Customer Reviews:
The Austin Years.......2006-11-15
This and Cosmic Cowboy Souvenir are very fine examples of what was happening in Austin, TX during the early seventies. Murphey eventually moved on to a slicker sound, but these two are down-to-earth jewels.
The sticker on the covers say they were culled from the original master tapes, but I highly doubt that. These discs lack the qualities that are evidence of such a claim - but that won't be a problem for the average buyer - just for the audiophile who buys every disc with the highest of hopes.
Thank You, It's about time!.......2004-08-24
What can I say except this is great, I had just about given up hope of ever hearing these great songs on a CD. Believe me the old albums just weren't made to last this long. These songs hold a lot of old memories for me and bring back some vivid road trip visions of the Southwest. Thank you, Raven Records, please bring back some more of Michaels early albums. Too many people know him only from his recent cowboy work and songs like Wildfire and Whats Forever For. These are great songs but he had so many wonderful pure, bare, and uncluttered songs from his early years that deserve hearing. To me, he is to the southwest what John Denver was to the Rockies, only a little less polished. If you love songs about nature, wanderlust, the road, and cowboys without the glitz of modern country give this a try. Thanks again, I feel like I've found an old friend.

Product Description
Murphey, who is best-known today for his deep-rooted boosterism of cowboy culture, started his recording career with the short-lived Lewis And Clarke Expedition, which cut one album for the Colgems label back in the mid-60s. It was there that his songwriting talent was brought to the attention of labelmate Mike Nesmith, who picked up his What Am I Doing Hangin Round? and cut a version with the Monkees.
After Lewis and Clarke folded their tents, Murphey moved from Los Angeles back to his native Texas, at which time he was signed as a solo artist by A&M Records. His first album for the label, Geronimos Cadillac, wasnt a giant smash (it grazed the lower reaches of the Billboard album chart), but it gained him the notice of his peers. The title track has since been recorded by the likes of Hoyt Axton and Johnny Rivers, and the Kinks Ray Davies even produced a version of it with Brit singer Claire Hamill.
Murphey only recorded a pair of albums for A&M before moving to Epic for his commercial breakout (the song Wildfire), but all the elements were in place, even at this early stage, for the singer-songwriters stardom. The album was produced by Bob Johnston, who gained fame for his work with Simon & Garfunkel, Dylan and Johnny Cash, among others.
Select Direct Releases feature original LP artwork reconfigured to an oversized heavy board minijacket wrapped with an iridescent stock, includes a translucent sleeve to protect the CD. Each jacket is gold foil stamped with a limited edition sequential number.
