Throughout their nine-year career, Nickelback have stayed true to their roots, releasing five CDs of straight-up, unapologetic rock & roll. So how have things changed for the Canadian boys since the massive success of Silver Side Up and The Long Road? Well, brothers Chad and Mike Kroeger still live in the Great White North, and they still write hook-laden rock songs. The only difference now is that they have the satisfaction, 10 million CDs later, of smugly knowing that even some of their biggest naysayers will guiltily admit to singing along with Nickelback's catchy hits. On All the Right Reasons, one track definitely ranks high up in hum-ability: the first single, "Photograph," reminisces about the bittersweetness of high school in a small town--once again reconfirming frontman Chad Kroeger's ability to write memorable hooks. Regarding the rest of the disc: standard rock topics like love, lust, jealousy, and breakups abound, with riff-y delivery that longtime fans will love. The guilty pleasure bunch will also find what they need within the grooves, on the ballad "If Everyone Cared," the riff-heavy "Fight for All the Wrong Reasons," and the Metallica-inspired "Savin' Me." The disc's most impressive and simultaneously surreal moment, however, exists on "Side of a Bullet," a passionate revenge tale written about the killer of Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, which features one of the late Abbott's guitar solos as donated by Pantera bandmate and brother, drummer Vinnie Paul. --Denise Sheppard

Nickelback is Fantastic.......2007-07-07
Great songs, great band. I play this CD every single day and sometimes 2-3 times a day.
The Creation Of Pop-Metal.......2007-06-15
Nickelback has never failed to amaze me. Even though their newest catalog release has more of a pop essence than their previous attempts, they have managed to do something else: ride the new pop-metal wave. Pop-metal, first created by newer alternative bands such as Seether or Evanescence, has seen it's share of ups and downs. This is most definitely an up. It has amazing riffs, powerful vocals, and an arsenal of great radio tunes. Normally, I don't condone the pop revolution, but in the case of pop-metal, these guys have given it a decent name in recent years. Granted, you eventually get a little worn out by constant airplay, but it never stops me from occasionally popping this disc in my drives and just rocking out. Even the over-played "Rockstar" has it's kicks. Other than that sad attempt known as "Photograph," I can honestly say that every track on this album is worth hearing.

All the Right Reasons to listen to Nickleback.......2007-05-21
Nickleback has a great blend of traditional rock guitar energy and lyrics that mean something on this album. Whether on your ipod or in your car you can enjoy a cool mix of vocals, guitar riffs that pump you up or more soulful offerings that speak with passion. The quality of the lead singers voices and the musical skills of this group make this album one that you'll listen to over and over.
Great from beginning to end........2007-05-16
This album exceeded all expectations with great hits from beginning to end.

The Best Band on Earth....PERIOD!.......2007-07-09
It doesn't surprise me at all that this album is as incredible as it is. Musically, it is a masterpiece (and I'll be damned if the instrumental mid-section of The Dark Eternal Night isn't some of the most insane stuff ever layed down...Much respect to simply being able to remember the sequence of all the meter changes!!) I would say it is their best, but everytime they put out a new album I say that, so it's their best until their next best one is released. Dream Theater continue to impress fans and fellow musicians and deserve all the success and growth they have achieved over the past 20 years. I've been a fan since '92 and I've never been disappointed.
If you are new to Dream Theater's music, this album is a great "throw you to the wolves" introduction. Great album...a definite must own!!
Rush to buy this album!.......2007-07-09
This album has a new producer in some songs they sound more like Rush who the producer also produces. The singers (James) voice isn't as dynamic as previous albums. Love the album but sound isn't as good as previous albums the new producer has taken away the dynamic features that I loved in this band, strong vocals, sort of blended all of the instruments into a flat sound. I know this band sounds much better in person. Nothing wrong with the bands part just the production.
Progressive Theater at it's best.......2007-07-08
This new effort from Dream Theater is easily their most balanced album since A Change Of Seasons. I noticed most of the reviewers here are being a little too picky on some of the songs or absolutely have no clue what the story is about. This is just one fan's take, but this is one hell of an album.
1. In The Presence Of Enemies (Part 1) is a 9 minute epic. The lead-in to the song is killer and it's the perfect teaser for the even more epic second part.
2. Forsaken has a nice intro from Ruddess, my only mini complaint is that James LaBrie sings the song a tad too slow. Still, a very sold track.
3. Constant Motion has a really cool vibe with Portnoy's double bass runs in sync with Petrucci's strong riffing. Yes, Portnoy's vocal abilities is a little rough but it compliments this song so well with LaBrie's highs.
4. The Dark Eternal Night reminds me of 'Honor Thy Father' from Train Of Thought. It's just really cool, fast, and strong aggressive vocals. Jordan has a little fun during the mini breaks of this song too.
5. Repentance is the most cerebral song this band has ever done. To those who dont understand the concept, listen to 'The Glass Prison' from Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, then 'This Dying Soul' from TOT, and 'The Root Of All Evil' from Octavarium. To the one that said there were vocal samples, it's all spoken word from the likes of Steve Vai, Satch, Chris Jericho, Jon Anderson, and Neal Morse to name a few. A beautiful and emotional song from beginning to end.
6. Prophets Of War gets right to the point with a very good sounding vocal from LaBrie telling his story of war's greed and senseless killing of innocent people. Listen close and you'll hear 100 people in chorus making this song even more personal on some levels.
7. Ministry Of Lost Souls is a Dream Theater classic. It has the speed playing, the slower balladry (especially in the beginning) and the tight vocals. A sweet piece of music nearly 15 minutes in length.
8. In The Presence Of Enemies (Part 2) closes out this epic album with a very dark story of the Dark Master. This 16 and a half minute journey takes the listener to his/her deepest darkest past selling their soul to the Dark Master only to ask for it back. What a way to close out an album.
Return of the Kings of Prog Metal.......2007-07-08
June was a fantastic month for progressive metal. Symphony X, Kamelot, and Dream Theater all released new albums - in fact the same day for Dream Theater and Kamelot. (Competition?) All three releases are very strong, but Systematic Chaos by Dream Theater shows that they are still the kings of progressive metal. As I have stated before, I only write 5-star reviews, since I can't be bothered to write reviews for anything less. With this philosophy, I didn't write a review for Octavarium, which was good but not great. There was nothing on Octavarium that struck me - plenty of prog maybe, but not enough metal.
Systematic Chaos isn't quite as heavy as Train of Thought (is anything?), but it certainly is heavy. The only song not loaded with crunch is "Repentance", which has a great Pink Floyd feel and is probably the best of the 12 step songs. "Repentance" has some beautiful backing guitar and a super solo by John Petrucci. The album is overall rather dark. While not a concept album, a number of the songs have lyrics reminiscent of 1950s horror flicks. "Constant Motion" is well titled with nothing but pure energy and makes great use of distorted vocals. Heavy riffs fill "The Dark Eternal Night" from front to back. The ending, in particular, is exceptionally mean with Petrucci crunching away at the bottom and Rudess going absolutely nuts on top with the continuum - prog metal heaven! For me, Jordan Rudess does help set DT apart. Most keyboard players add atmosphere or the lighter touches. Rudess can do this as well, but he can rip it up as nastily as Petrucci, which is as nasty as it gets. (They remind me of Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore dueling it out at solo time.) "Forsaken" and "Prophets of War" are short, heavy, and very catchy. "Prophets of War" has some Queen-like backing vocals and calls for a change in administration of the US presidency, which I certainly support. "The Ministry of Lost Souls" is the lyrical standout with a poignant story of successful rescue for the victim while the hero loses his life. "In The Presence of Enemies" is the epic piece, beginning and ending the album in grandiose but dark style.
Just when I was concerned that Dream Theater was possibly losing their edge, they come back with a bolt of lightning. I can't wait to see them on tour. VIP ticket for Cleveland!
If you liked Train of Thought, this is your album.......2007-07-08
DT fan since their early beginnings as Majesty. Have all the albums, seen most of the tours, have all the live DVD's. Learned most of the Petrucci licks, at least the ones acessible to mere mortals. This album crushes, lots of technical stuff, and heavy at the same time. My jury is still out on Prophets of War, I'm hoping it's more of an issue awareness kind of song like the stem cell research song on Six Degrees, and not just some moveon.org type Dixie Chix baloney. Otherwise great over all, especially the two part intro/outro track, and the "monster" themed songs, Forsaken and Dark Eternal Night. aka NADS.
Anyway, there's usually two kinds of people, DT fans and non-DT fans, and if you're a fan you'll like it, if you're not, you won't. But if you're not into DT yet, my best analogy would be that if you liked Rust in Peace by Megadeth, this is where to try to get into the Dream Theater.

Nearly 25 years after its formation, Megadeth is making its most brilliant work, a feat that some acts find unthinkable--maybe impossible--after half that time. When Mustaine sings about politics it's never in the abstract, faraway sense; his lyrics are riddled with references to the here and now--the boundaries and bombs that make the threat of war--or the threat of doom-- real. So it's no real surprise that this release features lyrics liberally peppered with references to Afghanistan, 9/11, NATO and the like.
Of course, no one buys a record or a ticket to a show specifically to hear five-minute polemics and that's where Mustaine's real talent--a talent for creating ear-perking riffs and solid, carefully constructed songs--comes in. The album may require that you read the newspaper on a regular basis but it also allows you to let loose with abandon and excitement. "Never Alone... a Call to Arms," "Gears of War" and "Play for Blood" are remarkable because they recall the classic metal of Judas Priest, Diamond Head, and the like and prove that there's nothing quite like an overdriven boogie-based riff to excite the most primitive impulses in the listener. Mustaine makes a bid for commercial radio by revisiting Youthanasia's "A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free)" with Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia. It's his most emotionally honest vocal performance to date and one that will no doubt finally earn him wider critical recognition. --Jedd Beaudoin

Finally a Album that provokes some thought!.......2007-07-10
In a world of fabricated reality based TV artist and cookie monster metal bands Megadeth answers the call!
United Abominations is thought provoking like only Dave Mustaine can invoke with intelligent lyrics of the current state of the U.N. and the world as a whole and with shredding metal riffs, guitar solos's and musicianship,I haven't heard for lord knows how long!
Dave has resurrected Megadeth with a new line up that is sounding tighter than ever before.
When Dave made his last move with the lineup and signed James Lomenzo to play bass was icing on the cake this band shreds!
I look for big things down the road for this latest version of Megadeth it is refreshing to see them back in the game and at the top of their game!
For all us droogies life couldn't get any sweeter.
United in Boredom .......2007-07-10
I have nothing against politics in music. Even with many of Dave's opinions contradicting many of mine, and some of them even seeming outright confusing, it should have no bearing on the music. In fact, some great bands have mixed a satirical or political message in the music, examples are everyone from The Dead Kennedy's to Frank Zappa to Queensryche to the Beatles.
Theres also nothing wrong with his being Christian. Many of the greatest metal artists of all time are or were.
However, in those previously mentioned examples, the politics and message are broadcast in such a way that it doesn't interfere with the great music those bands made.
Contrasting this are bands like Ratm, the messsage getting whiny and tiresome at times, and the new Megadeth is another band that seems to have not learned the lesson of putting politics in music the right way, at least this time around. Some of these songs vocals are so annoying, that I almost had to turn off the album in the middle of listening to it.
Enough about politics though. On to the music. This album is truly a letdown from The System Has Failed. It seems like that album highlighted Chris Poland, and even the "session players" like Vince Colaiuta seemed to bring that album up a notch. Also, the songwriting was sharp, and on THAT album Dave seemed to play with a passion that hadn't been seen since Rust in Peace or Countdown.
However on this album, many of the songs recycle riffs from one another, the sterile production and mechanical sounding drums (not to mention bland leads) make it seem like it could have been recorded by anyone (and I thought that Dave + The Drovers and others= A real band now?)
Overall it was a horrible disappointment. I don't think Dave + Co are done with playing good shows or being a good band, but this album was a real letdown. I was very bored throughout.
Metal Album of the Year.......2007-07-02
Let me start off with I havent been excited for a release of a cd in quite a while. But I could not sleep the night before this cd came out.
Woke up very early and went to get this.
The opening Sleepwalkers: was the first to be blasted in the car on the way home from the purchase The riffs in that song are amazing and very skilled yet catchy. Catchy and difficult riffs thats hard to come by
Washington is Next: Probably my second favorite on this cd this is a great track again with insane riffs. Great lyrics
Never Walk Alone... A Call To Arms the catchyest track on the cd other than ATLM the chorus is what gets ya
United Abominations: in my opinion the best track on the cd. Lyric wise I would say it defintly is Dave taking shots at the world and political idiots controlling the world, and agianst the UN, what is that any way ? Song is very inspirational and gets you pumped up. "The UN is right they cant be any more UN than they are right now ... " LMAO great line Kind of makes you wonder if our allies are really our allies !!!
Gears of War: great track another political stance
Blessed our the dead: Apocalypse
Play for Blood: catchy not one of my favorites but good non the less
ATLM (Set ME Free) A faster pace than the original released on Youthanasia released in 1994 with the added vocals , this makes a great and suprising track on the cd
Amerikastan; another favorite of mine some great riffs in hear
You'Re Dead: good track not a favorite of mine however
Burnt Ice: another solid track
The Drover bro's are a really great edition to this cd. lets hope that they last and Dave doesnt get sick of his cast again
This better win Metal album of the year
Best since 'Rust in Peace'.......2007-07-02
Very Good Album! Best Megadeth album since Rust in Peace. The band seems to be changing direction again...this time for the better...going back to their earlier 'thrashy' days. They've been known as a 'thrash' band since the beginning, but I've heard little thrashing since Rust in Peace....up until now. This album is quite thrashy. And I like thrashy. Ok, I'm gonna give the word thrasy a rest and move on. The solos on this album are great. Again, they sound similar to the quality of Rust in Peace solos. This album just has a more intricate feel to it unlike many of their last albums. Production wise the album is very good...not great...but very good. The drums sound a little weak. I like a kick drum with a little more 'umph/low end.' The snare has a boring sound to it. The guitar sound is very traditional and common sounding. Which is ok, but I do tend to prefer more unique guitar sounds. The vocals sound pretty good. I don't like that A Tout le Monte (whatever it's called) was included on this album and is totally out of place and makes me want to take a sharp object and scratch directly on the CD where that track is. Once again, Mustaine has a problem of talking too much over the music (instead of singing) - Track 4 intro. Track 9 intro. Track 9 middle part, etc. He reminds me of a pop radio DJ talking right up until the singing starts. But, that's the only criticism I'm gonna dish out for now. I'm just really glad to see Mustaine writing music once again that he was born to write. Fast, energetic and THRASHY!
Dave is still true to himself and his fans........2007-07-01
2nd disc since Dave Ellefson left the band and Mr. Mustaine seems to want to back in time musically and blend it with it with bits of the present. And I like it!! I also like Dave E's F5 project although it sounds a lot like Sevendust but that's OK cause I like them too. It cracks me up to read the hater reviews. If you're a true Megadeth fan you roll with the changes in their music. At least their not turning their hat sideways and screaming Yo , Yo , Yo , Look At Me! Instead they're still giving you rocking tunes with scorching solos. Do you get that from Lympsync Bizketstreet Boys or Puddle Of Poop? The fact is that eventhough being pushed aside by the crap that MTV has the kiddies buying the Metal bands from the 80's and 90's are still bringing it!

Dream Theater has built a career on delivering some of the most consistently strong progressive rock albums in history and Systemic Chaos proves no exception. Built upon the trademark musically diverse but stylistically reliable principles that made albums such as Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Train of Thought instant classics, this album features new career highs such as "Prophets of War," "Forsake," and "Constant Motion." Although the band has flirted with commercially viable material in the past, especially on 2005's solid and exciting Octavarium, Systemic Chaos proves unrelenting in its pursuit of pure heavy rock. There are plenty of surprises in store, even for stalwart fans, perhaps one of the reasons that Dream Theater remains in a class by itself, ahead of the pack and ahead of the times. A truly outstanding album by any measure.--Jedd Beaudoin

Jump the shark?.......2007-07-10
Well, having been a fan of DT since Awake, I must say that this album is a huge disappointment. DT reached their zenith with Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory. I've gotten used to most everything they doing seeming fairly average since then. This album, on the other hand, is half noise and half interesting but unrelated tracks. They demonstrated their ability to do a fairly pure heavy album with Train of Thought, which was a pretty good album. I'm not sure what they're trying to prove with this album. I would not be surprised to see James and/or Jordan leave prior to the next album, and I think we'll look back at DT in 10 years and identify this album as the point in time where they jumped the shark.
Their best in a long, long, time...........2007-07-10
This album blows away Octavarium . That wasn't a bad release (in fact, I liked it quite a bit) but it was by far their worst release. It was obvious that they were running on steam. It was heavy, progressive, but it pretty uninspired in places.
Looking at dozens of reviews on all the Theater releases, it is very clear that Dream Theater fans are pretty wishy washy and don't support their band very well. They should be ashamed and dream theater should be embarrassed to have such stupid fans. I can understand hating a band if they truly sink rock bottom but Dream Theater is too tight of a band to alienate such a huge fan base on their own. Quite simply, their fans have their own delusions of this band and ruined the band only for themselves.
I first got into Dream Theater when Six Degress came out. I bought it on a whim and never even heard one note from the band before. I loved every minute (well, mostly) of both discs and fell in love with the band and immediately went back and delved into their past and then bought this one and the previous two albums (also the live dvds and the live albums) when they came out.
What makes this album was so good is the fact that they finally found the balance between heavy and progressive metal. Train Of Thought was waaaay too heavy for them and octavarium experimented in all the wrong ways. With this epic release, they get it right. How so? By mixing the two styles but never together. When the parts are heavy then it's heavy with nothing else. When they are melodic and moving, then it's melodic and moving. They don't try to do it at the same time in the same song; just do it at different times in the same song.
It works rather well, I think.
Some of Petrucci's most frantic fret work is displayed on here: sometimes it's downright pure thrash. Clearly, this album is for Petrucci to shine which makes sense because the last album was for James and the keyboardist (forgot his name..)
Although, I wouldn't say Mike's drumming is as...deep and in depth..as usual, it's no less intricate and spot on. He pounds the double bass drums extremely fast and hard in places and it makes you set back and realize that he can be aggressive on the kit when he needs to be.
James' vocals are still hit and miss for me. As always, when he does it right, he shines. But when he's bad, he is very bad. At any rate, he doesn't do too bad of a job. Myung's bass and Jordan's keyboards are still spot on. I have nothing to say about these instruments and that isn't an insult. It simply states that they are very consistent and I have nothing to add to them or their performances within the band in anyway.
Background vocals/extra vocals from everyone that is not James: A lot of fans complain about them but I think they sound cool. They certainly fit the feel sometimes, especially on Dark Eternal Night. That song sounds sinister and has become one of my favorite DT songs.
All in all, it's their best album since Six Degrees. Adding to this, I don't think it's as good as classic such as the already mentioned six degrees, awake, or images and words but I do think it holds on with scenes from a memory, which I feel is one of the most overrated albums of all time. Please, Dream Theater fans, don't email hate because I just said that. I don't care about your opinion.
dissapointed.......2007-07-10
Being a long time fan, and after not really liking Octavarium very much, I wasn't sure what to expect. After the first couple of minutes I thought this album would be reaaly cool. After that they lost me. The songs just didn't grab me. Don't get me wrong, there is nobody better when it comes to musicianship, but the songs just aren't that good. Here and there I would here something really cool and after a couple of bars it was gone, never to be heard again. Hope I like the next offering. I used to just buy Dream Theater albums because I knew they would be great. After the last two I will be listening to the samples first.
What Happened?.......2007-07-08
Basically you can sum up DT's career in 2 phases., pre and post Scenes From a Memory... It seemed like right after Metropolis 2 DT became heavier and heavier and seemed to lose their happiness.. Every album since this has less and less 'pep' and 'bounciness'... yet I keep buying their albums hoping that they will reinvent themselves again... gone are the days of the DT tight guitars (listen to this album compared to LTE 2 and Awake and you will know what I mean), great hooks, and even any recognizable song structure....
I have listened to this album about 4x since I purchased it, and it just doesn't get me feeling as I did way back in the day.. I actually figured it out., somehow it sounds like Lamb of God w/ keyboards and someone that sings...
I'm sorry DT, I had such high hopes.
Boy am I in trouble..........2007-07-05
I was pumped to learn that the day before my wedding the 11th of August, Dream Theater was going to be performing in Chicago. Before the CD arrived at my home, I purchased tickets for all 5 of my groomsmen, my father, and myself to see the show in Chicago the 10th of August. Now, after listening to the CD, I think I am in a real pinch, especially after telling all the groomsmen how GREAT Dream Theater is. I have seen them twice before. Once in Indiana at the Gigantour, and once in Chicago for their anniversary tour. Needless to say, the Indiana show was amazing and the Chicago show was pitiful at best. Knowing that 70% of the show coming up in August will be material from this disc, I fear that I have just wasted $450. There is no creativity here. There is now flow. "Constant Motion" and "Forsaken" both sound like something NICKLEBACK could have written!!! Where are the feel-good times of Six Degrees? Here I was thinking that Octavarium was a bad album... I'd listen to that CD 1000 times over hearing this piece of trash again. I'm disappointed. I'm disgusted. I want my money back. I am sick of having to jump 1/2 way through DT's songs just to find some real music. I think I'll just stick to Porcupine Tree and Symphony X from now on.

It's never easy following up a multi-platinum success, but Canada's Nickelback's latest seem sure to match the sales of the many-million-selling Silver Side Up. The formula remains pretty much the same--nothing fancy, just radio-friendly grunge that lends an appropriately dramatic backing to the powerful and increasingly confident voice of Chad Kroeger. Aside from the fast and punchy opener "Flat on the Floor," the tough, staccato "Because of You," and the Oasis-like "Figured You Out," the band deal exclusively in soft-rock anthems (soft, that is, by 2003's pulverizing standards). The only real change here lies is in Kroeger's lyrical concerns. Where 2000's The State found him suffering the frustrations of small-town life, now he's tortured by a heavy touring schedule that promotes destructive drug abuse and strains relationships to breaking point. That said, you can't help feeling the ruthlessly analytical Kroeger would turn a visit to the supermarket into a riot of hatred and self-recrimination. For fans of Silver Side Up, Nickelback have delivered the goods once more. --Dominic Wills

Figured You Out.......2007-07-06
I just heard the song "Figured you out" last week - June of 07'. I was flipping around on my car radio, and stopped on this song cause it totally rocked! But, once I payed attention to the lyrics, I was appalled they were playiing this song at 1pm in the afternoon! This song is degrading to women - it promotes sexual violence and applauds a female who is submissive and has low self esteem. How can we as a society say it's okay for radio stations to play a song like this, especially during hours most children could be listening. Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed in Nickelback for writing this song - as well as the new song "Rockstar". Shame on you guys. You may not have asked to be role models, but you are now. Show some integrity and live up to it.
Amazing!.......2007-06-03
This is by far the best Nickelback Cd ever produced. The are three songs that really stick out to me.
1-Do This Anymore
2-See You At The Show
3-Because of You
Overall, this is a must have!
Solid effort, through and through.......2006-06-26
Nickelback follows up Silver Side Up with another catchy, angst-driven grunge disc. What's good is that the lyrical content is more varied with this effort. The one downer: "Someday" sounds virtually identical to "How you Remind Me" (tempo, guitars, drum parts, everything ... there's even a mash-up avaiable online where the two songs are played simultaneously and you really notice the similarities).
Other than that, there are songs dealing with social matters "Believe it or not", "Throw Yourself Away", Chad Kroeger's personal relationship demons "Do This Anymore", "Someday", to mention a few, and songs that are just plain fun to rock out to "Because of You", "Flat on the Floor".
This album is pure grunge with a commercial twist that gives it an almost universal appeal. No, it will not appeal to music purists, nor will it appeal to fans of softer music, but it will to a lot of other people.
That, and the fact that it is a little more varied lyrically than Silver Side Up, and you have a winner.
Are you that dumb?.......2006-06-16
Whoever said this album isn't even worth a penny is the dumbest person ever. He (or she) asked a very stupid question. Where did the 90's go? There still back in the 90's! Every generation has it's own kind of music. Do you expect to hear Elvis on the popular radio stations anytime soon? No, because he is in the past and new music has come out. The 90's are called the 90's because they were played in the 90's! New music is and will forever be coming out and if your stuck in the 90's then don't turn on the damn radio because most of the stations will be playing music like this. So shut up about your favorite music because nobody cares what it is.
What a load of dung...........2006-04-17
When I first heard Nickelback about 7 or 8 years ago (The State), I thought they were decent, nothing great, but decent. I still think The State is an OK disc. But like most bands, once they sell out and find fame, the quality of the product goes down the tubes. Besides being musically bland, and never changing...the lyrics are just about as deep as a rain puddle after a drizzle. "Figured you out" has to be the worst...any 8th grade dropout could write that, its just plain dumb, as well as vulgar.

Following Staind's footsteps, Nickelback make the personal public and vent a history of frustration and resentment to melodic hard rock. The band's second album, Silver Side Up, starts with "Never Again," an angry tirade against domestic violence that sheds light on the issue without too much sap or sentiment. The album's catchy radio hit "How You Remind Me" and the song "Woke Up This Morning" tell of rotting relationships, while other tracks touch on damaged hope and lost dreams. The post-grunge, alt-metal combo backing these songs packs as strong a punch as the lyrical material, going hard with lots of hooks. The additional slide guitar on "Hangnail" and sludgy, alt-metal riffs on "Hollywood," "Money Bought," and "Where Do I Hide" add a little meat to the alt-rock bones on Silver, elevating Nickelback above the heap of copycat rockers clogging the airwaves. --Jennifer Maerz
Customer Reviews:
Nickelback's best album!.......2007-07-06
After getting "All the Right Reasons" I got all of Nickelback's older albums. While all are very good, I like this one the best. It has a grungy, hard-rock edge to it that I like and all of the songs on this album are very good!
The songs that stand out on this album are "Never Again", "Too Bad", "Just For", "Woke Up This Morning", "Money Bought" and "Good Times Gone". I do not like "How You Remind Me" too much because of all of the radio airplay it got when the song became popular. In my view, the overplay on the radio killed "How You Remind Me".
While I understand the frustration of many who say that Nickelback "sold out" because they decided to go more mainstream. However, I think they were developing their sound like many other bands do and see no difference between Nickelback's sound development and Soundgarden's doing the same thing.
While Soundgarden is, by far, a superior band (I have all of their CDs too), I can appreciate Nickelback's approach since they obviously have to balance making music and selling albums in order to make a living.
I think down the line Nickelback can "return to their roots" and crank out an album just as good as this one. It worked for The Scorpions and Pearl Jam and I think it can happen for these guys too.
Silver Side Up.......2007-05-06
This is the only Nickleback CD that is a must have.
It is Great!
lukey2be_free.......2007-05-02
Nickel Back has done it again, with their album Silver Side Up, another great hit. Their song "How You Remind Me" was nominated for record of the yearat the 2003 Grammy Awards. "Never Again" is a discription of demestic violence. Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake(vocals, guitar); Mike Kroeger (bass); Ryan "Nik" Vikedal (drums)make this band ROCK!!! Silver Side Up is an awesome follow up to The State ending with the taken acustic-meets-electric track of "Good Times Gone"
Excellent CD.......2007-01-10
I've listened to this CD over and over again. Every song is excellent! It is rare to find a CD where every song is great. This CD is a rare find!
Solid rocker with a message.......2006-11-06
Recently started listening to Nickelback. Great songs with messages behind each song about the problems affecting our society today. From drug and alcohol abuse to domestic voilence to cheating these songs cover issues that matter and are sung with emotion and feeling. Two of the best songs are "Too Bad" about a father and son relationship that goes sour and "Hangnail" about a breakup between a couple. "How You Remind Me" and the song "Woke Up This Morning" tell about other bad relationships. Other songs talk about broken hope and lost dreams.

Album Description
Vancouver's 3 Inches of Blood unleash Fire Up The Blades, the sophomore release from the dual vocalist group. Recording with several band members for the first time, Fire Up The Blades truly realizes the band's full potential with lightning fast guitar work, galloping drums and over the top vocals. Produced by Joey Jordison (of Slipknot) and mixed by Zeuss (Shadows Fall), Fire Up the Blades sees 3 Inches of Blood taking the sounds of their 80s metal influences to new extremes to create a signature sound all their own. Evidence of the band's influences can also be found in much of the subject matter of the music which features many lyrics and song titles rooted in the world of fantasy. 3 Inches of Blood have skillfully built upon the foundations laid with their debut album, Advance and Vanquish, to produce a groundbreaking effort. A fast and technical album, Fire Up The Blades redefines the boundaries of hard music with songs like "Night Marauders," "The Goatriders Horde," "Forest King" and more.

3 Inches is a little short of the real amount of blood this one holds!!.......2007-07-04
wow 3 inches of blood have literally turned the page on their music. People like traditional metal, you can come up with anything and even if its the same thing we love banging our heads to it. 3 inches on their last album stayed too focused on a style that many still like but has not quite grown to our generation. these are awsome screwed up canadian guys that i met in montreal...they are nice....and its good too know that there not just some wannabe punks wen u listen to their music!!!!!!
This album is unbelievable.......2007-06-30
I didn't think they would be able to top Advance and Vanquish.... but they did. A&V was probably one of the best metal albums of all time.... THIS IS THE GREATEST!!!!!! I have pretty much stopped listening to other bands since this album came out. I used to love Maiden / Priest etc.... I don't even bother with them anymore. This is truly all I need.
Hands down... This is the best metal album of all time.
DAMN!!!.......2007-06-28
This is probably one of the best albums ive heard in a while(after Horse The Bands "A Natural Death"). I saw 3 Inches live last year and i thought their music at the time could not be out done but for once i was wrong and im happy for that, because this album went above and beyond any of my expectations. I talked to the lead singers and they said it was due summer of 07 and anxiously i waited and once i got it it was well worth the wait. And on top of it they added akeyboardist to the mix... f***king awesome.
On the way to the top........2007-06-26
Awesome album! Very well produced and the band plays to their strength's. I picked this band a couple years ago to hit it big and i was right. A mix of thrash, death, hardcore and power metal.

Hail The Kings Of Metal!.......2007-06-27
they are back, and it is frikkin awesome! they had their first album, which was great but has been said to be a bit rough around the edges, then their second "sophmore" release, which many bands sometime rise and fall by, and DD clearly progressed and refined their sound, and now we are brought to their third album. the first thing that struck me that there was a definite progression in their music, but yet still retains the same aggression and edge you'd expect from their previous release. as Fury was more polished then their first album, Last Kind Words is still more refined, better riffs, better arrangement, while still grabbing you by the back of the head and slamming your cranium into the wall.
Even Dez's trademark "cookie monster" vocals (which i hate using that term, but don't know how else to describe it) is even further developed on this album.
If you are a DevilDriver fan..........then you're probably not even reading this and already have it...........
if you are a metal fan, this is the epitome of the current state of metal done at its finest.
the best analogy i can give to this album is looking at Metallica's first 3 studio releases, same feeling, same sound, just kept getting better and better.
hands down, a must buy, period

The Dresden Dolls - LOVE 'EM!!.......2007-01-27
I don't usually like music with voices and words; I much prefer to listen to instrumentals and not have to concentrate on anything but the tune itself; words usually just get in the way of a good listening experience. *However*, all that changed as I was driving home from work the other afternoon, listening to a segment on NPR devoted to how up-and-coming bands have to spend so much time marketing themselves and paying out money to do so, that they don't have as much valuable time to devote to their songwriting as they would like or need. They spotlighted The Dresden Dolls and played excerpts. And I love them! I love the songs! The edginess, the words, the melody, Amanda Palmer's piano and voice (which by the way, can be soft & sweet or totally in your face). There's only 2 of them: Amanda Palmer on piano and Brian Viglione on drums - add the words and melody, and that's all you need for a great band! This particular CD has two of my favorites on it: "Missed Me" and "Coin-Operated Boy". Now I find myself singing along to the songs whenever I play them in the car (when did I start doing that??). I'll be buying all their other CDs, and singing along to them as well!
Dresden Dolls.......2007-01-12
The album has a few really good tracks, but overall it could use more variety.
wow this band rocks .......2007-01-12
do you ever get bored with bands sounding the same or the tired old crappy radio. you must pick up this cd. you will not dissapointed. I was surfing roadrunner records for some songs, i happen to stumble apond d.d. and i loved them from the start cause to me i never heard such type of music. im used ot bands like slipknot, rage against the machine, hatebread, audioslave, lamb of god, Crisis, ect. the best song has to coin operated boy.
I'm Not Sadistic!.......2006-09-20
Hello all. This review is to help you decide whether or not you want this album, right? Well. i have to tell you, you're stupid if you don't buy it. but apparently. you need more than just an insult to convince you. so....On with the show. I'll rate the songs by tracks. But First, what you have to realize about the Dresden Dolls, is that their is only 2 members. Amanda is piano/keyboard/toy piano/Vox, and Brian is percussion/drums/guitar/vox. Their sound is VERY UNIQUE, there is no other sound like them. It's a mix of Punk/Cabaret/Rock. Now, you may think that if it's only got a keyboard and drums, then it can't be rock. it can't be viscious, it can't be head-bangingly beautiful. You're wrong.
1. Good Day-4.5/5-Starts slow, but gets into it halfway through.Catchy chorus. Great opener track to ease you in to what they call "Punk Cabaret"!
2. Girl Anachronism-5/5-My favorite track on this album, hands down. The lyrics alone are incredible. but the dueling piano and drums gets to be too much to handle, it's that good. I find myself singing it at work, and i head-bang during the first minute while driving. Kinda hard to do, but...
3.Missed Me-4.0/5-A Great song about pedophilism. It plays like a musical song. Reminds you of cabaret, but viscious. A Truly great song.Catchy tune.
4.Half Jack-5/5-This is another favorite on the album. It starts out kinda slow like "Good Day" but then gets powerful later on. Lyrics are beautifully connected to one another.
5. 672-3/5-Its a 1 1/2 minute intermission. It has few lyrics, but good piano. I'd listen to it just to get to Coin-Operated Boy.
6. Coin-Operated Boy-4.5/5-The song is about a girl who wants a coin-operated boy, to "play" with. So she won't be alone. it's romantic really. It was the first song i heard by the Dolls. It gets sorta old after you hear it a zillion times.
7. Gravity-5/5-Another great track. Great lyrics. AWESOME CHORUS! I see myself cruisin on the countryside, hand out the window. just chillin' with this song. A+
8. Bad Habit-4.5/5-Fast paced and great. One of the better songs on this album.
9. Perfect Fit-4.5/5-This is the one of those songs you skip because it's slow, but later realize, it's truly an important part of the album. You want to scream the lyrics at the end. Very catchy.
10. Jeep Song-4.5/5-This song is hilarious. It's a nearly 5-minute song about how all she sees are Jeep Cherokees in town. How she'll "skip Town till the cars go out of style". It's very funny, and great instrumental accompanyment.
11. Slide-5/5-This song is the CREEPIEST thing i've ever heard. It's about this orange man,(maybe an escaped convict?or...*correct me if i'm wrong) who's going to kidnap a "red little girl" from a slide. At the very end when she's screams "The Orange Man's Got You!" I freaked out (i'm driving by the way), and got a little disoriented, because it sent chills all over my body. Pedophilism. Only Dresden can do a song, and make it stick.
12. Truce-3.5/5-This is the 9-minute epic on the album, and the last track. It's tune you can't get into for very long as it changes constantly. But the Violin solo at the end is mind-blowing. "You can fake it for the papers, but i'm on to you, i'm on to you!"
And then when you thought it was over you hear Amanda's mother or grandmother i'm guessing. "Amanda...You're telling me a fairytale."
Then that's it. A Great Album! Listen to the samples on Amazon. They really do help. Rate MY REVIEW! It's mY FIRST!
And no one cares if your back is bleeding.......2006-08-18
My introduction to The Dresden Dolls came in the form of Yes, Virginia... That CD blew me away and I expected nothing less from this, their self titled release. This CD doesn't pack as hard of a punch as Virginia does but it's there, and it's as swift as can be. The lyrics aren't as controversial and comical as they are on Virginia, yet there's still room for controversy with Missed Me and Coin-Operated Boy. The one thing that is completely the same as Virginia is the fact that Amanda and Brian sound amazing playing off of each other, and Amanda's vocal adventures from song to song are fascinating to listen to.
Beginning this CD with Good Day was by far the best choice. After a slow and quiet intro Amanda churns out the eery sounding lyric "So, you don't wanna hear about my good song?" From then on this CD is just one big rollercoaster ride. Driving piano/drum combos, soft piano laced songs, mid tempo sing alongs, everything is here. But that doesn't mean everyone will love this release, and The Dresden Dolls for that matter. This band is over the top a lot of the time, and I think that's what they go for. So if you can't deal with that then don't even bother.
The Dresden Dolls (CD, not the band) is an achievement upon itself. In this age, when I thought everything has been done musically, a CD like this comes along and just takes you for a trip. It's not traditional, you don't know what to expect, and that's the way music is supposed to be. Bands don't create music that breathes new life into you often enough nowadays. The Dresden Dolls do just that, breathe new life into you musically. Through and through, this is one of the most solid CDs I've heard recently. Every song is completely different from the last, and the creativity is outright.
My Favorite songs are Good Day, Half Jack, Gravity, The Perfect Fit, and Slide. The Dresden Dolls have proven to be in a league by themselves. No one puts out this kind of music nowadays and it's unlikely that anyone will. Basically, as far as debuts go (I think this is a debut at least), it's near perfection. I love every second and enjoy myself thoroughly everytime I hear it. So if you haven't heard The Dresden Dolls yet, the band and the album, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Customer Reviews:
Strong.......2007-06-23
As a guy who grew up on a steady diet of Dokken, Ratt, etc. My eyes were opened up when I purchased Stone Sour's new offering. I had heard 'Sillyworld' on KBPI several weeks ago and at that point I thought I was listening to a "poor man's" Pink Floyd cover band-I wrote Stone Sour off. Then, a few days ago, I heard 'Made of Scars' and I was hooked! I love this cd. A great blend of heavy, aggressive fist pumping tunes (30/30-150, Come What(ever) May, Hell & Consequences) with some very poignent songs like Zzyzx, Through Glass, and yes-Silly World. I will never relinquish my 80's hair band roots but bands like Stone Sour, Godsmack, KoRn, Puddle of Mudd, and others are definitely opening up my eyes to fresh, great new music.
Corey Who?.......2007-05-20
I don't care who he is. He has talent, and lots of it. I thought "Through The Glass" was my first contact with this band, but I quickly found out that I was wrong. This CD was so good, and piqued my curiosity about this Taylor guy so much, that I have spent roughly $100 on the various "Corey Taylor Projects". I have yet to be disappointed.
Another solid disc from Corey Taylor and company.......2007-04-13
I believe their debut to be superior to this cd, which is much more accessible to the general public, but it still has it's share of heavy moments. "Through Glass" is a catchy cross-over hit, "30/30-150" is a heavy metal song similar to Slipknot, and all of the songs on here have something to offer. Missing is the raw energy of their debut. This one is much more calculated and simplified. "Sillyworld", their current single, may be the worst song they have written. I just don't get how they can make that a single. If you are a fan of hard rock with a heavier metal side, you'll like this cd. Corey is one of the most recognizable vocalists in heavy music, and I think what he lacks in range, he makes up for by creating very catchy hooks.
A Very Solid Follow-Up!!!.......2007-04-10
As good as 2002's Self-Titled debut was, It always sounded to me, a little too much like Slipknot....Especially Track 1. However that is not the case with 2006's "Come What(ever) May", this album shows Corey Taylor and the gang coming into their own. The only real similarity here is Taylor's voice, the rest is purely Stone Sour. This is very well one of the best new metal releases in quite awhile, there isn't a single bad song on it. The album starts with a bang (30/30-150) and ends in a classic rock ballad (Zzyzx Rd.) a song that has an almost Bob Seger sound at times...Yes, you read that corectly. It shows that these guys are finally stepping out the shadows of Slipknot and into their own.
The Future of Rock`n`Roll.......2007-03-25
With the release of 'Come What(ever) May' & a ton of sold out shows World-Wide including the infamous Family Values Tour with other Hard Rock greats Deftones & KoRn, It's not ranting to say Stone Sour is more than just a side project now. In fact several Slipknot fans are worried that the recent popularity may be the sign of Corey Taylor leaving the band to stay on as frontman of Stone Sour full-time, Doubtful but a def. possibility now.
My favorite tracks include the first single '30/30-150', The catchy and head bang worthy 'Your God' & of course the World-Wide hit 'Through Glass' featuring deep meaningful lyrics that anyone can find easy to sing-a-long with and relate to. But of all the album one song sticks out most at least in my case the ballad 'Zzyzx Rd.' the vocals by Corey are mezmerizing and the song structure is beyond the rest of this album with an almost 'Oldies' feel. I applaud them for being brave enough to write such meaningful songs and move aside from there Metal roots a bit.
Stone Sour has set the example of what it means to be a Rock`n`Roll group in todays age and has been opening doors between Rock & Metal since the release of there debut album. In my humble opinion Stone Sour are easily one of (if not the) best Hard Rock groups in the scene today. Thank You.
