One of the signature hits of the late Waylon Jennings was "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?" Well, here's Hank done Waylon's way, in previously unreleased recordings from 1985, when Jennings was in fine voice for what was obviously a labor of love. Whatever the reason that this project was shelved for two decades has nothing to do with the quality of the performances. There's a bit more fiddle and steel guitar than was common for Jennings, but many of the arrangements have a stripped-down musical intimacy, as a mournful harmonica serenades its way through "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," while "Mansion on the Hill" shows Jennings at his most tender. Among the other highlights, Jennings applies his trademark lope to "Hey Good Lookin'" and a goodtime growl to "Honky Tonkin'." A five-and-a-half-minute, spoken-word bonus track finds Jennings reminiscing about his formative musical experiences and the seminal influence of Hank Williams. --Don McLeese

This is Waylon singing Hank. It isn't his best product

5 out of 5 stars Waylon the Great.......2007-01-14

This is classic Honky Tonk Hank Williams music and Waylon does a great job on every tune. The instrumentation is fantasic and I don't know why Barney "Max" gave this CD a one star rating because all tunes sound fine on my stereo system. "Max" get another stereo!! I love this CD and I am giving every tune 5 out of 5. If you love Hank Williams music, this CD is for you. Waylon is in fine form here and I am sure Hank would be proud.

It is ok, but I didn't get sold on this album totally. He still sounds like Waylan and his beat on some of the tunes. If you like Waylan you might like this ok.

5 out of 5 stars Waylon showing his heart.......2006-10-30

This album displays a side of Waylon that lets you in his heart and really grabs hold of his gratitude for the legend Hank Williams. You can tell the album was made with sincere heart felt meaning behind it. A real fun track is "Jambalaya" that I could play over and over. The song "Be Careful of Stones That You Throw" really hit home for me and you can hear the deep reality for Waylon in this song as he sings it. Track 13 "Waylon Speaks" really tops off the album, because it unexpected and it's just like he's sitting right next to you sharing his thoughts. There were a few songs I didn't care for, but the more I listened to the album I was pulled in by the deep reality of each song and Waylon conveying those realites. He has a way of grabbing a hold of the listener and getting the message across to them.

I was pulled in by everything about this album and have told all my friends not to pass it up. These are one-of-a-kind unaltered recordings and I'm glad to have them in my Waylon collection.

1 out of 5 stars One of the greatest voices ever. One of the worst albums ever........2007-06-26

When Roy was on Monument records he was writing some of the greatest songs ever written, singing like no one else could, and recording and arranging his material with just enough instruments to create those awesome moods.(The ones Bruce Springstien said are "best listened to in the dark.") He and his producer at Monument Fred Foster, build the arrangements for those songs to showcase Roy's incredible voice. Those recordings never grow old or out of date for me and I still carry a "Best Of" in my car that gets played at least once or twice a month. I love Roy Orbison and wish he was around recording material like he was doing on "Mystery Girl" when he passed away in 1988.
There is not one song on these recent MGM albums that would fit on a "Best Of Orbison" collection. The arrangements are over blown, the background vocals are all over the place, often intrusive and Orbison sounds like a minor character on his own records. Listen to the quality of Roy's voice on a Monument record compared to an MGM record. On Monument his voice "is" the record. Big powerful and strong with alot of depth. On the MGM recordings his voice sounds thin and is mixed poorly into the overblown backgrounds. And as for song selection, Roy Orbison should not be doing a cover album of Don Gibson or Hank Williams tunes. Orbison was a class "A" songwritter. WOW. I really hate this stuff.

4 out of 5 stars The Best and Weakest of Roy's MGM Years.......2006-12-15

Don Gibson was one of the truly great country singer/songwriters. He had an unusual vocal style that is hard to explain to someone who hasn't heard him. His songwriting skills were astounding, for example I can't stop loving you, Oh Lonesome Me, Sweet Dreams etc. The master interpreter of Don Gibson had to be Roy Orbison. The 12 songs from Orbison sings Gibson are all first rate Nashville sound types of recordings. I can't understand why Oh Such A Stranger wasn't a megahit on the country charts -the arrangement is gorgeous, Orbison's vocals so emotional and heart-breaking. I love the fuzz guitar on Yes I'm Hurting. I love the country waltz Blue Blue Day, and the raucous What about me. There isn't a bad song among these 12. As for Roy sings Hank Williams, it's not as strong. There are gems such as Last night I heard you crying in your sleep but it is less inspired and the production and arrangements aren't as strong as on the Sings Don Gibson songs. Not bad, just not as excellent. At the risk of sounding repetitive, if you love Roy Orbison, buy this set because you will enjoy it. Roy was simply the greatest hands down, and there are too many wonderful songs to pass up on this collection.

4 out of 5 stars The Gospel According to Sun Records.......2003-12-05

Johnny Cash wanted to be a gospel singer, but Sam Philips told him there wasn't a market for gospel. Ultimately, Cash left Sun Records for Columbia, which allowed him to record religious music, but Cash did at least record a few gospel songs on the Sun label--all of which are included on this set.

The gospel Sun recordings are "Belshazah," one of the earliest songs from Cash's pen, and "I Was There When It Happened," a cover version. The other two "gospel" songs aren't really religious at all, though they contain the words, "Lord," "God," etc., as in "If the Good Lord's Willing," which is really a love song. So Sunday Down South is a bit of a stretch as far as gospel songs go, in terms of Cash's output.

Jerry Lee Lewis redeems the album, particularly "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Will the Circle be Unbroken." The piano is such a righteous instrument. He recorded a few more gospel tunes than did Cash.

It should be noted that Cash and Lewis didn't collaborate for this album; Philips simply brought these songs together to sell a few albums. (Lewis did play piano on a few Cash recordings, though I'm not sure he does on any of these songs.)

The second half of the disc contains other Sun releases: Cash and Lewis' covers of Hank Williams, which were released as singles, EP's and LP's in their day. These are really good.

One last note: the CD version contains piano overdubs (not by Lewis) on some of Cash's songs. The overdubs are particularly annoying and were added long after Cash left Sun Records. Some cassette and vinyl versions do not include the overdubs, but if you want these recordings as they were originally released--not as they were originally recorded--this disc is for you. Minus one star for the overdubs, though.

4 out of 5 stars Johnny Cash Sings some Hank Williams.......2007-01-05

First of all: This is a cd of an original record. There has been made a lot of compilations of Johnny Cash music, but this one is not one of theme.

That in mind it might not be so disappointing that only 6 of the 17 tracks are Hank Williams.

I have been buying Cash cd's for a decade now but recently I found out that I wanted to buy all the original recordings on CD. So I bought this cd not because of the Hank Williams theme, but because I love Johnny Cash.

Hank Williams was not an old man, but he wrote many of the best songs that has ever been written. In my opinion there are no better man to sing them then Johnny Cash.

Then there are 9 Johnny Cash tunes on here as well and many of them was not familiar to me, but I really loved them.

This is overall a great CD but not one of the best. Therefore 4 out of 5

    1 out of 5 stars A REAL DISAPPOINTMENT.......2004-12-26

If you purchase this CD with the idea that you're going to get the exact sound of Johnny Cash singing Hank Williams you remember from the original recording, you will be disappointed. Although many rave about the remastering, the cutting of the background chorus and several musicians takes a heavy toll on the nostalgic value of the music. What you now get is the voice of Johnny Cash with minimal accompaniment--all well and good if pure vocal is your desire, but not so well and good if you want the original package.

4 out of 5 stars I hate to give it only four starts, but.................2004-12-22

why the non-Hank Williams songs. Johnny did more of Hank than what is on this disc. Johnny is fabulous. Few could match the wonderful combination of Cash and Williams, but where are the rest of them? Why the heck put these other songs on there when there are more Hank Williams? I don't "get it"!!

5 out of 5 stars "Hank Williams & favorites is only the beginning ~ John Cash.......2003-09-26

Varese Records has released "Sings Hank Williams & Other Favorites", featuring Sun recordings that made Mr. Johnny Cash the legend that he is. Cash has a delivery that makes a song his own. Varese cooks up a delectable meal with all the right ingredients for enjoyable listening...and Johnny Cash is the chef in charge.

Let's get to the stand outs and highlights ~ "I LOVE YOU BECAUSE", Johnny sings this from the heart, and that's why we love him just because ~ "MEAN EYED CAT", just give your money to your honey at the general store, Cash the master storyteller tells it like it is ~ "I CAN'T HELP IT (IF I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU)", just listen to these lyrics, Johnny makes it all believeable as we think of June Carter.

The Sun Years will always be some of my personal favorites ~ this is a great beginning to survey the Johnny Cash sound that still rings true in our ears. The alternate and previously unreleased bonus tracks are a plus. Every track on this album shines, which makes it a very good value to add to your ever growing collection. A worthwhile venture is the result ~ we'll sorely miss him, but through Varese recordings we can relive and enjoy "The Man in Black" aka ~ Mr. Johnny Cash...gotta love it!

    Total Time: 39:22 on 17 Tracks ~ Varese 64642 ~ (6/17/2003)

4 out of 5 stars Fine re-working of post-Sun collection of Sun sides.......2003-07-23

When Johnny Cash bolted from Sun into the welcoming arms of Columbia, he left a good helping of unreleased material in his former label's vault. Sun's owner savvily packaged this material across several singles and albums and placed it in the market to compete (often very successfully) with Cash's newer Columbia releases. The original issue of this 1960 album was just such a collection, combining a quartet of Hank Williams covers with a helping of Cash's original songs (picking up singles that were hits shortly after Cash left Sun, such as "Straight A's in Love," for example), and a cover of Leon Payne's "I Love You Because."

Varese's first-ever CD reissue of this album takes several liberties, including, most substantially, using the undubbed masters in preference to the original chorus-dubbed tracks. One can argue as to whether Cash originally intended for the undubbed trio recordings to go out, but there's no arguing that removing the syrupy chorus (most likely charted by Jack Clement) only amplifies these tracks' true grit. Ironically, many of Williams' own recordings were similarly overdubbed after the singer's death, only to be re-released in original form in more recent times.

Williams' songs fit Cash's tic-tac rhythms to a tee, with the pining "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love With You)" and mournful "(I Heart That) Lonesome Whistle Blow" matching Cash's emotional delivery particularly well. The latter, along with "Cold Cold Heart" appear here as bonus tracks, having inexplicably been left off the original album. Additional bonuses include alternate versions of Cash's "Come Stranger" and "Wide Open Road," as well as a chorus-backed take of "I Love You Because."

Like many of the post-Sun assembly albums, this one isn't completely coherent, and duplicates key Cash tracks available in many places. But with a chance to hear the undubbed masters of the Williams' tracks, this provides compelling, new ground for domestic Cash collectors.

After a seven-year absence from the studio, country-rock "outlaw" Steve Young (writer of Waylon Jennings's "Lonesome, On'ry and Mean") has scored a spectacular return to form with this gorgeously sung, intriguingly varied collection. Young moves from knockout to knockout here, nailing his primordial mountain-music rant "East Virginia," the exclamatory protest "Worker's Song (A Handful of Earth)," and even an unearthly, slow take of Lloyd Price's classic R&B tune, "Lawdy Miss Clawdy," before turning down the flame for a heart-wrenching stroll through Merle Haggard's "Sometimes I Dream." He even gets in a little honky-tonkin' on Tom T. Hall's "The Year Clayton Delaney Died." His own ballad, "No Longer Will My Heart Be Truly Breaking," displays not only his voice--which has never sounded better--but also the eclectic, blues-folk-country songwriting style that's made him impossible to categorize but nearly puts him in a class by himself. --Robert Baird

5 out of 5 stars Another honest Steve Young release.......2003-01-18

If you like Steve Young go out and get this offering. It has real substance. Some music gives up it's joy immediately and some over a long period of time. These songs endure and only increase in their rewards. I particularly love Sometimes I dream and Backland farmerand anyone who can do Clayton Delaney and make it sound fresh has my vote.Steve is a troupadour, a wandering minstral who plies his craft with honesy and integrity. Go and see him live. He's great

4 out of 5 stars This grew on me.......2000-06-08

I've been a fan of Steve Young's, like for-EVER, honest-to-God, I first saw him at the "Young Folk" Sunday afternoon show at the Newport Folk Festival in 1969. I scoured Chicago for my first copy of the A&M record "Steve Young" (now re-issued). Got to know Steve through the years. As a young man, he was brilliant, funny and self-destructive, and terribly handsome. Now, as a not-as-young man, he is brilliant, funny, mega-creative and terribly HANDSOME.

I offer 4 stars for this review only because I've heard Steve with a-little-stronger vocal presence on past recordings, but hey, ANY musical offering from Steve Young is a gift.

These songs are Celtic in flavor and pure Young in execution. Time has not weakened that beautiful voice, or his great guitar playing, if anything, his performance has more depth now than ever.

We are just so fortunate to have Steve still recording. He remains an example of how good Americana music can be, but not in the same way as anybody else.

5 out of 5 stars you need Primal Young.......2000-05-08

Primal Young sneaks up on you. It's got a quiet, transcendant effect. Steve Young sounds like a person who has been there and back again and he's sharing some of his wisdom with us less evolved souls. These songs represent a great range in content and emotion. The single-minded rage expressed in "Worker's Song" hits you right between the eyes -- this is no hackneyed, mushy politically/socially conscious song like so many out there. "Heartbreak Girl" is a sad and poignant love song. "Jig", "Scotland Is A Land" and "Blackland Farmer" express a quiet joy, a coming into your own kind of feeling, accepting the limitations and beauty of life. Steve Young's affinity with Merle Haggard songs is evident in his interpretation of "Sometimes I Dream". He has turned this song into a new classic. It's a masterpiece (check out a similarly masterful rendition of Haggard's "Shopping For Dresses" on the Merle Haggard tribute record, "Tulare Dust"). Steve Young's wall of sound voice will pull you under and soothe you like a driving lullaby. It's powerful, lasting medicine. I have long been a fan and this recording does not disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars solid and satisfying.......2000-03-07

The years and a longtime, though ultimately triumphant, struggle with a road musician's occupational hazards have taken the edge off Steve Young's once nearly perfect voice. Still, on his best album in a long time, he sounds pretty good, and he suffers only by comparison. Primal Young, though not Seven Bridges Road (the early-70s masterpiece in whose shadow Young will forever stand), is a satisfying collection of originals, covers, and creative takes on the tradition. It starts with the Young composition "Jig," which listeners may confuse with a lost Townes Van Zandt song; at points Young's voice even sounds like the late Texas troubador's. Like much of the material to follow -- in which Young sounds like himself -- it has an appealing Celtic lilt, surprising when you consider that in many ways Young has the voice of a soul singer; yet he knows what he's doing, and he always makes it work. His slowed-down, country-blues reading of Lloyd Price's r&b hit "Lawdy Missy Clawdy" unexpectedly transforms it into something like a variant of the traditional "Corinne, Corinna." Other high points -- there are no low ones -- include Merle Haggard's "Sometimes I Dream," Frankie Miller's "Black Land Farmer," and amazing interpretations of the Appalachian songs "East Virginia" and "Little Birdie." Back in the late 1960s Young virtually invented the country-folk genre, and he shows us here that he's still among its masters.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Yount at its best........2000-02-25

All Steve Young records are touching. But this one is heart-warming, wonderful, a great album. The lyrics, combined with the music and the art of singing: everything is just how it has to be in the best case. A real singer-songwriter with an enormous talent and with a brain and a heart in his body. I really hope that all you, reading this, will buy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Larry Sparks The Greatest.......2004-05-04

Larry Sparks a friend to many an entertainer to all. One of the best if not the best. This recording of his mentor ( Hank Williams ) is just a small portion of his great talents when it comes to singing, and playing music. The most soulful bluiegrass musicians living today or thre best of any living or dead.Thank you Larry Sparks for being my friend as well as my all time favorite bluegrass entertainer......

5 out of 5 stars First time I have heard of Larry Sparks, Five stars definite.......1999-05-27

I am a devout Hank Williams Sr fan and collector. I have heard many artist attempt to sing his songs with the emotion and feelings he put into them. Larry Sparks is the closest that I have heard in quite some time. A definite 5 star recording.

5 out of 5 stars A must for both Hank Williams and Larry Sparks fans.......1999-04-24

Larry Sparks is one of the great soulful singers in bluegrass music today. He is one of the few artists that can truly convey the depth of emotion that Hank Williams put into his songs. This album features a few lesser known Hank songs and Larry performs them with his characteristic rich and bluesy guitar playing and first rate bluegrass band accompaniment. This is a wonderful album to listen to whether you're happy or sad. A real gem, and highly recommended.
