In a career that's veered from '70s pop chanteuse to Broadway star and neo-operatic diva, Sarah Brightman has brought a critics-be-damned sense of dramatic scale to nearly every project she's tackled. As the title suggests, the tracks here are largely culled from her Songs That Got Away and Surrender song anthologies, although they do include four previously unreleased outtakes from those collections. Her 1998 recording of the title song from ex-husband Andrew Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind succeeds by emphasizing its melodic grace with a deft, airy touch, while the remainder rescue worthy songs from obscure or failed musicals. From Lerner and Lane's 1959 Carmelina comes the lovely "One More Walk Around the Garden." Stephen Sondheim's youthful 1954 debut, Saturday Night, yields a sprightly take on "What More Do I Need," while an operatic reading of "In the Mandarin's Orchid Garden," from the Gershwins' unproduced 1929 East Is West, is also included. If the selection leans a little too heavily on the Lloyd Webber connection elsewhere (including Italian versions of "Guardami (With One Look)" from Sunset Boulevard and "Piano (Memory)" from Cats delivered in her patently restraint-free soprano), they're only reminders that shrewdness has hardly been the least of Brightman's talents. --Jerry McCulley

Encore is the perfect CD for those who love diversity. Classy, Romantic and Stirring. My two favorites are Piano and One More Walk Around The Garden.
Piano (Memory)is even more soul stirring in Italian than the english version.If the english version was perfection she improved upon it. One More Walk Around The Garden is sad and soul stirring bringing a tear to the eye on every play.Sarah sings her way through every song with the voice that earned her the title Angel of Music.Everyone a Gem. A must have for every true fan.

Overall I was very pleased with the content and quality of this CD. Once again, Sarah sings beautifully. I rated this 4 stars instead of 5 simply because, like another reviewer, I, too, felt that it contained too much old material. I used to enjoy 'Memory' but it's been overdone to the point that I cringe when I hear it now. It's sung in Italian here and called 'Piano' but it's still 'Memory'.

I especially liked 'One More Walk Around the Garden' (Carmelina), 'There is More to Love' (Aspects of Love), 'The Last Man in My Life' (Song and Dance) and 'Chi Il Bel Sogno Di Doretta' (La Rondine). 'If I Ever Fall In Love Again' (The Crooked Mile) is especially well done as well.

I do enjoy playing the CD but I find that I pick the songs that I play rather than allowing it to play all the way through.

The title of the CD is perfect. Sarah has a beautiful and flawless voice and her singing just pulls you in. If you like Sarah Brightman, this is a wonderful CD to add to your collection. I have only started to collect her CDs from concerts she has done and I love every single one of them! BUY THIS!! You won't regret it!!!

Sarah Brightman sings beautifully. That's not even up for debate. Her choice of material is generally interesting as well. She runs through a wide variety of genre and regularly comes up with excellent pieces from each of them.

`Encore' is a compilation of material recorded between the late 1980's and 2001. It features strong renditions of `Away from You' by Rodgers and Harnick and `In the Mandarin's Garden' by George and Ira Gershwin. The orchestration on `If I ever Fall in Love Again' is a bit overblown but she sings the piece with sincerity, and very well. Her cover of Lane and Lerner's `One More Walk Around the Garden' is a thing of beauty. The same can be said for her handling of Sondheim's `What More Do I Need'. The weakest moment in the set comes during Puccini's `Chi Il Bel Di Doretta'. She sings it well but her voice doesn't quite have the pure power needed for the piece and there are moments where the strain shows.

Sarah Brightman really shines when she sings music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Her voice takes on an extra richness. He wrote the music for nine of the fifteen cuts on this release and can be identified as the composer of each one just by the tone her voice takes on when she begins singing any one of them. It's softer, richer, more expressive- it's as if there's an extra facet in her voice and spirit just for his compositions. He produced this collection but I don't believe that was a factor. The same thing struck me when she performed the material from the Phantom of the Opera that appeared on her La Luna concert DVD. `Think of Me' as performed by her was the song that attracted me to her voice even when I was less than sure of the scope of her talent. The recording here is the recording from `Phantom' and it's still stunning. `Piano' is hauntingly beautiful. `The Last Man in My Life' is given a ravishing performance. `Half a Moment' is devastating. The list goes on. There's not a weak cut from among his material. Webber's songs stay with the listener. Their melodic are lush and rich and have enough scope and variety to remain interesting over a long period of time. His orchestration is sumptuous, elaborately textured and a little sweet in the way that touches the listener as a caress. When she sings them they become all they can be. This isn't his music or hers. It's their music.

This is an excellent collection because of the way it showcases this. The material here has been (unkindly) labelled as `ear worms'. To an extent the term is accurate. Show tunes do lean toward catchy and easily accessible melodic lines. Their lyrics are often shallow. What's presented on this collection has more than its share of all of these faults. It's impossible to be cynical about it though. These songs, particularly the numbers penned by Lloyd-Webber, are strong on their own. When they're performed this well, and with this amount of affection, they're captivating. The quality of the sound on the release compliments the material beautifully. It's rich, lush and always crystal clear. Sarah Brightman herself is always a pleasure to listen to. Her voice it has a sparkling quality that's radiantly beautiful. The material on this collection shows that beauty to its fullest.

Listen to her singing these songs and let them wash over you. It's the perfect antidote for cynicism.

When I bought this Cd, I knew that I already had much of the music already, but there were a few new songs. I just had to get it for that reason. And I had to get it so that I had more than one recording of Sarah's finest songs. I absolutely love her and feel she was and is the ultimate Christine in "Phantom." I know I would be in a minority. I think she is past that part of her life and could not play the part again, but how I wish I had seen her. I could only imagine. If you have never heard Sarah sing before, this is a perfect CD to introduce her voice. The fact that she can sing so many different styles always amazes me. I suppose I appreciate that since I am a singer myself. I recommend this Cd to anyone.

Both of these discs afford great pleasure. The Lloyd Webber compilation presents many of his biggest hits in fine performances by his ex-wife. The Encore disc gives fascinating glimpses of worthy but little known pieces from musicals. Arrangements are wonderful, and Sarah Brightman is in excellent voice throughout. At times she has a tendency to wax a bit operatic, but she certainly does have the chops to bring it off successfully, so I'm not complaining. Obviously, Ms. Brightman was trained in the classical tradition, and she knows how to use her voice to best advantage in service to the material. In short, she has musical integrity.

Before she was a sparkling pop/classical diva, Sarah Brightman was a Broadway star and the onetime wife of the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber. This two-disc set that includes her "Encore," a collection of songs from mostly-obscure musicals, and "The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection," several of Webber's songs (mostly picked from "Songs That Got Away" and "Surrender").

"Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection" starts off with the gothic "Phantom of the Opera," but quickly moves on to lighter fare in the airy "Unexpected Song," a soaring duet with Cliff Richards in "All I Ask Of You," the sparkling "Love Changes Everything," and some tepid forays into the shrill "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" and "Memory."

"Encore" is far more ethereal and steady. The piano-led "Whistle Down The Wind" starts it off on a strong note, before the aching "Away From You," operatic "Think of Me," affectionate "If I Ever Fall in Love Again," and the symphonic "Nothing Like You've Ever Known." A particular highlight is the sparkling "What More Do I Need," a little tune that celebrates how love brightens up even the most dingy little apartment, in the most miserable weather. "With your love/what more do I need?"

Sarah Brightman was obviously on solid footing with these two CDs. It might leave a bad taste in some fans' mouths that "Collection" is mostly compiled from a pair of other Brightman albums, but if listeners don't have "Surrender" and "Songs That Got Away," this two-disc set would be an excellent way to acquaint themselves with it.

"Encore" is steady and well-suited for Brightman's voice, as well as having a sort of Victorian-garden air. "Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection" has the most flaws of the two -- some of the songs like "Memory" aren't suited to Brightman's voice, and she comes across as shrill and uneasy. But in songs written for her talents and "Encore," her voice alternately soars and murmurs in an airy soprano.

Sarah Brightman reached her artistic pinnacle so far in the velvety "Eden," but her stuff here is still quite beautiful. "The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection/Encore" two-pack is a satisfying look at some of Brightman's Broadway-based songs.

Yes, it's true. Sarah has nothing to do with these cds, but her voice. It's another record that Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really "not that" Useful Group release to make money. Those two cds are very good though. If you have one of them, i suggest to get the other separatly.

I was fortunate to see Muddy Waters perform in Bozeman, Montana during 1982. One More Mile sounds real and alive as if Muddy is playing right in your living room. The Lausanne tracks without drums are particularly captivating. A long album that covers a lot of territory, its excellent.

"One More Mile" gathes 41 tracks, none of which are found on the Chess Box, and most of which have never before been available on an official US release.

Much of this fine material is equal in quality to Waters' better known output, and "One More Mile" includes lots of rarities and alternates spanning the late '40s to the early '70s, with some special points of interest: the original 1955 version of "I Want To Be Loved", which was covered by the Rolling Stones on the B-side of their very first single, and 11 songs from a previously unreleased 1972 Swiss radio broadcast, showcasing Muddy performing with a drummer-less trio.

The late-40s songs on disc 1 are among the best, showing Muddy's prowess on the slide guitar. On these lean, mean renditions of "Rollin' And Tumblin' pt. 2", "Burying Ground" and "You Gonna Need My Help", Waters is accompanied only by bassist Ernest "Big" Crawford, and this raw slide playing is some of the best I've ever heard him do.
But there are plenty of other highlights on the first disc, including the swinging, band-backed "She's So Pretty" (on which Willie Dixon plays "basss", according to the liner notes), the alternate versions of "I Want To Be Loved" and "Crawlin' Kingsnake", Sonny Boy Williamson's "Elevate Me Mama", and the soulful slow "Lonesome Room Blues".

Muddy's rendition of Junior Wells' (or rather Mel London's) "Messin' With The Kid", which is called "Messin' With The Man", is actually really good as well, in spite of a silly attempt to alter the song enough to make it a "Muddy-song" rather than a Junior Wells-song.
Muddy's version of pianist Eddie Boyd's classic "Five Long Years" is not quite as good as Boyds' original, but he does a pretty decent "You Don't Have To Go" (although it doesn't sound quite right without Jimmy Reed's drawling, mush-mouth delivery).

There's also a lot of pianist Otis Spann here, which is alway a good thing, and drummer extraordinaire Fred Below is particularly great on "Oh Yeah". And "One More Mile" also includes the infamous take of "Country Boy", which features Leonard Chess pounding the bass drum. He's not all that great, though.

Disc 2 is highlighted by "Early In The Morning Blues" (a rip-off of John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson's "Early In The Morning"), the fine slow numbers "One More Mile" and "Come Back Baby", and an interesting take on Richard Jones' jazz/blues-standart "Trouble In Mind".
The awful organ playing on "Trouble, Trouble" is inexcusable, but the last eleven songs on disc 2, the acoustic trio performance, are quite interesting. Waters, second guitarist Louis Myers, and harpist George "Mojo" Buford lay down raw, stripped-down versions of "My Pencil Won't Write No More", "Rock Me", "Hoochie Coochie Man", "You Can't Lose What You Never Had", and Big Joe Williams' "Baby Please Don't Go". Most of them are very good, although the two-guitars-and-a-harmonica arrangements are a little bit monotous at times.

All in all, this is a surprisingly good addition to Muddy Waters' already magnificent legacy, and a fine purchase for Muddy-fans. Not the place to start, but a great addition to your collection once you have the essentials.

This is a Muddy compilation, spanning 1948 to '72. Contained are alternate takes, and obscure material. All of the music is on par, if not equaling/bettering Muddy's previous album cuts.

Contains a live radio broadcast from 1972 Switzerland, trio acoustic with MoJo Buford on harp and Louis Meyers on guitar. "Rock Me," "Hoochie Coochie Man," "Standin' Round Cryin'," "Baby Please Don't Go," and "Streamline Woman" are familiar tunes done in an unfamiliar atmosphere. Plus 8 or so more tunes. The sound of the acoustic trio is much more cerebral than Muddy's electric cuts.

The second track is an instrumental, "Muddy Jumps One,"(1948) featuring Ernest Crawford on bass, and Leroy Foster on second guitar. This song is pure HISTORY. This is, I believe, the first recorded Rock and Roll tune. It is not a pure blues, that is for sure. This song is the basis for my conclusion that Muddy invented Rock and Roll. Muddy was a cornerstone in Chuck Berry's trend setting band on Berry's first Chess sides, furthering my prior statement.

Other than picking up this double disker up for it's historical value only, offered are alternate versions of "Country Boy," "Rollin' Stone," "She's So Pretty," and "Tiger In Your Tank," among others. All recorded around the time that each was originally released in the '50s/'60s. These takes equal, give an enlightening perspective of, or exceed the standards set by the original album cut of each.

If you dig all things Muddy, this is a must.

Sure, no song sounds much different from the last on any Muddy Waters album. Despite this offering's forty-one tracks timing in at over two hours, it's no exception. But this is the blues. The soulful and perfervid blues from which all of rock music can be linked, performed by one of its undeniable wizards in the form of mostly unreleased jams which are stripped-down from any slick production value to a soothing, raw and undulated form that you know you can't resist even if your favorite bands are the Smiths and Sonic Youth. Recommended for listening to in a CD changer set on random, late in the evening with something good to read and something even better to drink.

This album consists entirely of "alternate takes" or tracks "not previously released". But don't let this put you off - There is nothing second rate about this album - This is Muddy Waters at his best.

Disk 1 contains tracks from 1948 to 1963. The first few songs were recorded with simple guitar and bass backing. An instrumental "Muddy Jumps One" is included. Leonard Chess pays bass drum on "Country Boy".

Later tracks, from 1954 onwards, feature the classic Muddy Waters line-up, including Little Walter, Willie Dixon, Otis Spann and Jimmy Rogers. These are all top quality. "I want to be loved" was recorded again in 1977 on Muddy's "Hard Again" album. The catchy "Tiger in Your Tank" was apparently used to advertise both petrol (Remember those "Tiger Tails" people used to hang in the front of their cars before furry dice became the thing) and breakfast cereal (Grrreat!).

Disk 2 starts with more classic Muddy Waters band recordings, then 2 songs "Trouble in Mind" and "Trouble, Trouble" which are included here without the horns that were present on the album "Muddy, Brass and Blues". The remaining 11 tracks were recorded in 1972. They feature Muddy on electric guitar, plus Louis Myers on acoustic guitar and George "Mojo" Buford on harp. Several of Muddy's well known songs are presented in this stripped down format. And they sound excellent. "Feel Like Goin' Home is a reworking of "Walkin' Blues", but Muddy's guitar is unusually tuned to a minor chord. They could have justifiably released an album containing these tracks alone.

This is an essential album for Muddy Waters fans. It covers different stages of his career, and is of top quality throughout. Great value for money.

I listen to many (re-mastered) historical recordings. Jeanette MacDonald is certainly one of my most favorite sopranos. For some reason, I haven't been able to find a decent, or even acceptable, re-mastering of her recordings.

While this one certainly contains many valuable tracks, the re-mastering is horrid. The songs sound stripped yet still maintain a great deal of distracting noise. I conjecture that the re-mastering was done simply by increasing the bass and decreasing the treble.

This is an excellent collection of the Screen Sweethearts of the 30's, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, *not* singing together, in the 40's (except for a few of Jeanette's songs).

For Jeanette, it has numbers from Up In Central Park: Carousel in the Park, It Doesn't Cost You Anything to Dream, Close as Pages in a Book, Fireman's Bride, The Big Back Yard, When You Walk in the Room. She and Robert Merrill sing these together and on their own, and very charmingly, too. There are also Love Me Tonight, Isn't It Romantic, and Beyond the Blue Horizon.

For Nelson, he sings music from The Student Prince with Rise Stevens: Golden Days, Drinking Song, Deep in my Heart Dear, Serenade (which is BEAUTIFUL!), Just We Two, and Come Boys. He also sings all the songs from Northwest Outpost - thankfully, without Ilona Massey! Also, the Willie the Whale segment from Make Mine Music is on this CD - just as it is in the movie, with the narration and everything - it's great! (The Tristan und Isolde part is not included, however - not sure what the reasoning is behind that.) He also sings a duet with Jane Powell - Why Do I Love You? from Show Boat.

I say this is a must for fans of Nelson and/or Jeanette, not to mention Rise Stevens!

I particularly enjoy "When You Walk in the Room". It's a charming little tune, with ridiculous but adorable lyrics! "Fireman's Bride" is very funny also - Jeanette barely sounds like herself!

I hope this will help others to choose this CD - it's a pity there's not a list of the titles here!

It's always a pleasure to find Nelson Eddy's wonderful voice on CD and this one has some of the harder-to-find pieces in it, including collaborations with Jane Powell and the wonderful mezzo Rise Stevens. The recording of "The Whale Who Sang at the Met" is a must for any collector as are the excellent recordings (better than on the movie) for "Northwest Outpost". The baritone singing opposite Jeanette MacDonald also has an excellent voice (though his name temporarily escapes me)

Jim Messina, ex Buffalo Springfield, Poco & Loggins & Messina in this his second solo album is certainly a step up from His first solo outing "Messina" where the pop pretensions got in the way a tad. This one is more reminiscent of his Country Rock leanings in Poco and in fact on some its a pity that some of his former bandmates weren`t helping our on Backing Vocals. It also doesn`t hurt the album`s accessibility that there seem to be one or two borrowed half riffs or half melodies. Not a criticism at all.

No this is good old fashioned driving music, not heavy on solos or strongly lyrical but pleasant none the less. As for the songs the title track is something strait out of the Poco songbook, before the next track "Meant to be Together" dips into melancholy. "I got radio" is a song whose content has been covered by artists before and since (Roger McGuinn, Back from Rio) but is lifted above the norm by a great lead guitar part at the end played by the man himself. Playin that Rock n` Roll is yep you guessed it Rock n` Roll. "The Island" sounds like he`s been talking to Paul Cotton in terms of the subject matter. "Treat her Right" could be on Glenn Frey`s "No Fun Aloud" All this is sound Messina music but wait the best is yet to come on track 7 where he suddenly remembers that he`s a class act and delivers accordingly with "We got to get back" Moody beautiful lead guitar, highlighting the mans talent in a wistful, love tune. "Big Tease" is filler but is followed by "Can`t live without you" which includes the familiar riffs I mentioned at the start. Good LA soft rock!!

If you enjoy Poco from their Ghost Town/Inamorata period or Randy Meisner`s solo work then you may well enjoy this.
