Album Description

Just like the lead character in his classic composition "Mr. Bojangles," Jerry Jeff Walker steps to a different tune. He gave himself the perfect title when he wrote his autobiography Gypsy Songman. Some consider "gypsy" a euphemism for irresponsible, some consider it eccentricity, and some call it artistic license, but whatever you want to label it, it was the fuel that provided the fire in Walker to write the songs he wrote. Walker writes from his own experience. He can take a microcosm of a thought and elaborate enough for its poetry to shine through. Gypsy indeed - this is a man who even chose his own name.

Born Ronald Clyde Crosby in 1942, the youngster grew up in Oneonta, New York, surrounded by music. His grandmother played piano, his parents loved to dance and he spent hours listening to their Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong records. It was his grandmother who bought him his first guitar at Christmas when he was 12 and he learned a few chords from the man who owned the local pizza parlor.

The "Jerry" part of his name came from a false I.D. he got when he was 19, since the drinking age was 21. For several years, he went by the name on that card--Jerry Ferris. After going AWOL from the National Guard in the early '60s, and settling in New Orleans (officially moving to Texas in 1971), he chose a new name. He liked the name Jeff and then partly as a tribute to a black jazz pianist he had befriended, Kirby Walker, he chose the surname of Walker. The friends who knew him as "Jerry" couldn't make the switch as easily, so Ronald Crosby, aka Jerry Ferris, became Jerry Jeff Walker.

The upstate New York-bred gypsy poet who brought the world "Mr. Bojangles" plays the self-made drunken Texas cowboy better than anyone I know. Fine tunes! However, Walker is probably best experienced in his more integrally flavored original albums such as Viva Terlingua and Ridin' High.

Very nice collection of Ronald Clyde Crosby music aka Jerry Jeff Walker. If you don't want everything he has done this is very nice. If you like Texas music look into Bob Wills,Ray Wylie Hubbard,Reckless Kelly,Randy Rogers band,Willis Allan Ramsey,Flaco Jimenez (Texas Tornados), Doug Sahm,Radney Foster,Jack Ingram,Pat Green,Cory Morrow,Gary Nunn,Light Crust Doughboys,Stoney LaRue,Wade Bowen and Guy Clark, just to mention a few!

I was absolulely thrilled to find this collection. It contains cuts that I had not had in my possession for many years. Music takes me away to people, things and events in my life that I don't ever want to forget. If you are a JJW fan, then this is a MUST have.

It's no accident that among the great albums Jerry Jeff Walker has made, most of them have been recorded in front of a live audience. If you want to get the feel of the rowdy Texas music scene of the early to-mid-'70s, look no further than ¡Viva Terlingua!, a rowdy, goat-ropin' classic of sing-along mayhem recorded in the tiny town of Lukenbach in the summer of 1973. Walker marshals his Lost Gonzo Band through a number of tunes that went on to become classics, including Guy Clark's "Desperados Waiting for the Train," Ray Wiley Hubbard's anthemic "Up Against the Wall Redneck," and his own "Sangria Wine" and "Gettin' By." think of austin texas in the 70's...cool longneck beer and tubing down the comal river...this album was popular than and now..classics such as up against the wall redneck mother are still fun...a must for third coast music lovers

One of My Favorite Albums of All Time..........2007-06-02

I don't even consider myself a country music fan, yet this album is in my top five favorites of all time, easily. You really can't categorize Jerry Jeff Walker as "country" anyway...

I think some call his brand of music "outlaw", "gonzo", etc. -- but whatever you want to call it, it is timeless.

Back in the early 70's, my parents used to have big parties, and they would put this album on -- and that was when the party really started. We kids would all be upstairs, listening to the songs and also to our parents getting rip-roaring drunk while shouting out "Up Against the Wall Red Neck Mother". Hearing those songs over and over, I knew all the words by the time I was about 7 years old!

After my dad died in 2002, I was going through his extraordinary album collection, and spotted this gem. I was so excited to find it, and took it quickly before my brother could get to it, LOL.

Other reviewers here have done a much better job at describing the songs, but I just wanted to add an "amen" to the chorus. I also wanted to confirm that you do NOT have to be a country music fan to love this music.

My husband (alternative rock fan) gave me a smirk and a "yeah right" when I told him it was not your ordinary country music. Needless to say (to JJW fans) he has changed his tune, and is now a big fan himself.

Nobody, and I do mean NObody, could play it like Jerry Jeff. Long live Terlingua!!

Still timely..........2007-05-07

My wife and I listened to Jerry Jeff (even drove once for 5 hours through a mid-western snowstorm to hear him in a small Chicago club!)when we were married over 30 years ago... then recently discovered at a college graduation crawfish boil at our daughter's home that many of her friends listen to him now. I decided that it was time to upgrade the LPs, which I still have, to CDs. Hearing these songs again in a pristine, clear state, without the bumps and scratches of the years brings back many memories. I'm on a campaign to encourage friends to do likewise so we can party again like we used to - now with our grown kids and thier friends!

Texas Music.......2007-03-20

OK. So, Jerry Jeff Walker isn't a native Texan. As the saying goes, he got here as soon as he could. With "Viva Terlinguia!" he stamped his Texas credentials for all time. It's rather odd that one of the signature anthems on this Texas Music masterpiece isn't a Jerry Jeff song at all! "London Homesick Blues" by Gary P. Nunn is reason enough to own the album. (I have the vinyl from back in the 1970s.) Jerry Jeff Walker burst into the music world in the late 1960s with "Mr. Bojangles," but that was before he came to Texas. This CD is Texas Music with "Sangria Wine" and "Little Bird" penned by Walker. And, he leans heavily on Texas songwriting legend Guy Clark's "Desperados Waiting for the Train" (another reason to own the CD) and Ray Wiley Hubbard's "Up Against the Wall Red Neck." Hubbard once said, don't record a song unless you're prepared to sing it at every gig. "Red Neck Mother" is one of those songs, and Jerry Jeff pulls it off so very well. "Viva Terlingua!" came out in the '70s country cross-over music surge, but this music--This Texas Music--has a life of its own transcending genres and decades.

Jerry Jeff's masterwork.......2006-06-05

This CD contains all of the tracks from two very different, excellent Elektra albums by Jerry Jeff, "Too Old To Change" and "Jerry Jeff."

With a cohesive sound, emotional depth and breadth, and primarily quiet artistry, "Too Old To Change" is Jerry Jeff's masterwork as "Pancho and Lefty" is the masterwork of Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. The album is primarily acoustic, but the combination of unique arrangements and song tempos and Jerry Jeff's focused, powerful vocal delivery lend each tune a complexity rarely found in acoustic country recordings. The inclusion of a blistering rocker ("Ain't Livin' Long Like This") in the midst of these heartfelt songs sung with mastery, humor, and despair is puzzling until you realize it is another pure expression from Jerry Jeff. The song's inclusion is also contrary and amusing, both qualities familiar to Walker fans.

"Jerry Jeff" flirts with the artistry of "Too Old To Change" with moving songs like "Eastern Avenue River Railway Blues," "Banks of the Old Bandera," and "Comfort and Crazy." But this album contains a broader range of musical styles, including bold rockers ("Lone Wolf," "Bad News"), a Gulf coast love song ("Her Good Lovin' Grace"), even a novelty song ("I'm Not Strange") that is laugh-out-loud funny or, possibly, disgusting, depending on your sensibilities. (Most guys will think it's funny.) The only clunker in the whole bunch is "Boogie Mama," which is lyrically and musically clumsy and sounded outdated even when it came out years ago.

Over the years I have played both of these albums for many different people, and I have never run across anyone who didn't like them. Having them delivered together on one CD is great luck for all Jerry Jeff fans and for anyone interested in uncovering classic outlaw country music. Now all we need is the release of "Contrary to Ordinary," "Reunion," and "Cowjazz," and the world of Jacky Jack music will be right again.

A good introduction to an alt.country legend.......2002-12-05

A legendary '70s troubadour/country clown/stoner god/party animal, Jerry Jeff was an icon 'way back when, and he's still kicking and touring and making great records today. His independently-owned Tried and True label has had a great track record so far; Walker's new material is at least as good as any of his classic "outlaw" material on MCA... This 12-song sampler isn't quite as comprehensive as 2001's somewhat similar "Ultimate Collection," but it's a fine set in and of itself. Includes a surprising number of Jerry Jeff's raunchier cult classics, and will certainly do in a pinch. Diehard fans will, of course, have to seek out the original albums, but anyone who just wants to get their feet wet and see what all the fuss is about will find this disc pretty useful. I wish they could've included "London Homesick Blues" as well, but hey, you can't have everything! This is a good look at a warm, humorous performer with a very human persona.

Unfortunately its true, the Damn Yankees revival took many, many liberties and changed quite a bit of the show. However I happen to like this recording better. "Near To You" as a three way song, is AMAZING. Its worth it just for that song. I'll say the original Old Joe, was better than on this recording, but this recordings Lola is better. So, get both, I did. If you can only choose one though, I would go with this one. The orchestra is so much fuller. Favorite Song: "Near To You"

Worth Buying Just for Jarrod Emick's Thrilling Vocals.......2006-02-19

Okay. Maybe this 1994 revival of Faust in the baseball world isn't as revered as the 1950's original featuring Gwen Verdon. But it has sterling sound quality and is one of the few cast albums that almost allows you to understand the story just via the songs.

It's also a must buy due to the vocal pyrotechnics of Jarrod Emick. Emick's range and power are stunning. He literally blasts onstage as the younger incarnation of Shoeless Joe Jackson. In later numbers ("A Man Doesn't Know," the gorgeous multi-part "Near to You") his voice is quiet, controlled and unique. He sounds like no one else.

I saw the show during its initial release and left the show a fan for life. It's one of those rare times in the theater (seeing Idina Menzel in "Wicked" was another) where someone or something comes out of left field and makes you say "wow." This person is an astounding talent. He seems able to hit just about any note - high or low - and like Menzel can raise goosebumps. He's about to hit Broadway again in the Johnny Cash musical review "Ring of Fire." He should be a HUGE Broadway star and recording solo albums of his own. Why he's not is a mystery.

Bebe Neuwirth fares less well in her comic turn as Lola. While an amazing dancer and great comic actress, her comic faux Latin accent spoils the big "Whatever Lola Wants" number. This may have gone over well in 1950's America. But it's borderline offensive now.

Vicki Lewis, prior to her sitcom days, plays a reporter and delivers a rousing "Shoeless Joe from Hannibal Mo." Her energy and comic timing are impressive. I found her singing impressive. Victor Garber's devil keeps the plot moving along. But it's Emick's performance that keeps the show centered.

Yankee Fan - and Loved It Anyway.......2005-06-16

I saw the musical back in 1994, and met the stars of the show as well. Jarrod Emmick was one of the most gifted newcomers to broadway that I had seen in years, with a voice that could lift a house off the ground. I remembered Victor Garber from years ago, when he was in the movie, "Godspell" - I have his autograph on my tape of the soundtrack, in fact. I also had this album on tape, signed by the principals, but I can't seem to find it - it seems to be lost somewhere. At any rate, I'm not too upset - I still have the cover, which has the cast signatures on it. I intend to purchase the CD, since I don't think they sell tapes anymore. It was a wonderful show, and I deeply cherish the soundtrack which, for me, preserves the wonderful memories I have of the show and the people in it that I met. I would highly recommend it - especially if you were lucky enough to have seen the show.

Sorry -- didn't see the musical. (I'm a Yankee fan!)

I just wanted to clarify the angst over Joe (apparently) circling the bases during his transformation back to a middle-aged man -- rather than catching the final out.

Or at least give an explanation.

In the original novel, Joe DID hit a HR. However, while he was circling the bases, he began transforming back to his mortal self. Gasping and wheezing, Joe crawled his way across home plate.

This is the most comprehensive of Disney collections, though the Classic Disney series is more up to date. Spread across three discs, the set features hits and forgotten favorites from movies, TV, and the parks (although more thorough work remains to be done in the last regard). Since the Disney catalog is in a state of constant change, this is the only place to get some songs that aren't currently available; these days it's a rare treat to hear "Cruella De Vil" from 101 Dalmations, "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah," from Song of the South, and Annette's theme from The Monkey's Uncle. A thick CD booklet is included, putting the songs in the context of Walt Disney's long, astounding career. --John Sanchez

The Best Dinsey Collection.......2002-01-25

This expansive and detailed collection of Disney music is the best out there. I've had mine since it came out in 1991, and I can't tell you how many times I've played each of it's three CD's!

CD 1 starts off with the first Disney song in a cartoon, 'Turkey in the Straw' from Steamboat Willie and travels through the years (and 27 tracks) to The Sword and the Stone with 'Higitus Figitus'. Along the way films such as Pinocchio, Fantasia, Melody Time, Song of the South, Treasure Island and Sleeping Beauty are covered.

CD 2 picks things up in 1962 with 'Supercalifraglisticexpialidocious', and runs through 20 tracks to 1991's 'Beauty and the Beast'. No rare songs are included on this disc, but a song or two from each animated film made in this time period is nothing to balk at.

CD 3 heads in a new direction (that of live action, cartoon series and the Theme Parks) and serves up many gems and rarely heard recordings. Some of the 31 tracks included are; 'Enjoy It', 'The Ballad of Davy Crockett', 'Mister Piano Man' sung by Annette Funicello, the 'DuckTales Theme', 'Meet Me Down on Main Street', and the entire score for the 'Main Street Electrical Light Parade'!

This set goes one step further by including a 60-page book that illustrates with words, and many full color pictures, Disney's musical legacy and packs it in a record sized keep-sake box. Much of the information in the book is enlightening and it does a superb job of giving backstory to the creation of the songs included. I've refrenced it many times and have always found it helpful.

Yes, this set doesn't include songs from Toy Story, Tarzan or any of the more recent Disney offerings, but remember it was made in 1991. No matter though, over 10 years later, it's still the best and most comprehensive collection to date and believe me, I have enough Disney recordings to know! It's IMPOSSIBLE to be disappointed by this collection!

This is by far my favorite of Disney Albums. If I could have designed it I would have made the first disc 100% animation, the second for live action and TV, and the third music from the parks.

The only reason that the score isn't higher is because I would have liked to have more music from the parks.

That aside, this is a great addition to the CD collection.

A Jewel in the Crown of Disney Music.......1998-08-05

The Music of Disney: A Legacy In Song is one of the strongest complilations of Disney music to date. The box set offers a sampling of timeless classics such as It's A Small World (After All), Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah and Someday My Prince Will Come. Not to be missed are some lesser known treasures including The Swamp Fox and Fortuosity. The box set features songs from theme park attractions, animated movies and cartoon shorts. With seventy-seven songs to choose from children and adults alike will be entertained for over twenty hours. The arrangement of songs also adds to the uniqueness of The Music of Disney: A Legacy In Song. Medolies of songs are arranged to compliment each other. Theme park songs are arranged fairly close together to allow an even flow throughout the cd. You will find no choppy arrangements in this compilation. Another feature that impressed me was the value of the box set. With the typical cd ranging from $12.99 to $18.99 for ten songs, it is a great valu! e to find almost eighty songs for about forty dollars. The title of this piece is correct in its wording of "A Legacy In Song." It indeed serves as a timeline of Disney music. I highly recommend The Music of Disney: A Legacy In Song to children of all ages. Its a way to bring home the magic of Disney into your own living room.

The perspective of a new Fan.......2006-01-15

My wife mentioned she would like to see JJW, and having never really listened much before, I grabbed tickets to The Grand Opera House in Galveston for last weekend 1-7-06.
He played most of what you recognize from hearing on the radio.
The compilation of his Best of the Rest is a great batch of songs you can hear over and over again. You can just get lost in the music that makes this man the artist that he is. From the friends he's known like Charlie Dunn (look this up on http://www.famoustexans.com/charliedunn.htm)to the highs and lows of the life he sings about, this is a must have album.

Catching up with the Past.......2007-01-29

Growing up in Indiana during the 60's did not afford much opportunity to find music like Circus Maximus until I discovered I could listen to WBZ AM 1030 from Boston late at night. A whole new world of music opened up to me including bands like Ultimate Spinach, Strawberry Alarm Clock and Circus Maximus. I was able to purchase the original Vanguard LP and still have it safely stored but unplayed for lack of a turntable for many years.

Everyone remarks about the song "The Wind" which is certainly one of the highlights of this album. But if you take the time to listen to the other tracks you'll find some incredible music that is so emblematic of the era. Sure it sounds a little rough and edgy compared to many things we've heard since, but there is raw energy in this album.

For all the years I've had this album it was only with the CD release that highlighted the work of the previously unknown Jerry Jeff Walker that I connected the more recent work of Jerry Jeff with his roots. For a number of years I hosted a radio show and played a fair amount of JJW but never connected the young Walker with the one performing today.

But this album! You won't be sorry.

Classic 60s.......2006-10-18

Yeah...it's evident that the gem song on the Lp (today CD) is The Wind. It is so far above all the other songs that it takes a while to appreciate the rest of the album. And Jerry Jeff Walker is no slouch...went on to carve out a nice career for himself. I found it strange that he was one of the members of this psych/pop band but I was always a JJW fan anyway. Desperados Waiting For a Train, etc. But...it's the combination of beat lyrics and existential piano/bass throb that sets The Wind apart. And you've got to put it into perspective. At that time, the music world was dominated by playlist-heavy AM radio stations and FM stations only came on from 8-12 at night. This kind of music was hard to come by and once heard, the search was on for the source. All that being said, guitar solo in The Wind is very Eight Mile High-like and just as sloppy, and the piano solo is fairly mediocre, with blatant punch-in edits all over. But put it all together and the elements combined transcend the parts. Which is, of course, what great music is all about.

Years ago had had an original copy of this album and many more that wound up getting lost or stolen. Like some of you have posted I also heard this song on the best progressive radio station at the time. WNEW FM 102.7 in NYC Some of you reading this may know about NEW and it was Allison Steele "The Night Bird" who would play WIND often on the station along with other classics that are now called lost. They were not lost back then. I just placed an order for the CD tonight. Why you may ask. Because I was listening to my Sirius satellite radio on the Classic Vinyl channel and in 2 seconds I realised it was WIND. Don't confuse this Circus Maximus with some upstart band from Noway using the same name. Enjoy

As have other reviewers; I, too, made a personal quest for this album just to have in my possession that delightful jazzy number titled "Wind". However, I was fortunate enough to find it on an original Vanguard LP pressing. Later, I would also pick up this CD release. Let me state flatly that the sound of the LP is warmer, not as compressed sounding, and devoid of a few technical hiccups found on the CD. Though slightly disconcerting, these few glitches wouldn't dissuade me from recommending purchase of this disc, mainly since its now the only available method of hearing this ingratiating album.

Yes, the bulk of the songs are mostly derivative in style and substance. Those tunes written by Bob Bruno (with that one fabulous exception!) will take you back to a time when jangle and fuzz guitar and organ were all the rage. It would make for good background music at a mid-'60s retro party. The tunes of Jerry Jeff Walker are played and sung in a disarming folk/pop manner with lyrics exuding a developing heartfelt cynicism. Present-day fans of Jerry Jeff would definitely get a kick out of this!

"Wind", however, is a tune that transcends everything else to be heard here. Why it strikes a chord with so many is difficult to pin down, suffice it to say that its charms are both true and timeless...and make the album well worth the purchase.

Please ignore several of the other reviewers if you love real rock'n'roll (as opposed to jazzy or folky snoozers). This debut Circus Maximus album is chock full of both jangly but frenetic folk-rock and killer, fuzzed-out garage punk ("Rest of My Life to Go", "Bright Light Lover"), making it Jerry Jeff Walker's finest hour. In marked contrast, the interminable "Wind" surely ranks as one of the two worst songs.

Sometimes you just need some old-fashioned rock and rolling, comboy style. That is the roots too. If you, like I do, every once in a while need to hear about whiskey bars, fly-by-night hotels, pool playing hustlers, sad-eyed gals, flossies, no-name susies, broken-down cowboys, low down hotels nighttimes smells, guys saying what the hell at the last chance motel you have come to the right address. This is the album that started it all for me. This was the first Texas artist I was ever exposed to, and this is the first Texas Music album I ever bought. Now I am a bona-fide "up-against-the-wall" Texas Music NUT! I had to buy this CD because I wore the tape out! This album is not only a staple in a JJW collection, but a must-have in any Texas music collection.

The most important part of any Jerry Jeff Walker collection........1999-06-16

Any red-blooded Texan ( or those who want to be ) knows the words to "Redneck Mother" and the following "London Homesick Blues". Add to that the classic "Mr. Bojangles" and you have the definitive JJW album. The recording quality is superior to many other JJW offerings, but still has the "ice-house sound" that comes from the juke box at 1:30 am. This is the one...The cover should hang in a place of honor in the Capitol in Austin, with a map below giving directions to Terlingua.

Vintage Jerry Jeff.......2002-10-12

This is a great listen. Bojangles and My Old Man are favorites. I saw Jerry Jeff some yrs back at a small club. Just him and 3 guitars. Near the end of the show, I asked Jerry Jeff for "My Old Man" he put down his Ovation Electric and picked up his D28 saying "This is the right one that one." He started singing the song and I could see it was a very personal song for him. He filled to the brim of his hat with raw soul and got through it. After the last note he set the guitar back on it's stand dipped his head and said "Train Time" and he was gone. One of the greatest performances I ever saw.

The Incredible Hulk and the Real Bojangles.......2002-04-27

This is early Jerry Jeff (1968), part country/bluegrass, part rock and part folk, from back in the days when musical experiments across genres were newsworthy and important. The sound is stripped down and intimate, as if the band were performing in your living room. Today's recordings lack this relaxed spontaneity. Jerry Jeff's songwriting is as good as he ever got, his singing is gimmick-free and straight-up, and the band, led by bluegrasser David Bromberg, has an appealingly loose, rolling sound. The drummer Bill LaVorgna gets credit for a lot of the punch offered by this music, with his off-tempo whacks at the canvas, especially on "The Ballad of the Hulk". The mood shifts from song to song, including gorgeous ballads and up-tempo country rockers.

There are two standout songs, the world-famous "Mr. Bojangles" and "The Ballad of the Hulk." "Bojangles" is the only truly well-known song Jerry ever wrote, but his own version - the best - is not one of those more often played. Only Sammy Davis Jr. did another version really worth listening to. The song actually appears twice on the CD - in it's album version (without strings) and the single version (with). Jerry himself disparages the strings, but I think they are done nicely and it's great to be able to choose to hear one or the other. "The Ballad of the Hulk" (based on the comic strip character The Incredible Hulk") is no ballad. It is an humorous-angry epic of social commentary, set to rollicking drums, fast acoustic picking and a snappy organ - 7 minutes long and well worth a careful listen. The line about a "twisted priest advising me how to raise a home and family" rings a bell given today's (and I do mean TODAY's) headlines.

Any fan of Jerry Jeff Walker should have this, and even those who don't care for the "outlaw" Texas troubador he has been since the 70s might find this appealing - even compelling music.

Early Jerry Jeff at its best.......1999-04-21

You can definately tell, in listening to this album and more recent ones, how Walker's voice has matured and his music progressed. The CD contains many early Jerry Jeff essintials, including the original Little Bird, I Makes Money Money dont Make Me, and my favorite, Maybe Mexico. A number of the songs reflect Walker's discontent with his place in life as a young musician--this is Jerry Jeff Walker's music before he found his click singing songs about Texas.
