .......2005-03-03
Being a long time enthusiast of both the steel guitar and jazz, "Steel Guitar Jazz" united two of my great loves. Buddy Emmons seamlessly brings together two different worlds. Indeed, the music combines country-western's warmheartedness with the intelligence and coolness of jazz. Recorded in 1963, the instrumental recording has a wonderful feel that's very vintage, without sounding outdated. I find that the album's artwork beautifully captures the feel of the music. Buddy is accompanied by piano, sax, bass and the traps. What could be better than hearing Horace Silver and Sonny Rollins played on pedal steel? It sounds so good that I am left wondering, why did steel guitar jazz as a musical genre never blossom into a bold movement? Perhaps for the same reason David Grisman's bluegrass jazz never 'took off.' While the masses may have missed the steel guitar jazz movement, there's nothing keeping you from enjoying this groundbreaking and rewarding recording. Now if I can only figure out, should I keep such a disc in my country-western or jazz CD collection?

Album Description
Sol Hoopii is considered to be one of the greatest Hawaiian steel guitar players ever. He was the first Hawaiian guitarist to incorporate jazz improvisation into his playing, and his style was very influential to other steel guitarists of the 1920s-30s, including early western swing electric steel players. These recordings he made in 1933 and 1934 on acoustic steel guitar with his Novelty Quartette are the last before he switched to the electric guitar, and represent the pinnacle of his performing skill. Most have never been issued on LP or CD. This collection is a must for all fans of Hawaiian music, western swing, and early jazz guitar. 24 tracks, 76 minutes total. Includes many rare and unpublished photographs.
Customer Reviews:
An absolutely amazing collection for both Novices and Fans!.......2007-06-16
This collection of Hoopii recordings is so far and away superior to the two Hoopii discs issued previously on Rounder, it's almost laughable. This CD is wonderful, from the amazingly clear, delicately and sensitively restored recordings to the eye-catching graphics in the booklet. It's such a treat to have an accompanying booklet that's well-written, carefully researched and packed with photos that are never seen before. The music is a joy to listen to, of course, and I think this is an excellent item not only for Hoopii purists, but for those who are new to the music and might be searching for a proper introduction to the genre. I can't recommend this CD highly enough, I'm quite in love with it, and I have other Hoopii CD's in my collection, so I'm not exaggerating. My favorite tracks are: "I Like You", including the hilarious gasps and silly vocal asides that are so clear it sounds like it was recorded yesterday!
"On Our Parting Day", which is just a breathtakingly beautiful performance, and "There's Nothing Else To Do in Ma-La-Ka-Mo-Ka-Lu" which is quite pretty, and an old favorite. For Hoopii novices, as well as die-hard fans, THIS is the definitive Hoopii CD collection to own.
THE GOLD STANDARD OF STEEL GUITAR.......2007-05-02
The quality of sound on this most-recent compilation of Sol Hoopi's work is the best by far. If you're new to Hawaiian steel guitar then this is the right starting point. If you already love his music you'll be thrilled at the clarity, warmth and depth of these early-'30s acoustic-guitar recordings. The packaging is also superior, with comprehensive notes and lots of great photos.

Not as good as #1 & #2.......2007-01-19
Good Instrumental and quality sound recording, but content not as overall pleasing as VOLs 1 & 2.
Good, but not the best.......2006-07-09
I play Taylor guitars and learned of this series when Volume 1 was released. I bought it, and loved it. The diversity was amazing. I couldn't wait for Volume 2, and bought it as soon as it was released. I loved it.
So it is with a heavy heart that Volume 3 didn't meet my lofty expectations. Its a good album. But it sounds more mainstream than either of the first two. And although I have listened to it several times, its not an album that is growing on me. I see a limited listening life fot this one. And a return to Volumes 1 and 2.
TERRIFIC!.......2003-09-20
What better way to pay tribute to the acoustic guitar than with an album by some of the world's most proficient and influential players? The musicians are world-class, and so is this album.
Dave Matthews commands with "Litho Blitho," while Robben Ford surprises with a unique version of Louis Armstrong's "St. James Infirmary."
Kenny Rogers, Randy Dorman and Rick Harper team up for an unforgettable "Night Winds;" Doyle Dykes paired with Duane Eddy are an unbeatable twosome.
All the stars whether singer, songwriter, guitar soloist or producer are here. It's a must-have for guitar aficionados.

Album Description
A chopsmeister of the highest order, Vic Juris ranks right up there alongside the Pat Methenys, John Scofields, John Abercrombies and Bill Frisells of the jazz guitar world. A stylistically diverse collection of Juris originals, Blue Horizon is a thoughfully constructed quintet date that runs the gamut.
Juris' four main collaborators are internationally recognized musicians: Adam Nussbaum, Joe Locke, Jamey Haddad and Jay Anderson, who also produced and engineered the entire session at Mountain Rest, his newly-built studio in New Paltz, NY. Juris continuously tours as a leader and with the Dave Liebman Group.
Customer Reviews:
Have you ever wished for smooth jazz with spine?.......2004-12-12
I know I have. Why can't there be people who make music as aurally attractive, as gently seductive, as smooth jazz is without the the cheese and sentimentality? Andy Narell at his best strikes me as that kind of guy. And Stan Getz. Not to mention George Cables's Looking for the Light, Bobby Hutcherson's Solo Quartet, Matthias Lupri's Transition Sonic, lots of stuff by Bobby Watson, and just a boatload of other great recordings that combine beauty with rigor.
Let me be clear. I'm not talking about radio-friendly, pop-flavored pseudo-jazz. You know who I mean. I'm talking REAL jazz that nevertheless embraces aural gorgeousness. What Vic Juris has done on Blue Horizon.
One thing Vic Juris knows how to do is write a killer melody (all the tunes here are his). Another thing he knows how to do is find and lead a band of likeminded heavy-hitters. Jay Anderson (bass), Joe Locke (vibes, fast becoming one of the very top vibists of his generation), Adam Nussbaum (drums), and Jamey Haddad (percussion) play and improvise this music to perfection.
There are certainly more demonstrative, more visibly pyrotechnic jazz guitar heroes, but there are few better, more tasty, or more satisfying than Vic Juris at the top of his game.
Very highly recommended

Customer Reviews:
Good album by a BRILLIANT musician........2005-08-27
I gave this 5 stars to even some of these absurd reviews. I rarely review but I had to in this case because off all the bashing of this album. Jason Moran is a wholly original pianist with alot of intense things to say. However, that is not for all people. This album is for the most part, incredible. It doesnt quite reach the heights of his stone cold classic Black Stars (w/ Sam Rivers) but it is still very good. Some of the guitar is overprocessed, but as a whole Jason Moran is taking the blues and rhythms one step farther. If you enjoy cutting edge jazz and shifting rhythms (a la Miles at the Plugged Nickel) do not hesitate to buy this set. If you are fan of preconceived notions and you require your music to sound they way you wanted it to sound like, stick to smooth jazz.
don't believe the hype.......2005-05-08
I've been hearing about Jason Moran for a while now and got a chance to hear this group live last night. I echo what someone else said--the guitarist is lame--but then so is the bassist--and Jason Moran is a noodler. He has nothing to say and he has no touch on the piano. If you like a lot of pointless noodling this is your record.
So talented it's disgusting.......2005-02-20
I can see why a lot of folks struggle with this one. It's loud (mostly). And irreverent, if not outright bizarre. And kinda THICK sounding, as if the mix isn't quite right. And even sorta scatterbrained, in an odd way. Plus, the vibe's a little difficult to lock into. Those were my first impressions. And I generally trust first impressions.
But since I have so much respect for Mr. Moran, I decided to set the disc aside for a while and see when I came back to it if I'd somehow in the meantime figured out what was going on. Well, I'm not sure I've completely done that, but I've got a few ideas.
First off, if this is a blues album, it's one of the strangest ones ever released. Containing at the most three authentic blues numbers, it rather scopes out lots of sentiments and sensibilities akin to but not really blues. Plus, there's a rather striking and firmly rooted classical thing going on. Second, no matter what anyone says to the contrary, Marvin Sewell, a longtime favorite of mine and a practically criminally neglected guitarist, plays his butt off. Third, the leader is in finest fettle both from a playing standpoint and compositionally.
The blues contained herein--"Jump Up" and "I'll Play the Blues for You"--are so good it's scary, especially the latter, which evokes huge waves of badness, fueled equally by Sewell's electrifying guitar statements and Moran's crazily apropos pianisms: Roadhouse blues on steroids. Several other numbers ("Fire Waltz" by that blues-drenched piano maestro, Mal Waldron; "Restin'," almost but not quite a down-and-dirty country blues, with as much nostalgia and jest plain trouble as Townes Van Zandt meets Mississippi John Hurt; and "The Field," dripping distress and age-old injury) flirt with the blues while operating substantially in related but ancillary sonic and emotive venues.
Special mention should be made of the "Gangsterism" numbers bookending the performance. I'm thinking they're largely responsible for many listeners' ambivalence toward this disc. Both feature disturbing low-end pianisms, gnarly raucousness, and that muddily annoying mix. And yet, as much as any of the other performances, they define this disc's vibe, for better or worse. I admit they were the most difficult pieces for me (and, probably, lots of other listeners) to track with. Thus, they represent artistic integrity of the first order. Surely, someone as savvy (despite his tender years) as Jason Moran knows full well the risk he's taking placing these sonic anomalies front-and-center. Yet, that he went ahead and did it anyway, not only displays outsize Conejos but chutzpah above and beyond the call of duty.
All in all, this is a MONSTER disc, vaulting the leader and his empathetic band into the very front ranks of modern jazz.
First impression a good impression.......2005-02-19
This is the first of Jason Moran I have heard. It is the best modern jazz I have heard. If it is the blues, etc.. the whole point is it comes from the same mother. Good stuff
Was there a Zero Stars option? .......2005-02-10
I actually enjoyed Jason's outing with Sam Rivers,
who brought some mastery into an otherwise suspect
conceptual situation. Jason admits that sometimes
he is playing non-sensical phrases in an attempt
to be modernistic. Then there's his jive stuff with
the tape machine, which I won't elaborate on.
But he really went the distance this time by hiring
truly one of the worst guitarists I've ever been
forced to listen to. This Sewell guy does nice things
in the background on Cassandra Wilson's various joints,
but leave the soloing to someone else. The resonator
bits are tasty enough, but that solo on "I'll Play
The Blues" is worse than a high school frequenter of
the local music store and his truly lame attempt to
play uptempo free improv is an embarrassment. Maybe
"JaMo"(which I agree, is corny) hired this poser to
make him sound better, which he does. Jason has some
stuff going on, and his rhythm section is on fire.
But he can, and should do better. Fire the guitar player,
or at least hire any one of the hundred or so players who
could contribute something of worth. Sewell is a real
stinker on this one. Just awful.

An album that slides in an engaging musical groove.......2005-11-25
Playing Time - 42:26
SONGS - Spooky Pass, FireWoman Blues, Oldsmobile Brokedown, Panhandle Rag, Hymnal, ResOlution, Luigi's Revenge, Audrey's Last Dive, Wizard of Wicked, It's Not Too Late, While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Lou Wamp's slide rules! Wamp is an exceptional resonator guitarist with his own unique new acoustic flair. Wamp's album starts with the sound of birds, an owl and Tom Roady's light percussion on an original "Spooky Pass" that allows all of his Nashville sidemen to shine (Byron House on bass, Butch Baldassari on mandolin, and Jim Hurst on guitar). Some of the other eight originals include Andy Leftwich (fiddle), Justin Moses (banjo, bass, guitar, fiddle), Jessica Lovell (violin), Lynn Wamp (arco bass), or Mark Howard (percussion). Talented multi-instrumentalist Moses played with Wamp in the band, Blue Moon Rising.
In addition to the originals are two covers - Leon McAuliffe's "Pandhandle Rag" and George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." The comfortable familiarity of these two pieces are relaxing and refreshing in the overall set of largely original music. Readily admitting that his music is not all traditional bluegrass, Wamp prefers to call it "artgrass," a moniker originated by Byron House to describe their jazzy, new acoustic, bluesy sound. The best example of their firework fingers is on "Oldsmobile Brokedown," a technically impressive piece written as a tribute to the late Gene Wooten. Featured on Volume 74 of "Prime Cuts of Bluegrass," this composition is getting good airplay, even as far from Nashville as The Netherlands.
Wamp has over 20 years in the music business, but he's also an architect, painter, archaeologist, and father to six kids. Besides being a sought after slideman sideman, he certainly has the skill to be a solo artist in his own right. Born in Ft. Benning, Ga. in 1956, Lou had plenty of music (from Elvis to Travis, Bach to the Beatles) around home while growing up. After piano lessons and playing guitar in his high school jazz band, a broken wrist encouraged him to take up resonator guitar. Gene Wooten became a close friend and mentor. Lou played on "Sidemen" nights at the Station Inn and was in a band called Hiwassee Ridge that performed at the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville. Other bands he's worked with include James Monroe and the Midnight Ramblers, The Dismembered Tennesseans, Cowjazz, In Cahoots, The Cumberland Trio, Blue Moon Rising, and others.
With the release of ResOlution, Wamp's artistic and expressive playing and outstanding songwriting will take center stage and earn him even greater fame.
Wamp's dobro playing showcases his expert mastery of hand positions, pull-offs, hammer-ons, picking patterns, bar slants, rolls, and picking sequences. Produced by Butch Baldassari, "ResOlution" is an album that slides in an engaging musical groove. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

I was given this CD a while back and wasn't quite sure what to expect since I've never spent much time listening to Blues before. First I was impressed by the power of the music and the power of his voice and the more I listened the more I felt the "Blues". Great lyrics, great singing and great music - what more could you ask for. Enjoy it! I certainly do.
