Editorial Reviews

A tough but wary edge often lurks beneath the surface of Lorrie Morgan's sweet, arresting country soprano. That should be no surprise, really: with three failed marriages behind her (including a tragic union with the late singer Keith Whitley), Morgan is a battle-weary, road-tested survivor who has no doubt lived through what younger and callower-sounding songstresses merely sing about. Yet Morgan's vocal resolve often wages an inner war with her abiding vulnerability and longing, which is what makes her so utterly powerful and believable on distraught confessionals like the bitter "Good As I Was to You" and her magnificent reprise of Tammy Wynette's lament "Another Lonely Song." An added treat is her fervent live version of Sarah McLachlan's "Angel." Morgan is every bit as incisive on a hard-edged shuffle like "Trainwreck of Emotion" (her debut 1988 single, which is included here on CD for the first time) as on a spirited romantic plea like "We Both Walk." There are a few clunkers on this 17-song hodgepodge of old and previously unreleased material that masquerades as a "greatest hits" package--worst of the worst is "Maybe Not Tonight," a gooey, mismatched duet with Sammy Kershaw. Still, the overall effect of To Get to You is to remind us in no uncertain terms what an expressive and perennially underrated singer Morgan is. --Bob Allen

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Interesting compilation.......2004-06-06

This compilation was released in 2000, and I suppose it was to fulfill her contract with BNA. Only 5 years before did they release the first GREATEST HITS album. TO GET TO YOU contains 5 new songs, with 12 of her hits. The new tracks are pretty good, especially the ballads. Lorrie sounds just like Tammy Wynette when she sings her song "Another Lonely Song", great song. The title track is a great ballad about love and devotion, same with "If I Cry". Her rendition of "Angel" (from a concert) is chilling. "Whoop-de-do" is not the best but it's a fun piece of fluff. There's some big hits here too, including "Good As I Was To You", "Go Away", "One of Those Nights Tonight", "Standing Tall", "We Both Walk", "Half Enough", "By My Side", "He Talks To Me", "Something In Red", and more. Overall a pretty solid compilation, and the best one out there right now for Lorrie.

5 out of 5 stars Another incomplete collection but the best yet.......2003-04-06

There have been several compilations of Lorrie's music featuring various hits, but none of them are definitive, though this is the best yet. Among the hits included here are We both walk, Half enough, Good as I was to you, I guess you had to be there, Train wreck of emotion, Standing tall and Something in red.

Apart from the hits, this collection contains five new recordings. These include a live cover of Angel (a Sarah McLachlan song) and an excellent cover of Another lonely night, one of Tammy Wynette's less heralded classic songs. There is nobody better suited to singing Tammy's classics, as Lorrie has been divorced almost as often as Tammy. The other three new tracks are To get to you, If I cry and Whoop-de-do.

Lorrie, like me, has very eclectic musical tastes and it shows in her choice of material. Unfortunately, many people these days prefer singers to choose a particular style and stick to it. Because of that, Lorrie's determination to record a variety of material has limited her success. Unquestionably blessed with one of the finest voices in contemporary country music, Lorrie should be a bigger star than she actually is.

If you only want one collection of Lorrie's music, this is the one to choose. Many of the missing hits can be found on her CD in the RCA country legends series. I've already reviewed that and recommend it if you enjoy this and want to explore further.

4 out of 5 stars Morgan Serves Up A Second Helping.......2002-09-03

Lorrie Morgan's second hits compilation starts pretty much where her last one left off, including tracks left off that one('We Both Walk')as well as incorporating singles she'd since released. While there are a couple of holdovers from the previous set, there's still no 'Out Of Your Shoes', and tracks like 'Half Enough' and the new 'Whoop-De-Do' are radio trifle that do nothing more than waste her vocal talent. But when she latches on to something like Sarah McLachlan's 'Angel' or the superb Jon Randall-duet 'By My Side', it only serves to remind the listener that Morgan remains one of Nashville's most underrated vocal stylists.

4 out of 5 stars Another Collection.......2002-02-23

Lorrie released another Greatest Hits collection in 2000 called TO GET TO YOU. It marked the end of her relationship with RCA/BNA. Not long before, in 1995 she released GREATEST HITS, but this offers a more comprehensive collection of her songs, from that album, and from the hits that came after that. As well there are 5 new songs worth raving about. Starting with the tongue-in-cheek "Whoop-de-do", a song with plenty of attitude, its a fun song and nice to see this side of Lorrie. Then there is the beautiful, love and devotion ballad "To Get To You" which Lorrie just masters with her impecable vocals. "If I Cry" is another power ballad, and could have been a big hit if given a chance. She also covers the Sarah McLaughlan song "Angel", and gives her own magic to this touching song. Perhaps one of the most talked about tracks is the Tammy Wynette cover of "Another Lonely Song", which Lorrie does justice to very well! Also includes her hits such as "Good As I Was To You", "One Of Those Nights Tonight", "Go Away", "Something In Red", "Maybe Not Tonight" With Sammy Kershaw, and plenty of others. This 17 track cd is a treat for fans!

5 out of 5 stars Unbelieveable!.......2001-09-03

I bought this CD hoping that it had "What Part of No Don't You Understand," "Watch Me," or "Except for Monday".. Well, when I recieved this CD through a CD club, I was suprised, not because it didnt have what I expected on it, but that it actually had good songs on it. I thought that my first time through the CD, since I didnt hear anything familiar except "Go Away," this would be a CD that would get stuck in a corner of my bedroom never to be played only to collect dust. The only problem was... The songs in the album were awfully catchy. Pretty soon I was singing songs from this CD that most of my (deprived) friends have never heard, and they loved it! This CD suprised me greatly, and remains one of my most played albums I own. I highly recommend this CD!!

Ultra-rare 1998 commemorative concert of both Hall & Oates and Chicago. After the production, these two legendary live performances were never made available on tape or DVD. Only a limited, commemorative tribute 2 CD set through Best Buy Stores (long out of print) who sponsored the tour. July 7th, 1998, these 2 super groups rocked Harbor Lights Pavilion in Boston all night long!! Great interviews, too. Both shows were superb. Daryl & John played: Romeo is Bleeding, Out of Touch, Say It Isnt So, Urges, If a Promise Aint Enough, One on One, Sara Smile, Throw the Roses Away, I Cant Go For That, Maneater. Then Chicago took the stage with: Dialogue- Part I & II, Make Me Smile, Color My World, Youre My Inspiration, Free, If You Leave Me Now, Feeling Stronger Every Day, Saturday in the Park, All Roads Lead to You, Just You and Me, Beginnings, Does Anybody Know What Time It Is, Im a Man, Hard to Say I'm Sorry/Get Away, In the Mood, 25 or 6 to 4. It was a tremendous show for old and new fans, alike.
