Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 2000
While Steve Earle's last album, The Mountain, was an all-acoustic collection of folk and bluegrass, his latest project returns to the trademark stylistic eclecticism that he displayed on El Corazon (1997). Transcendental Blues flows from gentle folk to British invasion pop, from Celtic-flavored jaunts to hard-edged country-rock and bluegrass romps, and as always Earle deftly blurs these lines. --Marc Greilsamer

After Steve Earle redrew a handful of musical maps with 1997's El Corazon, it was surprising to hear the troubadour team with Del McCoury on the unabashed bluegrass set The Mountain. In truth, El Corazon paved the way for Transcendental Blues. Here Earle returns back to the sprawl of El Corazon. There's Spartan, yearning folk in "Over Yonder," boot-scooting 'grass on "Until the Day I Die," and ear-pinning rock on "Everyone's in Love with You." Earle rescues the connection between Ireland and American traditionalism with the mandolin-driven "Galway Girl" and even seems inspired by fables with "The Boy Who Never Cried." Earle shows again and again that he's a consummate indexer, demonstrating how American music crisscrosses distinct styles. As a singer, Earle is alternately snarly, wispy, guttural, and earnest. In short, he's able to shake the ear with a fresh musical twist and then settle the listener with all the broad-minded smarts he's relied upon since his mid-'90s comeback. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars transcends easy categorization.......2007-01-10

Earle continues his exploration of loves won, lost and longing as well as fables, road tunes, blue grass and a heartfelt perspective from death row executioning.
Any fan will appreciate Steve's forays into world sounds.
This is a must have. Don't miss out.

5 out of 5 stars One of his very best and one of this decades best.......2006-08-24

His best since El Corazon and one of this decades best. You can't go wrong with this one if you are already a Steve Earle fan.

4 out of 5 stars For the Fences.......2006-04-25

I love performers who follow their own path no matter what. Lucinda Williams,Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle are the best current examples of this admirable quality.
This group swings for the fences,no compromises. As a result recordings that are unpredictable and unique and sometimes uneven characterise their work.
This cd covers so much ground it took me monthes to get a handle on it. It still feels like three seperate discs.
Still,it contains some of Steve's best work.Every emotion is here.Heartbreak, rage, teen angst,love,hate,sorrow.loss...all from a great story-teller who, trust me, has experianced them all by the truckload.
Give him a shot, this is one of those RARE recordings that offers you more with each listening.

4 out of 5 stars Last of the best.......2005-10-12

This is the last Steve Earle album from what was his prime, spanning from Train a Comin to this release. People will disagree, but after this one the politics started to fight the music for attention. This is an all around good album; very representative of his work post-rehab and pre-protest singer.

5 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2005-08-21

This is Steve Earle's most experimental album. It is a mixture of country, rock, blues, folk, and even has a celtic moment on it. There is some beautiful music on this one. My favorite song is Over Yonder (Jonathan's Song) which is an ode to his cell mate when he was in jail. Also has really great songs like The Boy Who Never Cried and Steve's Last Ramble which IMO are personal songs about Earle himself. Favorites include Transcendental Blues, Everyone's In Love With You, Another Town, The Boy Who Never Cried, Steve's Last Ramble, The Galway Girl, Lonlier Than This, I Don't Want To Lose You Yet, Halo 'Round The Moon, and Over Yonder (Jonathan's Song). Highly Highly Recommended.
