Opening with the methodical, hard-rocking "Cinnamon Girl"--still one of the singer-songwriter's most-hollered requests in concert--Young's second solo album introduces the cockeyed harmonies and sloppy, chiming guitars of Crazy Horse. His wide swings from soft-spoken country-folk ("Round & Round [It Won't Be Long]") to menacing metal (the punch line to "Down by the River" is "I shot my baby") indicate the multiple personalities in Young's future. His second album of 1969 broadcasts a sincere passion for the peace-and-love '60s (dig the long guitar solos) but also predicts the dark introspection of "Tonight's the Night." --Steve Knopper
Customer Reviews:
sound quality not good.......2007-06-12
The sound quality did not sound as good as my old album.
a suggestion.......2007-05-30
You know what i think would be great?
If they gave this album one of those "Deluxe Edition" jobs like they've
done with so many others such as the first Weezer album and Blind Faith and on and on. Out-takes,demo's,alternate takes/mix's....it would all be catnip to the millions who love this album.
Actually, now that i think of it....if a "Deluxe Edition" job isn't possible, they could make a nice pairing of this along with the Neil and Crazy Horse at The Fillmore 1970 CD. That would be pretty deluxe!
A Classic----Everybody Knows.......2007-05-14
While sniffing around in the wine cellar, I looked into my considerable archive of music and this one, inexplicably, shuffled it's way off the shelf into my bony hands. Some people say that it's Universal Force and Enlightenment that did it. I suspect Guido from the empty bottles. In any event- it is an excellent choice.
What can one say about this album? Neil Young expanded beyond Buffalo Springfield with this one and, I think, came into his own as a considerable artist in his own right. With Crazy Horse, he examined and extended his creativity with pastoral landscapes, jagged-edged cliffs, outerworldly musings, and just plain country meets city sensibility. Not that it always makes sense, but that people is the magic of music. Interpretation is up to you, not the artist.
Even now, I am awed by the consistency Neil displays so early in his solo career. We are never relaxed, for one moment, that the sequence of songs will resemble sameness in any shape or form. It begins with "Cinnamon Girl" which, in some way, reveals the dilemma that many young people have a problem with. That is the in-between phase of being a child and adult. He wants to spend his life with her, but then again, "Ma, send me money". The need to be free but not quite there yet. This theme reveals itself in many of his tunes. It is a slow rocker but with such a memorable riff. Next up "Everybody Knows", a jumpy, sprightly groove that, again, reveals where he's at - between a dream and reality- essentially nowhere.
"Round and Round" is a slow acoustic sadness that, I feel at least, is about loss. A loss of yourself? Or perhaps someone close. "Down By the River", aside from allowing Neil to stretch his jagged lead guitar, proposes another dilemma for the astute listener. The protagonist is lead to possibilities with this woman - but is her non-compliance a reason to shoot her? Down by the River? An enigmatic song at best and I dare not ask Neil the meaning.
We then get to "The Losing End" which reveals an easy-going country groove with some electric guitars helping it along. The theme? Good ol' country heartache. A mainstay in that genre - now and always. The mood then changes, into some outerworldly, ethereal regret and deception. This song reveals a darkness of the mind, and this is brought forth so effectively with the inclusion of violins. An eerie offering, but so very different.
"Cowgirl in the Sand", I think, is one of Neil's most potent songs. It can be taken on many levels. It is hard drivin' (but, it takes on a whole new perspective if you heard him do the acoustic version). Neil pleads with her to stay in her company. But, her place of command is the desert. Desolation. And, this song tries, desperately, to make her see her worth. Neil knows she is a beauty. She feels she is "purple words on a gray background". I feel that this song is an aching plea. It also allows Neil to experiment with lead guitar breaks, gritty and rough and insistent on it's purpose. In all, a brilliant conclusion to a brilliant album.
This album (plus the next two- After the Gold Rush and Harvest) complete the superb triumvirate of Neil's early career. As we know now, he was to go on to more creative terrain. Some of it successful, some of it not so. In any event, plain and simple, he is an amazing artist and, I think, one of the greats in popular music.
This one is definitely a classic and well worth the investment.
Now - if only Guido would replenish my bottles!

an absolute rock and roll classic........2007-03-30
"tonight's the night" is my favorite neil young album. what's number two, though? "on the beach," "after the gold rush," or "everybody knows this is nowhere." hard to choose from those three great albums. might be "everybody knows..." though. such great songs. such stunning performances. "down by the river" and "cowgirl in the sand" have some of the most originally stunning guitar jams in the history of rock and roll. and the first of those two songs is simply about as haunting a piece of work as you will find in all of the rock and roll canon. "cinnamon girl," with its power chords and great melody is another classic. the whole album is just outrageously fantastic. don't miss it.
excellent early record.......2007-03-18
This is really one of Neil Young's most interesting albums. I love the two lengthy jams the most- lots of emotion in the guitar playing and the mood. "cinnamon girl" is probably overplayed, and the crunchy guitar riff never did a whole lot for me, but the title song and the rest of the album stand mighty proud as distinct tunes that will immediately take you back to the late 60's. Enjoy it. I wonder if Neil Young knew at the time that this album would still be remembered and praised nearly 40, yes that's right *40* years later.

The term country-pop doesn't quite do justice to Yearwood's sixth album for MCA: The sound is a kind of modernized countrypolitan, a wide-open, layered pop distinguished by intelligently placed strings, piano, pedal steel, and the harmonies of Kim Richey and Harry Stinson. Fans of Yearwood's more traditional-sounding early recordings will be surprised by the lushness of the ballads and the even-tempoed rockers. If the material isn't as intense as on her fine Hearts in Armor, her soprano remains honest and free from the vocal gimmicks that plague some of her contemporaries. --Roy Francis Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2006-11-14
This is Trisha's 5th studio album for MCA. She also did a wonderful Christmas album in 1994. That would bring her total to 6 albums for MCA. This album is not the best that Trisha has done. Hearts In Armor will be hard to beat. But Everybody Knows is still a great album. It keeps the fire burning as far as her career goes. My favorite song on the album is I Want To Live Again. Believe Me Baby (I Lied) and Hello, I'm Gone are very good also.
Trisha gets me everytime!!!!!!.......2004-06-16
Trisha Yearwood must be one of the best country gals since Linda Ronstadt. Her sweet but powerful tones and the ways she holds on to those beautiful notes on Everybody knows makes me melt into my loungechair while listening to this album. There are also some rockin tracks like The title track that are great for gettin' ya goin in the mornin'.......One of my favorite all time albums......A must buy for any country fan young or old......yehaa!!!! Go girl, you rock!!!!!!
Lee Rimmer, Capel, Western Australia
Trisha's voice is an instrument.......2004-04-29
I'd give this CD 4 and a half stars, but couldn't because Amazon wouldn't allow me to do that. I love most songs on Everybody Knows, but the ones I don't like aren't bad- they aren't my cup of tea. I recognize the fact Trisha Yearwood has impeccable talent and that she always picks the best songs in Nashville. The thing I like about Trisha is how she gives each song a different meaning. Every time I listen to her songs, I get something different out of it. Her songs will become classics. I also like how Trisha doesn't oversing her material like other singers around. She has a powerful voice, but knows how to use it effectively in order to convey the appropiate message. I like to call her the thinking singer because you can tell she puts a lot of thought into every note she sings. I cannot wait until she releases new material.
The greatest female country singer in the world.......2004-04-22
This is a magnificent CD, but only one of many. Trisha is the most underated female singer I know of, almost unheard of in the UK. I have had the pleasure of meeting her in person at a concert in Los Angeles and she is as lovely off stage as on, totally unaffected by her fame. All fans should push her name forward at every opportunity, the world deserves to hear more of her.
Alan Lowe. UK.
Everybody Knows about Trisha Yearwood!!.......2001-10-18
EVERYBODY KNOWS is a well-balanced CD of great songs and really great songs. There's really nothing wrong with the CD, it just isn't as strong as THINKING ABOUT YOU. The strength of the singles, "Believe Me Baby (I Lied)" and "Everybody Knows" carry the weight of the CD, as well as, "I Need You." "Little Hercules," Under The Rainbow," and "A Lover Is Forever" stand out as strong album cuts. Check out the lyrics on the insert.

County Big Band Sound.......2001-11-11
Prairie Oyster brings big band county music to life! Tight instrumetals, thoughtful lyrics and honest vocals combine to make for a truly unique style that fans of county and rock music will love. Not widely popular in the US, but award winning in Canada, P.O. should be appreciated by mainstream America as the talent that they are. Give them a try!
One of their best albums.......2001-07-05
This is a wonderful album from Canada's premier honky-tonking, rock-a-billy, country band. If you like the style of The Mavericks then you will like Prairie Oyster too. They are a truly talented band and this album has some great songs, ballads as well as up-tempo. And they do wonderfully on both styles...I love the instrumental solos throughout. And Russell deCarle has a wonderful voice. I highly recommend this album to all country lovers.

New Side of Doug Moreland.......2004-05-01
I know Doug, and although at first I was a little tentative when I found out that this was going to be a "serious" album, I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised. The "River Anthem" takes me to the Guadalupe no matter what the weather is like outside! At first, I wondered how he could top "The Beer Song" or "The Butt Song", but this album has some instant Doug classics, and if you like Texas Music, I would definitely recommend this album.

Dude.......2006-03-20
I saw these fools last night and they tottally stole the show, unfortunatley our local venue is pretty incompitent so they had to cut thier set short, but it was... AWEsome! Guys this girl (and guys)rowks, plus if you abbreviate this name it's OWL, whooo whoo!
Beyond amazing.......2006-01-16
I recently saw OWL live in Georgia and they OWNED. Selena's voice is beyond amazing the guitar, the drums, everything is just amazing. "Damage" is probably one of the best songs I've ever heard, it has great lyrics AND it's catchy. I suggest picking this CD up pronto!
Awesome album!.......2005-05-12
If you like the Modern Rock of today, you'll love this band! This album is great! I'm not sure what bands to compare One Way Letter to. I've never really heard anyone quite like them. But if I had top decribe them the music reminds me of some good Hardcore like Samian or "Old" Sunny Day Real Estate with a little Weezer in the mix at times. And the vocals remind me of Sleater Kinney or The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
My favorite song is the second one to the end. The lyrics stop at one point and I swear she's going to drop the f-bomb! I haven't felt an inneundo coming on like that since Kiss' "I Just Wanna"!
In short, they keep Rock alive in Atlanta!

Album Description
UK compilation combines two of the soul-blues artist's (not to be confused with Johnnie Taylor) albums, 'Everybody Knows About My Good Thing' (1970) and 'Open House At My House' (1973), together on one CD. 2001 release. Standard jewel case.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Stunning.......2003-06-20
What a voice Little Johnny Taylor had these two albums on one cd is his DEFINING moment! His earlier material on Galaxy is superb, but these first two albums for Ronn are full of classic soulful, bluesy, passionate tracks. The two obvious highpoints are "Everybody Knows About My Good Thing" (#9 R&B Chart) & "Open House At My House" (#16 R&B), both here in two parts. So much more, however, is included on this 22-track CD. The emotive slow ballad "How Are You Fixed For Love", the southern soul in 6/8 time "How Can A Broke Man Survive", the West Coast slow blues "It's My Fault Darling" (#41 R&B), the mid-paced blues thumper "I'll Make It Worth Your While" (#39 R&B) and the bluesy soul waltz "My Special Rose" to name a few. He may be the most underappreciated blues singer of the modern era.
Little JT With Big Voice.......2003-04-26
There Was Nothing Little About The Late Great Johnny Taylor's Voice,His Voice Was Unique!!!
I Love All Of Johnny Taylor Cd's,Such As,"A Thousand Miles Away","Last Two Dollars","Too Many Memories","Long As I Don't Have To See You","Too Late To Try To Do Right","How Will A Broke Man Survive" And So Many More Songs!!!
