Customer Reviews:
Marvellous!.......2005-11-26
I don't play violin, and I can't even read music, but as a classical music amateur I find this CD outstanding. Even an incompetent like myself can easily understand why Perlman is regarded as one of the greates violinists ever. This is a marvellous collection of pieces. The rendition of "Chanson Russe" by itself is, in my opinion, worth more than the price of the CD. If you listen to the audio samples on Amazon's pages and you like violin you will surely understand why I like this CD so much. I am grateful to People like Perlman, who make this world a better place to live in.
The best violinist ever!.......2001-01-26
All I can say to this CD is it's the best I've ever heard. In this CD, Itzhak Perlman truly demonstrates his best performances of the past years. I have always been a great admirer of Perlman, but since I own this CD, it's all I've listened to for the past three months. I myself play the violin and Perlman has become an inspiration to me, almost a musical idol. For any of those violinists out there, especially young musicians, who don't feel any excitement about playing the violin, listen to this CD and I promise you, you will strive to being able to play like this man does. He is truly the best musician I've ever known.

Customer Reviews:
Handel's Greatest Hits.......2007-02-26
I found this recording disappointing in many respects. The sound quality was much lower than expected, especially on track 7 "Largo" which on the origional, Ormandy had created such a quiet grandeur. In trach 11 "Let the Bright Seraphim" Wynton Marsalis overpowered the singing of Edita Gruberova, whereas the music should always be the backup of the singer, and not vice versa. I don't know what happened to the "Hallelujah Chorus," but it didn't come off very well at all.
CD
Music for feel joy and peace..........2006-11-03
...the music is one of the most authentic feelings from human soul...it says without words the real feeling of the composer and listener...enjoy this beautifyl music to serenate your spirit....thanks God for music..
All Handel's Greatest Hits are not created equal........2004-02-25
Nothing else tops this unusually gorgeous rendering. Leppard's is the finest conducting of Handel to this reviewers ears. Especially the Xerxes Largo and the Watermusic
Hornpipes and Fireworks Oveurture tempi, legato and orchestration is full of warmth and energy. A true chiara scuro interpretation. Fabulous!!!!
Could use more oratorical works, but nice intro to Handel.......2001-08-08
This collection of George Frideric Handel's "Greatest Hits" leans more heavily towards "The Water Music Suite" than his oratorical work, which is my only serious complaint about this CD as an introduction to the composer's work. Although is does have "See, the Conqu'ring Hero Comes" from Judas Maccabaeus and ends with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir doing the "Hallelujah Chorus," it does not have "For Unto Us a Child is Born" from Messiah, which I consider a glaring omission. The "new" piece for me on this CD that is a nice discovery is "Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne (Eternal Source of Light Divine)," performed by Wynton Marsalis and the English Chamber Orchestra.

Customer Reviews:
Thanks for the memories........2006-05-28
This CD features 65 Television theme songs from the late '40s to the early '60s. Most of the more famous shows from this era appeared on Volumes 1 and 2 of this series, so there are some pretty obscure shows on this one. Who remembers "Karen" or "The Everglades"? Of course, there are also some fondly remembered shows, like "Tennessee Tuxedo", "Make Room For Daddy" and "The Untouchables". But there isn't quite as much nostalgia value for me this time around, since many of the themes are from shows I never saw.
Not My Favorite!.......2001-12-06
A few years ago when I was in a TV theme phase I got all the Television's Greatest Hits CD's and most of the collection is good but I was disappointed with Vol 4, probably because I have never heard the majority of these themes and I was bored with The CD, the only themes I have ever heard are Lassie, Make Room For Daddy, Father Knows Best, Ozzie and Harriet, Davy Crocket, Gunsmoke, The Fugitive, The Untouchables, and Candid Camera, the rest are TV shows that I have never seen syndicated reruns of so I don't know their themes. I guess a person should just stick with the Television's Greatest Hits CD's that have themes of TV shows that they actually grew up watching or saw on Nick at Nite or TVland.
Inconsistent, but still great.......2000-05-02
Lots of fun, and I'm glad to have it, but can you really claim any artistic merit for the Roger Ramjet song?
Two other minor points: It's kind of silly to have The Wonderful World of Color on an album called Black and White Classics. Also, I was extremely disappointed in the Fugitive cut without the voiceover. Come on -- is your most vivid memory the music, or William Conrad's voice, " Dr. Richard Kimble, an innocent victim of blind justice..."?
Still, I'm glad I have it. Where else are you going to find Beany & Cecil, Captain Midnight, Soupy Sales, etc. A lot of old friends are here.
The words of Bob Hope's theme song say it best -- "Thanks for the memories."
fabulous but what about..........2000-04-16
I love it, but I really want is a CD of old TV COMMERCIALS! "Winston Tastes Good Like a Cigarette Should..." Speedy's song from Alka Seltzer, "Coke For The Ta-aste Of Your Li-i-ife", etc. Thanks.
My friend Mark Donaldson's TV music soundtrack review!.......1999-06-30
Just simply the best music ever from the fifties and sixties nostalgia era of the history in television on this anthology ultimate collection CD album from every classic shows. Including TV's greatest hits volumes 1 to 7 right here!

Dedicated to the superheroes who decorated your underwear when you were a kid (and many more who didn't), Defenders lets listeners revisit a time when a world in which men who could fly, climb skyscrapers, and morph into green monsters seemed possible. Naturally this lends itself to camp with such kitschy songs as "Wonder Woman," "Astro Boy," and "Batman." There are also some serious compositions that hold up surprisingly well, like "Superman: The Movie," "Escape from New York," and the melancholy "Incredible Hulk," plus "Knight Rider" and "The Six Million Dollar Man." Despite a few glaring omissions--Battle of the Planets, The Omega Man, and Flash Gordon--diversity reigns on Defenders as it progresses from outer space cadets to costumed crusaders to technologically enhanced heroes. Now if only they'd included a life-size poster of Lynda Carter... --Bryan Reesman
Customer Reviews:
Lots of fun and memories........2000-08-01
This one will take you back to the good old days of getting up early on Saturday mornings to sit in front of the t.v. for half the day. Lots of cool tracks on this one, like the 60's version of the Astroboy theme (though the newer one is much cooler, in my humble opinion); Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet (which are sort of like cousins to each other); Underdog; Batman: The Animated Series (one of the most amazing shows ever. Period.); The Green Hornet with it's great rendition of "Flight of the Bumblebee" played by trumpeter-extraordinaire Al Hirt; the original Spiderman cartoon theme (which everyone likes better than the new one); The Tick with it's crazy, jazzy, scat theme; Knight Rider, which is awesome and unforgettable; Max Headroom, the late, great, short lived show that deserved a much better fate; Quantum Leap, one of the most interesting and intelligent shows I've seen. There are many more, some good, some so-so, all interesting choices (Mortal Kombat is one of those 'interesting' choices, as they aren't really defenders of justice. Oh well.) This album is a lot of fun to listen to and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
I had a great time..........2000-05-01
The theme songs were the oririnals from all of my favorite TV shows when I was a little girl! I closed my eyes, listened to my favorites like Astro-Boy, Gigantor, and The Green Hornet. I felt my pigtails grow back, and tasted Bosco on my lips. If you want to go back in time too, I'd recommend this CD highly.
FUN AND UPBEAT.......2000-04-27
The music is from the actual TV shows and films, however some of the tracks (KNIGHT RIDER, SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN) do not contain the dialog that is heard on those shows ("Knight Rider, a shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist"; the communication between Steve Austin and Houston--the track starts at the crash and has Oscar Goldman's dialog, which isn't bad). The music is uplifting and inspiring for writing sci-fi, if you're into doing that sort of thing.
A (conditional) must have..........1999-08-12
This album is comprised of TV and movie soundtrack titles, some of which are original recordings (Superman, Speed Racer, Knight Rider, The Terminator, the bionic series, Quantum Leap - there may be others), and not-so-original (but fairly close) re-orchestrations. I bought this album for "The Flash", and although it is one of the re-orchestrations, it is fairly close to the original and definitely worth having. Both it and Knight Rider are so good, they're goose-bump inducing. If you don't mind skipping over the mind-numbing kiddie show themes, this is a must have!

great collection.......2005-03-15
This is a great collection of classics that are wonderfully executed. A nice addition to any classical library.
Pachebel in Taco Bell.......2002-03-29
You know what would be funnier than Pachabel in the woods, or Pachabel with whale noises, or Pachabel with the sounds of the rainforest in a snowstorm on a July day with a couple camels giving birth? Pachabel in Taco Bell. I would buy that CD.
I'd just like to point out the fact that Pachebel is far and away the worst, most overrated, most boring classical piece ever written. And if it wasn't before, it has been played so much, on so many occasions, with so many stupid accompaniments (yes, this includes with whale noises) that it is now. You want a beautiful piece? I give you Barbar's Adagio for Strings. I give you Meditation from Thais. I'll even give you sentimental, sappy garbage like Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet. Just please, for the sake of good taste everywhere, put down that Pachebel CD.
A great assortment of classical masterpieces........2001-06-27
This is definitely a fabulous cd to add to one's classical collection, especially due to the fact that it contains one of the best versions of Pachelbel's well-known "Canon" in addition to some of his other works. Various historic composers of classical music are well represented here, from Bach and his Brandenburg Concerto to Antonio Vivaldi's "Autumn" from the Four Seasons. Many of the pieces are played by string instruments, such as the "Canon," which is professionally performed by a string quartet. Overall, the Baroque period of classical period tends to be the main concentration of this cd. This cd offers listeners the valuable opportunity to be introduced to classical music that has been played for centuries throughout the world.

Volume 4. A bigger emphasis on rock, and rare tunes........2003-12-24
NOTES: In the early 90's, Priority Records issued several budget priced, short compilations (with only 9 songs apiece) called "80's Greatest Rock Hits."
This particular series mostly featured the rock side of the decade, in a variety of styles and tempos. (There were also separate, similar comilations mainly covering New Wave type songs, and obscure pop hits). This was my favorite of the series, since every edition played like a good mix tape.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR VOLUME 4: PARTY ON.
Another part of the series I got way back in the early 90s. This time it takes more of a hard rock/blues rock route, but still keeping with the general pop theme of the era.
1) "Move it on Over," George Thorogood -- A modern, heavier rendition of the old blues standard. The blues theme is still there, but it's louder and more rocking, thus more fun.
2) "What I Like About You," Romantics -- Although it's somewhat overplayed on the radio and included on many compilations, it's still welcome. The New Wave tinged tune is still a party anthem and somewhat hard rocking.
3) "Mercury Blues," David Lindley -- A one hit song that I'm glad to have collections like this for. A loud, bluesy pop tune about crusing around in a Mercury. Now I know where that old "Buy me a Ford Truck and cruise it up and down the road" commercial got it from.
4) "Everybody Wants You," Billy Squier -- Many people say this guy sounds like Led Zeppelin, and I halfway agree. There's definately a Robert Plant influence in his vocals, but this song is a heck of a lot more fun, and poppier than they ever could be. It's no less rocking, though.
5) "Bang The Drum All Day," Todd Rundgren -- The only song he does that I like, and another great thing it is to have it here. This is a really funny song about a guy who has always wanted to just play drums his whole life. A synthesized, loud pop/rock beat still doesn't date this song a bit.
6) "Rock This Town," Stray Cats -- Here is where 50's rock met 80's pop and rock. I slightly prefer "Stray Cat Strut," but this is a little harder rocking.
7) "Centerfold," J. Geils Band -- Yet another humorous tune, fusing New Wave and classic rock for a poppy yet tough ditty about looking at dirty magazines at school.
8) "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," WHAM! -- The only time it takes a turn for total pop here, with this guilty pleasure dance pop number. It's one of those songs you know you like, but wouldn't want anyone else to know you did. Although it's slightly out of place, it doesn't detract from the quality. In fact, it adds to it.
9) "California Girls," David Lee Roth -- The other cover song here. The former Van Halen frontman does a superior mid tempo cover of the old Beach Boys tune, adding a slightly more rock sound and humorous vibe, while still staying true to the original.
Basically, this is one of the best on the series (next to #6), if just for the total listenability of it all. Not to mention good variety and several more obscure tunes. Highly recommended.
Best Of The Series.......1999-08-26
With the exception of Wham!-who are more pop than rock & roll, every tune here is a winner and really rocks! If Wham weren't included I'd definitely give it 5 stars...why couldn't they have been put on a pop tunes collection?Oh well...

Well Worth the Effort.......2003-01-08
Thinking this gem was a soundtrack collection, I was still pleasantly surprised at the quality of the 'tunes. Of course, some familiar and not-so-familiar tunes were arranged differently than originally heard by sci-fi fans, but the effort and love for music shows. My personal highlight was the more driving version of the theme from "Escape from New York", which made the disk for me, and the version of "Amazing Stories" was quite close to the original by John Williams, which at the time this was released, was extremely hard to find on CD. A worthy effort by a group with an obvious love for sound quality and arrangement. Familiar music with a new twist! Nice!
Heart-pounding music.......2002-10-16
I heard this recording on KCSN-FM in L.A. in full and at first I thought it was snippets from the original soundtracks. As one track followed the next I wondered what movie some of the selections came from. Imagine my delight when I found they were all from the same album. I picked up the first Greatest Sci Fi Hits eons ago on vinyl. They should do a collection! Offer 3 for the price of two or something. Anyway, I enjoyed #4 and intend to pick it up next payday...or maybe for myself as a Holiday gift.--Kevin D. S.F.Music Fan
Great music from great movies.......2001-08-14
Knowing that I'm a big Buckaroo Banzai fan, a friend picked this CD up for me. Of course I immediately listened to "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai" and was so happy to hear what I consider one of the great SF themes played so well. That alone would have been enough to give this a 5 star review. Then I listened to the rest of the CD.
There are so many great performances on this disc. The live performance of the "James Bond Theme" is truly astounding. I recommend this disc highly to anyone with a love for SF music.
Just saw Neil Norman live at G-Fest -It was impressive!.......1999-07-31
Saw NN live so I picked up his CD. The production was superb. Some of the cuts sound better than the originals! I particularly liked the STAR TREK Encounters. It would seem Neil is the preminentmusicologist of Sci-Fi.

THE SERIES IS ROLLING!.......2007-02-28
With Volume 4, the series stays hot. Again, as in all 6 volumes, there are 25 great songs which truly represent the year and a sleek booklet with info on each song. Harder-to-find cuts on a VA compilation are Stan Freberg's novelty "St. George and the Dragonet" and the original song it parodies, Ray Anthony's "Dragnet."
