Maverick director Robert Altman handpicked country star Lyle Lovett to score his latest film, and with the help of pianist Matt Rollings and bassist Victor Krauss, Lovett has accomplished the feat with his usual level of professionalism and personal touch. Lovett has always been one of Nashville's outsiders, soulful and smooth yet intelligent and menacing, just as likely to emote from a gospel shout or blues holler as from the expected Nashville twang. "You've Been So Good Up to Now" and "She's Already Made Up Her Mind" are reprised from Lovett's acclaimed Joshua Judges Ruth album, and the tracks are indicative of Lovett's subtle touch, as both unpeel their emotional turmoil slowly. The new instrumental numbers range from the haunting theme and the New Orleans goodtime of "Opening Credits," to the old-time honky-tonk of "Golf Cart Love" (which begs for a Lovett vocal) and somber piano ballad "Lady of the Lake." Mostly, though, it's lots of barrelhouse piano and fiddle-fussing around from a simpler time. The one new vocal number, "Ain't It Somethin'," is a dirge about how we silly humans can make the most mundane things seem so significant. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:
Quite possibly Howard Shore's best work yet..........2006-08-24
I've always enjoyed Howard Shore's work, even way before he became a household name with the mammoth scores for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I personally feel that he is at his best when doing the scores for Cronenberg's works.
With Naked Lunch, I think Shore managed to create a perfect soundscape to go along with director David Cronenberg's crazed adaptation of William Burrough's cult novel. Shore, along with famed saxophonist Ornette Coleman, join together to create a strange hybrid of mood music and frenetic jazz that fits the film perfectly. This isn't typical jazz and is very free form but still, it's definitely one of the best film scores I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. It's not for everyone but if you appreciate a good, moody movie score, look no further for this is one of the absolute best.
Lastly, it reminds me a bit of the score that he did for "The Cell", due to the Middle East sounding bits laced throughout the album and out of all of his scores, I'd say it resembles that one the most. The lonely saxophone also reminds me of the score for "Angel Heart", the sax in which was played by Courtney Pine.
great film,just as great music!.......2005-11-20

In the Mood for Love?.......2004-02-26
This CD of 14 romantic standards played by a lush string section with full orchestra sure helped my love life. And it's also really relaxing too if you're not in the mood...if you know what I mean. A companion CD to Romantic Piano, Heart of Country and Romancing the Screen, all released recently by Reader's Digest Music. High quality stuff if you like this kind of thing--and I did!

Customer Reviews:
From the samples it sounds like another winner to me.......2000-10-25
I just wanted to correct the review. "Ain't It Something" isn't new. It's on the I Love Everybody CD. Lyle Lovett has put out 3 or 4 cds since Joshua Judges Ruth and they're all worth a listen.
This one should earn a permanent spot in the CD Player.......2000-10-24
For any of you that are Lyle Lovett fans for his style and the talent he brings to the stage with him, this CD is for you. If you're a fan of the Large Band, if you dig the Texas sound - this CD should earn a permanent spot in the CD player next to Live in Texas and Road to Ensanada among others.
I haven't seen the movie, but from the names of the title tracks, I bet you could pretend you had. The first track, "Dr. T's Theme" gives you a taste of a sultry cello-laden beat soon to be accompanied by inspiring piano melody later intertwined with spectacular acoustic guitar. I just hope Lyle can play this one on his next tour. You'll get a fill of sexy lounge piano and cello in "Mall Women".
If it's Texas Music you're looking for, the "Bree Shuffle," "Golf Cart Love," and "Bridal Shower" will transport you to the nearest honkey tonk in Dallas - ok maybe an up-scale-ish honkey tonk you might find Lyle playing at, but never the less, a honkey tonk in Dallas, or Austin perhaps.
For the famous Lovett Lyrics, while this album is mostly instrumental, there are a few songs that will satisfy the craving. The songs with vocals are also on his album "Joshua Judges Ruth" (except for the last song, "Ain't It Something") so if that's all you're looking for, there are more vocals on "Joshua Judges Ruth". "You've Been So Good for So Long" covers the rock/electric guitar slides in there. And "She Already Made Up Her Mind" is more ballad-y like Road to Ensanada or something similar.
And I can't finish writing about this album until I comment on Lyle's response to hollywood. "The Crash" is a score that doesn't match the "Texas" style theme music he's got going on in the rest of this album. You could put this one on for Halloween, it's fantastic....
Grrrreat!.......2000-10-18
I love this cd! The music is just the kind I like. Not like these action packed film soundtrack's with the with the blast through the wall rock music. This was nice. I liked almost all the songs on this cd. It will definetely be a favorite!

A Rich & Robust Score.......2001-06-19
Many of you, like me, may have been wondering what the difference is between this score and the one that was released in the early 90's, also on the Marco Polo label. Well firstly, the earlier release was not complete and also included tracks from House of Frankenstein. This new release basically happened because composer, John Morgan, was unhappy with the initial release and wanted another crack at this forgotten score. The result: a fully complete and terrific score from the 1942 Universal classic, Ghost of Frankenstein. Morgan was able to pull together the resources that Hans J. Salter himself did not have to record the original and give us the score as it was originally intended. Recorded under the supervision of Salter, just before he passed away, this is hands-down the best release of the monster scores from Marco Polo to date. Do not pass up.
Way over the top!.......2000-06-08
This music is far and away beyond being exceptional! Messrs. John Morgan and William Stromberg have yet again exceed their past triumphs (I have no clue how they keep doing this!). Where to begin? Perhaps, with some numbers: five stars (out of five) for restoration, arrangement/re-arrangement, and cue selection/editing; five stars for presentation (conducting and orchestral performance); five stars for recording and mastering; and five stars for the fascinating (and huge!) CD booklet courtesy of Messrs. Bill Whitaker and John Morgan (the photo on page 33 is worth the price of admission alone!). With a new orchestral venue and technical crew, Mr. Stromberg has once again "come into his own," acoustically speaking; the technical aspects of past recordings with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra has often been ham handed and uneven to the point of distraction. But the sound on these tracks is definitely 21st Century in quality! For those new to the neighborhood, just who are these two film composer folks--Frank Skinner and Hans J. Salter? Well, among other notable achievements, they saved many a Universal programmer during the late 30's and early-to-mid 40's (and very likely the studios's bacon to boot). When you view Universal's "second wave" of horror films even today, two things instantly grab your attention: the stunning photography and the inventive, pulsating music. "(These) pictures were a great challenge, because ... before scoring they didn't seem to have much fright about them or cohesion either. They'd screen one of those pictures for us without the music, and it would be nothing. The challenge was in creating the sense of terror and suspense, and that is something music can do. All the pictures we saved for them!" Mr. Salter is quoted as saying in the CD booklet. Like many of the film scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Salter and Skinner's music transcends and is enormously superior to the films for which they composed. Until Messrs. Morgan and Stromberg got the bit in their teeth, Salter and Skinner's film scores had served to elevate fair-to middling films, but, in turn, it was the poor reputation of these movies that served to suppress vastly underrated film music! NONE of this music has ever been heard like it is presented here. The Universal studio orchestra had barely 40 players; this CD uses a full symphony. Also, Mr. Morgan was able to work extensively with Mr. Salter on restorations during the final year's of the latter's long life. To quote Mr. Salter once more from the CD booklet, the executives at Universal "never knew what they had" in the way of music talent. I strongly recommend that you don't make the same mistake. Latch on to this CD while you still can!
Much of this shows its classical roots.......2000-05-17
Some music is great fun, either in itself or by personal associations or both. So when Marco Polo issued selections from the Salter/Skinner scores to "Son of Frankenstein," "The Invisible Man Returns," and "The Wolf Man" back in 1995 and followed up with the complete film score to "House of Frankenstein" by Salter and Dessau, I could not keep from grinning foolishly hearing it, all the time realizing how good some of it really was.
Now we have
(8.225124) that treat us to 22 cuts from "The Ghost of Frankenstein," 8 from "Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror," and a taste of three other films. The very generous program notes tell the whole story, with good lobbycard illustrations, of how this team worked together--one slept as the other worked--and I leave it to you to read all about it for yourself. As for the music itself, listen to the "Monster Theme" in the first suite and think if you will of how Wagner treated the "Dragon Leitmotif" in "Siegfried" to appreciate how classically grounded much of this music is in the tradition of Weber, Wagner, and even Richard Strauss. Not all of the selections are of high quality, but enough are to merit this offering a high rating.
Happy and spooky listening, folks.

This is a genuinely useful introduction to chant. The carefully prepared, scholarly performances are still alive with feeling and meaning. The recordings, while filled with churchly resonance, are so clear you could take dictation from them. The many selections are highly varied and programmed for contrast, so that, contrary to most people's expectations, this disc will not put you to sleep. The program notes sketch briefly an interesting history of the music, useful for the general listener but not insulting to the specialist. All that's missing is the texts and translations, a strange omission that could spoil the disc for many potential listeners. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Needs the text and translation!.......2000-06-23
If this disc came with the text and translation for the chants, I would give it five stars. The description of the history of such chants is a good introduction, and the recording itself is crisp and clear.
However, if you don't already know a lot about chants or don't know Latin (mine's too rusty), the disc is little more than beautiful singing. If that's all you're after, I'd easily recommend this disc, but the text and translation are important enough to me that their absence is worth two stars.
Maybe the text and translations are available somewhere on the internet - I haven't checked yet.
