How can you call these "Hymns".......2006-08-05

Not to harp on anyone here, but it's obvious that none of you grew up in a church or environment that had a good choir. I know, a Hymn is a genre of music, but a recording of a hymn isn't one if it doesn't contain HARMONY. If they're a "choir," then why don't the tenors sing a different note than the sopranos, altos, and basses? The organist is quite good, I'll admit, but you're wasting your time if you're looking for a good recording of these beautiful songs that were COMPOSED with harmony, not unison. If they want to sing in unison like this, they need to be stripped of their "choir" status and simply be called a "group."

wonderful collection of magnificent music.......2006-01-18

Most everything on this CD is very well done. The recording environment might have been less than perfect, but that shouldn't dimish one's enjoyment very much. Most of the arrangements are very traditional, with the notable exception of Amazing Grace, which though it isn't terrible, it isn't very good either. Some songs had verses removed, which is understandable, though it was poorly done in Eternal Father, Strong to Save -- they did verse 1 ("Eternal Father"), then they skipped(!!!) verse 2 ("O Christ, the Lord") and went on to the final verses ("Holy Spirit" and "O Trinity") -- which is skipping Someone important! However, outside of that, it was excellent.

If you like sacred music, or hymns, then you'll thoroughly enjoy this CD. If you're a Christian, you should enjoy this as well, no matter your taste in music (and you might just learn to like hymns as well!). It is a well-chosen set of some of the most magnificent, God-honoring music of all time, done is a mostly very traditional manner, and it was done well.

Flawed but enjoyable.......2005-04-15

The huge size and reverberating acoustics of Washington National Cathedral make it difficult to hear any kind of live choral performance clearly, even if you're sitting in the front rows in the nave. The Cathedral Choral Society is handicapped by having to record in this acoustically mushy space, and it shows in this CD, often creating an uneven balance between the organ and the chorus as noted by other reviewers. The repertoire is well-chosen, but the quality of the arrangements is uneven. Too often, the chorus seems to be singing in unison right out of the Hymnal, like any parish church choir at an ordinary Sunday service. Certain pieces do suggest the heights which the Society is capable of attaining. But the group never achieves the splendor that the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys displays every Sunday morning. Just when the Society seems to be getting there, the conductor pulls them back. And the shrill folk arrangement of "Amazing Grace" will have you covering your ears as the sopranos shriek clumsily, confusing volume with fervor.

Hymns through the Centuries.......2002-03-18

This is not a review. I just have a question. Does "Hymns through the Centuries" contain the hymn "It is Well with my Soul?" Thanks.

A must own for classic church music lovers.......2002-02-16

I purchased this CD just based on the titles and am very glad I did. There are only two downsides to the album. First is the fact that there isn't a companion CD with 26 more hymns! Second is picky, but I do agree with another rater that the organ could have been a little louder related to the singing. Hope you enjoy listening!

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Patrick Hall is in my opinion a rare and under appreciated jewel. He is not only an amazing singer/songwriter but an extremely talented pianist. Having no professional training and just simply an ear for music, Patrick has managed to single handedly utilize his talent more than most people are able to with a lifetime of vocal coaching and lessons. Having actually grown up with Patrick I am aware that this song (which I love by the way) may sound a bit more "husky" or "rough" than his usual sound but it's something new for him and the lyrics are a true testament of his dream. He has the ability to sing any genre but I feel his real talent lies in ballads. Don't get me wrong though, the man can truly put him stamp on some Elton John Classic Rock like no-body's business. Give this artist a chance, I guarantee you wont regret it.

I admit it: my wife liked this dude when he first appeared on American Idol; I actively hated him. His version of "Come To My Window" got him canned in the first round of the Top 24 for a reason: It was forced and sounded odd coming from a male. But...WOAH! What is this? Hall turns out to be a damned fine songwriter. "One For The Ages" is a surprisingly soulful and mature composition that, musically, sounds like something Billy Joel and Elton John might have penned together.

Hall's voice, unfortunately, takes a bit of getting used to and this may turn some people away from the song before it has a chance to get stuck in your head (and it *will* get stuck in your head). His tenor voice is hard edged with near zero subtlety (at least on this track), but his range cannot be denied, and he definitely displays some soul in the second half. What I'd *really* like to hear is a treatment of this song by Idol winner Taylor Hicks; his huskier tone could really make the melody stand out.

All in all though, this will be a woefully underappreciated (if not outright ignored) release by the masses simply because it won't appear on the radar, and that's a shame. After listening to a stream of the song on Hall's website, I'm buying it. I'm not sure 5 different mixes of (what is basically) a folk-pop tune are needed, but the accompanying video is cute and professional looking, and this is independent music that, in my opinion, is well worth supporting.

Native Spanish speakers concerned about a dwindling sense of cultural heritage in their Americanized kids are most apt to be enchanted by Mariposa, the third release in former opera singer Juanita Newland Ulloa's Canta Conmigo (Sing with Me) series. Of the 17 tracks comprising Mariposa, seven represent Ulloa's mining of Latin-leaning regions from the Caribbean to Chile for traditional, remember-thy-roots material. The rest are original compositions that, for the most part, cascade gently on willing ears--those belonging to bilingual listeners or not--in Ulloa's smooth, deeply confident, and lilting Latin American style. Standouts on this album, largely a one-woman affair (Ulloa, who produced the album, plays piano and sings), include the instrumental "Para Cristina" (written for Ulloa's daughter) as well as the title track. In "Mariposa," which is delivered first in English and later in Spanish, a rainbow-winged butterfly inspires a human urge to break free from the ground-dwelling ranks. "Arrurra Mi Niño Chiquito (Sleep My Little Child)," a guitar-centered, castanet-spiked salute to old-school Latin lullabies, soothes by way of melodic lyrics--with "arrurra" as the cooing, maternal sound Spanish-speaking mothers use to calm their babies. Two brief tracks, readings of Pulitzer Prize winner Gabriela Mistral's Chilean poetry, will be lost on non-Spanish speakers, but musically this tranquil record leaves no listener behind. Beautiful CD.......2006-04-22

I was a little concerned when i got this CD only because of the singer's last name, which is not a Latino name. But I LOVE this CD. I bought it when my baby was about 1 and she is now 6. Now I still listen to it with my second child who is now 1. The music is soothing and some of the songs are really cute and new to me, while some are traditional. She has a beautiful voice and this is a gift I like to give.

Juanita Newland-Ulloa's Mariposa is a wonderful arrangement of seventeen Latin America Lullabies and melodic songs that will be deeply enjoyed by all ages of listeners, but mostly for the very little ones.
