This intriguing artifact finds Rose Maddox, one of the matriarchs of the Bakersfield sound, exploring unfamiliar territory. As a honky-tonk singer, she was apt to sink her teeth into a phrase and worry it about a bit before digesting. Bluegrass demands that you chew up a verse and spit it out. Maddox fronting a group led, at times, by Bill Monroe is a little like having Lightnin' Hopkins play guitar in one of Dizzy Gillespie's combos. Of course, such an arrangement implies at the very least that no one is just going through the motions, and the results for Maddox are never less than interesting. --Steven Stolder
