good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

How Did It Happen..........2005-03-17

...that the more theatrical, prententious brand of folk canary (ie-Judy Collins) became megastars while a musician like Stuart has remained a cult favorite at best for so long ? Ooops. Just answered my own question. There's a huge range of work on this CD. Old novelty tunes ("Seven Beers..."), blues ("Follow Me, Honey...") and traditional folk ("Seven Daffodils") that would be a mishmash in the hands of a lesser artist. All are unified beautifully by Stuart's no-nonsense delivery on voice and guitar (also banjo, on one track). She even penned a sarcastic little ode to the 1960s coffee house scene in "Beatnik." These tracks both epitomize and transcend that particular era, much like Terry Callier does on his older releases like *First Light*. For a fun and inspiring exercise, compare her version of "Follow Me, Honey" here with the older, even more masterful Alice Stuart on the *Can't Find No Heaven* CD.

Oldie but Goodie.......2004-06-04

Oh, Man - I like Alice Stuart. I like her phrasing, and the way she plays guitar. When I heard "All the Good Times," I was very pleasantly surprised! One can hear the differences in Alice's technique, and the changes in her voice that the years have wrought, but wow - this album holds up really well considering it's age. The recording values are first rate, the quality of Alice's musicianship and her vocals are too.

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

A 'Classic' We Somehow Forgot...........2001-05-03

In 1971, after 'Bojangles' went up the charts The Dirt Band were settling into Colorado, their music was still changing. After the success of 'Uncle Charlie', the group recorded this album. "All The Good Times" is composed of two live tracks "Sixteen Tracks" the first track and "Diggy Diggy Lo", the last track. The album is a little rough, the Cajun imitations aren't all that great, "Jamaica Say You Will" is a little out of place. Songs like "Down In Texas" and "Civil War Trilogy" (a McEuen banjo instrumental) and most of the rest of the album is comprised of excellent country-rock reminiscent of late Springfield, or Poco. It's not that bad, pretty good for an album that has become a forgotten piece of their catalog. A lost treasure.

Resonant, artful arrangements of seldom-heard Christmas carols.......2006-10-01

A lovely collection of traditional carols and dances from Western Europe--some haunting, some jaunty, and all richly orchestrated for voice, keyboard, dulcimer, viola, recorder, guitar, mandolin, double bass and world percussion. This album has the same depth, quality and wholesome honesty of McCauley's other work, and while it starts off on the gentle side, it picks up in intensity as it goes along. Although all the tracks are great, my favorites are towards the end, including the rowdy "Bring Us In Good Ale," the inventive, Mid-East-tinged "Star of the East," and Frank Jackson's folksy arrangement of the 14th century Italian dance "Trotto," which is full of fiery fiddle, thrumming guitar and hints of progressive folk. Throughout their recording career, McCauley and husband/co-producer Kurt Scherer have maintained a core group of truly talented musicians, whose camaraderie and sensitivity to each other's improvisations continues to shine through in each new endeavor. Phil Heaven (bowed strings) and Frank Jackson (recorders and whistles) have been with them since their 1998 debut album, "Sabbath Day's Journey," while guitarist Brian Cunningham and percussionist Jason Darling have been around for at least the past one or two. Joining the team on this album is Lynne Givler on double bass, adding a nice depth and grounding to the sound. Everybody seems to have a Christmas album these days, and "The Moon of Wintertime" is a great one, with a distinctive mood and flavor all it's own. If Jennier Terran has a voice as much incomparable as unforgettable, it is because she is also that in real life. Her authentic and sensual voice awakes up in us emotions so deep inside that thinking of it makes nearly crying of pain or joy, as if truth had a price.
But what makes her music so strong is that mix of serious and humour. Worldwide known, Jennifer Terran is like her music : independent, sensible and fragile, in a different way than musical ways. Brilliant songwriter and gifted singer, Jennifer controls her carrier, smartly and with no concession. She publishes on her label her songs that are all, in a way, only one love story, remembering all the foundations of life.
Her last album, untitled simply "The musician", is approved by all press, and is the following of the two previous albums. Except that Jennifer Terran seems to better control emotions so that she can share it with anybody who would feel the same. A Hidden Treasure.......2003-01-01

I'm a musican with a band called tenpenny opera. I first ran into this album on a website called cdbaby which let me listen to a few tracks. I sometimes shop for emerging artists on this site who may or may not have record deals to date. I had never heard of Jennifer Terran but I loved her music immediately. For me, it's like someone uncovered a Joni Mitchell basement tape that was recorded somewhere along the "Blue" era and inexplicably lost to the world for 30 years. Do yourself a favor and buy the album. You won't regret it.

Unique artist - wonderful music.......2002-03-05

A friend of mine invited me to come along to a Jennifer Terran performance in Leiden (The Netherlands). We both had never heard of her, but the often made comparisons sparked our curiosity. Well, Jennifer proved all the critics wrong - she's unique! She played a wonderful set, and I immediately bought the album, which she kindly signed for me. Her music is very impressive, very diverse, and her lyrics very direct, which goes so well with her music. The opening song, "Liberty Lunch", is achingly beautiful, her voice delivering it with so much emotion. Other stand out tracks are "Santa's Secret", "This Recording", "Sticky Sweet 8 To 5 Lady" and "Sweet Love". I recommend this record to anyone who appreciates originality, female-voices and piano-based music.
