Del and the Boys finds the man himself still firmly in charge, and his inhuman tenor all sharp yips and long, high howls, as yet unaffected by advancing age. Its lineup constant since 1993, Del's band cuts as smart as the crease in his best suit pants, and here the quintet's sound is crisply captured by his son Ronnie, who for the first time handles production duties by himself. Ronnie also adds mandolin and vocal color; his brother Rob the nimble banjo rolls. Mike Bub's bass patrols the beat, Jason Carter's fiddle shivers and cries, and both men contribute baritone harmonies. The album's dozen songs include a few McCoury originals, a couple of blues and a gospel tune, plus one rock cover: Richard Thompson's "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" here gets the treatment that was previously applied to the likes of Tom Petty and John Sebastian. All of the foregoing is entirely unsurprising to anyone familiar with the McCoury Band, who prove yet again their utter mastery of traditional bluegrass despite their unwillingness to take much creative risk. --Anders Smith-Lindall

4 out of 5 stars Driving Bluegrass.......2005-09-23

Be careful the first song on this CD "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" will having you searching eBay for an old motorcycle!

Del and the Boys is a good introduction to this driving Bluegrass band. Some have commented that his voice is not for them, but its a classic high lonesome sound.

The lyrics on this particular album are one of the things that keep bringing me back to it. While I live in the heart of "Bluegrass Country", I know what it means to miss Kentucky. While "All Aboard" helps me to remember that the what lies ahead is better than where I've been and that someone is listening to my prayers.

If you ever pass me on the street with my windows down, odds are you will hear this CD playing.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive recording by the best acoustic band in the world.......2003-01-26

The Del McCoury Band is the most awarded group in the history of bluegrass and one listen to "Del and the Boys" is enough to tell you why. Del served as Bill Monroe's duet partner and guitarist for a short time in the early sixties, and since then he has developed into one of the finest singers and songwriters of the genre. His always-smiling face belies his keening voice and the bluesy material he writes and covers.

The "boys" are Del's sons Ronnie (mandolin and producer) and Rob (banjo), fiddler Jason Carter, and bassist Mike Bub.

"Del and the Boys" contains sincere gospel ("Recovering Pharisee"), longing for home ("The Bluegrass Country"), a soaring instrumental number ("Goldbrickin'") and laments for love gone wrong ("A Good Man", "Count Me Out") - all the elements of a good bluegrass album. Ricky Skaggs (vocals) and Stuart Duncan (fiddle) also make cameo appearances.

But what makes this a great bluegrass album are tracks like "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" - Richard Thompson's ballad of motorcycles and redheaded women recast here as an epic redemption song - and "Learnin' the Blues" - a performance whose vocal and instrumental dynamics no other acoustic band can hope to exceed. "Del and the Boys" is sure to lengthen their string of awards. No wonder Del is always smiling.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome return of the high tenor.......2002-09-24

I was exposed to Del and crew first on the Ricky Scaggs PBS bluegrass special and then on Austin City Limit with Patty Lovelace. Del's high-tenor struck me the first time I heard it and has grown on me each time thereafter. I don't seem to hear much high-tenor in today's bluegrass.

Del and his band are tight and right on the money the whole way through both musically and vocally. Members of the band have written about half the songs on the disc which is refreshing (although more would be better).

The first cut is Richard Thompson's "1952 Vincent Black Lightning: ("Red hair and black leather are my favorite color scheme"). The treatment is so good that I probably won't like the original.

"All Aboard" is a "traveling is about the trip, not the destination" allegory full of minor chords and the classic mystical stranger.

"Gone but not forgotten" is nostalgic pop (bluegrass) that harkens back to good days of old that include Cowboys, Hobos, Heroes ("Heroes... Good Guys. White Hats. Fist Fights. Take that! Heroes...") and Daddys ("Strong back. Rough hands. Soft heart. Good man.")

On the whole it's a new album of "classic" bluegrass, in tune, in key, and on fire. This disc has long term repeatability and you'll be singing the songs to yourself in no time at all.

This is a must have purchase. Buy one for yourself and a couple for your friends. Whether they already are bluegrass fans or not, they'll love this disc.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Album.......2002-07-10

I am sorry to say that I never heard of Del McCoury until a few days ago. I heard the band live for the first time at the Down from the Mountain concert tour and was absolutely stopped cold by their extraordinary musical ability. I bought "Del & the Boys" before the concert was over (and so did the guy standing behind me) even though I knew I was paying more than I had to, and I haven't been disappointed. There are some real gems on this album -- particularly "All Aboard," "Recovering Pharisee" (what a great lyric line) and "Goldbrickin" (note the Celtic opening)-- as well as 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. This is a real American sound. What great music.

5 out of 5 stars Giant Sound!.......2001-12-16

Five very talented musicians elicit a gigantic sound from their
instruments. Old timey singing coupled with marvelous acoustics.
Unusual, but this group sounds even better in person but if you
got to settle for a CD, this is a good choice.

This eponymous album from the Italian singer Filippa Giordano confounds expectations. Released on the classical label Erato, Giordano mixes arias with contemporary songs such as the Ennio Morricone-Roger Waters "Lost Boys Calling" from the 1999 Golden Globe-winning movie The Legend of 1900. Using a conventional orchestra sometimes supplemented by electronic keyboards and occasional drums, the production achieves a slick and glossy chart-friendly sound that will find favor with fans of Whitney Houston and Céline Dion. Key to the album are two versions of "Casta Diva" from Bellini's Norma, between which arias from Samson and Dalila, Tosca, Carmen, and La Traviata sit rather uncomfortably alongside several pop anthems. With the vocal flavor of Broadway and a hint of Andrew Lloyd Webber, the intention seems to be to add contemporary crossover appeal to opera in much the same way that Andrea Bocelli has done with such conspicuous success. It's doubtful that serious opera aficionados will care much for Filippa Giordano, though music lovers in general may well find the album an attractive entry into the sometimes-forbidding world of the classical diva. --Gary S. Dalkin

2 out of 5 stars Understand this album for what it is, and what it is not........2007-02-02

Opera aficianados take note - she is not an opera singer. It is pointless to consider her as one. You might as well snipe at a nasturtium for not being a rose. She is a pop singer. If you are looking for nuanced interpretations of classic bel canto opera, why the heck did you pick this album up in the first place? You know where to look already.

I completely disagree with the opera buffs who say that it is a travesty that she recorded these albums and besmirched the great masters. She did not record this for *you*. She recorded this for listeners of pop music. Have you heard what passes for pop music? Evidently not, or you would realize her albums far surpass everything currently in play... and if that is damning to pop music, well, so it is.

If one person... a single soul... listens to this album and is inspired enough to go out and listen to "the real thing" then Filippa Giordano has done them a great service and made the world a richer place. Opera aficionados are not born knowing and appreciating opera. One must be exposed to the music in the first place. Many people grow up having NEVER heard opera. This sort of album has a chance at being played in venues where Callas and Fleming couldn't get feet in the door. To the uninitiated, opera can seem bewildering and unintelligible, full of unfamiliar conventions. Filippa Giordano uses pop conventions to put these arias in musical terms that pop music lovers can grasp. Melodic familiarity goes miles toward connecting people to the emotional core of an operatic performance. Before you spew venom, consider that you are potentially thwarting a pathway that may lead to genuine appreciation of "real" opera down the pike. Bite your tongue. Go listen to your own recordings of the masters. You are right. They are infinitely more sophisticated. But this album has considerable value despite its flaws, and it wasn't created for you.

3 out of 5 stars Opera Geeks, get a life.......2006-05-05

This is an album by a gifted pop singer singing some beautiful classical arias. Now, opera geeks are going apoplectic that this woman has the temerity to do so. I listen to opera, and I am occasionally relieved to hear CDs like this. It's nice not to hear a singer sounding like several people are tightening her Wagnerian corset so hard that she is expelling air through every orifice in her body. It is not the music that keeps opera unaccessible to everyone except pretentious pseudo-intellectuals (you don't need a Ph.D. to appreciate it). No, what has kept opera out of the mainstream is the constipated sounds too many opera singers make. If you like beautiful music sung well, if not brilliantly, you will like this CD. And for the record, I loathe C?line Dion's and Whitney Houston's music passionately, so don't let the first reviewer's comments dissuade you from this CD.

1 out of 5 stars Distasteful...........2006-03-07

Do Banshees really exist ?. Yes they do.....and this abomination of musical history is proof of this....I cannot believe that a record company actually thought that they would even remotely break even on the sales of this grievous, flavorless, repellent and not to mention nauseous anathema of a recording. Shame on you young lady for destroying what were once, beautiful arias. A sad and unpassionate insult to great musical workmanship....

4 out of 5 stars Not really opera, but fun anyway.......2006-02-03

As previous reviewers have said, "purist" opera fans would probably not consider this album to be opera, but it's still very enjoyable. Filippa Giordano will not likely be cast in a Wagnerian role anytime soon; she has a beautiful voice, but it does sound rather thin at times (she's no Maria Callas or Renee Fleming, in other words). It would be very easy to compare her to those other "(p)opera" divas, Sarah Brightman and Charlotte Church, but Filippa's sound is considerably more playful than Sarah's, and more sophisticated than Charlotte's. The highlights of this album are her renditions of "Casta Diva" and "Habanera," and I would recommend it for those two songs alone, but the rest of the album is also very good. This would be a great way to introduce a young person to the genre, as many of the songs could pass for pop songs.

1 out of 5 stars Ummmm...........2005-11-29

Thousand pardons and all, but what on earth is she doing? If she wants to sing like this, fine and well, but why take perfectly fine operatic pieces that are special to some people and absolutely desecrate them by singing them like they are pop?
People who want to sing pop music should not go about advertising themselves as operatic singers, Giordano has the capacity to sing contemp. if she wants, but she obviously has not an operatic voice. If you like people being wormy and stealing from other genres, you will love this cd. If you like opera, you will not.

The stage of Tennessee jam band festival Bonnaroo is an unlikely setting for the year's most important blues recording, but young firebrands North Mississippi Allstars pulled off a creative coup this June with their Hill Country Revue. The concert teamed patriarch R.L. Burnside and his guitarist and rapper sons, the late Othar Turner's fife and drum band, the Black Crowes' Chris Robinson, and eccentric producer-pianist Jim Dickinson, the father of Allstars Luther and Cody Dickinson, with the wiry trio. The historic results handily blend all the racial, geographic, and cultural elements of the genre with adventurous musicality. Burnside, sadly, is past his prime--present more for inspiration than his lackluster contributions. But his sons carry on the tradition while pushing its borders into hip-hop and six-string psychedelia. If there's a star here, though, it's guitarist Luther Dickinson, who playfully quotes Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and the elder Burnside, and then adds a level of tonal and textural exploration to his performance that makes him a one-man defibrillator for the genre--human insurance that the heart of the blues will keep pumping into the future. --Ted Drozdowski

4 out of 5 stars Capturing the Bonnaroo Spirit.......2003-06-21

I was very blessed to be able to attend this amazing music festival. Overall, I was very pleased with this CD, and listening to it reminds me of those wonderful three days I spent in Manchester, TN. I was especially happy that Widespread Panic's "Tallboy" featuring Dottie People was on the CD, because that was truly a great musical moment. Overall, I thought most of the song selections were good, but there were some bands that I wished would have made the CD, for example The Big Wu, Keller Williams, Mofro and Donna the Buffalo. However, all in all, the CD did a fine job, and I especially enjoy the Widespread Panic, Robert Randolph, and String Cheese Incident song selections. Overall, I would recommend this CD for those who attended to festival and for those who did not manage to make it to Tennessee.

4 out of 5 stars Very good chance for someone who couldn't go to get a taste.......2003-04-01

I think this is a great compilation for someone like myself to get a taste of what Bonnaroo is like. This double disc is a great set of bands that I know I like and of bands that I've never heard before but definitely fit in and belong in a festival like Bonnaroo.

I must say that I am very disappointed in the song choice for Les Claypool's Frog Brigade. I am a huge Claypool fan as well as being a huge Tull fan. However, I would much rather hear Claypool playing his own stuff, and I'm sure he provided a vast set of songs that could have been put on this disc instead of Locamotive Breath.

I am only slightly disappointed in the choice for the Galactic song. I have seen them live, and they seriously jam. The song that was chosen for this double disc doesn't really jam. It's still a good song, but I don't think it represents their true style.

To end, I am very glad that I purchased this double disc. It is very well done, and the compilation of music on here makes me even more upset with myself that I didn't make it to Tennessee myself. I definitely recommend picking this one up.

As a potential solution to the limitations that I have read about this disc is that the song chosen isn't what people wanted for a particular band. If a 4-disc set was released with a few songs from each band, I would buy that.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff, even if you are not a "Dead" fan..........2003-03-26

This is an excellent sampler of music that is blissfully free of corporate branding and meant to be heard LIVE. I must say that I come to this scene via the funk and jazz route, so unlike all the people who dig this because of it's "Dead" and "Phish" connections, I bought it becasue I figured anything with Galactic, Soulive, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Norah Jones must be worth investigating. I'm pleased to say that I am now much more interested in Widespread Panic and Ben Harper than I ever was before. And it confirms that Robert Randolph is the next big thing.

The most interesting thing to me is that the free download Amazon lists as being from this CD, Galactic's "Hangnail", is not in fact on the CD, but it is EXCELLENT, and actually better than their contribution to this CD, "Tiger Roll". Fans of this band should download this immediately, it is awesome!

Good job by the producers of this CD to mix up the funk with the roots and southern sounds. (Could have used a Karl Denson song, though. I saw he was on the DVD.) Hopefully the 2003 version will have the funky METERS and Medeski, Martin and Wood! But buy this one to get a hold of a whole scene, and the beauty of music not made for consumer groups.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny!.......2003-02-18

This CD is one of those rare CDs you can listen to in its entirety. It has an eclectic enough mix of artists to keep the serious jam band fan engaged and some incredible performances that will hook someone just entering the genre. It's one thing to put together a compilation of great acts and another to create a compilation of great performances from great bands. This album was recommended to me by a jam band fanatic and I would recommend it to a serious jam bander to expand their collection, to a fledgling jam band fan as a springboard into the scene and to anyone in between. Buy this album.

3 out of 5 stars not what it's all about.......2003-01-06

while yes, this cd does have a good array of decent music, i think the cd itself flies in the face of the jamband scene. i don't understand how one can decide what should go on the cd and what shouldn't. i've never been a fan of "best of" cd's, and this is a perfect example. who's the guy that says norah jones should be chosen over disco biscuits?
also, i had the awful feeling after i bought this disc that i'm supporting a profit-based organization rather than one that truly appreciates the music these artists produce. sure, the cd serves as a vector to open people's eyes to a different genre of music, but it's closing the gap between a jam band and a pop band. plus, 22 bucks?

This is, quite simply, the worst thing to ever happen to music (or human beings really). A horrible fad that got taken to new levels. All parties involved should be ashamed.

1 out of 5 stars Another fad down the drain..........2006-02-17

Thank goodness this song has finally left the radio airwaves, popping up only at cliche wedding receptions. This one-hit-wonder band came up with a song that quickly became annoying after hearing it on the radio about a dozen times a day. (Did anyone bother to translate it?)

At last the Macarena is as dead as the Dodo...and quite frankly the latter would be more beneficial to mankind.

5 out of 5 stars Big memories and good times.......2005-02-23

This CD was the first CD I got Christmas Day 1996. It was in my CD player my mother bought me. The Macarena was always a fun song to listen to when I went rollerskating with my childhood friends. My friend's dad lost feeling in his hands once, and we both played a trick on him, we asked him if he could feel right there in his fingers he said "No." Then the CD went CAN YOU FEEL IT? and it was hilarious. The CD brings back lots of memories and seems to be very cheap to find.

    Product Description

This is pure corn-fed discontent. Former Iowa resident Arecee releases his second record, "Beating a Dead Horse", under NYC's Collekt Records in Brooklyn, New York. His dark melodic beats and thick delivery are a refreshing alternative to today's bubblegum thug rap and purist hip-hop. On the track titled 'Breathe Deep' we hear a glimpse of a tragic past romance gone sour while the up-beat 'Round and Round' features hip-hop heavyweight Supastition. In 'Life is Cartoons,' Arecee proclaims that "hip-hop is stupid"; after watching MTV, I couldn't agree more. Lush self produced beats and deeply personal lyrics make this release a breath of fresh air in today's copycat music industry. Arecee's first release, "Direction for Children" featuring Sage francis, is currently in stores.

if it walks, talks, and quacks like good hiphop well it must be. don't even think about it. just buy it. arecee's second official release shows what hard work and dedication bring to the struggling sound of current hip POP. if you need respite from the inexplicable crap flooding the scene and stinkin up the charts, this is your album.

4 out of 5 stars Earthy medieval sound on ancient instruments.......2005-08-13

Another Amazon enthusiast has written a great review of this disc, so I will just add that the recording was one of the first to be made by BIS in the early 70s, which would perhaps explain why the sound is sometimes not as present or as clear as would have been the case on a newer recording. Also, one must bear in mind that the Joculatores is or was a group of "amateurs" with only one professional musician among them; that is perhaps why the voices sound so "shrill" (male falsettos and highly nasal females). Tracks 13 through 15 were recorded nearly ten years later and the superior sound bears out what I said before. This is definitely an album for people who love the earthy sound of medieval drinking songs accompanied on weird-sounding ancient instruments. One big advantage here is the excellent documentation in the course of which all the tunes are briefly described, the texts of most of the songs are printed in full and the entire gamut of instruments is both described and illustrated by drawings both new and taken from Michael Praetorius's sixteenth-century standard works. It is really great that the Swedish recording company BIS keeps all its old CDs available, and this one is definitely worth having - assuming it is originality and earthiness you are after rather than aesthetic pleasure.

      5 out of 5 stars A buried treasure! Glorious Medieval/early Renaissance music.......2005-02-19

I can't remember just how it was I stumbled across this hidden gem, but finding this wonderful album is the perfect illustration of why I love spending time on Amazon.com just idly surfing and browsing around. Once in a while, while cruising along you come across something amazing which you were unable to find when searching for it directly, but yet you happen upon it at the least expected time when you're not really looking for it.

In this case, I had always wanted an album of Medieval European music, but had never been able to find one which sounded "authentic" enough to my ears. Most albums devoted to such "early" music usually seem overly influenced by the subsequent highly orchestrated and formal Classical music style.

I am definitely not a fan of "Classical" music (which is where Amazon has hidden this album away), but am more interested in world music and traditional folk music. While other parts of the world seem much more in touch with their own musical roots, the "Classical music" era of the past 350 years or so in Europe seems to have completely severed Western Europeans from their earlier musical roots.

Thus it was with great excitement that I listened to the sound clips from this album and realized that it seemed I had finally found what I had been looking for. As this album is an import from Sweden, it took a little while for Amazon to get, but let me say it was WELL worth the wait and I was not disappointed!

The Joculatores Upsalienses ("Upsala Jesters") are a group from Upsala, Sweden founded in 1965 to bring to life the music of the past. This recording which boasts a whopping 28 tracks includes early music from England, France, Germany, Italy and Belgium ranging from the 12th century to the early 1500s.

This album does not sound like it was done in a studio, but is rather a recording of a live concert. True, some of the male singing is at times a bit shrill (tracks 7, 10) and does conjure images of Monty Python's Eric Idle doing the singing, but overall I would say I enjoyed this album very, very much. One can tell that it was with great love and devotion to authenticity that this recording was produced.

To aid in our appreciation of the music, this CD also comes with an informative 32-page booklet (yes, in English). The first 20 pages or so are devoted to explaining the origin and background of each of the pieces played, while the remainder explains each of the unusual and unfamiliar instruments used, and comes complete with an illustration of each. To a complete newcomer to this field like me, this was VERY helpful!

So have a listen to the sound clips and see if you don't agree it is a medieval treat (my fave is track 2). Whether it's background music for your next Renaissance Fair or medieval feast, or whether you'd just like to soak up the ambience of the king's court while doing some idle contemplation, this album is just what the varlet ordered.

The Joculatores are supposed to have 2 other albums available so I intend to definitely track them down too. So what ho, fellow traveller and enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars With that many songs to choose from, should be better.......2003-05-13

This should have been one of the best albums of the year, but the song selection was rather poor. I was quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Show on Earth........2003-04-01

I thought after attending Bonnaroo that there would be no way to document this occasion without a huge CD set. However, they performed a miracle and this 2 CD set is great. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars very good but not great.......2003-01-02

this is one of those concert festival cds that would have been so much better live... some of the tracks live Les Claypool and Robert Randolph really rocked on but other like Bela Fleck and most of disc 2 could have been way better. the one really good thing this cd did is make me aware of the Bonnaroo Festival and who could be playing at it this year! you would be better of finding bootlegs of the show.

4 out of 5 stars -Sample some of the sweetest music around.......2002-11-18

What do you need to know about this compilation? I really shouldn't presume that I know. However, I can tell you what I enjoyed, and why I enjoyed it.
Widespread Panic with Dottie Peoples and the People's Choice Choir-Unbelievable energy,is this gospel music? Is it Southern Rock? Does it matter? Not really, it is simply music that is passionate, vibrant, and great for the soul. This may seem overly enthusiastic, or even maudlin, but I recommend that you listen to the song, and hear the magic for yourself.
Phil and Bobby:Tennessee Jed-apropos right? Fitting for the occasion, and it is obvious that the crowd appreciated the song. What is more, the band is great, and they have such a following for good reason.
Les Claypool's Frog Brigade:Lomotive Breath- The Frogs do Jethro Tull proud; a great cover, a sweet tip-o'-the-hat.
Robert Randolph & the Family Band with Luther Dickinson-Very impressive, such skill, such soul. If you have never seen this band, it is definitely worth your while, what an experience they offer to those fortunate enough to attend their shows.
Soulive-Talent, ability, skill, yes describe it as you will, they do what they do, and they do it well. So funky, so fresh, yet so reminiscent of the musical past. The music combines elements of Jazz past, present and future.
The John Butler Trio-Perhaps not many people know of this band, as they are from Australia, but you just might appreciate this band's blues, jazz, and rock mixture. Sweet slide guitar.
If your curiosity has been peeked in the slightest, get this album, it is musically diverse, and samples some really great music. Hip-Hop, Jazz, Funk, Soul, Bluegrass, Rock, Gospel, classify as you will, but in the end you will be satisfied.

3 out of 5 stars An Ample Compilation..........2002-11-08

Who ever edited this CD set should get a pat on the back. they did a great job, it must have been horrible to have to hack down the hundreds of awesome songs performed by a number of down right rockin' bands. I would like to have seen some of the Disco Biscuit's on this album but more importantly I would loved to have seen some of Colonel Les Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains! That is possibly the coolest live show that I have ever heard! For those of you that share this mutual disapointment should check out the DVD, it contains one song from the Bernie Brains set. This CD contains a lot of the solid performances that were given at the Festival but falls short of the legacy that the Bonnaroo Music Festival left in its wake. There are some blistering performances like the Frog Brigade track but overall it just falls short. If you were at the Festival don't bother with this CD get the DVD, unless you are a completionist. For the rest of you to get a good feeling for the type of music exebitioned at the Festival check it out, they should release an eight or nine CD set including some full sets but oh well!
